In the present research, we examined the influence of prime-target stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) on Stroop-priming effects from masked words. Participants indicated the color of a central target, which was preceded by a 33-msec prime word followed either immediately or after a variable delay by a pattern mask. The prime word was incongruent or congruent with the target color on 75% and 25% of the trials, respectively. The words followed by an immediate mask produced reliable Stroop interference at SOAs of 300 and 400 msec but not at SOAs of 500 and 700 msec. The words followed by a delayed mask produced a reversed (i.e., facilitatory) Stroop effect, which reached significance at an SOA of 400 msec or longer, but never at the shorter 300-msec SOA. Such an differential time course of both types of Stroop priming effects provides further evidence for the existence of qualitative differences between conscious and nonconscious perceptual processes.
Arterial spin labelling allows simultaneous measurement of both the blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) and the cerebral blood flow (CBF) response to changes in neural activity. The addition of a hypercapnia or hyperoxia calibration allows additional quantification of changes in the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO(2)). In this study we test the reproducibility of measurements derived using the hyperoxia approach, during a cognitive Stroop task. A QUIPSSII sequence is used at 3 T to collect simultaneous CBF and BOLD signal during two 3 min periods of hyperoxia and an 8 min Stroop task. Hyperoxia was administered via an open system and end-tidal values were sampled via a nasal cannula; average end-tidal values of 60% were reached. This procedure is repeated to allow the reproducibility of the estimated parameters to be tested. In an online experiment we examined the role of self-control in recognizing social cues in the context of disinhibited online behavior (e.g., flaming and trolling). We temporarily lowered participants self-control capacity with an ego depletion paradigm (i.e., color Stroop task). Next, we measured participants sensitivity to social cues with an emotional Stroop task containing neutral, negative, and taboo words. Sensitivity to social cues is represented by the increase in reaction time to negative and especially taboo words compared to neutral words. As expected, undepleted participants were slower to process the color of negative and taboo words. By contrast, depleted participants (i.e., those with lowered self-control capacity) did not react differently to taboo or negative words than they did to neutral words. The experiment illustrates that self-control failure may manifest itself in a failure to recognize social cues. The finding underlines the importance of self-control in understanding

Biased processing of ED-relevant stimuli (eg Fairburn, Shafran, & Cooper, 1999) and 5-HT function (Kaye, Fudge, & Paulus, 2009) are implicated in vulnerability to and the maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), but it is not known if these findings are connected: Could manipulating 5-HT function affect the processing of ED-relevant stimuli? To address this question we assessed emotional processing in female dieters (T+n=12, T-n=14) following acute low dose tryptophan depletion. ATD increased interference in the masked condition of the emotional Stroop to all negative emotional stimuli, in the absence of any other differences in emotional processing. These results suggest that ATD affects the processing of some negative (including ED-relevant) stimuli, and that reduced 5-HT function may be involved in some aspects of psychological vulnerability to EDs.
This study assessed whether two well known effects associated with cognitive control, conflict adaptation (the Gratton effect) and conflict context (proportion congruent effects), reflect a single common or separate control systems. To test this we examined if these two effects generalized from one kind of conflict to another by using a combined-conflict paradigm (involving the Simon and Spatial Stroop tasks) and manipulating the proportion of congruent to incongruent trials for one conflict (Simon) but not the other (Spatial Stroop). We found that conflict adaptation effects did not generalize, but the effect of conflict context did. This contrasting pattern of results strongly suggests the existence of two separate attentional control systems, one transient and responsible of online regulation of performance (conflict adaptation), the other sustained and responsible for conflict context effects.
Inhibitory control may play an important part in prosocial behavior, such as donating behavior. However, it is not clear at what developmental stage inhibitory control becomes associated with donating behavior and which aspects of inhibitory control are related to donating behavior during development in early to middle childhood. The present study aimed to clarify these issues with two experiments. In Experiment 1, 103 3- to 5-year-old preschoolers completed cool (Stroop-like) and hot (delay of gratification) inhibitory control tasks and a donating task. The results indicated that there were no relationships between cool or hot inhibitory control and donating behavior in the whole group and each age group of the preschoolers. In Experiment 2, 140 elementary school children in Grades 2, 4, and 6 completed cool (Stroop-like) and hot (delay of gratification) inhibitory control tasks and a donating task. Bipolar disorder is regarded as a disorder of mood and initial studies have focused on structural abnormalities in limbic networks, known to subserve mood. More recently, functional imaging studies allude to affect processing deficits, which may involve frontostriatal networks. This study sought to explore disturbances in networks involved in the processing of negative affect in euthymic bipolar patients. We used simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging and galvanic skin responsivity to explore disturbances in these networks. When processing negative affect, controls recruited a distributed subcortical-prefrontal network. In contrast, patients could only activate a subcortical network that included the amygdala and hippocampus. Despite our ability to perceptually discriminate millions of different color shades, most languages categorize color into a number of discrete color categories. While the meanings of color words are constrained by perception, perception does not fully define them. Once color words are acquired, they may in turn influence our memory and processing speed for color, although it is unlikely that language influences the lowest levels of color perception.One approach to examining the relationship between perception and language in forming our experience of color is to study children as they acquire color language. To support agile methodologies, an approach is desirable that allows developers to work as independently as possible and yet be aware of each others activities. Optimistic concurrency control provides good support for independent working but is less supportive of communication. This paper looks at the relationship between the optimistic approach and the needs of the agile philosophy. In particular, it examines support facilities provided by the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) and identifies possible improvements in conflict detection to aid communication. The overall goal of this project is to evaluate the role of molecular interactions between 5-HT2AR and 5-HT2CR in behavioral phenotypes that confer risk for cocaine dependence and relapse. Specifically, this project will evaluate the role of the 5-HT2CR:5-HT2AR balance in impulsive action and cue reactivity in cocaine-dependent subjects as compared to non-drug using controls. Brain and behavioral responses to the 5-HT2AR blocking medication mirtazapine will be compared between subjects who have high and low functioning of the 5-HT2CR based on presence of a specific, functionally-relevant single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the 5-HT2CR (Cys23Ser). Healthcare work is, to a considerable extent, cognitive. Subsequently, the analysis and the design of supporting technology must be sensitive to the cognitive and adaptive demands of the work and to the cognitive strategies employed by healthcare practitioners. Despite the vital role that cognition plays in healthcare work, current technocentric design approaches for healthcare technology do not account for it, failing to observe it during analysis and failing to develop support for it during design. By review and analysis of case studies, we show that healthcare systems developed without input from cognitive analysis and cognitive design fail to take account of important healthcare work processes and workflows. In contrast, systems developed with a cognitively-focused design strategy demonstrate how it is possible to introduce technology that supports and enhances the work strategies of those engaged in patient care. Objective-To determine whether activation of hemostatic function (thrombosis and fibrinolysis) is associated with cognitive decline in older people. Methods and Results-We studied 5804 people (age, 70-82 years) in the Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER). Mean follow-up was 3.2 years, including annual measurement of speed of information processing (letter, digit coding, and Stroop), verbal memory (picture-word naming), and basic and instrumental activities of daily living.
