Tepco says a groundwater sample taken from a well at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant last July contained a record high 5 million becquerels per liter of radioactive strontium-90. Tokyo Electric Power Co. initially said it had detected 900,000 becquerels per liter of beta ray-emitting radioactive substances, such as strontium, in the sample taken July 5 but then found problems in the measuring equipment in October. Strontium-90 usually accounts for about a half of all beta particle-emitting substances in contaminated water at the disaster-stricken power station. The total amount of beta particle-emitting materials in the samples are likely to be around 10 million becquerels, far higher than the previous high of 3.1 million becquerels for that well, a Tepco official said Thursday. Global sea levels are expected to rise as a result of climate change, which will lead to the inundation and erosion of low lying coastal areas and accelerate the intrusion of seawater into sub-surface sediments. Many of the UKs legacy nuclear facilities are located in close proximity to the shore, raising questions regarding the potential mobilisation of radionuclides during sea level rise. Strontium gets its name from Strontian, which is a town in Scotland where this alkaline earth metal was first discovered. Strontium carbonate behaves very like calcium in a glaze, and can replace it in glaze recipes and is superior to it in some ways, however it costs a lot more, so it is not commonly used. One property that it does have that makes it useful on "special occasions" is that it does assist in producing some lovely alkaline blues from glazes that have copper in them. An electron microscopic study was performed on a conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma in an 82-year-old man. Biopsies were taken before and during beta-irradiation and the morphologic features of nonirradiated tumor cells were compared to those after application of 10,000 rad. There occur striking changes in the nucleus and the cytoplasm after irradiation. The nuclei show hypertrophic and electron-dense nucleoli as well as altered chromatin structures. The cytoplasm of many cells appears destroyed and contains numerous vacuole-like structures, as well as swollen mitochondria. It is of interest that numerous normal lymphoid cells were present within the irradiated tumor.
