Gabriel Andreuccetti, a Ph.D. candidate in epidemiology at the University of São Paolo Medical School, Brazil, has received the 2011 International Society of Addiction Journal Editors (ISAJE)/World Health Organization Young Scholars Award.. He received the award for his paper, Reducing the Legal Blood Alcohol Concentration Limit for Driving in Developing Countries: A Time for Change? Results and Implications Derived From a Time-Series Analysis (2001-10) conducted in Brazil, published in the December 2011 issue of Addiction. In Brazil, a new law introduced in 2008 lowered the blood alcohol concentration limit for drivers from 0.06 to 0.02. Mr. Andreuccetti sought to determine whether the new limit had an impact on the prevalence of traffic accidents. Using autoregressive integrated moving averages, he analyzed nonfatal and fatal road accidents from January 2001 through June 2010. Based on his findings, the region had significant reductions in traffic injury and fatality rates after the new law ...

On the first of a two-day strike, the doctors are this time stopping even emergency cases, a controversial action to highlight the 7-day working week that the workers say is unsafe for patient safety.

Denis OHearn, author of the biography on Bobby Sands, Nothing But An Unfinished song, is Professor of Sociology at Binghamton University, USA, and has recently been involved in campaigning for the rights of death sentenced prisoners in US Supermax Prisons. Here, he tells the story of the prisoners fight and their use of hunger strike:. [Above: Siddique Abdullah Hasan; Bomani Shakur; Jason Robb]. INSIDE A HUNGER STRIKE. For anyone with a passing knowledge of the events in Ireland thirty years ago, the story of a recent hunger strike in Ohio will be interesting, if not downright encouraging. The history of the strike, its reasons, its beginning, and end, are told in two articles I wrote (below) that were published in the US. The first is an OpEd in the Youngstown Vindicator, the hometown paper where Ohio State Penitentiary (OSP) is located, that appeared on the day the hunger strike began and was widely reprinted in Znet and other places. The second article announces the end and victory of the ...

Figure 3. Fleece rot is the major predisposing cause of body strike in sheep. The dermatitic exudate is seen as the brownish, cakey material in the fleece. The green colouration is produced by the opportunist pathogen, Pseudomonas areuginosa.. Why is body strike, and not breech strike, the main type of fly strike ? Because most Merino sheep in Australia have been mulesed since the 1960s, breech strike is seen infrequently. Mulesing removes breech skin wrinkles (with shears) so that the skin, once healed, is difficult to wet and dries quickly. Probably the only time breech strike becomes a problem in mulesed sheep is when sheep scour and faecal soiling occurs.. If mulesing stops, breech strike will automatically become the No. 1 problem. But only if the sheep are wrinkly. If the sheep are plain bodied, nothing happens, no fly strike of any kind.. Body strike outbreaks are confined to very wet periods during the warm months of the year. However, the incidence of body strike in young Merino sheep ...

Comrade Mihalis Nikolopoulos from weighing 78.5 kg, has now reached 66.5, while showing significant bradycardia with a pulse in the range of 40-44 per minute and low blood pressure (8/6 small).. Olga Eκonomidou is on the 28th day of hunger strike and has reached a critical level of body weight (42 kg), the blood pressure is very low (7/5) and blood sugar ranges with measurements starting at 70 and goes up to 52 which is a borderline for hypoglycemic shock.. Nevertheless, justice continues to play with the lives of the hunger strikers, delaying the councils decision to release the relatives of members of the CCF in a bureaucratic way, leading them to the boundaries between life and death.. Banking operations are likely to be impacted next week when the bank employee unions go on strike on 22 October. The strike has been called for by the All India Bank Employees Association (AlBEA) and the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), backed by the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC). The protesting unions wish to draw attention to several matters, one of which is the issue of merging 10 public-sector banks into four. The unions are also raising their voice against the closure of six nationalised banks, terming this decision of the government to be rather unfortunate and unnecessary.. Bank of Baroda has already issued a statement assuring that while its operations may be affected on the day of the strike, it will definitely take all necessary steps to ensure smooth functioning on 22 October. The impact will be more on the PSU banks.. The striking unions are protesting against the merger of banks. In September too, the members of the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), ...
The right to strike is recognised as a fundamental human right by the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the European Union.1 Most European countries enshrine the right to strike in their national constitutions.2 It has been argued that collective bargaining amounts to nothing more than collective begging for employees without the option to strike.3 This is because employees have no choice but to accept the final terms imposed by their employer. It has even been claimed that an individuals right to withdraw his or her labour is a feature that distinguishes employment from slavery.4. Industrial action by doctors is, however, complicated by their professional values and ethical framework. Most strikes are effective because they harm a neutral third party, who is then motivated to pressure the employer to accede to strike demands. Unfortunately, when doctors strike, this third party is often their patients.5 For many people, such behaviour is inconsistent with the over-riding duty of ...
On July 2, at approximately 10:55 p.m., our beloved brother Kambui Nantambu Robinson - a type one diabetic whose commitment, resolve and strength are an inspiration to us all - went into severe diabetic shock, that is, hypoglycemia or acute low blood sugar. Our efforts to enable him to overcome the subsequent ketoacidosis, which accompanied the attack, failed.. We called man down and ultimately got the towers attention. We are only three cells from one another, so I was able to observe the medical response directly, which was panicky, bumbling and slow - far too slow. This was apparent to me from my experience as a U.S. Naval Hospital corpsman, where I operated under the Spec-war PAC-Fleet Command.. The comrade did suffer a mild seizure, loss of consciousness and stopped breathing for a brief period. The nurse administered what I believe was glycogen and epinephrine. After our prompts to staff, he was finally secured to the gurney and transported via ambulance to the hospital, where he was ...

The asymmetry of information brings difficulty for government to manage public hospitals. Therefore, Jiading District of Shanghai has been establishing DRGs-based inpatient service management system (ISMS) to effectively compare the output of different hospitals through DRGs, reward desired hospital performance and enhance inpatient service capacity. However, the impact of the implementation of DRGs-based inpatient service management (ISM) policy in Jiading district is still unknow. We therefore conducted this study to evaluate the impact of DRGs-based ISM policy on the performance of inpatient service since its implementation in Jiading District, Shanghai, China in 2017. Using an interrupted time series design, we analyzed quarterly data of seven DRGs-based performance measures from the ISMS which covered all five public hospitals in Jiading District from 2013 to 2019. We utilized the segmented linear regression model to assess the change of level and trend of performance indicators before and after
Background - The management of complex, multi-morbid patients is challenging for solo primary care providers (PCPs) with limited access to resources. The primary objective of the intervention was to reduce the overall rate of Emergency Department (ED) visits among patients in participating practices.. Methods and Findings - An interrupted time series design and qualitative interviews were used to evaluate a multifaceted intervention, SCOPE (Seamless Care Optimizing the Patient Experience), offered to solo PCPs whose patients were frequent users of the ED. The intervention featured a navigation hub (nurse, homecare coordinator) to link PCPs with hospital and community resources, a general internist on-call to provide phone advice or urgent assessments, and access to patient results on-line. Continuous quality improvement (QI) strategies were employed to optimize each component of the intervention. The primary outcome was the relative pre-post intervention change in ED visit rate for patients of ...
Like the Arab Spring, the U.S. education Spring, was an explosive wave of protests. State-wide teacher walkouts seemed to arise out of nowhere, organized in Facebook groups, with demands for increased school funding and political voice for teachers. Though the walkouts confounded national media outlets, which had little idea how to explain or report on the movements, for parent and teacher activists who have been organizing against reforms in public education in the past four decades, the protests were both unexpected and understandable. What was surprising was their breadth of support (state-wide), their organizing strategy (Facebook), and their breathtakingly rapid spread. For most of the far-Right, the West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arizona, and North Carolina walkouts showed greedy public employees exploiting their job security to get pay and benefits better than hard-working taxpayers have. However, teachers won wide popular support, even from Republicans, forcing the media-savvier ...
British Airways (BA) cabin crew have voted to strike in a bitter row over jobs and working conditions, it was announced this afternoon.. The Unite union will hold a meeting on Thursday when strike dates will be announced, although it has ruled out taking action over Easter. It must give at least seven days notice, though passengers will be hoping for an agreement between the airline and the union to save their travel plans from ruin. The news comes after a failed strike attempt, thwarted by the courts, last December (see the BA Christmas strike off MSE News story).. As we dont yet know strike dates, though they are likely to be in March, it is still unclear which BA passengers will be affected.. But if youre worried, below is a Q&A guide on the strikes.. Will all flights be cancelled on the strike days?. BA has been training other staff, including pilots, to take the place of cabin crew. In addition, not all workers are likely to strike, meaning some flights may still go ahead as ...
JERUSALEM (May. 16). The prisoners, who had refused to eat until freed, called off their hunger strike today on the advice of Arab leaders in Acre. Ten of the prisoners were severely ill from their prolonged fast.. Moslem delegations from Haifa, Ramleh and Acre called on Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, British High Commissioner for Palestine, to plead for liberation of the prisoners.. It is a state where you are mentally low and have no enthusiasm or vigor left to do things. It basically refers to a low mood and aversion to any kind of activity. Depression symptoms include bouts of feeling low, frustration and low self-esteem. Depression is mysteriously painful, making you more and more disconnected with yourself and those around you, and allowing you to become apathetic and brood darkly over matters you could really feel positive about. This acute sadness can make you feel lost and anxious. It results from the psychological changes you go through or hormonal changes taking place in your body. Teenage depression, for example - teenage being a phase of life characterized by a lot of physical and psychological changes, its during the teenage years that life seems to be taking an all new shape and it gets difficult at times to cope up with these changes within and around you. A small crowd formed on the corner of South Broad Street and Washington Avenue as people waited for the promised Temple shuttle to pick them up. One dark gray car drove past with signs on his windows saying Need a ride? and people on bikes shouted to the crowd that SEPTA was on strike just in case the motley crew of students and employees had not heard the news.. When SEPTA declared its intention to strike late last night, many people were shocked. Some did not even hear of the strike till they saw the subway entrances blocked off with black metal bars. The Norwegian Nurses Associations (NSF) and NHO Abelia agree on a new collective agreement. The government in Sri Lanka provides a free health service in the form of Western medicine, practised in hospitals all over the country, and Ayurvedic medicine (an indigenous, ancient healing philosophy) practised in one hospital in Colombo. The health service (Western medicine) can be divided into preventative and curative sectors.. Preventative medicine is concerned with the control of communicable diseases (especially rabies, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, and leprosy), sanitation, family health, and health education.1 Preventative health care is delivered by medical officers of health and other public health workers in the community. The preventative sector is considered to be Sri Lankas best health care achievement. In particular, mother and baby clinics have had a great impact on maternal and infant mortality rates; the maternal mortality rate is currently 2.4/10 000 births, which compares favourably with other South East Asian countries.1Similarly, there is also a high ...
Surveillance data are essential for malaria control, but quality is often poor. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the novel combination of training plus an innovative quality improvement method-collaborative improvement (CI)-on the quality of malaria surveillance data in Uganda. The intervention (training plus CI, or TCI), including brief in-service training and CI, was delivered in 5 health facilities (HFs) in Kayunga District from November 2015 to August 2016. HF teams monitored data quality, conducted plan-do-study-act cycles to test changes, attended periodic learning sessions, and received CI coaching. An independent evaluation was conducted to assess data completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. Using an interrupted time series design without a separate control group, data were abstracted from 156,707 outpatient department (OPD) records, laboratory registers, and aggregated monthly reports (MR) for 4 time periods: baseline-12 months, TCI scale-up-5 months; CI implementation

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the magnitude and fatality of meningitis bacterial disease in Africa following the introduction of MACV from 2010 and 2017. An interrupted time series design and nonprobability sampling were used. Secondary data issued of meningitis enhanced surveillance were retrieved from World Health Organization database. The binomial negative regression and Pearsons Chi-Square tests were used. The study found that after the MACV introduction there was a 39% decline of incidence rate of meningitis suspected cases (IRR 0.61, 95% CI 0.48 - 0.79, |i|p|/i| | .001) and 99% decline of the risk of |i

The present study aimed to clarify the effect of the foot strike pattern on muscle-tendon behavior and kinetics of the gastrocnemius medialis during treadmill running. Seven male participants ran with 2 different foot strike patterns (forefoot strike [FFS] and rearfoot strike [RFS]), with a step frequency of 2.50 Hz and at a speed of 2.38 m/s for 45 seconds on a treadmill with an instrumented force platform. The fascicle behavior of gastrocnemius medialis was captured using a B-mode ultrasound system with a sampling rate of 75 Hz, and the mechanical work done and power exerted by the fascicle and tendon were calculated. At the initial contact, the fascicle length was significantly shorter in the FFS than in the RFS (P = .001). However, the fascicular velocity did not differ between strike patterns. Higher tendon stretch and recoil were observed in the FFS (P , .001 and P = .017, respectively) compared with the RFS. The fascicle in the positive phase performed the same mechanical work in both the ...
A two-year post-doctoral position in Cultural Evolution and Social Cognition is currently open at the Département dEtudes Cognitives (DEC) of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. This project will be conducted in collaboration with Nicolas Baumard at the Institut Jean Nicod (IJN) and Julie Grèzes at the Laboratoire de Neurosciences Cognitives (LNC). Project summary:. The project aims to document the so-called process of civilization, the set of long-term psychological changes that occurred in Europe from 1300 to 1900. Using large database and online experiments, the project will study the evolution of emotional displays in European paintings from the late Middle Ages to modern times and will test whether economic development can account for the evolution of social features such as trustworthiness, agreeableness or dominance. More generally, the goal of the project is to test whether life history parameters (mortality, affluence, external threat) can account for psychological changes in ...

Former Ghurka servicemen have ended a 13-day hunger strike after the Government agreed to enter talks with the Nepalese Embassy over equal pensions for veterans. The hunger strikers were part of a group of protesters calling for equal pensions for Gurkhas who retired before 1997 and are not eligible for a full UK armed forces pension. A spokesman for the group told the PA news agency on Thursday Dhan Gurung, from Basingstoke, had less than a week before his condition became really serious.

It has come to the attention of the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) that on Friday, May 3 from 9:20 to 9:50 a.m. there is a planned walkout of students. This student-led, provincial initiative, is concerned that the LGBTQ+ community may potentially lose their protection when it comes to GSAs under the new government. It has been promoted on Instagram and has received some media attention.. The CBE recognizes the importance of public schools in creating a stronger democracy and the right of students to advocate for important causes. While we support student voice and engagement, parents/guardians should be aware that this student walkout is not a CBE-sanctioned event. We will not encourage participation, nor will we prevent students from walking out or re-entering the school at the end of the protest. Students who choose to participate will be marked as an unexcused absence. As a safety precaution, we will suggest that students who chose to participate stay on school property. If a student is ...
The study was an initial exploration into the topic and comprised three focus group discussions with targeted consumer groups, in-depth interviews with three health committees, volunteer groups which operate between the patient and the provider at local clinics, and two journalists who actively follow and report on the public healthcare sector.. Focus groups were used to help identify top of mind perceptions of public healthcare facilities and services, as well as deeper, more thoughtful, associations with the sector, Focus group participants included members of the public that receive regular chronic care at public facilities and who could comment on the services received at primary healthcare clinics. Another group comprised of individuals who had received emergency care at a public hospital in the previous 12 months, with the third group comprising of individuals who were, at the time, not utilising public healthcare facilities, but whose income put them on the cusp of public and private ...
Gerry Kelly, the former IRA hunger striker, escapee and currently the Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast, was arrested in England in March 1973 and sentenced to two life sentences and twenty years. He and three of his comrades went on hunger strike seeking repatriation to a prison in the North, closer to home, but were brutally force-fed. Kelly recalls: They started force-feeding me around the 19th day and I was force-fed 167 times over 200 days. Youd frequently vomit and that too would be forced back down your throat. A few weeks ago he wrote a poem about his hunger strike and two IRA comrades who had been imprisoned earlier, who also went on hunger strike, and were to die at the hands of the British government.. Mr. Tomlinson has given, as I expected, a vigorous rebuttal to my response to his Nassau Institute presentation. I should make clear at the outset that I have never been associated with a typical commercial bank, so I cannot be charged with any long-time professional loyalty to entrenched banking practices. I am something of a gad-fly, all in favor of new approaches, but they must be realistic.. I agree with many of his points. Germany has shown it is not impervious to debt malaise. Its quite true that banks in Canada, Australia and Brazil (and The Bahamas, for that matter) have not suffered the catastrophic losses and required the bail-outs of US or European banks.. But why? Not because they adopted the extreme re-structuring solution proposed by Mr. Tomlinson. I believe those strong banks still hold plenty of loans. The difference is that they are generally good loans, made with traditional l bankers prudence and subject to effective regulation. But in the US, and to a certain extent in ...
By Marta Nogueira and Brad Brooks. RIO DE JANEIRO/SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian oil workers began a 72-hour strike on Wednesday in a new blow to President Michel Temer following a nationwide trucker protest that has strangled Latin Americas largest economy for over a week. The strike affecting several rigs, refineries, plants and ports is the latest challenge for state-led oil firm Petroleo Brasileiro SA, whose shares have tumbled nearly 30 percent in two weeks over fears that political interference would unwind more investor-focused policies. Late on Tuesday, Reuters reported that Temer was considering an overhaul of a market-based fuel pricing policy at Petrobras, which could provoke even more investor flight. Temers office said in a Wednesday morning statement that he would preserve the policy. The oil sector strike included workers on at least 20 oil rigs in the lucrative Campos basin of 46 operated by Petrobras, as the company is known, according to FUP, Brazils largest oil workers ...
Trump had initially said he was told that no troops had been injured in the Jan. 8 missile strike on Iraqs Ain al-Asad air base, which Iran carried out as retaliation for a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad that killed Irans most powerful general, Qassem Soleimani, on Jan. 3. The military said symptoms of concussion or traumatic brain injury were not immediately reported after the strike and in some cases became known days later. Many were in bunkers before nearly a dozen Iranian ballistic missiles exploded.. After the Pentagon reported Jan. 17 that 11 service members had been evacuated from Iraq with concussionlike symptoms, Trump said, I heard they had headaches and a couple of other things … and I can report it is not very serious. He said he did not consider the injuries to be as severe as those suffered by troops who were hit by roadside bombs in Iraq.. Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, became a bigger concern for the military in recent years as medical science improved its understanding of ...

A Michigan woman who has not eaten for over two weeks in protest of the federal governments refusal to answer specific questions about the legality of the income tax met with her congressman yesterday, demanding that he provide her an adequate response on the issue.. Rose Lear of Muskegon, Mich., met with Republican Rep. Pete Hoekstra in his Capitol Hill office. She has vowed she will die of starvation unless the government addresses the two main contentions of the tax honesty movement - that the 16th Amendment authorizing the income tax was improperly ratified and that most Americans are not required to pay federal income tax, making it an illegal and unconstitutional system.. The 52-year-old began her hunger strike on Ash Wednesday, March 5, and already has shed five pounds from her 100-pound frame.. As WorldNetDaily reported, Lears action is reminiscent of the hunger strike by Bob Schulz of We the People. Schulz ended a 20-day hunger strike in 2001 after IRS and Justice Department ...

The aircraft approached Marseille during the early hours of 26 December. The hijackers did not know that Major Denis Faviers GIGN squad was already in Marseille,[3] having flown from Majorca to a military base near Marseille, and planned to storm the aircraft while it was in Marseille. The GIGN squad practised entering the A300 before Flight 8969 arrived in Marseille.[1] Favier explained in an interview that the enemy was arriving in friendly territory, and the power difference would be a key element in the struggle.[3] The Flight 8969 aircraft landed at 3:33 am.[1]. Steward Claude Burgniard said that the hijackers felt that the landing in Marseille was a magic moment as they had arrived in France. Burgniard recalled that the airport was dark and that she only saw the lights of the A300 and a car that the A300 followed. The French authorities deliberately led the aircraft away from the terminal and into a remote corner of the airport. By 26 December, the French government had received ...
Source: World Wildlife Fund. Marseille, France - As the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in Marseille draws to a close, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) applauds the positive vote for Motion 040 which calls on all IUCN members including governments and NGOs to develop, adopt and implement a new action plan for nature - a Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - which should focus on, as its overarching goal, reversing biodiversity loss to achieve a nature-positive world by 2030. The Old Major (Old Cathedral - registered as a National Heritage building in 1840). The present church dates back to the middle of the 12th Century but a succession of earlier buildings had been built on the site since the 6th Century. It is a fine example of Provençal Romanesque architecture built of pinkish stone from the Couronne quarries. The bell tower was not built until the 16th Century. It was a cathedral until 1852, but continued to be used as a parish church until the 1950s. When the new cathedral was built, the vieille Major was deprived of two of its bays. During the construction work, however, the ancient Early Christian baptistery was revealed in the centre of the building with its square exterior and octagonal interior of huge dimensions (over 25 metres wide), all of which was very finely decorated. It was reburied and the New Major was built over it. The New Major (New Cathedral) (registered as a National Heritage building in 1906). In the 19th Century, Marseille witnessed major social

WASHINGTON (JTA) - An Israeli strike on Iran is likely if sanctions fail, a senior official from a European country said.. On a visit to Washington to wrap up a fact-finding mission, the official said Wednesday at an off-the-record breakfast with journalists that an Israeli strike was in the air. The official, who declined to be identified, spoke at a European countrys embassy in Washington after meeting with senior Iran policy officials in Middle Eastern and Western capitals, including Washington, to discuss Irans suspected nuclear weapons program, among other issues.. However, the official conveyed an impression that Iran was likely to buckle under enhanced sanctions. The Europeans and possibly Russia might favor stricter measures that would target Irans banking sector and the export of refined petroleum to Iran.. The official also said that a face-saving offer that Iran might accept would be to allow the Islamic Republic to maintain its current levels of uranium enrichment as long as an ...

It is without doubt that the state in Botswana seeks to see the withering away of the right to strike. The industrial relations posture of the state enshrined in the labour laws of Botswana and state-unions relations policy since independence as well as the latest developments are instructive. The state has an inextricable alliance with domestic and international bourgeoisie and unwaveringly protects the interests of capital. Labour organisations have been firmly proscribed in the public service for a long time through draconian legislation to create a more favorable environment for private businesses. It was only in 2008 that unionism was permitted in the public service. The right to strike was impossible to enjoy for purpose of collective bargaining with the employer; the law almost outlawed the right to strike for workers in both the public and private sector. Union offi cials could not, in terms of the law at the time, be fulltime at unions offices and this made trade unionism part-time. ...
