Experiments with selective agonists and antagonists of purinoceptors allowed us to evaluate the subtype of P2X receptors. We showed that the myocardium of 14-100-day-old rats contains functionally active P2X1 receptors. These receptors are involved in the realization of the positive inotropic effect of the atria and ventricles. Selective P2X1 receptor agonist β,γ-methylene-ATP induced a dose-dependent increase in the strength of atrial and ventricular contractions. P2X1 receptor antagonist TNP-ATP abolished the effect of the agonist in rats of all age groups.

Nitroglycerin was shown to induce significant positive inotropic effect in adequate oxygen supply in isolated papillary muscles of the rat heart left ventricle. The effect depended upon inotropic reserve of the myocardium. The decrease in oxygen supply of papillary muscles inhibited their contractile activity. In these conditions, nitroglycerin exerted no positive inotropic influence on papillary muscles. Positive inotropic action of nitroglycerin became weaker after preliminary perfusion of papillary muscles with propranolol. Calcium antagonist verapamil completely abolished the positive inotropic action of nitroglycerin. The data suggest that positive inotropic action of nitroglycerin depends upon transsarcolemmal influx of calcium ions and is partially associated with the stimulation of myocardiac beta-receptors.

Summary Measurement of rheotactic responses of Australorbis glabratus indicated that stream velocities above 35 cm/sec prevent any degree of upstream progression, but that below this flow rate snails show increasing ability for positive rheotactic orientation movement. When chemical attractants were applied, A. glabratus increased its rate of upstream migration. Persistence of increased progression rates after the cessation of chemical stimulation suggests a behavioral pattern similar to that known to exist in insects subjected to pheromonal stimulation.

Also included is a therapy module coupled to the controller, the therapy module communicating a plurality of anodic pulses to the heart through the lead when providing the temporary stimulation therapy. The amplitude, frequency, and duration of the anodic pulses may be varied, and biphasic pacing may also be used. The electrode may be a drug-eluting electrode for delivery of a drug. After an event occurs, the controller module may transition to the chronic stimulation therapy that may include cathodic stimulation.
