Hello, We hope this reaches everyone safe and doing as well as possible under the circumstances. While most news around California prison issues is rightly focused on the Covid-19 outbreak, one piece of positive news is the continued movement of AB 3052 - Compensation for Survivors of Forced or Involuntary Sterilization Act - through the California Assembly. This bill would establish the Forced or Involuntary Sterilization Compensation Program for the purpose of providing victim compensation to survivors of state-sponsored sterilization conducted pursuant to eugenics laws that existed in California between 1909 and 1979 and to survivors of coerced sterilizations of people in prisons. Sterilization has long been used in the US as a genocidal tactic against third world women, their families and communities. In 2016 we created an educational project focused on connecting forced sterilizations in Californias prisons to historical uses of the practice in Black, Native American, and Puerto Rican ...

By EJI Staff, EJI, Equal Justice Initiative. On June 14, 1973, fourteen-year-old Minnie Lee Relf and her twelve-year-old mentally disabled sister, Mary Alice, were sterilized without their knowledge or consent after nurses with the Montgomery Family Planning Clinic - a federally-funded agency - deceived their illiterate mother into believing that she was agreeing to have the girls receive birth control shots.. Two years earlier, after moving into public housing with their family, Mary Alice, Minnie Lee, and their older sister, Katie, had been administered experimental birth control injections by the local family clinic without their informed consent and initially without their parents consent. After the federal government ended the experimental birth control trials, clinic nurses decided that the girls should be sterilized. The clinic targeted the girls for the procedure because they were poor, black, and living in public housing. More cognitively advanced than her younger sisters, Katie ...

The moral standing of involuntary sterilization has long been subject to debate but has only recently been looked upon with disfavor. When sterilization of a mentally handicapped minor is entertained, issues of eugenics, medical ethics, and legal precedent specially arise. Ethics consultants and ethics committees have been asked to consider such cases. We present the case of a mentally handicapped girl whose parents requested an endometrial ablation, an accepted procedure to diminish menstrual flow and the girls attendant anxiety. The requested procedure would have the unintended effect of sterilizing her. An ethics consultant was asked to see the patient and to assist the patients parents and the requesting obstetrician with identifying and resolving the ethical issues at hand. The case reveals circumstances under which sterilization is thought by the parents to be a logical next step and desirable effect. Case analysis considers the best interests of the girl whose fate is being weighed and ...
But as I was talking to some of your leaders, you share a similar concern here in China, Biden said.. Your policy has been one which I fully understand - Im not second-guessing - of one child per family, he said. The result being that youre in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people. Not sustainable.. Human rights organizations have repeatedly reported that the one-child policy-since updated to become a two-child-per-family limit-is enforced by the Communist government through forced abortions and sterilizations of women who do not comply.. The Trump administration, beginning in 2017, stopped funding the UNs population fund (UNFPA) because of its partnership with the Chinese government. The State Department said that Chinas family planning policies still involve the use of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization.. The U.S. had also pulled funding of the UNFPA in 2002 over Chinas implementation of the one-child policy, but the Obama ...

Helen Novotney had never had a screening mammogram because she always felt healthy. That changed in late 2012, as she helped her aunt navigate her own breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. While attending her aunts doctor appointment, she was encouraged by Marjie Persons, MD - a University Hospitals breast surgeon - to have a screening mammogram. Helen was hesitant. She did her monthly self-exams with complete success. However, as Helen says, Dr. Persons was very persuasive in explaining the importance of the mammogram. Based on her family history, Dr. Persons ordered a mammogram for Helen using tomosynthesis, a screening technology that uses 3D imaging to give a much clearer view of a dense breast than a traditional digital mammogram. This technology saved Helens life. The tumor was an aggressive form found near the chest wall and was better detected using tomosynthesis technology. Once the tumor was identified by the initial screening mammogram, Helen was able to undergo additional ...

To better understand the functional dynamics within this subset, we first used a combined strategy of subcellular fractionation and proteomics to describe differences at the protein level between highly purified human CD4(+)CD25(+) and CD4(+)CD25(+) T-cell populations. This identified a set of membrane proteins highly expressed on the cell surface of human regulatory T cells Tregs), including CD71, CD95, CD147, and CD148. CD147 (Basigin or Emmprin) divided CD4(+)CD25(+) cells into distinct subsets. Furthermore, CD147, ...
By Johannes Gescher, Andreas Kappler. Microbes can respire on metals. This doubtless uncomplicated discovering is likely one of the significant discoveries that have been made within the box of microbiology within the previous few many years. the significance of this remark is obvious. Metals are hugely plentiful on our planet. Iron is even the main considerable point in the world and the forth such a lot ample point within the Earths crust. therefore, in a few environments iron, but additionally different metals or metalloids, are the dominant breathing electron acceptors. Their aid hugely drives the carbon cycle in those environments and establishes redox cycles of the steel electron acceptors themselves. those redox cycles usually are not just a motive force for different biotic reactions yet are in addition valuable for beginning a couple of geochemically appropriate abiotic redox conversions. even supposing common and ecologically influential, electron move onto metals like ferric iron or ...

St Helen Bishopsgate, the church of, is situated nearly in the middle of great St. Helens. It derives its name from its being dedicated to St. Helens, the mother of Constantine the great, and escaped the great fire in 1666. You prepared and the new tower built in 1669, and contains many curious monuments among which is that of Francis Bancroft, who founded the alms houses called after his name. The patronage of his church appears to have been very anciently in lay hands, for in the reign of Henry the second, Randolph and his son, Robert, granted it to the dean and chapter of St. Pauls, by whom it was afterwards granted to William Fitzwilliam, who, in 1212 founded the priory of St. Helen, and conferred advowson of the church on prior S. and nuns, in whom it continued till the suppression of their convent in 1539 when it devoled to the crown. In 1551, Edward VI granted it to Ridley, Bishop of London and his successors, which was confirmed by Queen Mary, in 1553; but it appears to have again ...

Viewpoint: No, the presence of the extra Y chromosome in XYY males does not in and of itself produce aggressive behavior in those affected; dealing with aspects of the condition during adolescence is a more likely explanation for any later social difficulties experienced by XYY males. The debate about the XYY karyotype can be seen as part of the old debate about nature and nurture. The belief that nature, or biological determinism and inheritance, is more important than environment and education was the basis of the field that Francis Galton (1822-1911) called eugenics. According to Galton, talent, character, intellect, disposition, and other aspects of natural ability, as well as physical features, such as height and eye color, are governed by heredity. Similarly, a tendency to vice, alcoholism, feeble-mindedness, and criminality are inherited. Although eugenics became a disreputable concept in the first half of the twentieth century because of its association with involuntary sterilization ...

People might be inclined to categorise »Wuivend Riet«, Johannes Schmoellings first solo project, as electronic music. In so far as this tag names the media employed, that is correct. Over and above this, however, such a characteristic of this musics individuality applies only out wardly, while basically concealing instead of stating something conclusive about it. In actual fact, a major impulse of this music is that it strictly rejects the conventional, which in turn also means the convenience of electronic music. That in this instance Johannes Schmoelling should even use the most advanced technology is not necessarily a contradiction by any means. It rather indicates that he derives his musical creed precisely from the inner tension relationship. »Wuivend Riet« is an attempt to surmount the mere electronic element and to arrive at a different musically inspired attitude towards electronics and their possibilities ...

We do not want a repeat of the failed 1992 Port Macquarie private hospital fiasco negotiated by the previous Liberal-National Government where the state government had to step in and buy the facility to ensure proper health care in 2005.. Under the Port Macquarie model, NSW taxpayers ended up paying for the hospital three times over. It cost $52 million to build, but ended up costing taxpayers $144 million, Mr Secord said.. The Liberals and Nationals are privatising elective day surgery at Byron Central Hospital and refusing to detail their Maitland-Lower Hunter Hospital plans.. Mike Baird is on the record saying that private sector involvement was a way to transform and improve health care and said his vision of privatisation for the ...
This paper reviews the trends in privatisation and liberalisation in the energy sector, and the development of remunicipalisation and renationalisation in Germany and elsewhere.
Is anybody happy that the Royal Mail is to be privatised? Personally, I see no cause for celebration. Polls show that 70 per cent of the public are against privatisation - no matter which political party they support - and 96 per cent of the workforce dont want it either, despite being offered shares in…

So Christopher thank you for coming. How are you doing?. Christopher Reinkemeier: Im doing fine. How about you?. Richard Jacobs: Good, good. Yeah. I found you because I saw you are part of a group that is creating a synthetic organelle that will be inside of living cells if I have it right. Can you tell me a little bit about whats recently happened?. Christopher Reinkemeier: Yes. So, we recently published synthetic organelle. So that synthetic organelle, it can do a specific translation of one mRNA to produce specifically modified protein and these specifically modified protein carriers than a non-canonical amino acid, as a specific side. So, it has already previously been established a technique of genetic code ...

Compute Less to Get More: Using ORC to Improve Sparse Filtering. Johannes Lederer, Sergio Guadarrama(Submitted on 16 Sep 2014). Sparse Filtering is a popular feature learning algorithm for image classification pipelines. In this paper, we connect the performance of Sparse Filtering in image classification pipelines to spectral properties of the corresponding feature matrices. This connection provides new insights into Sparse Filtering; in particular, it suggests stopping Sparse Filtering early. We therefore introduce the Optimal Roundness Criterion (ORC), a novel stopping criterion for Sparse Filtering. We show that this stopping criterion is related with pre-processing procedures such as Statistical Whitening and that it can make image classification with Sparse Filtering considerably faster and more accurate.. If you happened to find yourself browsing through Walmarts aisles in August of 2016, you may have come across a DVD titled In the Deep. Unless you particularly fancy Mandy Moore or Matthew Modine, theres no reason you wouldve paid the movies shark-laden cover any particular attention - not with the glut of sharknados and sharktopuses gliding through the B-movie waters. Yet one year later that very same film - rechristened with its original title 47 Meters Down - debuted in American theaters on its way to a $40-plus million box office run. How did a movie seemingly resigned to the abyss of the Walmart DVD bargain bin become one of the years biggest independently produced hits? British writer/director Johannes Roberts (Storage 24, The Other Side of the Door) tells Filmmaker the tale of the unlikely reclamation of 47Meters Down. Filmmaker: As a young horror fan growing up in the States, my education in the genre began at the video store. Did you have a similar experience as a kid in the UK?

van der Waals, Johannes Diderik yōhä´nəs dē´dərĭk vän dər väls [key], 1837-1923, Dutch physicist. It had been known for some time that the behavior of real gases differs from that of an ideal gas as predicted by thermodynamics and the kinetic-molecular theory of gases. Van der Waals was led to the hypothesis of the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states of matter by combining the kinetic theory of gases with Laplaces theory of capillarity. In his theory of corresponding states (1880) he presented an equation of state (now named for him) for homogeneous substances in terms of pressure, volume, and temperature (see gas laws); unlike the ideal gas law, his equation contains constant factors (different for each real substance) to account for the fact that molecules are of finite size and experience weak forces of mutual attraction (now called van der Waals forces). For that work and for discovering the law of binary mixtures he received the 1910 Nobel Prize in Physics. He was ...

Helen of Four Gates (1920) is a British silent film melodrama, directed by cinema pioneer Cecil Hepworth and starring Alma Taylor (in a dual role as mother and daughter), James Carew and Gerald Ames. The film was adapted from a popular novel of the same name by Ethel Carnie Holdsworth and was shot on location on the Pennine moors around Heptonstall and Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, which Carnie Holdsworth had used as the setting for her novel. The films intertitles were written in the original Yorkshire dialect of the novel. For over 80 years Helen of Four Gates was believed to be irretrievably lost, until an original 35mm print was discovered in a film vault in Canada in 2007. Helen (Taylor) marries a young man who has poisoned her mind against her other suitor Abel Mason (Carew) by convincing her that there is hereditary madness in the Mason family. Within two years Helens husband is dead and she is dying. She entrusts her baby daughter to Abel to bring up, as she has no family to call on. ...
