Tropical sprue is largely limited to within about 30 degrees north and south of the equator. Recent travel to this region is a key factor in diagnosing this disease in residents of countries outside of that geographical region.[1]. Other conditions which can resemble tropical sprue need to be differentiated.[4] Coeliac disease (also known as coeliac sprue or gluten sensitive enteropathy), has similar symptoms to tropical sprue, with the flattening of the villi and small intestine inflammation and is caused by an autoimmune disorder in genetically susceptible individuals triggered by ingested gluten. Malabsorption can also be caused by protozoan infections, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, immunodeficiency, chronic pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease.[1] Environmental enteropathy is a less severe, subclinical condition similar to tropical sprue.[1]. ...
At the present time the etiology of tropical sprue is undetermined. Manson-Bahr (1948) has indicated that tropical sprue must be infective since malnutrition is not observed in many patients. Frazer (1949) has suggested that an alteration in the small bowel bacterial flora could be a mechanism for impaired absorption by competitive demands for nutrition. Thus, bacterial growth in the small bowel, which is normally bacteria-free (Cregan and Hayward 1953) could possibly lead to impaired absorption by utilization of metabolites, production of antimetabolites and/or production of toxic effects on the mucosa. Since the area of active absorption of foodstuffs is greatest in the jejunum, the present study was undertaken to sample small bowel juice in that segment for bacterial growth. It was hoped that information could be obtained to allow a more definitive conclusion regarding the role of bacteria in the etiology of malabsorption in tropical sprue.
Intestinal absorption of glycine 20 mmol/1, glycyl-glycine 10 mmol/1 plus L-leucine 10 mmol/1, and glycyl-L-leucine 10 mmol/1 has been studied by intestinal perfusion in 11 patients with tropical sprue and 10 control subjects. The patients with sprue had a significant reduction in the rate of absorption of glycine from a 20 mmol/1 solution, but there were no significant differences in the absorption of the other substances. The failure to demonstrate any difference in the absorption of these substances is probably related to their low concentration relative to the maximum absorptive capacity of the intestine. In both groups of subjects the kinetic advantage of glycyl-glycine absorption as compared with glycine absorption was maintained. When the dipeptides were perfused, free amino acids appeared in the perfusate presumably by back diffusion from the mucosal cells. In the case of glycyl-L-leucine considerably more glycine and leucine were found in the perfusate in patients with sprue than in ...
Tropical sprue (TS) is a syndrome characterized by acute or chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and malabsorption of nutrients. It occurs in residents of or visitors to the tropics and subtropics.
Tropical sprue is a disorder characterized by abnormalities in the lining of the small intestine that may result in poor absorption of folic acid and salts.

small intestines lining.. Usually, the enzymes break such sugars into the simple sugars including glucose, which are later absorbed into the bloodstream through the wall of persons intestine. If the needed enzymes are lacking, the sugars can not be absorbed, and is the reason why sugars remain in the persons small intestine. High sugar concentration draws fluids into the small intestine, resulting in diarrhea.. Unabsorbed sugars are then fermented by bacterias in the persons large intestine causing flatulence and acidic stool. Deficiency of the enzymes happen in intestines infections, tropical sprue, and celiac disease. Deficiency of the enzyme also may be congenital, or it may be resulted from antibiotics such as neomycin. Some lactose intolerance degree happens in approx. 75% of adults.. Individuals, who have lactose intolerance, generally can not tolerate milk and other products containing milk. Some individuals notice this early in their life and trying to avoid dairy products. Conclusions 179 I In a previous communication (1), one of us (Boyd, 1920) called attention to the existence in Texas of indigenous cases of a disease considered to be sprue, and reported the isolation of Ashford's monilia from them. The potential importance of this disease demanded that the scope of these observations be extended. During the past two years there has been conducted in this laboratory a study of the monilias of the gastrontestinal tract in relationship to sprue, the results of which are presented in this paper. II Since the previous communication there have come to our attention three additional cases presenting the symptomatology of sprue.
Fourteen adult patients whose main presenting features were edema, hypoproteinemia, and a dietary history of deficient intake of protein formed the material for the present study. They showed diarrhea, intestinal absorption defects, and structural alterations in the villi of jejunal biopsy specimens. They all had anemia and a little over one-half of them showed megaloblastosis in the bone marrow. After the base-line studies they were all treated with a diet containing 100 g of protein a day. Progressive improvement took place in all patients over a period of 3 months, clinically, hematologically, and in respect to intestinal absorptive function tests and intestinal mucosal histology. It is concluded that structural and functional disturbances occur in protein deficiency in adults as in children with kwashiorkor, and it is suggested that chronic protein malnutrition in adults may be an important factor in the genesis of the tropical malabsorption syndrome. ...
The build is complex and time consuming (it took me around ten hours to complete). Kotobukiyas signature laminations of sharply detailed parts creates a rich, layered series of components. The part count and construction process is roughly equal to Bandais Master Grade series. Kotobukiya mostly holds its own with MG models, but I found the sprue placement to be problematic. Whereas Bandai has honed its molding technique to incorporate conical sprues in discreet locations, this model uses big, fat sprues in highly visible places. As a moderately serious modeler, Im distracted by the sprue bruises in the final product, and not willing to go the next step to sand, putty, and paint the model to take it to the next level.. ...

Good post Gwen.. If I might add to it, I would say to the OP, (as he has given us VERY limited information) that:-. 1) secondary sprues/air holes may need to be increased in thickness and number (possibly no sprues have been used up to now?) Bring them up to the level of the funnel when full. This is very important.. 2) Temperature of the aluminium may need to be increased. 3) Mould may need to be heated to a higher temperature before pouring. 4) The size of the funnel part and the hole leading into the mould may need to be increased quite dramatically. Thus allowing more weight of liquid aluminium to force the molten aluminium into the mould. This also means that a far greater amount of aluminium must be melted for each pour and more sprue material must be cut off and made good.... 5) Cleanliness of mould is suspect. Blow though with air before usage.. 6) aluminium scrap is being reused without proper cleaning of the molten metal?. 7) The crucible is not being properly cleaned.. I am sure ...
Injection molding small milligram components requires precise metering and high-speed injection. Industrially, metering can be maintained either by using small injection screws (≤14 mm in diameter) or plungers as small as 3 mm diameter and/or by having very large sprues and runners. Although large sprues and runners increase metering volume, they hide the effect of process parameters on microcomponents. Consequently, knowledge of conventional injection molding is not transferable to microinjection molding, making quality control and optimization difficult. We investigated the filling and postfilling behavior of 25 mm3 microdumbbell specimens with 289 mm3 sprue and runner by in-line process monitoring. Design of Experiments were carried out to characterize the effects of process parameters on cavity filling and postfilling behavior. Process characterization indicated that the machine transition from velocity control to pressure control (V-P transition) was around 10 ms: this was comparable to ...

As you can read in my review, you get 10 (or in my case, 11) sprues, 3 (or 4) zeds per sprue. That surely allows you for MILLIONS of combinations, with different arm (yes, only one), torso, legs, head, different angles etc etc. But the cruel reality is, they still look all the same. Rougly one third has arms stretched out, chasing things, 1/3 has one arm lift up, pointing left, like signalising, 33.3% are bowed forward like theyre puking or at least saying hello to Japan. You can make some crawlers, but those are all the same, too. And making a crawler leaves you with torsoless legs, which isnt too zombific. I mean, no brains = no walking dead. And what you get there is a walking spine. I made one and wont do it anymore. I did more crawlers, which leaves me with spare legs. Again, keep in mind I like mantic and keep in mind that even as I prefer WGF zombies, story is the same. Plastic zeds are anyways more or less meant for bulking the horde and if you are a beginner, as myself, buy 1 box of ...

The box contains 3 sprues and the lower and upper hull. All in all, theres 75 parts, but 30 of those are cannons, so theres really only about 40 parts to be assembled. Prepare, however, for tackling at least as many seams. There is a lot of flash and some quick dry-fitting tells me Ill have a lot of work sanding all the parts flush. The hull parts are slightly warped and no amount of tape or clamps will fit them nicely together. The starboard side is acceptable, with the upper hull protruding about 0.2-0.5 mm, easily solved with (a lot of) sanding. The portside easily protrudes up to 2 mm, so that will require either hard work or simply accepting the way it fits ...

This particular project had been in the back of my head for a few years but I had left it for some day when I didn t have any inspiration for any of my normal (conversion) projects. It consists of building the Italeri Sherman M4A1 (kit no 225) more or less as is. Don t misunderstand me, I don t mean out of the box, rather without converting it. I decided that I would try to bring the kit up to state of the art standard by detailing and correcting it.. I knew I had a couple of Italeri kits stashed away, but I also knew I had a lot of whole sprues left over from previous conversions. After rummaging through my Sherman spares box I found out that my assumption was a big understatement I had two complete kits as spares. Feeling slightly embarrassed I decided that I would only use parts and detail sets that I had already bought. No new purchases for this project!. The purpose of this article is to show what can be done with an old (I remember building it for the first time some time in the ...

Malabsorption Syndrome generally lose weight, if fat is not absorbed properly; the stool can be bulky, soft, foul smelling, and light covered.. The stool can stick to the toilet bowls side or can be float and be hard to flush away. Steatorrhea is caused by any conditions interfering with the fats absorption such as tropical sprue, celiac disease or lowered bile flow. Malabsorption may result in mineral, vitamin, fats or protein deficiencies.. The symptoms of Malabsorption Syndrome vary, based on certain deficiencies. For instance, individuals with enzyme (called lactose) deficiency can have flatulence after drinking milk, abdominal bloating, and severe diarrhea. Other symptoms of Malabsorption Syndrome depends on disease, that is resulting in the malabsorbtion. For instance, poor intestine blood supply to the persons intestine can result in abdominal ache after eating;or obstructed bile ducts can result in jaundice. The physician suggests Malapsorption Syndrome, when an individual has diarrhea ...
4. Potential (latent): No symptoms, positive celiac antibodies but normal small bowel biopsy. The incidence of classical celiac disease is 1:4500, but the incidence of atypical, asymptomatic, and latent is 1:133. Celiac disease is not a rare disease like so many of us were taught during medical school.. The duodenal biopsy remains important for celiac disease diagnosis in adults and must be performed prior to a patient starting on a gluten-free diet. As discussed elsewhere during the conference, a gluten challenge in adults consists of eating at least 1/2 slice of bread for 2 weeks prior to a small bowel biopsy (and 6 weeks prior to celiac blood antibody testing).. Although villous blunting is the hallmark of celiac disease on small bowel biopsy, there are other diseases that can also cause villous blunting, which include tropical sprue, infections (Giardia, Cryptosporidia), Crohns Disease, small bowel bacterial overgrowth, olemsartan enteropathy, autoimmune enteropathy, and Graft v. What Is It?Celiac disease (also called non-tropical sprue, celiac sprue, gluten intolerance and gluten-sensitive enteropathy) is an intestinal disorder in which the body cannot tolerate gluten. Initially, the patient appeared to have classic coeliac disease, with diarrhoea and weight loss together with a positive serology. The endoscopy was crucial as the duodenal biopsies identified the presence of a thick band-like deposit of collagen just below the duodenal epithelium. On the basis of this finding, collagenous sprue was diagnosed.. Collagenous sprue was first described in 1947,1 but it was not until 1970 that Weinstein et al. introduced it as a diagnostic term to the medical nomenclature.2 Collagenous sprue is more frequent in females and in individuals who have other autoimmune diseases.3 It is now recognised that collagenous sprue shares similar clinical features with coeliac disease, such as chronic diarrhoea, anaemia and weight loss. In addition, the endoscopic and histological features of both diseases are similar, with an atrophic and scalloped duodenal mucosa. However, the histological hallmark of collagenous sprue is the presence of a thick subepithelial collagen band. Such ...
Celiac sprue - foods to avoid. Celiac disease causes inflammation in the small intestine and damage in the lining. This prevents the body from properly absorbing the nutrients in food. The damage to the lining of the intestine comes from a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats, and in food made from these ingredients. The inability to absorb nutrients can lead to weight loss, fatigue, malnourishment, and other health problems. Gluten may be found in many foods, especially processed foods and baked goods. Breads, cakes, desserts, alcoholic beverages (except wine), cereals, and pastas may all contain gluten. Eating a gluten-free diet heals the intestines and prevents further damage.. ...

In 1998, Cellier et al in a seminal paper stated that intestinal IELs from patients with refractory sprue are clonal and display an abnormal phenotype with antigenic loss, including that of CD8 and the β-chain of the TCR.13Initially, the precise nature (reactive, neoplastic) of these T cell populations was uncertain. Evidence has now accumulated suggesting that these T cells are an early manifestation of EITCL: some of these refractory sprue patients developed overt EITCL containing the same clonal rearrangements in their overt lymphomas as in the duodenal biopsies. Furthermore, patients with EITCL may show identical clonal rearrangements throughout their intestinal mucosa as in their main tumour.14-17 As these data have an important impact on our understanding of the pathogenesis of sprue syndromes and EITCL as well as on the histopathological diagnosis of these diseases, we wished to define the frequency and specificity of these findings in a larger patient group. To test the diagnostic ...

Thank you to everyone who has replied. About Candida - yes, I did read the link - and find it very interesting. I had a yeast infection for 18 months - and Candida for who knows how long. Hopefully I will get a call from him soon. I spoke with my general practitioner - after emailing her the results - and she said that, it looks like refractory sprue. Im not sure how familiar you guys are with that so Im going to quote the section on it from the book, Celiac Disease by Peter Green. Ive been really good about the diet - I watch everything I eat. we were talking with Frank and Mike asked him if he drinks milk. Frank retorted, No, Im not a baby. Hes right. Dairy contains lectins (sugar-binding proteins) from grain fed animals. The actual word lectin comes from the Latin word legere or to select. Gluten that is found in grains leads to the damage of the nutrient absorbent villi and microvilli in our intestines. You may have heard of the autoimmune disorder called Celiac Sprue. In this disorder, the microvilli of the intestines are destroyed. This condition causes the inability to absorb fats, minerals, and many vitamins. Im certainly not saying, nor is Robb Wolf, that if you eat grains you will get Celiac Sprue. What is true however is that there is irritation with almost all grain consumption. This is commonly referred to as leaky gut syndrome. Gross. According to Robb Wolf, the theory is that once the gut lining is damaged, large food particles are able to make their way into the blood stream. The immune system then tries to ...
