Sports medicine? I suppose that means treating frisbee injuries." I am told that this comment was made with a slight sneer and a snort of derision by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. It reminds me of a similar incident about 12 years ago when I was attending a GP refresher course, and a consultant rheumatologist informed his audience that "there is no such thing as a sports injury".. I find such comments sad and not a little frightening. Sad, because they reveal a lack of knowledge, understanding, and a suspiciously closed mind. Frightening because a statement made by an "expert" in this way is taken at face value by the trusting recipients, who, in turn, pass it on, leading to a cascade of misinformation.. Let me set the record straight. I need hardly comment on the reality of sports injuries and the practice of sports medicine; you are already reading this journal. However, I cannot allow the reference to frisbee to pass unanswered! I have been medical advisor to the British Ultimate ...

As a sports medicine physician I have been fortunate to cover a lot of exciting sporting events and I have seen a lot of interesting cases. I have taken care of a wrestler who had a stroke. I have rushed an NFL player to the hospital with a pneumothorax. I have stitched up my share of hockey players bleeding all over the ice and Ive evaluated countless unconscious athletes on the field. I have been a ringside fight doc and I have even been at the bottom of the X-games mega ramp to evaluate a skateboarder who fell 50 feet in the air and landed on his head. These have all been unforgettable and sometimes frightening experiences. But no matter how big the athletes or how extreme the sports, nothing really scares me anymore as a sports medicine doctor… That is, except for one. There is still one sports medicine nightmare.. Being a sideline team physician can be a little scary at first because you never know what kind of trauma to expect. Sometimes it is the subtlety of a concussion and sometimes ...

A leader of each working group presented a review of the most recent scientific papers in each topic. Some 2000+ papers were assessed and culled using key words/criteria in each group to sometimes only 15 papers.. A summary of evidence in each area was presented to the forum. Each session included scientific presentations on that session topic and attendees from the floor added comments, suggestions or even disagreements. These comments were recorded and over the next two days the leaders met to write up the new International consensus position statement. It is due for publication in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in the first third of next year.. What did I learn?. The definition of concussion is largely agreed upon by experts, although there is no uniform definition in the scientific literature. There was agreement on a definition as "change in brain function due to a transfer of energy to the brain and its associated structures".. No definition proposed a prognosis for recovery, and ...
