AbstractAlthough general knowledge of Ramariopsis subarctica Pilát has advanced in the past four decades, there is still little understanding of how the species is distributed and which aspects of the environment determine its distribution. This paper presents the first Polish collections of the species. Hitherto unknown in Poland, R. subarctica is reported from two localities in subalpine belts of the West Tatra Mts and Karkonosze Mts. The morphology of newly collected basidiomata of the fungus is described, illustrated and commented, and some basic chemical parameters of its habitat in the Karkonosze Mts are given. All available published material relevant to the global distribution and ecology of R. subarctica is reviewed.

When X and Y are multivariate, the two-block partial least squares (PLS) method is often used. In this paper, we outline an extension addressing a special case of the three-block (X/Y/Z) problem, where Z sits "under" Y. We have called this approach three-block bi-focal PLS (3BIF-PLS). It views the X/Y relationship as the dominant problem, and seeks to use the additional information in Z in order to improve the interpretation of the Y-part of the X/Y association. Two data sets are used to illustrate 3BIF-PLS. Example I relates to single point mutants of haloalkane dehalogenase from Sphingomonas paucimobilis UT26 and their ability to transform halogenated hydrocarbons, some of which are found as organic pollutants in soil. For an ecology project, my lab group added vinegar to 4 tanks containing equal volumes of pond water, 1 control with no elodea (an aquatic plant) and 3 treatments with the same amount of elodea in each. The purpose of adding the vinegar was to reduce the pH. The hypothesis was that the tanks with elodea would go back to their normal pH quicker. This was indeed the case. We measured the pH of each tank daily for about two weeks. All the tanks eventually returned to their natural pH, but the length of time that this took was much shorter for the tanks with elodea.. When we told our professor about our experimental design, he said that there exists no statistical test that can be performed on the data to compare the control to the treatment. That because there was no replicate for the control (we only used one control tank) we cannot calculate variance and so we cant compare the sample means of the control and the treatment. Sphingomonads comprise a physiologically versatile group within the Alphaproteobacteria that includes strains of interest for biotechnology, human health, and environmental nutrient cycling. In this study, we compared 26 sphingomonad genome sequences to gain insight into their ecology, metabolic versatility, and environmental adaptations. Our multilocus phylogenetic and average amino acid identity (AAI) analyses confirm that Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, Sphingopyxis, and Novosphingobium are well-resolved monophyletic groups with the exception of Sphingomonas sp. strain SKA58, which we propose belongs to the genus Sphingobium. Our pan-genomic analysis of sphingomonads reveals numerous species-specific open reading frames (ORFs) but few signatures of genus-specific cores. As many of you know, the leaves of the aquatic plant, Elodea, consist of two layers of photosynthetic cells. Can anyone explain the derivation of these two layers during leaf development? I assume they are derived from ground meristem as opposed to protoderm. If this is correct, what happens to the original protoderm assuming it is formed at all? Drug delivery to the nasal and ocular mucosa faces several obstacles. One of these is from the effective clearance mechanisms present in the nose and eye. Polymer gels with suitable rheological properties can facilitate the absorption of poorly absorbed drugs by increasing the contact time of the drug with the mucosa. This has been attributed to the rheological and mucoadhesive properties of the gel. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the importance of these features for the anticipated in vivo contact time, here exemplified by the ocular and nasal routes of administration.. The in situ gelling polymer gellan gum was found to have a favourable rheological and in vivo performance. Metabolism of a low-soluble substrate is limited by dissolution and availability and can hardly be determined. We developed a numerical model simultaneously calculating dissolution kinetics of such substrates, its metabolism and microbial growth (Monod kinetics with decay) and tested it with three aerobic phenanthrene (PHE) degraders: Novosphingobium pentaromativorans US6-1, Sphingomonas sp. EPA505 and Sphingobium yanoikuyae B1. PHE was present as microcrystals, providing non-limiting conditions for growth. Total PHE and protein concentration were tracked over 6 to 12 days. The model was fitted to the test results for the rates of dissolution, metabolism and growth. The strains showed similar efficiency, with vmax values of 12 to 18 g dw g-1 d-1, yields of 0.21 g g-1, maximum growth rates of 2.5 to 3.8 d-1 and decay rates of 0.04 to 0.05 d-1.
