At first sight, echolocating bats face a difficult trade-off. As flying animals, they would benefit from a streamlined geometric shape to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase flight efficiency. However, as echolocating animals, their pinnae generate the acoustic cues necessary for navigation and foraging. Moreover, species emitting sound through their nostrils often feature elaborate noseleaves that help in focussing the emitted echolocation pulses. Both pinnae and noseleaves reduce the streamlined character of a bats morphology. It is generally assumed that by compromising the streamlined charactered of the geometry, the head morphology generates substantial drag, thereby reducing flight efficiency. In contrast, it has also been suggested that the pinnae of bats generate lift forces counteracting the detrimental effect of the increased drag. However, very little data exist on the aerodynamic properties of bat pinnae and noseleaves. In this work, the aerodynamic forces generated by the heads of seven

N2 - The septin gene belongs to a highly conserved family of polymerizing GTP-binding cytoskeletal proteins. SEPTs perform cytoskeletal remodeling, cell polarity, mitosis, and vesicle trafficking by interacting with various cytoskeletons. Our previous studies have indicated that SEPTIN12+/+/+/- chimeras with a SEPTIN12 mutant allele were infertile. Spermatozoa from the vas deferens of chimeric mice indicated an abnormal sperm morphology, decreased sperm count, and immotile sperm. Mutations and genetic variants of SEPTIN12 in infertility cases also caused oligozoospermia and teratozoospermia. We suggest that a loss of SEPT12 affects the biological function of microtublin functions and causes ...
What testing would you do on sperm quality? We know that count and motility arent that relevant because we already have to do ICSI. Its really a quality issue. Am I putting a sperm in an egg that could lead to a healthy embryo? He recommended two tests 1) a chromosome analysis done on his blood. This would be done on me too. They would be looking for a translocation. 2) Sperm Chromatin Assay. This asks the question: so he does have all of the 46 chromosomes in the sperm head. Are they organized in an orderly fashion or are they starting to fragment and break up? Its either called a sperm chromatin assay or DNA fragmentation assay. He said if the DNA are starting to fragment or break up in the sperm head, it can cause embryo quality to be poor. He said that if both these tests came back normal, then it would be all about the egg ...

After spermatids form, they move into the epididymis to mature into sperm, like the one shown in Figure below. The spermatids grow a tail and lose excess cytoplasm from the head. When a sperm is mature, the tail can rotate like a propeller, so the sperm can propel itself forward. Mitochondria in the connecting piece produce the energy (ATP) needed for movement. The head of the mature sperm consists mainly of the nucleus, which carries copies of the fathers chromosomes. The part of the head called the acrosome produces enzymes that help the sperm head penetrate an egg.. ...

Journal of Morphology - early view. Abstract. Astroblepidae or climbing catfishes encompass a single genus of species living in high altitude rivers in the Andes of South America. They are characterized by a specialized head morphology closely resembling their better known, widely radiated sister family Loricariidae, or armored suckermouth catfishes. Existent data show that even though both families share important traits, there are some striking differences as well. Albeit poorly known, Astroblepus species possess a duplicated gill opening, and have the ability to climb vertical rocks or waterfalls. In this study, morphological and kinematic data are combined to yield insights into the functions of the mobile elements of the astroblepid head, and to compare head morphology and biomechanics with those of Loricariidae. We found that, even though there is substantial similarity in head structure of both families, there are major differences in functionally important structures. These include a ...
The size of the optic nerve head, referred to as disc area (DA), and the vertical cup-disc ratio (VCDR), are clinically relevant parameters for glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Although these measures have a high heritability, little is known about the underlying genes. Previously, the genes SALL1 and SIX1 were found to be genome-wide significantly associated with DA and VCDR. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether genes encoding protein known to interact with protein encoded by SALL1 and SIX1 are also associated with either DA or VCDR.A total of 38 candidate genes were chosen covering all known proteins interacting with SALL1 and SIX1. These were initially studied in the Rotterdam Study (RS)-I, including 5312 Caucasian subjects characterized for DA and VCDR. Positive findings were further investigated in two independent cohorts (RS-II and RS-III) and finally replicated in a fourth population (ERF). Bonferroni correction was applied to the meta-analyses.Three loci were found to be

The development opens up the possibility of infertile men being able to father their own children rather than using donor sperm.. Researchers in Germany and Israel were able to grow mouse sperm from a few cells in a laboratory dish.. In a world first a team headed by Professor Stefan Schlatt, at Muenster University in Germany, were able to grow sperm by using germ cells. These are the cells in testicles that are responsible for sperm production.. Scientists grew the sperm by surrounding the germ cells in a special compound called agar jelly to create an environment similar to that found in testicles.. Prof. Mahmoud Huleihel, who also grew the sperm at Israels Ben Gurion University in Beersheba, said: I believe it will eventually be possible to routinely grow human male sperm to order by extracting tissue containing germ cells from a mans testicle and stimulating sperm production in the laboratory.. The findings of the sperm trial have been revealed in a major scientific journal published by ...
Postdoctoral Research Associate: Isolation and characterization of sperm-expressed genes and proteins from Zea mays Despite the crucial role of sperm in fertilization, virtually nothing is known about sperm cell gene expression, largely because sperm cells in the quantities necessary for molecular and biochemical characterization could not be obtained, and because partially purified sperm cells are often highly contaminated with the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell. The postdoc will prepare cDNA libraries from highly purified maize sperm (available via our collaboration with the RDP, Lyon, France) and sequence large numbers of clones, in order to obtain a representation of sperm -expressed genes. Proteins important for interactions with the female cells will likely be located on the surface of sperm. To enrich for genes encoding sperm-surface proteins, the sperm cDNA library will be cloned into a yeast vector; cDNAs that encode secreted proteins allow an invertase mutant of yeast to grow. Once ...

The study was undertaken to examine whether Carcinosin-200 (Car-200) could provide additional ameliorative effect, if used intermittently with Natrum sulphuricum-30 (Nat Sulph-30) against hepatocarcinogenesis induced by chronic feeding of p-dimethylaminoazobenzene (p-DAB) and phenobarbital (PB) in mice (Mus musculus). Mice were randomly divided into seven sub-groups: (i) normal untreated; (ii) normal + succussed alcohol; (iii) p-DAB (0.06%) + PB (0.05%); (iv) p-DAB + PB + succussed alcohol, (v) p-DAB + PB + Nat Sulph-30, (vi) p-DAB + PB + Car-200, and (vii) p-DAB + PB + Nat Sulph-30 + Car-200. They were sacrificed at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days for assessment of genotoxicity through cytogenetical end-points like chromosome aberrations, micronuclei, mitotic index and sperm head anomaly and cytotoxicity through assay of widely accepted biomarkers and pathophysiological parameters. Additionally, electron microscopic studies and gelatin zymography for ...

New World marsupials such as the lab opossum, Monodelphis domestica, have a remarkable characteristic unknown in other vertebrate animals: sperm pairing. After maturation in the male reproductive tract, sperm undergo a series of maneuvers, resulting in the precise alignment and adhesion of two adjacent sperm heads. Work in our lab suggests that such maneuvers are facilitated by temporary but simultaneous sperm adhesion to a planar surface, ensuring that sperm-sperm adhesion occurs only at the acrosomal surface of the sperm head. Work by others indicates that paired sperm swim faster and more efficiently than unpaired sperm. Paired sperm unpair just before encountering an egg during fertilization. Thus, the sperm pairing adaptation ensures successful reproduction. The mechanics of sperm pairing remain unknown. A candidate adhesive agent is Sperm Adhesion Molecule 1 (SPAM1), a glycoprotein that has been localized in the male and female reproductive tract, and on the sperm heads of many mammals. This study
Spermiogenesis describes the differentiation of haploid germ cells into motile, fertilization-competent spermatozoa. During this fundamental transition the species-specific sperm head is formed, which necessitates profound nuclear restructuring coincident with the assembly of sperm-specific structures and chromatin compaction. In the case of the mouse, it is characterized by reshaping of the early round spermatid nucleus into an elongated sickle-shaped sperm head. This tremendous shape change requires the transduction of cytoskeletal forces onto the nuclear envelope (NE) or even further into the nuclear interior. LINC (linkers of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton) complexes might be involved in this process, due to their general function in bridging the NE and thereby physically connecting the nucleus to the peripheral cytoskeleton. LINC complexes consist of inner nuclear membrane integral SUN-domain proteins and outer nuclear membrane KASH-domain counterparts. SUN- and KASH-domain proteins are ...

Onychophoran sperm share striking apomorphies with sperm of oligochaetes: the elongate, cylindrical, strongly condensed nucleus with (enchytraeid oligochaetes only) spiral keel(s); interpolation of mitochondria, which are spiral as in some microdriles, between nucleus and axoneme (autapomorphy); presence of postmitochondrial annulus; occurrence of a basal cylinder at the anterior end of the two central singlets (autapomorphy). Onychophoran sperm differ notably from oligochaete sperm: in possessing periacrosomal material; in the helical coiling, reduction, or absence of the acrosome vesicle (though acrosomal coiling occurs in leeches); in the conical subacrosomal structure contrasting with the characteristic acrosome tube of euclitellates; in the absence of a perforatorium (though these two features could be consequent on the reduction of the acrosome); in lacking a distinct padlike thickening of the anterior nuclear envelope; in possessing (external to the mutual 9 + 2 axoneme) 9 peripheral ...
A fundamental question concerning spermatozoan dynamics is guidance: how does a sperm know where to go, or indeed, does it, or is it merely a case that so many sperm are released that random motility is nonetheless sufficient. However, following insemination in humans, the observed presence at any given time of only 10-1000 sperm within the expanse of the fallopian tubes suggest randomness alone is implausible in bringing the sperm to the egg at this point [1], whereas highly directed motility is also recorded in video-microscopy of sperm motility in the bovine female reproductive tract [2]. Furthermore, marine external fertilizers such as sea urchin sperm exhibit an extensive chemotactic response [3], which is reported to improve the chances of reproductive success [4] and is reviewed by Alvarez et al. [5].. Such observations of sea urchin sperm have previously generated the hypothesis that chemotaxis is also important for mammals [6] and a further suggested mammalian sperm guidance mechanism ...

The Wi-Fi issue was published last week and has my patients all worked up. In this Argentinean study, researchers placed one half of the semen samples from 29 healthy men under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. They put the other half far away from a Wi-Fi equipped computer. A better control group would have been to keep the control sperm under the computer like the exposed sperm but with the computer turned on but disconnected to Wi-Fi. The temperature of the sperm dishes was kept constant, so any effect would not be thermal in nature. After four hours, 25% of the sperm exposed to Wi-Fi stopped moving forward, and 9% showed DNA damage. In contrast, only 14% of the sperm placed some distance from the Wi-Fi equipped computer stopped moving forward and 3% showed DNA damage.. Importantly, the proportion of sperm that was dead was exactly the same in each case, so the exposure did not actually kill the sperm. The biggest difference they found was that sperm exposed to Wi-Fi lost the ...

The word sperm is derived from the Greek word Sperma which stands for seed. Sperm is the male reproductive cell and produced in the male reproductive organ, i.e., testes. The process in which sperm produced is known as spermatogenesis. They are known as the smallest and straightest cell in human anatomy. It is about60 um long and a flagellated motile cell. A sperm cell is divided into different parts like the head, neck, long tail and middle piece with a small nucleus and low amount of cytoplasm. Mitochondria are present in the middle of the cell in spiral and compact form. A sperm cell can be frozen and conserved below 60-degree Celsius in the womb of the female. Production of human sperms is a noncyclic process, and they keep on producing throughout the life of the man. ...

Males from the northern and drier edge of the species range were found to have smaller testes containing fewer, smaller and less motile sperm, meanwhile. Sperm taken from males originating from high moisture sites had significantly longer tail and head lengths on average, resulting in greater total sperm lengths. Interestingly, sperm from males found at the wet sites was also narrower, which may help them attain greater speeds. The team speculate that the the window of mating opportunity is smaller for populations where rainfall is infrequent.. This results in explosive breeding patterns in these dryer sites and consequently a relaxation in the level of sperm competition. Other factors, such as differences in resource availability and genetics, may also play a role in testes and sperm. ...
Sperm cells swim very efficiently when moving upstream against a current and may cooperate whilst doing so, scientists have observed. Researchers found that when sperm cells are faced with a current, they swim in a spiralling motion, rather than in a straight line, and move towards where the current is slowest. This causes the cells to accumulate in groups, swimming in shoals.. This challenges the commonly held belief that sperm cells compete to reach the egg cell first. There could actually be cooperation among these cells that allows them to swim faster collectively, said Dr Jörn Dunkel, lead researcher on the study.. Hundreds of millions of sperm cells enter the oviduct, or Fallopian tube, however only a select few will reach the egg. They have to cover distances more than 1,000 times their length and navigate complex terrain. To try to understand how sperm cells manage this, researchers set up an artificial sperm assault course in the lab. They used a variety of sizes of channels and ...
Infertility, not being able to conceive after a year of trying for a baby, affects around one in six couples. Problems with sperm - for example low numbers of rapid swimming sperm, or poorly-formed sperm (which may have damaged DNA) contribute in around half of all cases. Therapies such as IVF, or ICSI (injection of sperm into an egg) are used to treat sperm-related problems, however they are ineffective, are very expensive and put physical and emotional strain on the couple, particularly the woman. Worryingly, using sperm with damaged DNA may contribute to miscarriage or health problems in any resulting children. Some patients would be better off continuing to try for a baby naturally, but with some lifestyle changes (stopping smoking, improving diet), or with a less invasive treatment (insemination into the womb). Other patients should be quickly moved to IVF, some will only conceive through ICSI. The difficulty with treatment decisions is that methods to determine the type and severity of ...

The research published online Feb. 16 in the journal Current Biology opens up the potential of developing new forms of birth control and fertility treatment - and even new ways to combat many forms of cancer.. Sperm and other cells go through a sort of inspection process triggered by a key regulatory gene, p53, which orders the destruction of cells with damaged DNA. This ability has earned it the title of guardian of the genome, and damage to p53 has been implicated in many forms of cancer.. By studying sperm production in mice, we have identified p53s new boss, which controls p53 in a way that had been hypothesized before but had not been shown in any animal, said Haifan Lin, professor of cell biology and of genetics, director of the Yale Stem Cell Center, and senior author of the paper.. The Yale team found among more than 1,500 micro-RNA molecules involved in many cellular processes, a regulator called Pumilo 1 controls eight that interact with p53 in sperm production. When Pumilo 1 is ...

The forces of order are, in other words, a little more professional, more bourgeois. Likewise the decor is more in keeping with Germanys parlous state. Indeed, one could say desks are the heroes of the piece. Beautifully composed workspaces litter the film, filling the screen like still lifes. A pane of glass bearing enigmatic scratch marks is the object of a number of wonderful compositions before they are finally deciphered as spelling Mabuse. Later, as the tide turns, Lohmann shows one of Mabuses captured associates the evidence: two bullets in a little case are set against a beautiful composition of file and gun, all crisscrossing at 45 degrees. As the crim looks on, an oblong magnifying glass glides into view, perfectly covering the case. Round-headed Lohmann stands behind the desk in a spotlight with the map of the city behind him. Order has almost been restored. But desks also communicate with each other in some pretty strange ways. At the very start, fallen cop Hofmeister has already ...
