Abstract : Language does not evolve in an isolated manner, in its own purely cultural realm where the only factors that influence it are language internal. In fact, a series of extra-linguistic factors including latitude, altitude, humidity and deafness arguably have an impact on the way language evolves (diachronically) and on the patterns of linguistic diversity (synchronically). Therefore, I will argue that such small biases "nudge" the process of language evolution through its repeated use and transmission, playing a part in explaining the observed trajectories of language change and patterns of diversity. Here, I will focus in particular on the potential effects that the anatomy and physiology of the vocal tract might have on speech production. Phase One was designed to determine judgment reliability and any procedural variables that might influence judgments. Sex judgments were more accurate on the speakers second performances. Both sex and masculine-feminine judgments were more accurate on reading than on spontaneous speech. There are also signs that the lower the blood flow in regions of the brain tied to speech and language, the more severe the stuttering, the researchers added.. "When other portions of the brain circuit related to speech were also affected according to our blood flow measurements, we saw more severe stuttering in both children and adults," said study first author Dr. Jay Desai. He is a clinical neurologist at Childrens Hospital, Los Angeles..
