Ex. 1.5 A: To calculate the VOC of a coating from a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) one needs to multiply the percent weight (organic) solvent (% Wt. solvents), or (% Wt. volatiles) by the density of the coating. Density is sometimes given as WPG (weight per gallon).. For instance, if the % Wt. (organic) volatiles = 48% and the WPG = 9.4 lbs/gal, the VOC content = 0.48 * 9.4 lbs/gal = 4.51 lbs/gal.. If the density is not given in lbs/gal but as specific gravity (S.G), such as S.G. = 1.5 you need to multiply by 8.33 lbs/gal.. Changes in body water elicit reflex adjustments at the kidney, thus maintaining fluid volume homeostasis. These renal adjustments change the concentration and color of urine, variables that can, in turn, be used as biomarkers of hydration status. It has been suggested that vitamin supplementation alters urine color; it is unclear whether any such alteration would confound hydration assessment via colorimetric evaluation. We tested the hypothesis that overnight vitamin B2 and/or B12 supplementation alters urine color as a marker of hydration status. Thirty healthy volunteers were monitored during a 3-day euhydrated baseline, confirmed via first morning nude body mass, urine specific gravity, and urine osmolality. Volunteers then randomly received B2 (n = 10), B12 (n = 10), or B2 + B12 (n = 10) at ∼200 × recommended dietary allowance. The simplest approach would be to degas a sample and measure its specific gravity with a vintners hydrometer. Despite the fact that many refractometers sold to aquarists recommend calibration in pure water, such a calibration alone will not ensure accuracy for the reasons described above. So my recommendation for calibration is as follows:. 1. First calibrate the refractometer in pure freshwater. This can be distilled water, RO (reverse osmosis) water, RO/DI water, bottled water and even tap water with reasonably low TDS (total dissolved solids). Calibrating with tap water that has a TDS value of 350 ppm introduces only about a 1% error in salinity, causing readings in seawater to read a bit low. So 35 ppt seawater (specific gravity = 1.0264) will read to be about 34.7 ppt, and will show a specific gravity of about 1.0261.. This calibration should ordinarily be carried out at room temperature using an ATC refractometer. Cakes typically contain large quantities of sucrose which affects not only flavor but also color, volume, and texture. This study evaluated the effect of replacing sucrose in white layer cakes with polydextrose and two artificial sweeteners: sucralose and stevia extract. White layer cakes were made using AACCI Method 10-90.01. Batter properties were evaluated by measuring specific gravity. Volume index was measured using a cake template (AACCI Method 10-91.01).
