Bacterial canker of kiwifruit, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), is a disease that is spreading rapidly in several kiwifruit-producing countries, causing significant economic losses. In 2011, it was detected for the first time in Spain, in the south of Galicia (northwest Spain). Kiwifruit orchards were therefore inspected and sampled in 2011 and 2012 to determine the pathogen distribution, and the isolates obtained were characterized by morphology, fatty acids profile, biochemical tests and molecular techniques. Isolates were obtained from Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward' (from leaves, canes, flower buds, fruits and roots), from A.deliciosa 'Summer', from Actinidia chinensis 'Jin Tao' (from canes and leaves) and from A.chinensis pollinator 'Belen' (from canes). Results of the analysis of the cfl gene (phytotoxin production-related), the tox-argK gene cluster and phylogenetic analysis of the cts gene demonstrated that all Psa isolates from northwest ...
Background: Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) is the leading cause of late nonrelapse mortality (transplant-related mortality) after hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Given that there are a wide range of treatment options for cGvHD, assessment of the associated costs and efficacy can help clinicians and health care providers allocate health care resources more efficiently. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) compared with rituximab (Rmb) and with imatinib (Imt) in patients with cGvHD at 5 years from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System. Methods: The model assessed the incremental cost-effectiveness/utility ratio of ECP versus Rmb or Imt for 1000 hypothetical patients by using microsimulation cost-effectiveness techniques. Model probabilities were obtained from the literature. Treatment pathways and adverse events were evaluated taking clinical opinion and published reports into consideration. ...
Perhaps nothing captures how far off the rails we have reached in Catalonia than the divergent treatment given to two people before the referendum, Arnaldo Otegi, a condemned former member of the Basque terrorist group ETA, who continues to press for an independent Basque Country, and Joan Manuel Serrat, the Catalan singer-songwriter, an iconic figure censored by the Franco regime. While Otegi was guest of honour at the Catalan national day, Serrat was labelled a traitor and fascist for questioning the referendum. How did we get here? Very simplistically, the turning point came in 2010 when the Constitutional Court in Madrid ruled there was no legal basis to recognise Catalonia as a nation and that the Catalan language should not take precedence over Castilian Spanish, among other things. This followed a challenge by the Popular Party, then in the opposition, to the new Catalan autonomy statute that was approved in 2006 in a referendum in the region and ratified in the Congress and Senate in ...
The project submitted by the Galicia-Norte Portugal EGTC was among the awarded projects under the 3rd B-Solutions call by the Association of European Border Regions and the European Commission - DG REGIO. The project will focus on the problematic risen by the cars circulation guide required for cross border workers between Galicia and North Portugal, but also along the whole Spanish Portuguese border. This bureaucratic issue hinders the movement in private cars for cross border workers in their daily commuting. This is the second time that an initiative presented by the Galicia Norte Portugal EGTC results awarded by the program B-Solutions. The experts precise work together with the collaboration of Xunta de Galicia and CCDR-N (regional governments), the Portuguese and the Spanish governments and the case study at the municipalities of Tomiño (Spain) and Vila Nova de Cerveira (Portugal), involving also many other institutions and our dedication, achieved a great result in our previous ...

For an event that was of paramount importance at the time, it is hard to believe that the development of an oil industry in Galicia barely exists in the historical consciousness. It really began in earnest during the middle of nineteenth century in Lemberg (Lviv, Ukraine) due to the efforts of two innovated men, Jan Zeh and Ignacy Lukasiewicz. Both worked at a pharmacy in the city. Zeh was the first man to develop a method to distill and purify oil. His persistence and dedication was legendary.. As the historian Alison Fleig Frank states in Oil Empire: Visions of Prosperity in Austrian Galicia (a book I highly recommend), he labored all night long without suitable equipment, suffering from persistent headaches and dizziness caused by the stinking, toxic gases. His clothes, hair, and skin were so saturated with the stench of burning oil that he was hardly able to appear in public. Zeh later reminisced that people avoided him, suspecting that he was insane; he even claimed that old ladies ...

A study coordinated by the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country did not detect any increase in antimicrobial susceptibility after applying a selective digestive decontamination (SDD) protocol. The research, conducted in collaboration with the Microbiology Service and the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Álava (Basque Country), where a selective digestive decontamination (SDD) protocol was implemented in 2002, did not find any increase in the acquisition rate of antibiotic resistance and found that the rate was no higher than that of Spanish intensive care units without the protocol.. The study was coordinated by researcher Alicia Rodríguez-Gascón of the UPV/EHUs Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology Laboratory, and set out to compare the rates of antimicrobial susceptibility at the intensive care unit (ICU) before and after the introduction of SDD and compare them with data on susceptibility of other Spanish ICUs without SDD. The research, titled Antibiotic ...

In the literature, data on the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in men vary significantly and the exact distribution of specific genotypes is still unclear. As infections usually occur without symptoms, men might only attend their hospital clinic when they have a specific concern, being in most cases genital warts (condylomas), which are often caused by low-risk HPV genotypes. The aim of this study was to assess HPV genotype distribution and prevalence among men attending hospital for HPV-associated conditions and to evaluate infection-associated factors. Samples from men with clinical manifestations of HPV-related infections seen during 2007-2012 at the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Control Department at Basurto University Hospital were genotyped using Linear Array HPV Genotyping Test kit (Roche Molecular Diagnostics, Germany). Data on probable risk factors were collected and investigated for possible association. Of 184 anogenital samples, 138 (75 %) were tested as positive

Andalusia sits at a latitude between 36º and 38º44 N, in the warm-temperate region. In general, it experiences a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers influenced by the Azores High, but subject to occasional torrential rains and extremely hot temperatures.[19][20] In the winter, the tropical anticyclones move south, allowing cold polar fronts to penetrate the region. Still, within Andalusia there is considerable climatic variety. From the extensive coastal plains one may pass to the valley of the Guadalquivir, barely above sea level, then to the highest altitudes in the Iberian peninsula in the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. In a mere 50 kilometres (31 mi) one can pass from the subtropical coast of the province of Granada to the snowy peaks of Mulhacén. Andalusia also includes both the dry Tabernas Desert in the province of Almería and the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in the province of Cádiz, which experiences Spains greatest rainfall.[21][22][23][24]. Annual rainfall in the Sierra de ...

Several European countries have decriminalized growing and possessing small amounts of cannabis. Switzerland has already got very relaxed drug laws with their cops looking the other way with drug use and from 1st January 2012 the official personal grow amounts of 4 plants per person will be legal e.g. 5 people living in a house can grow 20 plants. Spain has had very relaxed drug enforcement laws for along time, with smoking clubs allowing people to possess and grow cannabis. Will the US try to start a trade sanctions war against Spain to force them to criminalize their citizens in a similar way that they did when Canada said it was going to legalize cannabis. Denmark is going to only decriminalize cannabis due to this monetary threat of US & UN sanctions that are normally reserved for countries that kill (genocide) their own citizens e.g. Libya, Syria. ...
Background Despite the limited genetic heterogeneity of Spanish populations, substantial evidences support that historical African influences have not affected them uniformly. Accounting for such population differences might be essential to reduce spurious results in association studies of genetic factors with disease. Using ancestry informative markers (AIMs), we aimed to measure the African influences in Spanish populations and to explore whether these might introduce statistical bias in population-based association studies. Methodology/Principal Findings We genotyped 93 AIMs in Spanish (from the Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula) and Northwest Africans, and conducted population and individual-based clustering analyses along with reference data from the HapMap, HGDP-CEPH, and other sources. We found significant differences for the Northwest African influence among Spanish populations from as low as ≈5% in Spanish from the Iberian Peninsula to as much as ≈17% in Canary Islanders, whereas
Moderate alcohol intake has been related to lower mortality. However, alcohol use includes other dimensions beyond the amount of alcohol consumed. These aspects have not been sufficiently studied as a comprehensive entity. We aimed to test the relationship between an overall alcohol-drinking pattern and all-cause mortality. In a Mediterranean cohort study, we followed 18 394 Spanish participants up to 12 years. A validated 136-item FFQ was used to assess baseline alcohol intake. We developed a score assessing simultaneously seven aspects of alcohol consumption to capture the conformity to a traditional Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern (MADP). It positively scored moderate alcohol intake, alcohol intake spread out over the week, low spirit consumption, wine preference, red wine consumption, wine consumed during meals and avoidance of binge drinking. During the follow-up, 206 deaths were identified. For each 2-point increment in a 0-9 score of adherence to the MADP, we observed a 25 % ...
Overview and HistoryThe Canary Islands lie off the west coast of Africa and exist as an autonomous community belonging to Spain. There are seven major islands in the archipelago and one minor island, then several small pointy bits which grumble about their diminutive status. The big ones are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Lanzarote, El Hierro, and La Gomera. The whole group is the result of volcanic activity from 60 million years ago, which is why the beaches have black sand for you to crunch along on. There are no active volcanos at the moment, but one never knows. Another way to say it is that these islands are part of the Atlas Mountain range which can be traced across northern Africa. At one point in the 16th century the islands were called the sugar islands for their production of cane sugar. The economy has since developed wineries, agriculture and now tourism as principal activity.Getting ThereThe Canary Islands have six airports in total. Heres a quick reference for the ...

EN] The genetic variability of a Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus (CABYV) (genus Polerovirus, family Luteoviridae) population was evaluated by determining the nucleotide sequences of two genomic regions of CABYV isolates collected in open-field melon and squash crops during three consecutive years in Murcia (southeastern Spain). A phylogenetic analysis showed the existence of two major clades. The sequences did not cluster according to host, year, or locality of collection, and nucleotide similarities among isolates were 97 to 100 and 94 to 97% within and between clades, respectively. The ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous nucleotide substitutions reflected that all open reading frames have been under purifying selection. Estimates of the populations genetic diversity were of the same magnitude as those previously reported for other plant virus populations sampled at larger spatial and temporal scales, suggesting either the presence of CABYV in the surveyed area long before it was first ...
About 8,000 people have streamed into the Spanish city of Ceuta from Morocco in the past two days in an unprecedented influx, most of them swimming around breakwaters and across the border to reach the Spanish enclave in North Africa.. The surge has strained relations between Morocco and Spain, with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez canceling a trip to Paris to make an unscheduled visit to Ceuta, where Spain has deployed military reinforcements and police along the border. Heres a look at whats going on:. WHERE IS CEUTA?. Ceuta is a coastal city in North Africa that has belonged to Spain since the 16th century. Like Melilla, another Spanish possession on the Moroccan coast, Ceuta in recent decades has become a flashpoint for migrants from Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa seeking to enter Europe.. Last year about 2,200 people crossed into Ceuta and Melilla by scaling border fences or swimming from the Moroccan side. Ceuta has a population of 85,000 and is connected to mainland Spain by ferry ...

On leafing through a Mallorca flora for the first time, the British botanist is relieved that many of the most difficult British genera, such as Carex, Potamogeton, Juncus and Epilobium, have relatively few Mallorcan representatives. Where Mallorca makes up for this is in the Pea family, particularly among the Medicks, which are very plentiful and very hard to tell apart, in Spring at least. They are probably easier when they have some fruit on. Mallorca boasts 15 Medicago species, 17 Trifoliums, and numerous other genera of the same general appearance. Species of the pea or vetch type are also well represented with 25 in total, and there are many thorny bushes to get to grips with. According to Anthony Bonners Plants of the Balearic Islands, the Pea family is the best represented of all families in the Balearics, accounting for 11% of all species found there. I certainly had to leave more plants, actually in flower, unidentified from this family than from any other. In fact probably more ...

The Palmera is an endangered breed of cattle from the island of San Miguel de La Palma, in the Spanish autonomous community of the Canary Islands. The cattle are not indigenous to the island, but were brought by European settlers in the fifteenth century. The Palmera derives from the Rubia Gallega breed of Galicia. It is distributed mostly in the municipalities of Breña Alta, Breña Baja, El Paso, Garafía, Los Llanos de Aridane and Villa de Mazo, with small numbers in the municipalities of Puntagorda, Santa Cruz de La Palma and Tijarafe; a few may be found on the islands of Fuerteventura and Tenerife.:130 The Palmera was brought to La Palma by European settlers in the fifteenth century. It is thought to derive from the Rubia Gallega breed of Galicia, in north-western Spain. It is a triple-purpose breed, well adapted to the mountainous conditions of the island. Following the mechanisation of agriculture in the second half of the twentieth century, demand for draught animals fell sharply; there ...
Large numbers of Basques have left the Basque Country to settle in the rest of Spain, France or other parts of the world in different historical periods, often for economic or political reasons. Historically the Basques abroad were often employed in shepherding and ranching and by maritime fisheries and merchants. Millions of Basque descendants (see Basque American and Basque Canadian) live in North America (the United States; Canada, mainly in the provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec), Latin America (in all 23 countries), South Africa, and Australia.. Miguel de Unamuno said: There are at least two things that clearly can be attributed to Basques: the Society of Jesus and the Republic of Chile.[15] Chilean historian Luis Thayer Ojeda estimated that 45 percent of immigrants to Chile in the 17th and 18th centuries were Basque.[16] Over 2.5 million Basque descendants live in Chile; the Basque have been a major influence in the countrys cultural and economic development.. Introduction. North of Morocco and South of Spain are closely located areas, yet with marked socio-economic and cultural differences. Morocco is undergoing a demographic and social transition. Likewise, life expectancy at birth increased 23 years (from 47 to 70 years) from 1962 to 1999.3 Much less steeply increase has taken place in Spain, where life expectancy increased 6 years (from 73 to 79 years) from 1970 to 1999.4 Nowadays, Moroccan women life expectancy is 74.6 years,5 whereas in Spanish women is 84.7 years.4. Spains powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World War I and II but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986) gave Spain a dynamic and rapidly growing economy and made it a global champion of freedom and human rights. More recently the government has focused on measures to reverse a severe economic recession that began in mid-2008. Austerity measures implemented to reduce a large budget deficit and reassure foreign investors have led to one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe. Spain assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2015-16 term ...

Abstract: The Asian tiger mosquito is an invasive species showing a continuous expansion in the Mediterranean basin in general and in Spain in particular. The first detection of Aedes albopictus in mainland Spain was reported in 2004. Eight years later, in 2012, this mosquito species was detected in the Balearic archipelago, specifically on Majorca. In 2014 it was detected on Eivissa, another island from this archipelago. In this paper we report for the first time the presence of Ae. albopictus on the island of Minorca. Journal of the European Mosquito Control Association 34: 5-9, 2016. ...
Tàpies recovered from his illness and re-emerged on Barcelonas cultural scene. By the end of World War II, Spain was firmly a dictatorship, and the Franco regime took harsh measures against Catalonia and its proud spirit, including repression of its Catalan language. Around 1948 Tàpies became involved in a group of artists and poets in Barcelona who were drawn to the Dada and Surrealist movements. They included poet Joan Brossa, philosopher Arnau Puig, and three other painters, Modest Cuixart, Joan Ponç, and Joan-Josep Tharrats. Calling themselves Dau al Set, or Die at Seven, the group put out a daring avant-garde magazine of the same name, and began showing their work in the city. Tàpiess first exhibition with them, in 1948, included his painting Collage of the Crosses, which provoked controversy among the more conservative elements in Barcelona; Catholic leaders even attempted to have the show shut down by authorities. The crucifix would continue to appear in many works of Tàpiess ...
LEON, Spain (VN) - Colombian sensation Nairo Quintana (Movistar) returned home this week after a wildly successful spring season capped by his overall victory in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco (Tour of the Basque Country).. Plants infected with downy mildew were collected from 1994 to 2000 in sunflower fields in Spain. The race of 102 bulk isolates of Plasmopara halstedii obtained from them was determined by inoculation of sunflower lines traditionally used as differentials for characterization of the pathogen. Nine different races of the fungus were determined. Although race 1 was most common and was the only one found in central Spain, races 4, 6, and 7 were widespread in southern Spain. The results allowed the identification of a new race of the pathogen, race 10, and of a race not previously reported in Europe, race 8. According to the proposal of a new system for characterization of the isolates of P. halstedii in the late 1990s, Coded Virulence Formulae (CVF) were assigned to bulk isolates and single-sporangium (ss) isolates obtained from them. The CVF of the bulk isolates (CVFi) did not always fit with the previous designation. Similarly, ss isolates from the same bulk isolate exhibited different CVF, not ...
The flow of narcotics into Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) has gradually increased throughout the last few years. South American cartels exploit the proximity of the islands to Venezuela (seven miles at its nearest point) to transport cocaine to other Caribbean islands, where it is then moved to North American and European destinations. In 2005, 1.75 tons of pure cocaine, with a street value of TT$700 million (US$112 million) were seized on Monos Island, a few kilometers off the Trinidadian mainland. This drug bust was the largest narcotics seizure in T&T history. Two and half years later, a former Canadian Coast Guard vessel, the Destiny Empress, was seized off the coast of Spain. Spanish National Police, tipped off by Scotland Yard officials, discovered £375 million worth of cocaine destined for the U.K. The Trinidad and Tobago broadcasting channel CNC3 reported that the Destiny Empress spent several days prior to its seizure undergoing repairs in a Trinidadian port, less than a mile from the ...
ARRIBAS-MONZON, Federico et al. Effects of air pollution on daily mortality in Zaragoza, Spain, 1991-1995. Salud pública Méx [online]. 2001, vol.43, n.4, pp.289-297. ISSN 0036-3634.. Objective. To analyze the short-term impact of air pollution on daily mortality in the City of Zaragoza (Spain). Material and methods. This ecologic study was conducted in Zaragoza, Spain, from 1991 to 1993. Poisson autoregressive models were constructed to assess the association between air particulate matter and sulphur dioxide SO2 and daily deaths. Four outcome variables were studied: overall mortality (excluding external deaths), mortality in subjects over 69 years of age, mortality due to respiratory disease, and mortality due to cardiovascular disease. A sample size was not obtained. Data analysis was conducted using the statistical software EGRET and SPSS. Results. SO2 levels were significantly associated with cardiovascular deaths (RR=1.018 IC 95%: 1.001-1.036) and particulate matter levels with ...

Human cancer cell lines and primary tumor samples. The 49 human cancer cell lines examined in this study were obtained from the American Type Culture Collection. The cell lines represented 14 types of malignancy (leukemia, lymphoma, breast, cervix, colon, condrosarcoma, liver, lung, muscle, neuroblastoma, osteosarcoma, prostate, skin, and testis). Cell lines were maintained in appropriate medium and treated with 1 μmol/L 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (Sigma) for 3 d to achieve demethylation. One-hundred six primary hematologic malignancies were obtained from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre Tumour Bank, the University of Navarra, and the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein Campus Kiel. The study was approved by the corresponding institutional review boards.. DNA methylation analysis of the TLE1 gene. We established TLE1 CpG island methylation status by PCR analysis of bisulfite-modified genomic DNA. First, methylation status was analyzed by bisulfite genomic sequencing of both strands ...
Multivariate data analysis methods were applied to study the geographical and temporal distribution of tropospheric ozone in Catalonia (North-East Spain). Ozone data were collected during the period 2000-2004 in 41 sampling stations. Data analysis by multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) allowed the recognition of three sub-regions within Catalonia according to their ozone variation patterns. Representation of loadings by means of geographical information systems (GIS) allowed a better visualisation of these areas. Daily, weekly and annual ozone profiles were determined for each sub-region. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied within each sub-region to unravel the relationship between ozone variation and some other parameters, such as atmospheric pollutants (SO2, H2S, NO, NO2, CO and particulate matter), as well as meteorological variables (temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, pressure, precipitation and wind speed ...
The purpose of this paper is to find the competitiveness of Indonesias biodiesel exports in the Spanish and the European Union (EU) market as a whole using some competitiveness analysis approaches. In addition to knowing the similarities and differences in the results of the methods of analyzing the competitiveness of Indonesian biodiesel in Spain and the EU. The methodology used was comparative advantage analysis, including analysis of RCA, RSCA, and NRCA and market share. The data used are the value of biodiesel and total monthly exports of both Indonesia and other countries to Spain and the EU from January 2012 to January 2019. Through the market share approach, it was known that Indonesias biodiesel market share in the Spanish and EU markets was only 22 percent and 0.04, respectively with an increasing trend in Spain and a decreasing trend in the EU. Each method for measuring competitiveness shows the similarity of results. Indonesias biodiesel had competitiveness, both in Spain and the EU.

Jamie Scott, a Simon Fraser University professor and Canada Research Chair in molecular immunity, and three international collaborators are getting a hefty financial boost in their efforts to develop an effective HIV/AIDS vaccine.. The United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded the four researchers $2.7 million to help them improve the effectiveness of a DNA-based vaccine that Marinieve Montero first conceived of eight years ago. Montero was a student of Scotts whose work was also funded by the NIH, the U.S.s largest government-funded medical research agency.. Scotts current collaborators are at the University of the Basque Country, the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and the University of California, San Francisco.. The researchers will use their new funding to strengthen a vaccine theyve made from a DNA fragment taken from the HIV genome. The fragment encodes something that is highly prized in HIV/AIDS vaccine research. Called the MPER, its a region of ...
