The Spanish National Health System (Spanish: Sistema Nacional de Salud, SNS) is the agglomeration of public health services that has existed in Spain since it was established through and structured by the Ley General de Sanidad (the "General Health Law") of 1986. Management of these services has been progressively transferred to the distinct autonomous communities of Spain, while some continue to be operated by the National Institute of Health Management (Instituto Nacional de Gestión Sanitaria, INGESA), part of the Ministry of Health and Social Policy (which superseded the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs-Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo-in 2009). The activity of these services is harmonized by the Interterritorial Council of the Spanish National Health Service (Consejo Interterritorial del Servicio Nacional de Salud de España, CISNS) in order to give cohesion to the system and to guarantee the rights of citizens throughout Spain. Article 46 of the Ley General de Sanidad establishes the ...

Basque rural sports, known as Herri Kirolak in Basque, are a number of sports competitions rooted in the traditional lifestyles of the Basque people, for example Basque pelota, the Basque version of the European game family that includes real tennis and squash. Basque players, playing for either the Spanish or the French teams, dominate international competitions. The Basque country is also home to former national football champions Athletic Club from Bilbao. It has a strict Cantera policy of employing only players born or trained in the Basque Country (greater region). Athletics policy does not apply to head coaches, with famous names as Howard Kendall and Jupp Heynckes coaching the team at various points. In spite of this, the club shares with worldwide heavyweights Real Madrid and FC Barcelona the distinction of being the only clubs never to have been relegated from the top flight.[24]. Another major Basque Country club is Real Sociedad from San Sebastián, who contest the Basque derby with ...

Data source: Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS) of hospital care episodes. Potential Day Surgery Episode (PDSE) was defined as the hospital episode with a surgical procedure (ICD-9-CM), programmed admission and home discharge. To be considered as PDSE, the selected procedure must appear in at least 50 day-surgery cases and be developed in at least 5 hospitals. The study database included: MBDS of 188 (85%) hospitals in the National Health System and 32 (15%) Spanish private hospitals in the year 2006 with 1,162,082 surgical admissions. From 1,770 procedures identified (ICD-9-MC), 798 fulfilled PDSE criteria that were finally grouped in 204 procedure groups. From the total number of surgical admissions, 931,630 episodes were considered as PDSE and 541,715 were observed as real day-surgery episodes (substitution index of 58.1%). A logistic regression model was applied to estimate the expected number of day-surgery episodes. The dependent variable was day-surgery case (yes/no). ...

VNTR polymorphism of AFLP loci D17S5 and APOB was analyzed in 100 unrelated individuals residing in the Basque Country by PCR amplification and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Population parameters were estimated to validate these loci as routine markers in human identification. Thus, although both loci showed extensive polymorphism (with gene diversities of approximately 80% for both systems) and although concordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and linkage equilibrium was observed, comparisons with other populations displayed significant differences. Moreover, further analysis of neutral parameters limits this validation to Dl 7S5 because APOB displays excesses of both the total number of alleles and the number of rare alleles; possible reasons for this discrepancy (presence of deleterious alleles, bottleneck effect, admixture, complexity of APOB polymorphism) are discussed.
The Basque Country is home to numerous ancient buildings that have been transformed into cultural venues. They are public places dedicated to creation, learning, entertainment... and they invite citizens to participate and interact. This use makes it possible to renovate our important industrial and historical heritage. We shall focus on three buildings found in the Basque capitals: Montehermoso in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Centro Azkuna in Bilbao and Tabakalera in Donostia/San Sebastián. Culture at the service of the people!. MONTEHERMOSO CULTURAL CENTRE. The Montehermoso Cultural Centre is a Renaissance mansion from the sixteenth century located in the highest section of the Old Quarters in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Prior to its current purpose, it had been given several uses; the previous being an episcopal see. After a thorough renovation and expansion of its surface by adding the former Vitoria-Gasteiz Water Holding Tank, it opened in 1997 as a cultural centre.. It now houses exhibition rooms, multi-purpose ...

No previously published research assesses the usefulness of incorporating pharmacy data into prospective risk adjustment techniques in any national health system. To date, research in the European and Spanish contexts has focused on using diagnoses-based risk assessment variables [3, 11]. However, our study, as well as others carried out within the Spanish National Health System [20], determined that the accuracy of the diagnostic codes allocated by primary health care physicians in their computerised medical records could be improved.. The results of this study confirm that much can be learned by looking at pharmacy data, especially when forecasting drug expenditures. Studies carried out in the U.S [21, 22] and Europe [23] have outlined the potential of pharmacy data to improve the system of risk adjustment for both care management program capitation payments and pharmacy budget planning. This is of particular interest in a situation in which the information related to drug consumption is ...

Three of the carriers were also HBeAg/HBV-DNA positive and two were anti-HDV positive. Anti-HBc prevalence was 6.5% in 602 20-40 year old women and 1.6% in 428 girls 10-11 years old...
Until yesterdays rain, Andalusia was blanketed in a haze of pine pollen. Even the bright red roof of the main house was covered with the yellow powder. For those of us who have lived in middle Georgia for a while, the arrival of the pine pollen signals the beginning of long, mild spring days and, for some, sniffles and sneezes. Maybe it has something to do with the wet, cold winter we had, but most locals cant remember the pollen being this heavy. Fortunately, yesterdays rain cleaned the air, slaked parched gardens, and created puddles of yellow pollen on the ground. Today the lines at the local car washes will be pretty long as midstaters rinse the pollen off their vehicles that the rain didnt. After you get your car washed, why not consider decorating it with one of our brand new bumper stickers? These one of a kind items are only $4 each and are available for purchase in the Andalusia gift shop or by phone order ...

THE hardest problem for the authors of Spain s democratic constitution was to strike a balance between the central government and the claims of Catalonia, the Basque country and Galicia for home rule. The formula they came up with was known as café para todos, or coffee for all: Spain was divided into 17 autonomous communities (plus the enclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the Moroccan coast), each with its own elected parliament and government. This estado de las autonomías seemed a neat solution. Over the past 30 years more and more powers and money have been devolved. The regional governments are now responsible for schools, universities, health, social services, culture, urban and rural development and, in some places, policing. But it is becoming clear that even as it has solved some problems, decentralisation has created others ...

To ascertain the prevalence of multiple sclerosis in the region of Osona in Catalonia, northern Spain, an intensive study was undertaken in a small population of 72,000 people over a period of five years, using many sources of information. Patients were classified according to the Poser criteria. Most of the patients presented with mild symptoms only and many had not seen a neurologist or attended a large hospital. The prevalence of definite and probable multiple sclerosis was 58 per 100,000. This is nine to 10 times higher than had been found previously in Catalonia and is a similar prevalence to that found in southern Spain, in Sicily, and in Greek speaking Cyprus.. ...

We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of posaconazole compared with standard azole therapy (SAT; fluconazole or itraconazole) for the prevention of invasive fungal infections (IFI) and the reduction of overall mortality in high-risk neutropenic patients with acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The perspective was that of the Spanish National Health Service (NHS). A decision-analytic model, based on a randomised phase III trial, was used to predict IFI avoided, life-years saved (LYS), total costs, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER; incremental cost per LYS) over patients lifetime horizon. Data for the analyses included life expectancy, procedures, and costs associated with IFI and the drugs (in euros at November 2009 values) which were obtained from the published literature and opinions of an expert committee. A probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PAS) was performed. Posaconazole was associated with fewer IFI (0.05 versus 0.11), increased LYS (2.52 versus 2

Triggering Article 155 would allow Rajoy to suspend Catalonias devolved government and take over control from Madrid.. "This request, before any measure that the government can implement under Article 155 of our Constitution, aims to offer our citizens the clarity and security that such an issue requires", Rajoy said. "Yesterday I tried to send a message of calmness and to remind people that we are facing a political problem that we need to solve with politics and not with police", he said.Hundreds of people were injured in Catalonia on October 1 as Spanish national police sought to prevent the referendum going ahead.. "We have listened to the world, especially Europe, and I think it would be very good if the Spanish Government also was generous and responsible and listened that this is the moment and the opportunity to open a dialogue without conditions". Catalonian President Carles Fulgedemont subsequently hinted he would unveil an American-style declaration of independence, but on Tuesday ...

Our results reflect excess breast cancer mortality in women aged over 49 years in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Valencia. Furthermore, high significant excess risks were observed in municipalities of La Rioja, Navarre, Aragon and Catalonia around the Ebro River. Most provincial capitals in the north and east of Spain displayed increased RR. Lastly, Badajoz, Mérida and Almendralejo in Extremadura, Seville and Alcalá de Guadaira in the Province of Seville, and Puerto Real and Puerto de Santa María in Cadiz registered high, significant RRs. The geographical pattern in younger women appeared to be more uniform and no RR over 1.20 were in evidence. The only exception was Tuineje (Las Palmas). On the Spanish mainland, a group of municipalities with high RRs were located in two Andalusian provinces, Cadiz and Seville, near the Guadalquivir River.. When seeking possible etiological clues, it could be argued that incidence would be more valuable than mortality, given that in ...

Catalonias secessionist leader came under intense pressure on Monday to abandon plans to declare independence from Spain after hundreds of thousands of unionists took to the streets at the weekend to protest against the region breaking away.. Spain fears the Catalan parliament will vote for independence on Tuesday, when Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is due to address the assembly in the wake of a banned Oct. 1 referendum in which Catalan officials say people voted overwhelmingly for secession.. Under Catalonias referendum law, deemed unconstitutional by Madrid, a vote for independence on Tuesday would start a six-month process that would envisage divorce talks with Spain before regional elections and a final act of separation.. The high-resolution seismic stratigraphy of the Galicia Bank Region and adjacent deposits of the neighbouring Iberian and Biscay Abyssal Plains was included as part of the geological studies conducted in the area where the oil-tanker Prestige wreck is located. This seismic stratigraphy is characterized by five seismic units (5 to 1, from oldest to youngest) lying above an irregular acoustic basement defined by a highly fractured system of horsts and grabens. These faulted systems have controlled the local depositional architecture, deforming, fracturing, relocating and distributing sediments since the Valanginian. Three depositional models of facies can be recognized on the Galicia Bank Region and surrounding abyssal plains: bank, escarpment, and abyssal plain facies. The bank facies reflects the depositional evolution from initial filling to obliterating stages of the horsts and grabens. The escarpment facies has a local distribution and represents deposition associated with active slopes of ...
