The Spanish National Health System (Spanish: Sistema Nacional de Salud, SNS) is the agglomeration of public health services that has existed in Spain since it was established through and structured by the Ley General de Sanidad (the General Health Law) of 1986. Management of these services has been progressively transferred to the distinct autonomous communities of Spain, while some continue to be operated by the National Institute of Health Management (Instituto Nacional de Gestión Sanitaria, INGESA), part of the Ministry of Health and Social Policy (which superseded the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs-Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo-in 2009). The activity of these services is harmonized by the Interterritorial Council of the Spanish National Health Service (Consejo Interterritorial del Servicio Nacional de Salud de España, CISNS) in order to give cohesion to the system and to guarantee the rights of citizens throughout Spain. Article 46 of the Ley General de Sanidad establishes the ...

Basque rural sports, known as Herri Kirolak in Basque, are a number of sports competitions rooted in the traditional lifestyles of the Basque people, for example Basque pelota, the Basque version of the European game family that includes real tennis and squash. Basque players, playing for either the Spanish or the French teams, dominate international competitions. The Basque country is also home to former national football champions Athletic Club from Bilbao. It has a strict Cantera policy of employing only players born or trained in the Basque Country (greater region). Athletics policy does not apply to head coaches, with famous names as Howard Kendall and Jupp Heynckes coaching the team at various points. In spite of this, the club shares with worldwide heavyweights Real Madrid and FC Barcelona the distinction of being the only clubs never to have been relegated from the top flight.[24]. Another major Basque Country club is Real Sociedad from San Sebastián, who contest the Basque derby with ...

Data source: Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS) of hospital care episodes. Potential Day Surgery Episode (PDSE) was defined as the hospital episode with a surgical procedure (ICD-9-CM), programmed admission and home discharge. To be considered as PDSE, the selected procedure must appear in at least 50 day-surgery cases and be developed in at least 5 hospitals. The study database included: MBDS of 188 (85%) hospitals in the National Health System and 32 (15%) Spanish private hospitals in the year 2006 with 1,162,082 surgical admissions. From 1,770 procedures identified (ICD-9-MC), 798 fulfilled PDSE criteria that were finally grouped in 204 procedure groups. From the total number of surgical admissions, 931,630 episodes were considered as PDSE and 541,715 were observed as real day-surgery episodes (substitution index of 58.1%). A logistic regression model was applied to estimate the expected number of day-surgery episodes. The dependent variable was day-surgery case (yes/no). ...

VNTR polymorphism of AFLP loci D17S5 and APOB was analyzed in 100 unrelated individuals residing in the Basque Country by PCR amplification and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Population parameters were estimated to validate these loci as routine markers in human identification. Thus, although both loci showed extensive polymorphism (with gene diversities of approximately 80% for both systems) and although concordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and linkage equilibrium was observed, comparisons with other populations displayed significant differences. Moreover, further analysis of neutral parameters limits this validation to Dl 7S5 because APOB displays excesses of both the total number of alleles and the number of rare alleles; possible reasons for this discrepancy (presence of deleterious alleles, bottleneck effect, admixture, complexity of APOB polymorphism) are discussed.

The Basque Country is home to numerous ancient buildings that have been transformed into cultural venues. They are public places dedicated to creation, learning, entertainment... and they invite citizens to participate and interact. This use makes it possible to renovate our important industrial and historical heritage. We shall focus on three buildings found in the Basque capitals: Montehermoso in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Centro Azkuna in Bilbao and Tabakalera in Donostia/San Sebastián. Culture at the service of the people!. MONTEHERMOSO CULTURAL CENTRE. The Montehermoso Cultural Centre is a Renaissance mansion from the sixteenth century located in the highest section of the Old Quarters in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Prior to its current purpose, it had been given several uses; the previous being an episcopal see. After a thorough renovation and expansion of its surface by adding the former Vitoria-Gasteiz Water Holding Tank, it opened in 1997 as a cultural centre.. It now houses exhibition rooms, multi-purpose ...

In Spain, abortion is only legal in case the pregnancy poses a threat to the physical or mental health of the woman, or in case of rape or fetal malformations. Every year approximately 100.000 abortions take place in Spain, once a psychiatrist has determined that the womans mental health is endangered.. There is a great lack of clarity about the Spanish abortion law. This recently led to the prosecutions of Spanish abortion doctors, the closure of abortion clinics and the investigation of Spanish women who had an abortions. Also, a Dutch woman from Boxtel, who had a late abortion in Spain in 2007, is still under investigation in the Netherlands.. The Spanish government has now appointed a committee to recommend changes to the abortion law.. By inviting of the Women on Waves ship, the Spanish organizations want to urge the Spanish government to:. - Remove abortion from the penal code. Abortion is a regular medical procedure. - Stop the criminalization of women and doctors.. - Full financial ...
No previously published research assesses the usefulness of incorporating pharmacy data into prospective risk adjustment techniques in any national health system. To date, research in the European and Spanish contexts has focused on using diagnoses-based risk assessment variables [3, 11]. However, our study, as well as others carried out within the Spanish National Health System [20], determined that the accuracy of the diagnostic codes allocated by primary health care physicians in their computerised medical records could be improved.. The results of this study confirm that much can be learned by looking at pharmacy data, especially when forecasting drug expenditures. Studies carried out in the U.S [21, 22] and Europe [23] have outlined the potential of pharmacy data to improve the system of risk adjustment for both care management program capitation payments and pharmacy budget planning. This is of particular interest in a situation in which the information related to drug consumption is ...

I recent red a paper on the possibility of Cantabria, Northern Spain being the birthplace of mtDNA haplogroup V around the LGM. If this is the case it makes sense to say that the paintings of many Cantabria Caves (e.g. Altamira, El Castillo, etc) were the main work of haplogroup V and probably H1 and H3. This makes sense as my birthplace and maternial leneage are from Tras-os-Montes, a province in NE Portugal that borders the Spanish provinces of Galicia and Leon. It is only a few hours from

Until yesterdays rain, Andalusia was blanketed in a haze of pine pollen. Even the bright red roof of the main house was covered with the yellow powder. For those of us who have lived in middle Georgia for a while, the arrival of the pine pollen signals the beginning of long, mild spring days and, for some, sniffles and sneezes. Maybe it has something to do with the wet, cold winter we had, but most locals cant remember the pollen being this heavy. Fortunately, yesterdays rain cleaned the air, slaked parched gardens, and created puddles of yellow pollen on the ground. Today the lines at the local car washes will be pretty long as midstaters rinse the pollen off their vehicles that the rain didnt. After you get your car washed, why not consider decorating it with one of our brand new bumper stickers? These one of a kind items are only $4 each and are available for purchase in the Andalusia gift shop or by phone order ...

THE hardest problem for the authors of Spain s democratic constitution was to strike a balance between the central government and the claims of Catalonia, the Basque country and Galicia for home rule. The formula they came up with was known as café para todos, or coffee for all: Spain was divided into 17 autonomous communities (plus the enclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the Moroccan coast), each with its own elected parliament and government. This estado de las autonomías seemed a neat solution. Over the past 30 years more and more powers and money have been devolved. The regional governments are now responsible for schools, universities, health, social services, culture, urban and rural development and, in some places, policing. But it is becoming clear that even as it has solved some problems, decentralisation has created others ...

Gac Sanit [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.1, pp.9-15. ISSN 0213-9111.. Objective: Catalonia and the Basque Country received substantial immigration quotas from the rest of Spain during the twentieth century. This study aimed to analyze inequalities in health by birthplace (the population born in the same region or other autonomous regions) in these two geographical areas. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the non-institutionalized population aged 50 to 79 years, with data from the health surveys of Catalonia 2006 (n=5,483) and the Basque Country 2007 (n=3,424). We used log-binomial models to estimate the prevalence ratios (PR) of poor self-rated health by birthplace, stratified by sex and social class, and successively adjusted for age, social class and educational attainment. Results: Immigrants from other ...

Bacterial canker of kiwifruit, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), is a disease that is spreading rapidly in several kiwifruit-producing countries, causing significant economic losses. In 2011, it was detected for the first time in Spain, in the south of Galicia (northwest Spain). Kiwifruit orchards were therefore inspected and sampled in 2011 and 2012 to determine the pathogen distribution, and the isolates obtained were characterized by morphology, fatty acids profile, biochemical tests and molecular techniques. Isolates were obtained from Actinidia deliciosa 'Hayward' (from leaves, canes, flower buds, fruits and roots), from A.deliciosa 'Summer', from Actinidia chinensis 'Jin Tao' (from canes and leaves) and from A.chinensis pollinator 'Belen' (from canes). Results of the analysis of the cfl gene (phytotoxin production-related), the tox-argK gene cluster and phylogenetic analysis of the cts gene demonstrated that all Psa isolates from northwest ...
Background: Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) is the leading cause of late nonrelapse mortality (transplant-related mortality) after hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Given that there are a wide range of treatment options for cGvHD, assessment of the associated costs and efficacy can help clinicians and health care providers allocate health care resources more efficiently. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) compared with rituximab (Rmb) and with imatinib (Imt) in patients with cGvHD at 5 years from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System. Methods: The model assessed the incremental cost-effectiveness/utility ratio of ECP versus Rmb or Imt for 1000 hypothetical patients by using microsimulation cost-effectiveness techniques. Model probabilities were obtained from the literature. Treatment pathways and adverse events were evaluated taking clinical opinion and published reports into consideration. ...
Perhaps nothing captures how far off the rails we have reached in Catalonia than the divergent treatment given to two people before the referendum, Arnaldo Otegi, a condemned former member of the Basque terrorist group ETA, who continues to press for an independent Basque Country, and Joan Manuel Serrat, the Catalan singer-songwriter, an iconic figure censored by the Franco regime. While Otegi was guest of honour at the Catalan national day, Serrat was labelled a traitor and fascist for questioning the referendum. How did we get here? Very simplistically, the turning point came in 2010 when the Constitutional Court in Madrid ruled there was no legal basis to recognise Catalonia as a nation and that the Catalan language should not take precedence over Castilian Spanish, among other things. This followed a challenge by the Popular Party, then in the opposition, to the new Catalan autonomy statute that was approved in 2006 in a referendum in the region and ratified in the Congress and Senate in ...

A study coordinated by the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country did not detect any increase in antimicrobial susceptibility after applying a selective digestive decontamination (SDD) protocol. The research, conducted in collaboration with the Microbiology Service and the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Álava (Basque Country), where a selective digestive decontamination (SDD) protocol was implemented in 2002, did not find any increase in the acquisition rate of antibiotic resistance and found that the rate was no higher than that of Spanish intensive care units without the protocol.. The study was coordinated by researcher Alicia Rodríguez-Gascón of the UPV/EHUs Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology Laboratory, and set out to compare the rates of antimicrobial susceptibility at the intensive care unit (ICU) before and after the introduction of SDD and compare them with data on susceptibility of other Spanish ICUs without SDD. The research, titled Antibiotic ...
In the literature, data on the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in men vary significantly and the exact distribution of specific genotypes is still unclear. As infections usually occur without symptoms, men might only attend their hospital clinic when they have a specific concern, being in most cases genital warts (condylomas), which are often caused by low-risk HPV genotypes. The aim of this study was to assess HPV genotype distribution and prevalence among men attending hospital for HPV-associated conditions and to evaluate infection-associated factors. Samples from men with clinical manifestations of HPV-related infections seen during 2007-2012 at the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Control Department at Basurto University Hospital were genotyped using Linear Array HPV Genotyping Test kit (Roche Molecular Diagnostics, Germany). Data on probable risk factors were collected and investigated for possible association. Of 184 anogenital samples, 138 (75 %) were tested as positive

Andalusia sits at a latitude between 36º and 38º44 N, in the warm-temperate region. In general, it experiences a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers influenced by the Azores High, but subject to occasional torrential rains and extremely hot temperatures.[19][20] In the winter, the tropical anticyclones move south, allowing cold polar fronts to penetrate the region. Still, within Andalusia there is considerable climatic variety. From the extensive coastal plains one may pass to the valley of the Guadalquivir, barely above sea level, then to the highest altitudes in the Iberian peninsula in the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. In a mere 50 kilometres (31 mi) one can pass from the subtropical coast of the province of Granada to the snowy peaks of Mulhacén. Andalusia also includes both the dry Tabernas Desert in the province of Almería and the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in the province of Cádiz, which experiences Spains greatest rainfall.[21][22][23][24]. Not using effective contraception once becoming sexually active multiplies up to 6 times the risk for teen pregnancy. The effective use of contraception once becoming sexually active is the best way to avoid unwanted pregnancy during adolescence. This is just one of the conclusions of a study by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense in Madrid which additionally reveals that using no contraception or using it well after starting sexual relations increases up to six times the risk for teen pregnancy. In addition, the use of ineffective contraception (methods other than condoms, intrauterine contraceptive device [IUDs], diaphragms, or hormonal methods) quadrupled the risk.. These two conclusions are reflected in the study Teenage motherhood in Spain, led by CSIC researcher Margarita Delgado. Research was based on a survey conducted by the spanish Sociological Research Center on 9,700 women over the age of fifteen and even covered generations of women born ...
This work has been developed in the context of a region with a recent industry of seaweeds for human consumption. It is well known that algae are one of the organisms containing the highest concentrations of iodine (I), an essential trace element for humans. Nevertheless there is still a lack of information about the nature of the iodinated compounds present in algae and on their bioavailability. The main objectives of this PhD thesis were to study in depth the I content from edible seaweeds harvested in Galicia (northwestern Spain), the chemical nature of the iodinated species and its bioavailability in human beings ...

Scientific evidence suggests that lung cancer (LC) in never-smokers is a different molecular entity to LC in smokers.1,2 The Lung Cancer Risk in Never-Smokers (LCRINS) study, a multicenter case control study competitively funded by the Government of Galicia, began in January 2011. Ten hospitals participated in 3 autonomous communities (Galicia, Asturias, and Madrid). The aim of the study was to determine LC risk factors in never-smokers, looking particularly at residential radon, and the initial results were published in Archivos de Bronconeumología in 2012.3. Six years later, this study has recruited more than 400 cases of LC in never-smokers with an equal number of controls, making it an important source of epidemiological data in this subgroup of LC cases. Moreover, the study provides a model that might serve as a basis for other multicenter studies, a highly desirable design in the investigation of rare diseases. The main findings of the LCRINS study, focusing primarily on residential ...
