Background and Objectives: Data on associations between soy food intake after cancer diagnosis with breast cancer survival are conflicting, so we conducted this meta-analysis for more accurate evaluation. Methods: Comprehensive searches were conducted to find cohort studies of the relationship between soy food intake after cancer diagnosis and breast cancer survival. Data were analyzed with comprehensive meta-analysis software. Results: Five cohort studies (11,206 patients) were included. Pooling all comparisons, soy food intake after diagnosis was associated with reduced mortality (HR 0.85, 95%CI 0.77 0.93) and recurrence (HR 0.79, 95%CI 0.72 0.87). Pooling the comparisons of highest vs. lowest dose, soy food intake after diagnosis was again associated with reduced mortality (HR 0.84, 95%CI 0.71 0.99) and recurrence (HR 0.74, 95%CI 0.64 0.85). Subgroup analysis of ER status showed that soy food intake was associated with reduced mortality in both ER negative (highest vs. lowest: HR 0.75, 95%CI 0.64
In our study, we found that the intake of isoflavones, miso soup, and soy food was not clearly associated with overall colorectal cancer in either men or women. However, the risk of proximal colon cancer in men decreased with increasing consumption of isoflavones, miso soup, and soy food. In contrast, we found no association for distal colon or rectal cancer in men or women. To our knowledge, this is the first cohort study to investigate the association between a large variety of dietary soy foods and isoflavone intake and the risk of colorectal cancer, including anatomic subsites in a general population. These findings suggest that the intake of isoflavones, miso soup, and soy food may not be associated with the risk of colorectal cancer in Japanese men and women.. These epidemiologic findings for dietary soy and isoflavone intake and colorectal cancer risk are partially consistent with the results of a previous cohort study (14) in women, four case-control studies in men and women combined (9, ...
Our meta- analysis showed that soy food intake might be associated with better survival, especially for ER negative, ER+/ PR+, and postmenopausal patients.
Among U.S. women soy food consumption is associated with reduction in menopausal vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes, finds study.
According to the study of Nutritional aspects of second generation soy foods by Alezandro MR, Granato D, Lajolo FM, Genovese MI. , posted in US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, researchers found that the soy-based foods do not present a significant content of isoflavones when compared with the grain, and their in vitro antioxidant capacity is not related with these compounds but rather to the presence of other phenolics and synthetic antioxidants, such as sodium erythorbate. However, they may represent alternative sources and provide soy protein, isoflavones, and vegetable fat for those who are not ready to eat traditional soy foods ...

Context Soy foods are rich in isoflavones, a major group of phytoestrogens that have been hypothesized to reduce the risk of breast cancer. However, the estrogen-like effect of isoflavones and the potential interaction between isoflavones and tamoxifen have led to concern about soy food consumption among breast cancer patients.. Objective To evaluate the association of soy food intake after diagnosis of breast cancer with total mortality and cancer recurrence.. Design, Setting, and Participants The Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study, a large, population-based cohort study of 5042 female breast cancer survivors in China. Meju, a fermented soybean paste, is used as a starter for the preparation of different Korean traditional soybean foods. The traditional meju facilitate fermentation in the presence of the natural microbiome. In this study, we performed Illumina-MiSeq paired-end sequencing for microbial communities and mass spectrometry analysis for metabolite profiling to investigate the differences between 11 traditional meju, produced in different regions of Korea. Even though the bacterial and fungal communities showed remarkable variety, major genera, such as Bacillus, Enterococcus, Variovorax, Pediococcus, Weissella, and Aspergillus, were detected in all meju. The metabolite profile patterns of the 11 samples were clustered into two main groups: group I (M1-5) and group II (M6-11). The metabolite analysis indicated a relatively higher amino acid content in group I, while group II exhibited higher isoflavone, soyasaponin, and lysophospholipid contents. The bioactivity analysis proved that the ABTS ...

Nagatani-en (永谷園) have released their first range of function orientated miso soups. A number of makers have been selling miso soup products with vitamins included, but Nagatani-en claim they are the first to successfully mix the amino acid ornithine (オルニチン). In food groups, ornithine is most commonly found in Shijimi (シジミ) and so not surprisingly the miso soup made by Nagatani-en has plenty of Shijimi, as well as a dash of negi (ネギ).. The packaging states that each cup contains 70 times the power of shijimi, in the form of ornithine. The miso soup is said to be good for hangovers and the packaging specifically shows a beer glass with the words For people who like their drink.. Shijimi has long been known by Japanese to assist the bodies natural recovery process and to aid with hangovers. The website WhatJapanThinks covered this in a survey some time ago ...

The science of large numbers pg. 5. The Shanghai Womens Study has already begun to shed light on a number of areas.. Among the findings: Women who are non-smokers but who are exposed to the cigarette smoking of their husbands have an increased risk of dying of stroke, Zheng says. We also learned that soy food intake reduces the risk of fractures, hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes.. Simply adopting Asian eating habits may not yield the same benefits in the United States, Shu cautions.. Even though lots of people in the South eat rice and greens, as do people in Shanghai, the specific type of vegetables and the way the food is prepared is very different, she says.. In addition, the ways soy foods are consumed in the U.S. are quite different from how they are consumed in China, Shu adds. For example, many soy products in the U.S. contain a large amount of sugar, while most soy products are consumed in China without the addition of any sugar.. As for the Shanghai Mens ...

The secret to crispy, delicious tofu is simple. 1.) use extra firm tofu. and 2.) get as much water out of the tofu as possible. Drying out the tofu allows for a better sear on the outside of the tofu. Im a texture girl, so ill do whatever it takes to make perfect tofu stir fry. Recently I splurged for a tofu press (aka the best invention ever) to get the water out of tofu. But before the tofu press, I used a couple of tea towels, two plates, and the largest cans in my pantry to squeeze the water out. The tofu press definitely makes it easier but you dont necessarily need it.. After the tofu has most of the water pressed out, I cut it into small pieces and then pop it into a baggy and toss it with corn starch, and a little salt and pepper. Sometimes I add in a pinch or two of chili powder to help give the tofu a more caramelized color when its pan fried. This is entirely aesthetic and not necessary! The peanut tofu stir fry gets extra crispy and delicious because 1.) squeezing the water out ...
Isoflavones belong to the flavonoid or bioflavonoid family of chemicals, and are considered endocrine disruptors -- plants or other products that act as hormones, disrupting the endocrine system, and in some cases, this disruption involves acting as an anti-thyroid agent. 26 Oct 2017. NUS food scientists have given okara, a soybean byproduct, a nutritional and flavour makeover using various enzymes and beneficial microbes.. One way to avoid food wastage is to finish all the food served, but how about food that does not make it to the dining table?. An example of this is okara, the soybean residue that remains after the production of soymilk and tofu. About 10,000 tonnes of okara are produced annually in Singapore as a byproduct. Okara spoils easily, has an unpleasant smell and is not palatable, so most soy food producers usually dispose it. This creates food waste. With the aim of reducing food wastage, Prof LIU Shao Quan and his research team from the Food Science and Technology Programme at the Department of Chemistry, NUS have developed a biotransformation process for okara using a combination of natural microorganisms and enzymes to convert it into a high-value food ingredient with better nutritional value and enhanced flavour. After this transformation, the ...

People who are vegetarian or want to eat less meat always ask me how to cook tofu to make it taste less… well, like tofu. Heres my answer: I dont really eat tofu all that much; tempeh has a much more natural taste and texture to it and the process for making it is a little less sketchy. The second part to the answer is this recipe. Sometimes I eat tempeh plain because it tastes fine on its own to me, but when I do cook it I use this sauce. Its only 2 ingredients and incredibly easy to make; its a great one for beginner cooks who arent looking to tackle long ingredient lists for flavorful food.. This dish is also really easy to make gluten-free. Just make sure to use wheat-free soy sauce and that the tempeh doesnt have any grains fermented in it; the ingredients should just be soy beans, vinegar, and salt.. Maple Soy Tempeh. University of Washington doctors determined that high soy consumption has no effect on women getting breast cancer for the first time, and, even more, discovered that women who eat a lot of soyfoods have reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence.. Soyfoods have demonstrated anti-cancer properties such as regulating cell growth and programming the death of mutated cells. Researchers from Vanderbilt University studied genes and RNA fragments in tumor tissue of patients with triple-negative breast cancer, and found that eating soyfoods during the year prior to cancer diagnosis led to more expression of the genes that suppress tumor growth and less expression of genes that can cause cancerous mutations. The people who were found to have this protective affect averaged 12 grams of soy protein per day, which is about two servings.. These findings support the growing body of evidence that shows long-term soy intake protects against many forms of cancer and promotes health at all stages of life. A study ...

Ooh, aah… Yep, it pretty much just looks like soy(less) sauce.. Im sure God made soy for a good reason, but currently, when soy has taken the form of a ninja, sneaking into our food in disguise while were not looking, and GMO soy is becoming more and more common, and an overabundance of soy in our diets is being blamed for all kinds of hormone imbalances, Id really prefer not to intentionally sprinkle even more soy on my food as flavoring.. This is problem if you really like Chinese food, which we do, and even more of a problem if youre trying to make your own Chinese food at home, which is pretty much just how I operate. If I like it, sooner or later I have to try to make it myself, and probably add more garlic because then it will be even better!. Enter this recipe. No soy, mostly basic ingredients (at least, after I tweaked it to ingredients I have around, as I always do with recipes I come across), and if not identical in flavor to soy sauce, does still provide a similar flavor base to ...

3½ tablespoons brown sugar. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in skillet over medium heat. Add tempeh, and sauté 5 minutes, or until browned. Stir in tamari and 1/3 cup water. Simmer 5 minutes, or until liquid has absorbed, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside. Heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add apples and onion, and sauté about 10 minutes. Stir in cabbage, cider, vinegar, and brown sugar. Reduce heat to medium, and partially cover skillet. Cook about 30 minutes, or until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper, stir in tempeh, and heat through.. Tempeh is a cultured (fermented) food and this makes it easier to digest. The fermentation process eliminates the substance in the beans that cause gas and indigestion (oligosaccharides) and it also gets rid of some questionable inhibitors (trypsin inhibitors and phytates) that are part of soy. It adds some important vitamins as well. Unlike tofu, tempeh is a whole food; ...
If that were the only published clinical study to test the soy-breast cancer hypothesis, I and other experts would be very cautious about making definitive statements. However, at least four more clinical studies have been published since then, both in Chinese and American populations. The studies have either shown no significant effect of soy on breast cancer recurrence or a protective effect. None of them have shown any detrimental effects of soy consumption by breast cancer survivors.. A meta-analysis of all 5 studies was published earlier this year (Chi et al, Asian Pac J Cancer Prev., 14: 2407-2412, 2013). This study combined the data from 11,206 breast cancer survivors in the US and China. Those with the highest soy consumption had a 23% decrease in recurrence and a 15% decrease in mortality from breast cancer.. The Bottom Line:. What does this mean for you if you are a breast cancer survivor?. 1) There are many reasons to include soy protein foods as part of a healthy diet. Soy foods are ...

Ive always been curious to try tempeh, and what better chance to do just that than for one of my Meatless Monday recipes? Im a fan of tofu, as long as its been marinated in something that has flavour, to make up for its blandness. But I have never tried tempeh, which is fermented soy bean patties. The fermentation gives it a savoury taste, and on top of that tempeh is a nutritional powerhouse: its a great source of protein, vitamins and fibre, but is low in fat and sodium. You can find it in large grocery stores and health food stores. Heres an idea I came up with for preparing it as a healthy, delicious dinner for two:. Tempeh Kebabs ...

Most traditional soy products, such as soymilk, tofu, miso, and tempeh, are rich sources of isoflavones (providing about 30 to 40 milligrams per serving). But not all soy products are created equal: The way each soy product is prepared will affect soy isoflavone content accordingly. While the amount of soy required to exert health benefits has not yet been determined, it is clear that the health benefits associated with this versatile food may prove to be significant. Products derived from soybeans are varied in form, taste and texture, and include miso, soymilk, tempeh, tofu, soy sauce, soy cheese, soy flakes, soy grits, soy flour, texturized vegetable protein, among others. The bottom line?. The authors concluded, Soy isoflavones had an effect of lowering blood pressure in hypertensive subjects, but not in normotensive subjects.. By comparison, regular aerobic exercise, weight loss of 3% to 9% of body weight, reduced dietary salt, the DASH diet, and moderation of alcohol intake are all lifestyle interventions that lower blood pressure from 3 to 11 mmHg systolic and 2.5 to 5.5 mmHg diastolic, depending on the lifestyle change selected.. JUDGE GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO SOY LAWSUIT. WASHINGTON, DC. October 25, 2011. Honorable Judge Harold Baker of the United States District Court for the central district of Illinois has ruled that litigation challenging the use of soy foods in Illinois prisons will go forward. In his September 9, 2011 ruling, Judge Baker denied motions by the State and Wexford Health Sources for a summary judgment in their favor, thus bringing the case closer to trial. The ruling emphasized the importance of scientific and medical testimony at the trial.. The trials six plaintiffs are represented by the Weston A. Price Foundation, a leading voice on the dangers of soy foods, especially when consumed in large amounts. Involved in this suit since June 2009, the Foundation is seeking an injunction against serving soy-laden meals to Illinois prisoners. The lawsuit claims that feeding of soy-laden food constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the eighth amendment to the Constitution, as well as a denial of ...

Potato and wakame seaweed is a classic combination, but one that you rarely if ever see on a restaurant menu. I think the reason for this is that restaurants generally cook a huge pot of miso soup in advance, and if you keep simmering potato, it will just fall apart. In any case potato-wakame is one of my favorite miso soups, and depending on the amount of potato you put in, it can be quite filling. I really like it for breakfast, sometimes just on its own.. Wakame is a very versatile seaweed that can be used in salads or soups.Youll see it often as a garnish for sashimi. Its sold in two forms - preserved in salt, or dehydrated. For occasional use, I would recommend dehydrated wakame (often labeled fueru wakame), which is a lot easier to use than the salted kind. Just be careful not to use too much - a little really goes a long way.. Note: if you happen to have some wakame garnish from a takeout sashimi, you can use that for the soup provided that it hasnt been sitting next to raw fish for an ...

This is an article written for the Food Empowerment Projects Food Chain newsletter Issue #11 (not yet published).. Soybeans and their products are often common ingredients in plant-based diets. Soyfoods include edamame, tofu, tempeh, soymilk, soy meats, soy ice cream, soy-based mayonnaise, miso, soy sauce, and many others. Soy is also one of the richest sources of protein in the plant kingdom. Because soy is so common, people with soy allergies sometimes wonder how they can possibly be vegan. A true soy allergy can result in hives, itching, swelling, wheezing, and digestive upset. In very rare cases, a soy allergy can be life threatening and require immediate medical attention. Soy allergies occur in 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 people. Soy allergies are often developed in infancy and many children grow out of the allergy as they age. In comparison to other typical food allergies, soy allergies tend to be slightly less prevalent and also less intense (on average).. If you think you might have a ...

Ive been asked a lot lately about concerns such as yours. It is true that soy contains a mix of phytoestrogens -- plant estrogens -- some of which may stimulate proliferation of cells with estrogen receptors, while others inhibit it. High levels of isoflavones, the phytoestrogenic components of soy, theoretically could stimulate the growth of breast cancer and promote such estrogen-dependent conditions as benign fibroid tumors of the uterus and endometriosis.. I believe that physicians who advise women to avoid soy because of these theoretical concerns misunderstand the complexity of natural products. Just because soy contains stimulating phytoestrogens does not mean that the effect of whole soy foods is stimulating to estrogen-sensitive cells. In fact, the epidemiological evidence -- that is, the evidence of incidence of diseases in different populations -- strongly suggests that soy protects women from estrogen-dependent problems.. Actually, soys estrogenic effect is weak compared to the ...
In the study of Isoflavone intake and risk of lung cancer: a prospective cohort study in Japanby Shimazu T, Inoue M, Sasazuki S, Iwasaki M, Sawada N, Yamaji T, Tsugane S; Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study Group., posted in US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, researchers found that During 11 y (671,864 person-years) of follow-up, we documented 481 male and 178 female lung cancer cases. In men we found an inverse association between isoflavone intake and risk of lung cancer in never smokers (n = 13,051; multivariate HR in the highest compared with the lowest quartile of isoflavone intake: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.21, 0.90; P for trend = 0.024) but not in current or past smokers. A similar, nonsignificant inverse association was seen in never-smoking women (n = 38,211; HR: 0.67; 95% CI: 0.41, 1.10; P for trend = 0.135). We also tested effect modification by smoking status (P for interaction = 0.085 in men and 0.055 in men and women combined) and concluded that ...
Soy isoflavones are diphenolic compounds that are frequently used for alternative treatment of ageing symptoms in both genders. They operate at principally two hierarchical levels of functional organization - cellular and molecular, while these types of action appear to have indefinite borders. Soy isoflavone action at the cellular level involves inter alia the effects on cell mechanics. This epigenetic and modular determinant of cell function and fate is defined by: the anchorage to extracellular matrix (ECM) and neighboring cells, cytoskeleton organization, membrane tension and vesicle trafficking. Soy isoflavones have been reported to: (i) generally fashion an inert cell phenotype in some cancers and enhance the cell anchorage in connective tissues, via the effects on ECM proteins, focal adhesion kinases-mediated events and matrix metalloproteinases inhibition; (ii) affect cytoskeleton integrity, the effects being related to Ca(2+) ions fluxes and involving cell retraction or ...

After following 5,855 Japanese American men for over 20 years, we found no discernible association between tofu intake and prostate cancer risk. The highest group of tofu consumers had a RR of 0.80 for prostate cancer compared with the lowest group, but the inverse relation was not statistically significant. When the analysis was limited to the clinical cases, the RR was 0.85 in the highest intake group. Further restriction of the analysis to the metastatic cases did not provide any evidence of a protective effect of tofu against prostate cancer progression.. There are several limitations in our prospective study. The tofu data were based on just two questions (i.e., frequency of tofu intake during the past week and the average serving size). The original dietary questionnaire in 1971 was limited to 32 other foods and was not designed to explore isoflavone intake in depth. Thus, the consumption of other sources of soy foods, such as soybean milk, cooked soybeans, fermented soybeans, and fried ...
