When we see records being broken and unprecedented events such as this, the onus is on those who deny any connection to climate change to prove their case. Global warming has fundamentally altered the background conditions that give rise to all weather. In the strictest sense, all weather is now connected to climate change. Kevin Trenberth. The study of disease differences between ethnic and racial groups is complicated by the genetic, environmental, and cultural heterogeneity within each group. Despite these complications, the study of well-defined groups of people can yield medical information useful to improve health in these groups. For example, moyamoya disease has a predilection for Japanese people, the incidence of stroke is higher in blacks than in whites,1 and occlusive cerebrovascular lesions are more likely to be intracranial in blacks than whites.2 3 4 This information can be used to optimize risk factor screening and management, acute stroke treatment, and secondary stroke prevention in the various ethnic and racial groups.. Relatively little is known about cerebrovascular disease in Hispanics and Native Americans in the southwestern United States. Hispanics constitute ≈9.0% of the US population according to the 1990 US census, and a large majority of them live in the southwestern United States. The ancestors of the ...

The Rio Grande Valley is known as one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the country. Currently there are over 1,000 documented plant species in this area. Quinta Mazatlan has a small remnant of the South Texas vegetation that once covered the Rio Grande Valley. The plants are well adapted to a hot, semi-arid climate. Most of the plants have thorns for protection. So we fondly call our natural habitat a "Thornforest".. Thornforests occur mostly in somewhat dry, subtropical parts of the world. They are composed mostly of thorny shrubs and small trees. Thornforests often occur as impenetrable thickets. They cover a large area in southwestern North America, southwestern Africa, and also occur in South America, Australia, and other parts of Africa. Many names have been used regarding our Thornforest including Brush Country (El Monte), Brushlands, Thorn Scrub and Thorn Woodland.. Native Plants of South Texas. TREES. ...

With the United States dependence on foreign oil imports, new renewable sources of fuel compatible with combustion engines must be found. A source of this new biofuel could be the jojoba plant which is native to the desert Southwest. This is a plant which grows on non-arable desert lands which do not presently support food production in the United States. The use of this feedstock as a fuel would not impact food prices or production in the United States. In addition, the success of this project would support the growth of a new agricultural industry in the poorer sections of the desert Southwestern United States while decreasing U.S. dependence on foreign oil imports. Before this can be done, the ability of the new biofuel to replace diesel fuel will have to be done which is the objective of this project ...
The Gray Vireo is a scrub-foraging inhabitant of some of the hottest, most arid regions of the southwestern United States and adjacent parts of northwestern Mexico (Figure 1). Well camouflaged by its drab gray plumage, this vireos harsh, three- to four-note song is often the only indication of its presence. Once found, a silent individual may be difficult to distinguish from sympatric gray-colored gnatcatchers (Polioptila spp.), Bushtit (Psaltriparus minimus), Oak Titmouse (Baeolophus inornatus), and Juniper Titmouse (B. ridgwayi) in both summer and winter ranges. Estimation of population numbers and trends for this easily overlooked bird are difficult, and further complicated by its preference for inhospitable and often remote climes.. The first known specimen of the Gray Vireo was taken on 24 May 1865, by Elliott Coues at Fort Whipple (now Prescott), Arizona Territory ( Coues, E. 1866. List of the birds of Fort Whipple, Arizona. Globe mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua) varies in color from white to pink, lavender, rose, apricot and fuchsia. They bloom after seasonal rains. Fine light hairs cover the globe mallows leaves. These help to shade the leaves and to slow down the loss of moisture from the surface of the leaf through transpiration. Closely related to hollyhock, hibiscus and cotton, globe mallows grow on dry, rocky slopes and canyons throughout southwestern United States and Mexico.. ...

Verification of data has become a routine part of every financial aid office. Whether 100% of the financial aid recipients need to have their application data verified and which items need to be verified continues to be a source of intense review and discussion in the profession. The answers to these questions may be found to be validly different for different institutions. The U.S. Department of Educations Quality Control Project is attempting to ascertain the value of the verification effort, whether the verification of certain data items is worth the effort required, and whether special considerations may be appropriate for certain kinds of institutions. A summary opinion of one institutions several years experience with the Quality Control project is outlined in this article.

The bottom chamber is filled with triple layers where possible and the tray itself uses double layers. There is a common opinion that the middle fan is useless, what they did not think about is why. The actual reason is that the gaps at the four corners of the separators have gaps that allow air to be recycled from the PSU chamber into the HD chamber. By using an wide I shaped piece of triple layer the fan can now properly work as intended which is pulling air into HD chamber from the front filter. In practice with the S-FLEX at 480 rpm it reduces the PSU chamber temp by at least 5 degrees. This also have the advantage of having the fan absorbed by the inside of the case instead of near the front which makesthe fan noise harder to block ...

Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are at higher risk (incidence 0.04%-3.5%) of developing nocardiosis. Rate of nocardiosis in the Southwestern US may be high due to environmental factors. Methods: We performed a retrospective review study on 54 SOT patients diagnosed with Nocardia between 1997 and 2016 at our center. To explore the association of various risk factors with both the development of disseminated disease and mortality, a series of Fishers exact tests was used. Findings: ...

A similar analysis among just Mexican-born pulmonary TB patients and their geographic location within the United States (i.e., border state vs. nonborder state) revealed that geographic location was not an independent risk factor for MDR or INH-resistant TB. However, among Mexican-born TB patients, being unemployed in the two years prior to diagnosis (odds ratio (OR) = 1.9; 95% CI, 1.3 2.7) and reported excess alcohol use in the past year (OR = 0.45; 95% CI, 0.27 0.76) were associated (positively and negatively, respectively) with MDR TB, controlling for geographic location, history of previous TB, age, sex, and cavitary disease. Further, being HIV-positive was significantly negatively associated with INH resistance (OR = 0.52; 95% CI, 0.35 0.75), controlling for geographic location, history of previous TB, age, sex, cavitary disease, and smear-positivity.. In 1999 the proportion of Mexican-born border TB patients (84.0%) who received at least some anti-TB treatment using directly observed ...

The monotypic genus Anemopsis has only one species, Anemopsis californica, with the common names yerba mansa or lizard tail. It is a perennial herb in the lizard tail family (Saururaceae) and prefers very wet soil or shallow water. It is native to southwestern North America in northwest Mexico and the Southwestern United States from California to Oklahoma and Texas to Kansas to Oregon. As it matures, the visible part of the plant develops red stains, eventually turning bright red in the fall. Yerba mansa is showy in spring when in bloom. The iconic white "flowers" (actually reduced inflorescences, or pseudanthia) are borne in early spring, and are surrounded by 4-9 large white bracts. Similar to the sunflower family, what appears to be a single bloom is in reality a dense cluster of individually small flowers borne in an inflorescence. In this species the inflorescence is conical and has five to ten large white bracts beneath it, so that along with the tiny white florets, the whole structure is ...
No interaction was found between border group and gender for either outcome (data not shown; P for interaction = 0.747 for current smoking and P = 0.882 for former smoking). However, the association between former smoking and border population varied by diagnosis status (P for interaction = 0.002). The interaction for current smoking was marginally significant (P = 0.057). Predicted probabilities suggest that the probability of being a former smoker was higher among diagnosed than undiagnosed U.S. Hispanics with a smoking history (76.0% versus 23.7%). However, there was little difference among Mexicans based on diagnosis (39.1% for diagnosed versus 41.7% for undiagnosed). Similarly, U.S. Hispanics with diabetes had a substantially lower probability of being a current smoker if diagnosed (5.3%) versus undiagnosed (18.8%), whereas this probability was slightly higher among diagnosed (20.0%) than undiagnosed (17.8%) Mexicans.. DISCUSSION. In 2001 2002, one in five adults with diabetes residing on ...
Study Purpose: Oral contraception (OC) currently requires a prescription. It has been suggested that this requirement should be eliminated. In the debate over removing the prescription requirement, two of the questions that need to be addressed are why women might prefer pharmacy access instead of obtaining pills at clinics, and who would take advantage of the pharmacy option if it were made available. So far, most of the evidence on these points has come from studies of women residing in countries other than the United States or from answers to hypothetical questions addressed to women in this country. To explore these questions, this study was conducted along the United States-Mexico border, where women who live in the United States are afforded an unusual opportunity: crossing the border, they can purchase over-the-counter (OTC) hormonal contraception at pharmacies for a reasonable price -- approximately US$5 per cycle. The motivations and experiences of OC users who obtained their ...
