A nuanced view of the Palmetto State in the twentieth century as written by the states leading historian. Originally published in 1992, South Carolina in the Modern Age was the first history of contemporary South Carolina to appear in more than a quarter century and helped establish the reputation of the Palmetto States premier historian, Walter Edgar, who had not yet begun the two landmark volumes-South Carolina: A History and The South Carolina Encyclopedia-that also bear his name. Available once again, this illustrated volume chronicles transformational events in South Carolina as the state emerged from the devastation that followed the Civil War and progressed through the challenges of the twentieth century.. After the Civil War, South Carolina virtually disappeared from the national consciousness and became a historical backwater. But as the nation began to look to the twentieth century, South Carolina stirred once again. It took a world war, the U.S. Supreme Court, and strong-willed ...

The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to South Carolina:. South Carolina - state in the Southeastern United States on the Atlantic coast. Originally part of the Province of Carolina, the Province of South Carolina was the first of the 13 colonies that declared independence from the British Crown during the American Revolution. South Carolina was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation, the 8th state to ratify the US Constitution on May 23, 1788. South Carolina later became the first state to vote to secede from the Union which it did on December 20, 1860. It was readmitted to the United States on June 25, 1868.[note 1]. ...
The spelling Charleston was adopted in 1783[30][59] as part of the citys formal incorporation.[26]. Although Columbia replaced it as the state capital in 1788, Charleston became even more prosperous as Eli Whitneys 1793 invention of the cotton gin sped the processing of the crop over 50 times. The development made short-staple cotton profitable and opened the upland Piedmont region to slave-based cotton plantations, previously restricted to the Sea Islands and Lowcountry. Britains Industrial Revolution-initially built upon its textile industry-took up the extra production ravenously and cotton became Charlestons major export commodity in the 19th century. The Bank of South Carolina, the second-oldest building in the nation to be constructed as a bank, was established in 1798. Branches of the First and Second Bank of the United States were also located in Charleston in 1800 and 1817. Throughout the Antebellum Period, Charleston continued to be the only major American city with a ...

Roof allegedly posted a highly racist manifesto online accompanied by photos of himself hold the flag of the Confederacy as well as the gun used to murder the nine African-American churchgoers.. "Following a period of mourning, there will rightly be a discussion among leaders in the state about how South Carolina should move forward and Im confident they will do the right thing," Bush said.. Texas Senator Ted Cruz also demurred, saying the flag is "a question for South Carolina. And the last thing they need is people from outside of the state coming in and dictating how they should resolve it.". Cruz, who has a reputation for being a rhetorical bomb thrower, also lamented that the issue was being used "as a wedge to try to divide people.". Florida Senator Marco Rubio also took a pass, saying, "Ultimately the people of South Carolina will make the right decision for South Carolina and I believe in their capacity to make that decision. The next president of the United States will not make that ...
The South Carolina Senate is the upper house of the South Carolina General Assembly, the lower house being the South Carolina House of Representatives. It consists of 46 senators elected from single member districts for four-year terms at the same time as United States Presidential elections.. The South Carolina Constitution of 1895 provided for each county to elect one senator for a four-year term. The election of senators was staggered so that half of the state Senate was elected every two years. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1964 for the case Reynolds v. Sims, the state Senate was reapportioned in 1966 as a temporary measure into 27 districts with 50 members for two-year terms. In 1967, the state Senate was again reapportioned, this time into 20 districts with 46 members for four-year terms. The number of districts was reduced to 16 in 1972 and in 1984, they were eliminated with the creation of single member districts.. The annual session of the General Assembly convenes at the State ...

By the 1850s, the average patient paid $250 annually. A separate room and eating area cost another $100. Paupers were admitted for an annual fee of $135, which was billed to the patients home district. As more paupers were admitted, it became harder to collect fees, and the asylum grew more dependent on state funding. Due to the large number of people being admitted land was needed for new buildings and for patient recreation and gardens. Some asylum leaders believed the institution should be moved to the country. Largely because the legislature was unwilling to fund a new complex, it remained at the original location. Land was purchased next to the complex, and more buildings were erected. The headquarters for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health remain on these grounds even today ...

During the late 19th century the discovery of phosphate deposits in the Charleston and Florence areas marked the beginning of a rapidly growing industry in South Carolina.. Phosphates are rocks formed from the fossilized remains of sea creatures found in areas once covered by oceans. In South Carolina, phosphates were used as fertilizers to extend the life of crops. Freedmen flocked toward the industry seeking employment, and with the financial support of Northern financiers, Carolina farmers began production of this highly sought-after material.. Soon after the introduction of the phosphate industry, the popular market collapsed due to an over-saturated market. After only twenty years of production, the phosphate industry was essentially over for South Carolina. Long-since ended, signs of the briefly successful industry still exist in Charleston in road names and signs of geological incursion.. ...

The SCHA Reengineering Steering Committee has been working diligently, with full Board support, to accomplish the "Triple Aim" of improving the health care experience for every patient in South Carolina; enhancing the heath status and reducing the health disparities within the communities you all serve; and reducing the cost burden related to health and health care for our state and its citizens. Our first prime example of this Triple Aim-based work is the South Carolina Birth Outcomes Initiative that we are leading with DHHS and many other South Carolina health care organizations to improve perinatal outcomes for moms and babies, reduce major disparities across our state in birth outcomes, and create measurable cost savings related to perinatal/neonatal care.. The first major component of this initiative will be a collective effort to eliminate non-medically necessary elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks of pregnancy. There is a large body of national evidence that supports the positive impact ...

St. Louis (October 20, 2016)- The American Optometric Association (AOA), the nations leading authority on eye health and vision care, the South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association (SCOPA) and member doctors serving communities across South Carolina continue to support the states landmark patient protection law - recently approved by near unanimous bi-partisan majorities in the legislature in Columbia - thats designed to protect patients from ineffective and unproven online vision services that make false, misleading and harmful product claims. This latest special-interest attack from a company attempting to expand their business in spite of patient safety concerns is unfounded and groundless. "Illinois-based Opternative and its law firm, The Institute for Justice, are not concerned about the health care needs of the people of South Carolina," said Barbara L.
