Pneumonia and asthma are the common diseases in pediatric population. The diseases share some similarities of symptoms that make them difficult to separate without the proper diagnostic tools. The majority of pneumonia cases occur in the third world countries wherein even the basic diagnostic tools (e.g.: x-ray) are extremely rare. In these countries, the WHO recommends using rapid breathing and chest in-drawing as approach to diagnose pneumonia in children with cough. As the results, many asthma patients were misdiagnosed as pneumonia and prescribed for unnecessary antibiotic treatment. In this study, we propose a cough sound analysis based method to differentiate pneumonia from asthma. Cough is the major symptom of pneumonia and asthma. Past studies showed the acoustic of cough sounds may carry important information related with the diseases. However, there were no attempts to use cough sounds to separate pneumonia and asthma in pediatric population. Our method extracted sound features such as ...

Sound signals used on the waterways are like the turn light indicators used to signal intentions on the highways. Sound signals are also like an automobiles horn used to let other drivers know you are near or to alert them of danger. All boaters should know proper sound signals, especially those boaters operating near commercial vessel traffic.. Sound signals are composed of short and prolonged blasts and must be audible for at least one-half mile: ...

hi yvette…please follow these strategies and get back to me with any questions: HOW TO TEACH THE K SOUND. The K sound is a stop sound that is made in the back of your throat. It is a un-voiced sound…which means that your motor is off…this mean that your vocal folds do NOT move or vibrate. When you make the K sound your tongue retracts to the back of your throat and touches your soft palate (where is your soft palate?…..you know the little thing that hangs in the back of your throat…thats your uvula..and your uvula is attached to your soft palate).. Often times when children have difficulty with the K sound they also have difficulty with the G sound. Why?? Because both K and G are stop sounds that are both produced in the back of the throat with the retraction of the tongue to the soft palate . So the K and G sounds are both velar sounds (velar or velum is another word for soft palate) that stop.. So…what is the difference between the two…when you make the G sound your vocal folds ...
Impact pile driving produces intense, broadband impulsive sounds that can propagate many kilometers. Near source (within 10 m of the pile driving activities) sound pressure levels (SPLs) range up to 220 dB peak, but vary substantially according to the size of the hammer, power of the hammer, pile material, diameter of the pile, as well as properties of the seafloor.. Two criteria for assessing the potential impacts of pile driving sounds are: 1) SPL peak and 2) cumulative sound exposure level (SELcum). For more information, please see the Advanced Topic on Sound Pressure Levels and Sound Exposure Levels.. Fishes. To investigate the potential effects of pile driving on fishes, several species of freshwater fish were exposed in a chamber to simulated pile driving sounds. The scientists reported that injuries varied according to the peak pressure, number of strikes, the species of fish, and whether a fish had a swim bladder. The scientists found that at the lowest sound pressure levels and fewest ...
Sound wave technology offers a non-invasive treatment for pain and lameness. High energy sound waves are a type of pressure using vibration on an object. Also known as pulses, controlled sound waves penetrate soft tissue to the area to be treated and stimulating the body to repair itself.. Sound wave technology cuts healing time and can relieve pain in 1-3 treatments. The treatments take between 5-10 minutes. The dog is anesthetized with a short-acting anesthesia. The fur is clipped and a special gel is applied. Recovery time is minimal. However dogs receiving the treatment should not take part in strenuous activity for a few days to allow healing. Sound wave therapy can be used with dogs suffering with arthritis, joint injuries, chronic back pain, slow-healing bone fractures, tendon/ligament injuries, chronic wounds such as lick granuloma. ...

Physicians have used the presence and characteristics of cough as a diagnostic tool for many years. Researchers have shown that cough sound analysis can assist in the diagnosis of respiratory disease [1]. Important considerations such as cough intensity and duration may affect the sounds produced by the lungs. To reliably classify cough sounds, these considerations must be addressed. Measurement o
The IEC 61672-1 specifies three kinds of sound measuring instruments.[5] They are the conventional sound level meter, the integrating-averaging sound level meter, and the integrating sound level meter. The standard sound level meter can be called an exponentially averaging sound level meter as the AC signal from the microphone is converted to DC by a root-mean-square (RMS) circuit and thus it must have a time constant of integration; today referred to as the time-weighting. Three of these time-weightings have been internationally standardized, S (1 s) originally called Slow, F (125 ms) originally called Fast and I (35 ms) originally called Impulse. Their names were changed in the 1980s to be the same in any language. I-time-weighting is no longer in the body of the standard because it has little real correlation with the impulsive character of noise events. The output of the RMS circuit is linear in voltage and is passed through a logarithmic circuit to give a readout linear in ...
Abstract: COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has led to a treacherous and devastating catastrophe for humanity. At the time of writing, no specific antivirus drugs or vaccines are recommended to control infection transmission and spread. The current diagnosis of COVID-19 is done by Reverse-Transcription Polymer Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing. However, this method is expensive, time-consuming, and not easily available in straitened regions. An interpretable and COVID-19 diagnosis AI framework is devised and developed based on the cough sounds features and symptoms metadata to overcome these limitations. The proposed frameworks performance was evaluated using a medical dataset containing Symptoms and Demographic data of 30000 audio segments, 328 cough sounds from 150 patients with four cough classes ( COVID-19, Asthma, Bronchitis, and Healthy). Experiments results show that the model captures the better and robust feature embedding to distinguish between COVID-19 ...
When they started the program in 2004, I was one-year-old, said Johnson. Ive been around the program my whole life. Being a five-star shows that my hard work has paid off and schools have noticed.. Johnsons five-star status wasnt lost on Blackwell.. It just goes to show you that Sound Mind Sound Body camps are just as important as Rivals, ESPN and other national events. Our program has been around nationally for over 16 years. I hope more top football prospects pay close attention to Will, said Blackwell.. Will has been around us his entire life. His dad has invested a lot of time into the Sound Mind Sound Body program and has seen it grow firsthand. He always wanted his own son to benefit from a program he helped create. I dont think it gets any better than that. Johnson, 17, has grown into a 6-foot-2, 180-pound stalwart in the ...
Normal human hearing is said to be in the range of 20 to 20,000 Hz (hertz). Too high and we tend to feel pain, too low and we appear to hear nothing. There are not too many natural sounds at the higher end of the human hearing range, but there are plenty below the range. These low-frequency sounds are called infrasound and examples include sounds made by elephants and dolphins to communicate long distances, thunderstorms and other strong weather conditions, ocean waves, whistling pipes and even trains travelling on tracks.. We do not consciously hear these sounds, but they do seem to have an effect on our bodies, both physiologically and psychologically. If we consider sound as a vibrating energy then our bodies may be able to detect these vibrations without our conscious awareness. Just because the vibrations are too low for us to audibly perceive them as sound, does not mean that our bodies do not still react to these vibrations. In fact, people often report feelings of anxiety, panic or fear ...
Graham and I spent a grueling 8 hours composing and recording sound throughout the film: Lo pads, high sustained pitches or climbing, little sonic stings here and there. Paul Simon once said that the sound is the most important thing he listens to in his music, not the words, melody, or chord changes, but the sound. It was Dylans orchestration, sound that pissed everyone off in the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Not the words, not the music, but the SOUND. I just picked up the new book, THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC (more on that later) which has been thought provoking, and this notion of SOUND was one of the elements discussed at length. Ironically, I read that chapter the day Graham asked me for SOUND supplements in the film.. I think I will start incorporating this element in my teaching of music theory. What does this music SOUND like? State the obvious. will be a refrain this year.. Oh yeah, I finished the music for CAGES today.Whew! Tomorrow Ill get to hear it all in a Dolby 5.1 theater. ...

I am trying to find a description of sound waves and speed of sound in gases using Kinetic Theory. I mean to derive the sound waves in a medium like gas , composed of molecules moving and colliding as Kinetic Theory describes. The origin of the sound wave, as our experience shows, is the perturbation produced by percussion on a wall or some shock inside the gas. What I am trying to understand is which collision mechanism is involved in the transport of such a perturbation through the gas. And I would understand this not only qualitatively, but I would find a mathematical description of this mechanism as is done in solids ...
The decibel level of a sound having the threshold intensity of[latex]\boldsymbol{10^{-12}\textbf{ W/m}^2}[/latex]is[latex]\boldsymbol{\beta=0\textbf{dB}},[/latex]because[latex]\boldsymbol{\textbf{log}_{10}1=0}.[/latex]That is, the threshold of hearing is 0 decibels. Table 2 gives levels in decibels and intensities in watts per meter squared for some familiar sounds.. One of the more striking things about the intensities in Table 2 is that the intensity in watts per meter squared is quite small for most sounds. The ear is sensitive to as little as a trillionth of a watt per meter squared-even more impressive when you realize that the area of the eardrum is only about[latex]\boldsymbol{1\textbf{ cm}^2},[/latex]so that only[latex]\boldsymbol{10^{-16}}[/latex]W falls on it at the threshold of hearing! Air molecules in a sound wave of this intensity vibrate over a distance of less than one molecular diameter, and the gauge pressures involved are less ...

The human body is a living entity of vibrations and wavelengths. A healthy body vibrates at its own frequency. In a sick body, the frequency is disturbed and out of tune. When sound is introduced to the body and energy field, the vibrations spread quickly because the body is about 90% water, and sound travels faster through water. Sound travels through the energy pathways of the meridians and the chakras, helping the body to tune into its own frequency. Sound removes stuck energies that are causing exhaustion and depleting the body of its vitality. Because cells have vibrational memory, sound and color healing reminds them to balance themselves, thus creating healing on a cellular level.. Sound and color therapy is the art of introducing different spectral hues and sounds into the human organism for the purpose of promoting health, balance, and well being.. The human body has its own rhythmic patterns, and there is growing evidence that the rhythms of the heart, brain, and other organs, enjoy a ...

The contraction-relaxation cycle in muscle is regulated by the release of Ca2+ from, and its uptake by, the SR (Ebashi and Endo, 1968). In fish sound-producing muscles, the maximum frequency of sound produced is determined by the maximum frequency of twitch fusion, which is primarily dependent on the rate of relaxation of twitch tension, which is dependent on the rate of Ca2+ uptake by the SR (Skoglund, 1959). In accordance with this view, the fractional SR volume in the sound-producing muscle fibres, including the SBM fibres, is much larger than that in skeletal muscle fibres (Peachey and Porter, 1959; Fawcett and Revel, 1961; Revel, 1962; Franzini-Armstrong, 1972; Appelt et al., 1991; Suzuki et al., 2003).. Twitches produced by repetitive motor nerve stimulation of the SBM tend to decrease rapidly with time (Fig. 5A), as has also been reported by Hidaka and Toida (1969). This may result, at least in part, from the myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration gradually decreasing during repetitive motor nerve ...

Simulated molecular dynamics at the nanoscale show tremendous potential for improved manipulation of particles and molucules in fluids. In his fellowship project, Professor James Friend is examining the phenomena of rapid fluid flow in nanochannels induced by surface acoustic waves. Very high frequency sound waves (10-1000 MHz) applied in microchannels enables pumping, mixing, particle separation and other phenomena useful for medical diagnostics and chemical detection devices.. At the nanoscale, molecular dynamics simulations are showing potential for over five orders of magnitude improvement on any current method known for manipulating fluids and nanoparticles and molecules within.. At MCN, the focused ion beam and electron beam lithography facilities, the UV lithography and deep reactive ion etch instruments are all crucially important in fabricating the acoustic wave devices and the nanostructures on them. These facilities are especially convenient as they are adjacent to laboratories at the ...
This assumption holds true for the power-line noise and biological signals. , lung sounds. Even if we assume that the heart and lung sounds are uncorrelated in their source of generation, they become correlated when we record them on the surface of the chest wall as they both pass through the same medium. Two groups, who applied adaptive filtering for heart sound reduction, used ECG signals instead of the heart sound as the copy of the noise input [26, 27]. This is highly questionable as the ECG signal is not the noise of the lung sound record and hence even if the filter tries to adapt itself to the ECG signal, the results will not be meaningful. This technique has been applied for separating speech signals [34] and for heart sound reduction [35]. The assumption in applying this method is that the source signals are originally statistically independent and at least one of them has the Gaussian distribution. At least two versions of the mixed signals are required although the more the better the ...
The sound is characteristic to its source, to the circumstances during the propagation, and to the perceptible capacity of the observer. The classical question in the noise control is true also in the present; if the received sound is disturbing or not? On the other hand, give the troublesome noise carried sound signals any information to the observer, or they are fully unwanted? The case study is a new approach to analyze the infant cry. The infant cry seems to be a typical noise as a social point of view, but it is a very important information source in medicine, in infant care and in the family. Since the last few years weve been involved in traditional medical researches in our country to obtain the cry signal of young infants. The acoustic analysis of the cries produced important aspects of explanations. Infant cries may refer the life demands, different illness symptoms and moods of the investigated infants. Our latest research results give possibility to elaborate a rapid method for ...

PS: More about the case in Grenoble. Again this is what Ive heard from sound engineers. These big concerts use directional systems (line array, or phased array, or system V-DOSC). The common problem that sound engineers face is that theres a large crowd, and sound needs to travel and gets attenuated while doing so. With a directional system, you can try to have a more homogenous sound level in the audience: you jack up the higher beams to reach afar, but keep the lower beams relatively softer to avoid deafening (instantly) the audience close to the stage. Nice on paper, but if you mistune the system (which may apparently have been the case in Grenoble), you may do worse than good. And even worse, if you dont have that system but are used to it, you may forget that you should not have 95 dB at the console at the back of the audience ...

Washington, July 14 : A new study conducted by Northwestern University researchers offers an unparalleled look at how noise affects the nervous systems ability to transcribe sounds whose subtle differences are key to success with language and reading.. The study suggests that distinguishing such sounds is too much to ask of the nervous system of a subset of poor readers whose hearing is fine, but whose brains have trouble differentiating the ba, da and ga sounds in a noisy environment.. The b, d and g consonants have rapidly changing acoustic information that the nervous system has to resolve to eventually match up sounds with letters on the page, said Nina Kraus, Hugh Knowles Professor of Communication Sciences and Neurobiology and director of Northwesterns Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory, where the work was performed.. According to the researcher, the brains unconscious faulty interpretation of sounds makes a big difference in how words ultimately will be ...

A hair cell that responds best to low frequency sounds will be located at the base end of the basilar membrane. Hair cells in the utricle and saccule are able to respond to linear acceleration of the head because calcium carbonate (otoliths or otoconia) increase the density of the gelatinous material (otolithic membrane). Hair cells in the utricle and the saccule provide information about the orientation of the head with respect to gravity. Bending of the stereocilia towards the kinocilium opens mechanically gated ion channels in the hair cells increasing the potassium current and hence changing the membrane potential. Hair cells in the ampulla of a semicircular canal (semicircular duct) respond to angular acceleration of the duct because the inertia of the endolymph distorts the cupula. ...

With a body length of 10 m and an estimated mass of 9800 kg (Lockyer, 1981), the whale tagged with tag IV probably contained some 2001 of air after inhalation while at the surface (inferred from Clarke, 1978). If the lungs of a sperm whale collapse (Ridgway, 1971) as they do in smaller odontocetes (Ridgway et al., 1969), the whale would have had, at most, 3.51 of air available to it for sound production at a depth of 600 m. Thus, sperm whales recycle the air after each click or group of clicks (as demonstrated in Tursiops sp.; Dormer, 1979) and/or use very small volumes of air to generate each click. Considering the highly reduced air volume available for sound production when the whale is at a depth of 700 m and that sperm whales have been reported to phonate at depths of more than 2000 m (Whitney, 1968), it is conceivable that air simply is not involved in sperm whale sound production. That view, however, is not supported by experimental data on sound production in the homologous structures of ...

Ultrasound machines are a treatment modality used by Chiropractors that utilize high or low frequency sound waves. These sound waves are transmitted to the surrounding tissue and vasculature. They penetrate the muscles to cause deep tissue/muscle warming. This promotes tissue relaxation and therefore is useful in treating muscle tightness and spasms. The warming effect of the sound waves also cause vessel vasodilatation and increased circulation to the area that assists in healing. The Chiropractor can also adjust the frequency on the machine to use waves that will decrease inflammation.. ...

Ag-TiO2, Cu-TiO2 and Ni-TiO2 were prepared by sonication. The interactions of Ti-gel with silver, copper and nickel ions under ultrasound irradiation are very different, although these ions can be dispersed very well in titania. The results of EDXA and XRD analysis indicate that Ti-gel does not react with AgCl and crystallizes unaffectedly to form rutile. M(OH)2 (M = Cu and Ni), on the other hand, favors polycondensation with Ti-gel and affects the crystallization of Ti-gel. CuO favors stabilization of the anatase phase. Ni2+ ions tend to incorporate more easily into titania than Cu2+ ions do when the samples are calcined. TEM, and BET were also used to characterize the samples.
This is the sound of air guns operating off Sable Island, Nova Scotia, but being recorded many thousands of kilometers away on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Note: This sound has been sped up by a factor of ten.Courtesy of NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory VENTS Program. Multiple airguns are typically arranged in a rectangular pattern to form a tuned airgun array. The direct sound generated from each airgun combines to produce a much louder sound than that from just a single airgun. Airguns produce intense, broadband, impulsive sounds. The tuned airgun array produces an acoustic beam directed toward the seafloor. In addition, acoustic energy can also propagate laterally into the water column fortens to hundreds of kilometers from the source, though sound does get weaker as it moves away from the source.. Sounds produced by seismic airguns have the potential to cause injury, hearing loss, behavioral changes, and masking in fishes, marine mammals, and invertebrates. However, data on the ...
Salt Lake City, UT. Popular version of paper 4pMU4 How well can a human mimic the sound of a trumpet?. Presented Thursday May 26, 2:00 pm, Solitude room. 171st ASA Meeting Salt Lake City. Man-made musical instruments are sometimes designed or played to mimic the human voice, and likewise vocalists try to mimic the sounds of man-made instruments. If flutes and strings accompany a singer, a brassy voice is likely to produce mismatches in timbre (tone color or sound quality). Likewise, a fluty voice may not be ideal for a brass accompaniment. Thus, singers are looking for ways to color their voice with variable timbre.. Acoustically, brass instruments are close cousins of the human voice. It was discovered prehistorically that sending sound over long distances (to locate, be located, or warn of danger) is made easier when a vibrating sound source is connected to a horn. It is not known which came first - blowing hollow animal horns or sea shells with pursed and vibrating lips, or cupping the ...

Music Generation Cork City (MGCC) unveil the first video in their Lockdown Soundz series.. Borne out of the need for musical creativity and expression in the midst of a pandemic, the Lockdown Soundz project came into being over recent weeks.. Inspired by the editing skills of MGCC musician educator, JJ Riordan and his own found sounds videos, MGCC realised this was something the young people on their programmes could do easily in their own homes. The word was spread and all kinds of random sounds were found during the lockdown. The ultimate goal - to create an audio-visual composition featuring those sounds.. The response to that first installation has been tremendous, with a huge swath of video clip submissions being sent in, that included all manner of household items being found to make a sound!. The fruits of this collaboration are now complete and MGCC are very proud to share this Found Sounds compilation video with you here - https://youtu.be/qLPGpnMVjI8. Details of the next Lockdown ...

Suggestions as to the function of the crest has been made through comparisons with those of cassowaries and other oviraptorids; multiple potential functions have been identified, and it likely had more than one purpose. Modern cassowary casques serve in-part a thermoregulatory function, and the similarly structured crest of Corythoraptor could have likely had a similar effect.[1][2] Another possible use would be to detect and produce low frequency sounds for detection of predators or communication with other individuals. However, the authors cautioned this was likely not the primary purpose of the structure, and that the idea is complicated by the fact that it is unknown if both sexes had the crest. Instead, they suggest the crest was primarily a visual display structure. Both of these hypothesized functions would have served a sociosexual role.[1] ...
What kinds of percussion instruments should we use? Start with just a few, and use instruments of as high a quality as you can. Percussion instruments are not toys, and cheap instruments will not add to the quality (or the sincerity) of worship. On the other hand, wonderful instruments can be made with inexpensive materials.. Think of the kinds of sounds the instruments make: high, medium, and low sounds; hard, crisp sounds or soft, swishy sounds; rattling, wooden sounds; ringing or metallic sounds. Good percussion combines and contrasts different sounds to support the pulse of the music, the shape of the hymn, and the emotions expressed by the singing congregation.. High, crisp sounds produced by snare drums, tambourines, or claves (those round, wooden, dowel-shaped sticks) cut through all other sounds; they tend to dominate and set the tempo in the same way that hand claps do, and for the same reason.. Soft, swishy sounds, like small maracas or rhythm eggs, fill in the middle of the sound ...
Music is sound thats organized by people on purpose, to dance to, to tell a story, to make other people feel a certain way, or just to sound pretty or be entertaining. Music is organized on many different levels. Sounds can be arranged into melodies, harmonies, rhythms, textures and phrases. Beats, measures, cadences, and form all help to keep the music organized and understandable. But the most basic way that music is organized is by arranging the actual sound waves themselves so that the sounds are interesting and pleasant and go well together.. A rhythmic, organized set of thuds and crashes is perfectly good music - think of your favorite drum solo - but many musical instruments are designed specifically to produce the regular, evenly spaced sound waves that we hear as particular pitches. Crashes, thuds, and bangs are loud, short jumbles of lots of different wavelengths. These are the kinds of sound we often call noise, when theyre random and disorganized, but as soon as they are ...
Auditory alarms in medical equipments perform considerably below their optimal level. Concern has been expressed about the quality of medical alarms by a large number of researchers in recent years. A detailed literature survey on the medical alarm related problems has been carried out. Hospital visits were made to obtain real life information and data of alarm sounds in various type of monitors used in OR and ICU. A laboratory experiment has been conducted on selected melodic alarm sounds. These melodic alarm sounds are being implemented in medical equipments and the idea of design is proposed in ISO / IEC 60601-1-8. The tests were computer-administered and participated by 13 volunteers. Initially, volunteers were trained with the individual alarm sounds and the physiological cause of the alarm. Subsequently, they were tested for their learnability of the alarm sounds in the presence and absence of background noise and the results were compared. The presence of background noise did not have much effect

Playing underwater sounds of a healthy coral reef can attract fish back to degraded and damaged areas.. Thats according to a new study led by the University of Exeter, which saw researchers place 33 patches of dead coral rubble in Australias Great Barrier Reef - on 11 of these patches, they used speakers to play sounds of a healthy reef.. After 40 days, there were twice as many young fish living on the patches where the sounds were played than in patches without sounds - the diversity of species was also 50% greater in these areas.. ...

None of us made a big deal about it at the time. When we arrived back at the ex-girlfriends parents home the next day, I went on the Internet and started to listen to sound clips of Northern Ontario wildlife. When I could not find a sound clip that came close. The ex-girlfriends step-dad made a comment like maybe it was big foot, so we listened to recordings on the BFRO web site. The Missisippi 2004 recording is the closest sound clip that I can find that sounds similar, though what we heard was much louder. I have continued to look for other sound clips that are closer matches, but that howl recording from Mississippi in 2004 is still the closest. OTHER WITNESSES: ex-girlfriend and her parents. Fundamentals of Acoustics (M ller, Vorl nder) You will learn about the physical fundamentals of sound in this session. After the definition of sound, a brief excursion into the perception of sound and its dependence on the frequency is performed followed by an introduction to the logarithmic scale and working with sound pressure levels. The physical basis for sound in air and the mathematical formulation of the governing differential equations are illustrated via audiovisual demonstrations. Further topics are principles of sound generation, propagation and interaction with boundaries as well as radiation of sound using models based on volume sources and the specific far-field and near-field characteristics. Application of the theory is illustrated using the example of a violin. Fundamentals of Signals and Systems (Ahrens) This session starts with a recapitulation of the most important principles in the system theory of time-continuous and time-discrete signals such as linearity, time invariance, ...

Submitted 2014-02-14 11:35:24 Pianos can be said to be since old since music itself. It happens to be one of the very first types of musical instrument ever made by guy. Though with time Giants Gordon Beckham Jersey , it experienced improved inside shapes and inside quality. Many musical groups out there these days can seldom do minus the piano. It is a special musical instrument through all specifications. It has been given lots of enhancements today to the particular extent that you could not need to make use of any other musical instrument like drums and guitar; the piano is built to produce sounds and is better than on its own to make your music nice to the ear. In summary, your own musical instruments should never be complete minus the addition of a piano. There are lots of outlets selling piano out there today. One that no one can actually sideline will be Lafargue Pianos ...

Anyone whos used a mobile for voice calls may have noticed that the background noise often sounds like speech or chirps. The characteristics of speech presumably have some features in common with birdsong and others not, and speech compression is presumably optimised for speech. However, there are other species which produce sounds somewhat speech-like but not identical, for instance birdsong, whale song and sounds made by other primates. Other species make more regular sounds, for instance cicadas and crickets.. So, my idea is this: find a method of sound compression which is lossy but optimised for species. It falls into two parts. One exploits characteristics common to all sound produced by animals, from cicadas to cockerels. The other is tweaked according to the species, the aim being to produce an output which the species concerned cant distinguish from the real thing, with the option of choosing compression optimised just for that species or for two different species. This would be ...
TY - GEN. T1 - Sound Source Localization for Hearing Aid Applications using Wireless Microphones. AU - Farmani, Mojtaba. AU - Pedersen, M. S.. AU - Jensen, Jesper. PY - 2018. Y1 - 2018. N2 - State-of-the-art hearing AIDS (HAs) can connect to a wireless microphone worn by a talker of interest. This ability allows HAs to have access to almost noise-free sound signals of the target talker. In this paper, we aim to estimate the direction of arrival (DoA) of the target signal, given access to the noise-free target signal. Knowing the DoA of the target signal enables HAs to spatialize the wirelessly received target signals. The proposed estimator is based on a maximum likelihood (ML) approach and a database of DoA-dependent relative transfer functions (RTFs),and it supports both monaural and binaural microphone array configurations. For binaural configurations,we propose an information fusion strategy, which decreases the number of parameters required to be wirelessly transferred between the HAs. Further, ...
The mechanism of hearing loss arises from trauma to stereocilia of the cochlea, the principal fluid filled structure of the inner ear. The pinna combined with the middle ear amplifies sound pressure levels by a factor of twenty, so that extremely high sound pressure levels arrive in the cochlea, even from moderate atmospheric sound stimuli. Underlying pathology to the cochlea are reactive oxygen species, which play a significant role in noise-induced necrosis and apoptosis of the stereocilia. Exposure to high levels of noise have differing effects within a given population, and the involvement of reactive oxygen species suggests possible avenues to treat or prevent damage to hearing and related cellular structures.. The elevated sound levels cause trauma to the cochlear structure in the inner ear, which gives rise to irreversible hearing loss. A very loud sound in a particular frequency range can damage the cochleas hair cells that respond to that range thereby reducing the ears ability to ...

The administrators from Manhattanville College visited St. Patricks Cathedral in New York City and fell in love with the acoustics that emanated from the audio system that we designed and Masque Sound installed, says Ben Bausher, CTS, Senior Consultant, Audio & Video Systems Group Jaffe Holden. Though Manhattanville College had recently installed a new sound system in the OByrne Chapel, it did not meet expectations, so they reached out to Masque Sound to deliver and install an updated audio system at the college. We have worked with Masque Sound in the past and it was great to be able to collaborate with them again.. For the project, the chapels audio system received a complete overhaul from rack to speakers. The main AV rack for the audio system was entirely rewired with the integration of a Yamaha QL1 console and Tio1608-D input module. Shure QLX-D® wireless systems are utilized using both bodypacks and handheld SM58 transmitters. Control parameters for the audio system have been set ...
