TY - JOUR. T1 - Enhancement of the advanced Fenton process (Fe0/H2O2) by ultrasound for the mineralization of phenol. AU - Segura, Y.. AU - Martínez, Fernando. AU - Melero, Juan Antonio. AU - Molina, Raul. AU - Chand, Rashmi. AU - Bremner, David H.. PY - 2012/2. Y1 - 2012/2. N2 - In this study, a successful mineralization of phenol was achieved by means of coupling zero-valent iron (ZVI) particles, hydrogen peroxide and a short input of ultrasonic irradiation. This short sono-advanced Fenton process (AFP) provided a better performance of ZVI in a subsequent silent degradation stage, which involves neither extra cost of energy nor additional oxidant. The short input of ultrasound (US) irradiation enhanced the activity of the Fe0/H2O2 system in terms of the total organic carbon (TOC) removal. Then, the TOC mineralization continued during the silent stage, even after the total consumption of hydrogen peroxide, reaching values of ca. 90% TOC conversions over 24 h. This remarkable activity is ...
Category: Heavy metals and base cations. Effects of acute inhalation exposure to cadmium consist mainly of effects on the lung, such as pulmonary irritation. Chronic effects via inhalation can cause a build-up of cadmium in the kidneys that can lead to kidney disease. Emissions have declined by 84% since 1990. The main sources are residential sector and industrial use of wood and other biomass fuels, which contributed 52% of emissions in 2018. Historically non-ferrous metal manufacture and municipal solid waste incineration were very significant sources. Emissions from non-ferrous metal activities have declined across the time-series, primarily due to the closure of the UKs only primary lead-zinc smelting plant in 2003 and only secondary copper refinery in 1999. Improved controls at Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incinerators played an important role in emission reductions from 1993 to 1996, and the contribution from the burning of MSW have decreased from 39% of total UK cadmium emissions in 1990 ...
The objective of this experimental study was to determine the effect of agronomic practices usually implemented in olive groves (addition of olive mill waste and herbicides) on soil microbial communities and to test whether drought enhanced such effects. For that purpose, mesocosms containing soil cores from olive groves were incubated for 5 months under either of the three treatments: (i) addition of olive mill waste (OMW), (ii) addition of glyphosate-based herbicide (Gly treatment) and (iii) both treatments. Half of the mesocosms were subjected or not (controls) to drying-rewetting cycles (D/Rw) for 1 month (1 D/Rw) or 3 months (3 D/Rw). In the controls, 2 months after the Gly treatment, higher lipase activities were observed compared with no practice treatment as well as a significant change in catabolic profiles of cultivable microbial communities. Three months later, lipase activities significantly decreased under the Gly treatment. Addition of OMW together with Gly treatment counteracted the

Urban water reuse is one of the most rapidly growing water reuse applications worldwide and one of the major elements of the sustainable management of urban water cycle. Because of the high probability of direct contact between consumers and recycled water, many technical and regulatory challenges have to be overcome in order to minimize health risks at affordable cost. This paper illustrates the keys to success of one of the first urban water reuse projects in the island Bora Bora, French Polynesia. Special emphasis is given on the reliability of operation of the membrane tertiary treatment, economic viability in terms of pricing of recycled water and operating costs, as well as on the benefits of water reuse for the sustainable development of tourist areas.

By: Dr. Phil Rolchigo. Around the country, more and more cities are faced with a diminishing water supply due in part to uncontrollable circumstances such as extended drought and changing weather patterns. Conservation alone is not enough to reverse the trend. With more than 32 billion gallons of municipal wastewater produced every day in the United States, water reuse, the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation, has the potential to increase the nations total water supply, while also providing an additional revenue stream for municipalities.. As a result, we are seeing three emerging trends in the area of resource recovery from wastewater: Municipal Water Reuse Solutions. Many municipalities are exploring opportunities to expand capability and increase revenue through both direct and indirect water reuse. And, while the technology exists to return wastewater to potable drinking water standards, a more ...

Economic assessment of bio-flocculant production process has been carried out by SuperPro Designer where extracellular-polymeric substances (EPS) were produced using activated sludge fortified with crude glycerol in fermenter followed by centrifugation. Considering EPS concentration of 60 g/L in production fermenter at 96 h, the unit production cost for slime EPS was estimated to be $ 0.95/L. The unit price of S-EPS was sensitive to inoculum size and EPS productivity (EPS concentration and fermentation time) in the fermented broth. Economic analysis was also conducted for EPS aided leachate treatment. The unit leachate treatment cost was 7.78 $/m³ and was sensitive to S-EPS unit production cost. To get same leachate treatment cost as current industrial practice (4 $/m³), S-EPS unit production cost should lower down to $ 0.5/L. The process has several advantages: 1) sludge and crude glycerol valorization for bio-flocculant production 2) Leachate treatment using environment friendly ...
An apparatus and method for the treatment of waste solids that allows for the direct transfer of heat between hot waste solids and cold waste solids in a tube-in-tube heat exchanger. Cold solid waste is moved from a cold solid waste source through one tube of the heat exchanger, and hot solid waste is move from a hot solid waste source through the other tube of the tube-in-tube heat exchanger, and heat is transferred from the hot solid waste to the cold solid waste. The waste treatment, including the heat exchange, can occur in a batch mode or in a continuous mode.
Nitrate leaching can have a direct impact on water quality. Nitrate is very mobile and easily leaches with water. Heavy rains can cause nitrates to leach downward in the soil below the root zone. Whether nitrates continue to leach downward, and into groundwater, depends on underlying soil and/or bedrock conditions, as well as depth to groundwater. If depth to groundwater is shallow and the underlying soil is sandy, the potential for nitrates to enter groundwater is relatively high. However, if depth to groundwater is deep and the underlying soil is heavy clay, nitrates will not likely enter groundwater. In some cases where dense hardpans are present, nitrate leaching will not progress beyond the depth of the hardpan.. Once nitrates get into the groundwater, the greatest concerns are for infants less than one year old and for young or pregnant animals. High levels of nitrates can be toxic to newborns, causing anoxia, or internal suffocation. Seek alternative water sources if nitrate levels exceed ...

California has recently allowed competition back into their electric service utility market. Regulation of the government has been a real move lately with Democratic politicians for the sake of political power and control.. Because California and several other states are going bankrupt they have no other choice but to resort to practical solutions and one of those has been to deregulate the electric utility industry again.. Many residential and commercial consumers now have a choice in who they choose for their electric company. The deregulation process results in lower electricity prices for commercial businesses and homes.. It sometimes requires the help of an energy consultant to help locate and find the cheapest electric company in Van Nuys California so that a commercial business gets a cheaper rate than who they are with now.. By comparing electric rates in a detailed proposal that outlines multiple electric companies competing for their business it can become very clear which electric ...

Reusing wastewater can assist in solving water shortage problems, reduce the amount of wastewater discharged to surface water bodies and, by extension, alleviate its adverse effects on humans and the environment. Organics found in wastewater can be removed through biological treatment, however, if secondary effluent is to be reused for potable or some nonpotable applications, some form of advanced treatment is required. Membranes are often used to further treat these effluents for water reuse as they require only a small footprint and can provide a high quality treated water. They are also robust as is relates to dealing with feed waters of varying composition. However, due to the accumulation of rejected contaminants and certain natural organic matter (NOM) constituents on membrane surfaces and within pores, fouling can be an important shortcoming of this technology. Small improvements in the reduction of foulants can translate into substantial improvements in production quantity and cost ...
Vegetated swales are shallow, open channels that are designed remove pollutants such as sediment by physically straining and filtering water through vegetation within the channel. As stormwater runoff flows along these channels, it is treated through vegetation slowing the water to allow sedimentation, filtering through a subsoil matrix, and/or infiltration into the underlying soils. Additionally, swales can serve as conveyance for storm water and can be used in place of traditional curbs and gutters; however, when compared to traditional conveyance systems the primary objective of a vegetated swale is filtration and water quality enhancement rather than conveyance. Some designs also include infiltration through subsurface soil media, or underlying soils to reduce peak runoff volume during storms.. Vegetated swales are effective for removing. ...

Sometimes opportunity finds you. In 2003, Cherry Hills Community Church called Baby Buds Director Dianne Sager with a question. The recovery organization that had been cleaning their facility had just closed and Cherry Hills needed a new partner. Would Baby Buds be interested in cleaning the school at Cherry Hills? Normally a retail baby store would think twice about committing to a job completely unrelated to its core business. But Dianne had 20 years of experience managing a janitorial company prior to Baby Buds. She saw this as a new opportunity to employ more single moms. Within a couple of weeks, Baby Buds added five single moms for a cleaning crew and Freedom Cleaning Services was born. Within a year, the business had grown to employ ten women with several other churches and commercial businesses as clients. One of the challenges to any business start-up is maintaining the focus on your core business when other opportunities arise. Sometimes its good to pur ...

The final rules, which address only the incineration of nonhazardous solid wastes, will protect public health by reducing exposure to air pollution.. ...
Urban sinks accumulate phosphorus and other elements and may serve as sources of secondary raw materials. This paper evaluates phosphorus sources based on their environmental impact. In a life cycle assessment (LCA) the conventional production was used as a yardstick against which tomeasure the performance of two recycling options: spreading of sewage sludge and phosphorus recovery from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWA). When compared as three gate-to-gate processes, the sludge spreading had the lowest potential environmental impact, except in the impact categories eco- and human toxicity. In the future, the sludge spreading could potentially outperform the conventional process also with regard to toxicity, provided its Hg and Cu content can be reduced. Phosphorus extracted from the MSWA had the highest impact, except in relation to eutrophication. The benefits of avoiding the conventional production were greater than the sludge recycling impacts for all categories except toxicity. When

B. Industrial Solid Waste. Industrial solid waste - the non-toxic or non-hazardous waste generated by various industries is normally not identified as different from municipal solid waste coming from domestic and commercial activities. In many ASEAN countries, it has been included as part of municipal solid waste. As a result, there is an absence of a systematic database on industrial solid waste and the exact rates of industrial waste generation are not known. The lack of information on industrial solid waste is lamentable because it can actually include a wide range of materials that may have different levels of impact on the environment.. The types of industrial solid waste would include packaging materials, paper, housekeeping wastes, food wastes, scrap materials such as glass and ceramics, resins, plastics, metal and plastic scraps, stones, cloth, rubber, straw, wood waste, products which are off-specification and a variety of materials not officially specified as or are known to be ...

Three hydrolysis methods were assessed: enzymatic hydrolysis, acid pretreatment plus enzymatic hydrolysis, and acid hydrolysis. Fermentation was carried out using two bacterial species: Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. Our results showed that the enzymatic hydrolysis was the best pretreatment, yielding up to 29.5 and 13.7 mg/L of rhamnolipids and surfactins respectively. Glucose did not show significant differences in comparison to enzymatically hydrolysed OMW. At the best conditions found rhamnolipids and surfactins reached concentrations of 299 and 26.5 ...
According to the latest EPA data, Americans generated about 250 million tons of trash in 2011 and recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of this material, equivalent to a 34.7 percent recycling rate. Municipal solid waste does not include industrial, hazardous, or construction waste. It is things that we commonly use and then throw away such as packaging, food waste, computers, and furniture. Hazardous has any of the four characteristics: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity.. Organic materials comprise the largest percent of municipal solid waste. Paper and paperboard are next at 28 percent and yard trimmings and food waste accounts for another 28 percent.. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) set forth a framework for the management of non-hazardous wastes, as well as giving the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to control hazardous waste from the cradle-to-grave, which includes the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, and ...

Go back. Health impacts of solid waste. Modernization and progress has had its share of disadvantages and one of the main aspects of concern is the pollution it is causing to the earth be it land, air, and water. With increase in the global population and the rising demand for food and other essentials, there has been a rise in the amount of waste being generated daily by each household. This waste is ultimately thrown into municipal waste collection centres from where it is collected by the area municipalities to be further thrown into the landfills and dumps. However, either due to resource crunch or inefficient infrastructure, not all of this waste gets collected and transported to the final dumpsites. If at this stage the management and disposal is improperly done, it can cause serious impacts on health and problems to the surrounding environment.. Waste that is not properly managed, especially excreta and other liquid and solid waste from households and the community, are a serious health ...
Halophilic bacteria were isolated from Thamaraikulam solar salt works in India. After routine biosurfactant screening by various methods, the biosurfactant producing bacteria, Halomonas sp BS4 was confirmed by 16 S rRNA sequencing. The growth optimization of Halomonas sp BS4 revealed their optimum growth at 8% NaCl and 6-8 pH in the growth medium. Further the partially purified biosurfactants were characterized by TLC, FTIR and GC-MS analysis. GC-MS results revealed that, the partial purified biosurfactants contain 1, 2-Ethanediamine N, N, N, N-tetra, 8-Methyl-6-nonenamide, (Z)-9-octadecenamide and a fatty acid derivative. Pharmacological screening of antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticancer assays revealed that, the biosurfactant extracted from Halomonas sp BS4 effectively controlled the human pathogenic bacteria and fungi an aquaculturally important virus, WSSV. The biosurfactant also suppressed the proliferation of mammary epithelial carcinoma cell by 46.77% at 2.5 μg concentration.

Under the Manitoba Round Tables Strategy for Solid Waste Minimization and Management, a central obligation of the provincial government is to effectively reinforce waste minimization activities, such as recycling, and to ensure equitable opportunities and access to programs for program participants. Recycling is a system that includes a circuit of collection, processing, manufacture and consumption that diverts raw materials from the residential waste stream to industries for the manufacturing of new raw materials and products. Such activities provide benefits to both urban centres and rural municipalities in Manitoba and conserve resources. The Province of Manitoba, in proclaiming its Waste Reduction and Prevention (WRAP) Act in August 1990, enabled the Province to assign responsibilities for the stewardship of products and materials that have the potential to become waste. Under this Act, the government of Manitoba established the Manitoba Product Stewardship Corporation (MPSC) in January ...
Actually, only half of the C134 will be gone in 8 months. It will not be FAPP [For All Practical Purposes] gone-gone for another 19 years and some months. Per the adage that it takes 10 half-lives to decay away, FAPP.. The heart issues of workers at Daiichi (particularly the older ones, whose hearts no doubt suffered some wear and tear due to having lived that long), and now at this incineration plant, are quite likely associated with cesium exposure. Plus exposures to isotopes close to cesium on the scale, which may in a rush of intaken isotopes, forming temporary bio-bonds which would normally be eliminated much quicker than the cesium would be.. Remember hearing rumors of school kids suffering sudden and surprising heart issues in the area? Its all related. And further related to the 30-40% of children in the worst exposure areas now having thyroid nodules. It will get worse, day by day, week and month and year… everybody in the nuclear world and its regulatory lapdogs knows it. They ...
Composting Septic Sludge Tests Prove Successful. Composting septic sludge in 5 days AND making compost that is pathogen free is possible with the BioReactor by XACT Systems Inc. In this testing project, the septic sludge is combined with other materials in order to make a balanced recipe of organics with a C:N ratio in the ideal range (20:1 to 30:1). This is the vital first step in composting solid organic waste quickly and making compost that is pathogen free. The second step is to compost this proper mixture in the BioReactor which is an in vessel rotating drum composter. The composter rotates slowly and constantly. The rotation tumbles the waste material inside the drum and exposes all of the material to the ambient oxygen. The aerobic bacteria which naturally reside in the organic waste will decompose it. The fact that all the bacteria are getting all the oxygen they need to do a great job of breaking down the material means that the waste will compost quickly and with little or no odor. The ...

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued standards that would decrease emissions of key pollutants from waste incinerators. The EPA rules require incinerators to reduce emissions to a standard known as maximum achievable control technology, or MACT. The Research Council report says compliance with MACT regulations will diminish the exposure of local populations to emissions, but it is unclear what effect compliance will have on a metropolitan or regional scale, since little is known about the risks posed by collective emissions from several incinerators. The committee noted that cumulative emissions of dioxins and metals are of substantial concern since those pollutants are capable of traveling long distances and persisting in the environment. It also recommended that all medical- and municipal-waste incinerators have uniform limits for each pollutant irrespective of plant size, age, or design, as is currently the case for hazardous-waste incinerators ...
Biology Assignment Help, collection of solid waste, There are three methods of collections: 1. Kerbside collection: In this collection system the refuse is brought in containers and placed on the footway, from where it is collected by the waste collection agency. Materials are collected in
CCAP lead a discussion on how nationally appropriate mitigation actions, or NAMAs, can support broad-based reductions in ghg emissions from the waste sector, with a reception to follow.. Under the UN Climate framework, developing countries are asked to implement NAMAs that are consistent with their sustainable development priorities and with international technology, financing and capacity building support. This vehicle offers a flexible instrument to scale up methane initiatives across an entire sector or country, ideally through government policies and financial mechanisms that overcome barriers to private sector investment. Canada and other governments have been instrumental in providing support for feasibility studies to design NAMAs, and donor governments have recently announced plans to dedicate funds to support NAMA implementation.. This event shared progress made by CCAP in crafting the practical approach to developing NAMAs in three countries in Latin America in the solid waste sector, ...
When designing any leachate management system the assessment of the most economic method for leachate treatment and disposal is heavily dependent upon the flow rate and duration of flow. A high capital cost option such as on site leachate treatment will be worthwhile, but only if the total volume the plant treats daily is sustained […] ...

Finfish pens are point sources of dissolved nutrients released from fish metabolism or degradation of solid wastes. Nutrients leaching from uneaten feed and faeces are not usually quantified in mass budgets for these systems, leading to an overestimation of fish retention or deposition to the seabed. In this study, we investigated nutrient leaching from pellets and baitfish feed as well as faeces of southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) into seawater. Faeces were nitrogen depleted (51-54mg N g−1 dw) and phosphorus enriched (62-72 mg P g−1 dw) compared with feeds (83-111 mg N g−1 dw and 17-21 mg P g−1 dw). Less phosphorus was available for leaching from pellets and faeces of pellet-fed tuna (5-6%) than from baitfish and faeces of baitfish-fed tuna (17-21%). The proportion of soluble nitrogen in pellets (15%) was also lower than in baitfish and faeces (35-43%). Leaching loads for a feed conversion ratio of 5 were estimated as 22 and 26 kg N tonne−1 growth when baitfish or pellets were ...

Both problem and solution are at our fingertips, not on the drawing boards of Swiss or Swedish engineers. In the longer term, after the citizen has played his or her part by supporting source separation, reuse, recycling, composting and toxic removal, industry has to pay more attention to the way objects and materials are made and used. How an object is going to be reused or recycled has to be built into the initial design decisions. To recognise that it is overconsumption that is giving us both global warming and a waste disposal crisis, is to recognise that trash is the most concrete connection each individual has to the global crisis. More effort has to be put into resisting the largely post-war American philosophy that the more one consumes the happier one becomes, before it makes the planet uninhabitable. A way has to be found to tame the voracious appetites of the multinational corporations which plunder the world for short-term profit. This cannot be done until we as individuals find a ...

Waste generated and managed: Ideally, the ROE would present material use intensity as one indicator of progress in material use reduction. However, it is difficult to gather reliable data on a national scale regarding actual material consumption over the life cycles of all products and services. The ROE therefore presents two surrogate indicators for which reliable data are available: one on municipal solid waste and one on wastes classified as hazardous under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). These two types of wastes have the best available data, but collectively they represent a small percentage of total solid wastes generated in the United States ...
