Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is the third most agriculturally important crop from the genus Solanum after potato (S. tuberosum) [1] and tomato (S. lycopersicum) [2]. This large and diverse genus of flowering plants comprises ,1400 species having a wide range of genetic and phenotypic variation [3]. In 2011, 46.8 million tons of eggplant was produced in the top four producing countries, namely China (27.7 million tons), India (11.8 million tons), Egypt (1.1 million tons) and Turkey (8.2 million tons), according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (http://faostat.fao.org). There are three closely related cultivated species of eggplant, all of Old World origin: S. aethiopicum L. (scarlet eggplant), S. macrocarpon L. (gboma eggplant) and S. melongena L. (brinjal or aubergine eggplant) [4]. The brinjal or aubergine eggplant, hereafter referred to as eggplant, is cultivated worldwide and is an autogamous diploid with 12 chromosomes (2n = 2x = 24) [5]. Eggplant is ...

Production of doubled haploids (DHs) through androgenesis induction is an important biotechnological tool for plant breeding. In some species, DHs are efficiently obtained through embryogenesis from isolated microspore cultures. In eggplant, however, this process is still at its infancy, despite the economic relevance of this important agricultural crop. To date, only two studies have focused previously on this process, suggesting that in eggplant microspore cultures, the only morphogenic response is callus formation. Given the notable lack of studies on eggplant microspore cultures, in this work we explored this process with different experimental approaches. We studied the response of different cultivars and characterized the development of microspores induced to divide and proliferate. We demonstrated that microspore-derived embryos (MDEs) can be produced in eggplant; however, MDEs stopped at the globular stage, to turn into euploid and principally mixoploid calli. From these calli, 60 % of ...

Bacterial wilt (causal agent: Ralstonia solanacearum) and Phomopsis fruit rot (causal agent: Phomopsis vexans) are two major diseases constraining eggplant production in Bangladesh. No integrated management options to manage both diseases together are currently available; farmers spray pesticides. A 2-year participatory study was conducted to compare yield and disease severity of plants that originated from preceding nursery studies. Both soil and seed were found to be source of these pathogens. Seedlings raised according to farmers practice or in nursery soil treated with Trichoderma harzianum from seed treated either with hot water or Carbendazim were transplanted on fields either with or without soil application of T. harzianum. The seed treatments had comparable effects. Improved nursery management alone reduced wilt and fruit rot by 25-40 and 14-20 percentage points respectively, increased marketable yield by 8-19 t ha −1 and income by €1800-3700 ha −1 compared to farmers ...

DR2B and DR2C extracts, from peel of commercially and physiologically ripe eggplants, were studied for the antioxidative cytoprotective properties and anti-HSV-1 activity, in line with the evidence that several antioxidants can impair viral replication by maintaining reducing conditions into the host cells. The antioxidative cytoprotective effects against tBOOH-induced damage was assessed in Caco2 cells, while the antiviral activity was studied in Vero cells; phenolic and anthocyanin fingerprint was characterized by integrated phytochemical methods. Results highlighted different compositions of the extracts, with chlorogenic acid and delphinidin-3-rutinoside as the major constituents; other peculiar phytochemicals were also identified. DR2C resulted able to partly counteract the tBOOH-induced cytotoxicity, with a remarkable lowering of lactate metabolism under both normoxia and hypoxia. DR2B and DR2C reduced ROS production, possessed scavenging and chelating properties. Interestingly, DR2C increased
Eggplant is known to induce IgE-mediated hypersensitive reactions in sensitized individuals with a wide spectrum of symptoms varying from skin rashes, wheezing, itching of the eye, gastrointestinal abnormalities, and itching and hoarseness of the throat; prevalence is ~0.8% having a female predominance [12, 14, 15]. Only 2 cases of anaphylaxis to eggplant have been described so far, one of them in a patient with latex allergy [13, 16]. In this study, an attempt has been made to study the localization of allergens in different parts of eggplant fruit (peel and pulp) using sera from 6 eggplant-allergic subjects. The effect of cooking on the allergenicity of eggplant, and the presence of glycans in the allergenic proteins and their gastric stability in vitro were assessed.. The most common clinical presentation of eggplant allergy in the study subjects is either localized or generalized skin rashes (urticaria) affecting different parts of the body within 1-2 hours of ingestion of eggplant in cooked ...

Genetic control of parthenocarpy, a desirable trait in edible fruit with hard seeds, has been extensively studied. However, the molecular mechanism of parthenocarpic fruit development in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is still unclear. To provide insights into eggplant parthenocarpy, the transcriptomic profiles of a natural parthenocarpic (PP05) and two non-parthenocarpic (PnP05 and GnP05) eggplant lines were analyzed using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology. These sequences were assembled into 38925 unigenes, of which 22683 had an annotated function and 3419 were predicted as novel genes or from alternative splicing. 4864 and 1592 unigenes that were identified as DEGs between comparison groups PP05 vs PnP05 and PP05 vs GnP05, respectively. 506 common DEGs were found contained in both comparison groups, including 258 up-regulated and 248 down-regulated genes. Functional enrichment analyses identified many common or specific biological processes and gene set potentially associated with plant

Bt Brinjal is a transgenic brinjal created by inserting a gene [Cry 1Ac] from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis into Brinjal. The insertion of the gene into the Brinjal cell in young cotyledons has been done through an Agro bacterium-mediated vector, along with other genes like promoters, markers etc. This is said to give the Brinjal plant resistance against lepidopteron insects like the Brinjal Fruit and Shoot Borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) and Fruit Borer (Helicoverpa armigera). It is reported that upon ingestion of the Bt toxin by the insect, there would be disruption of digestive processes, ultimately resulting in the death of the insect. Bt Brinjal is being developed in India by M/s Mahyco [Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company]. Now, the company wants to take up large scale field trials with the permission of the GEAC in 2006-07. The importance of this development can be understood from the fact that no GM Brinjal has been released for an advanced stage of field trials in open conditions ...

An efficient variety-independent method for producing transgenic eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated genetic transformation was developed. Root explants were transformed by co-cultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 harbouring a binary vector pBAL2 carrying the reporter gene \beta-glucuronidase intron (GUS-INT) and the marker gene neomycin phosphotransferase (NPTII). Transgenic calli were induced in media containing 0.1 mg$ l-^{1}$ thidiazuron (TDZ), 3.0 mg $l-^{1} N^{6}$-benzylaminopurine, 100 mg$ l-^{1}$ kanamycin and 500 mg l? cefotaxime. The putative transgenic shoot buds elongated on basal selection medium and rooted efficiently on Soilrite irrigated with water containing 100 mg$ l-^{1} $kanamycin sulphate. Transgenic plants were raised in pots and seeds subsequently collected from mature fruits. Histochemical GUS assay and polymerase vchain reaction analysis of field-established transgenic plants and their offsprings confirmed the ...
Three tillage methods, conventional till, minimum till and deep till versus no till and their respective interaction with three fertilizer levels (0, lx and 2x the recommended amount) were evaluated in a crop rotation that included yam (.Dioscorea alata L.), eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and corn (Zea mays L.). The experiment was established at three ecologically different locations with three different soil orders: Ultisol, Oxisol and Vertisol. Yam, the first crop in the rotation, was planted after soil preparation according to the treatments. The crops that followed in the rotation were planted no till in the same plots. A fifth treatment, in which all crops in the rotation were planted under conventional tillage, was used as a check. Yield response of the rotation crops varied with location. Yam yields in the no till plots were significantly lower than in the conventional till plots in the Ultisol and Vertisol soils, but not in the Oxisol soil. Response to fertilizer
Generally, fruits and vegetables are very good source of natural antioxidants which consists of many different antioxidant components. Though there are many vegetables available in the markets with high antioxidant values and high mineral composition, most of them are very expensive. Hence as an alternative source of minerals and antioxidants the possibility of consuming conventional vegetables was taken into consideration in this study. The procedure was carried out to determine the antioxidant activity based on the inhibition of the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazil (DPPH) in ethanol extract of the okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.), beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.), brinjal (Solanum melongena L.), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), banana peppers (Capsicum annuum), green chili (Capsicum annuum L.), carrot (Daucus carota), yard long beans (Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). According to the results, okra had the ...

Downloadable! Brinjal, also known as eggplant and aubergine, is Bangladeshs third most important vegetable in terms of both yield and area cultivated. It is only surpassed by potatoes and onions. However, the yield of brinjal could be much higher would it not be decimated by the brinjal shoot and fruit borer, which is the most destructive insect pest in South and South East Asia. Genetically modified brinjal (Bt brinjal) has the potential to bump up agricultural productivity in Bangladesh and other countries. This paper provides a brief overview of Bangladeshs vegetable sector and reviews the key issues of introducing Bt brinjal in Bangladesh. It summarizes the results of recent research undertaken in Bangladesh on the environmental safety of Bt brinjal and concludes that Bt brinjal could make a significant contribution to Bangladeshs agricultural sector and more broadly, Bangladeshs economy and living standards.
Eggplant (Solanum melongena), or aubergine, is a species of nightshade grown for its edible fruit. Eggplant is the common name in North America and Australia, but British English uses the French word aubergine. It is known in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Africa as brinjal.. The fruit is widely used in cooking. As a member of the genus Solanum, it is related to the tomato and the potato. It was originally domesticated from the wild nightshade species, the thorn or bitter apple, S. incanum, probably with two independent domestications, one in South Asia and one in East Asia.. The eggplant is a delicate, tropical perennial often cultivated as a tender or half-hardy annual in temperate climates. The stem is often spiny. The flower is white to purple, with a five-lobed corolla and yellow stamens. The egg-shaped, glossy, purple fruit has white flesh with a meaty texture. The cut surface of the flesh rapidly turns brown when the fruit is cut open.. It grows 40 to 150 cm (1.3 to 4.9 ft) tall, ...

Very few phytopathogenic bacteria colonize intact plant roots, even if the local soil provides a favorable environment for bacterial growth. Penetration seems to be the limiting step, as most bacteria need natural openings or wounds to invade their hosts and there are few opportunities in roots (Loria et al., 2003). Ralstonia solanacearum, a gram-negative soil-borne pathogen responsible for bacterial wilt, naturally invades plants through axils of secondary roots. R. solanacearum has to attach to the root, find nutrients, multiply, migrate into plant tissues, and penetrate the xylem in order to cause disease (Vasse, 1995). It has a wide and still-expanding host range that includes several hundred susceptible species in at least 50 different plant families, which include economically important hosts such as potato (Solanum tuberosum), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), peanut (Arachis hypogaea), banana (Musa spp.), pepper (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and tobacco (Nicotiana ...

Solasodine, a naturally occurring aglycone of glycoalkaloid in eggplant (Solanum melongena), was found to inhibit proliferation in various tumor cells. However, the effect of solasodine on cancer cell metastasis remains unclear. This study investigates the suppression mechanism of solasodine on motility of human lung cancer cell A549 in vitro. Results show that solasodine reduces viability of A549 cells. Treatment with non-toxic doses of solasodine suppresses markedly cell invasion. Solasodine reduces the mRNA level of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9 and extracellular inducer of matrix metalloproteinase (EMMPRIN), but increases the expression of reversion-inducing cysteine-rich protein with kazal motifs (RECK), as well as tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and TIMP-2. Immunoblotting assays indicate that solasodine is effective in suppressing PI3K and Akt phosphorylation. Moreover, solasodine downregulates oncogenic microRNA-21 (miR-21), which has been known to target ...

Thrips-transmitted Iris yellow spot virus (genus Tospovirus, family Bunyaviridae) is an economically important pathogen of onion bulb and seed crops in the USA and other parts of the world (2,4). Studies on biological characteristics of the virus have been limited due to difficulties in obtaining consistent and reproducible mechanical transmission and lack of indicator hosts. The existence of strains of IYSV is not known though differences in symptomatology, disease severity, and yield losses could be attributed to the presence of different IYSV strains. To better understand the biological diversity of IYSV, several plant species were evaluated for their response to mechanical inoculation with IYSV under controlled greenhouse conditions. Seeds of Arabidopsis thaliana COL 1, Capsicum annuum (Serrano pepper), Cerastium glomeratum (mouse ear chickweed), Chenopodium quinoa, Datura innooxia, D. ferox, D. stramonium, Nicotiana benthamiana, N. tabacum, Solanum melongena (egg plant), and Vigna ...
I always grow enough, and enough variety, that I have the eggplants I need for just the dish I want to eat. Caponata, a bold Italian combination of eggplant, tomatoes, onion, capers, olive oil, and vinegar, looks much more vibrant with a white-skinned eggplant. Casper, White Beauty, White Sword, or any of the other white eggplants work well. Using purple-skinned eggplants can create a muddy effect.. Baba ghanoush, a grilled eggplant purée with sesame paste and garlic, and hunkar begendi, a roasted eggplant purée with kasseri cheese, also benefit from using white-skinned eggplant. The light color makes the purée more appealing and better shows off any garnishes.. Grilled eggplant steaks are best with firm-fleshed fruits 4 to 6 inches in diameter. They hold up on the grill and look substantial on the plate. These larger varieties are also best for papoutsakia, a classic Greek stuffed and baked eggplant dish. Musakka, baked eggplant with tomato, béchamel, and cheese, may be made with many ...

Update: On 9 February 2010, in response to the widespread concern expressed by the public and some scientists, Jairam Ramesh, Minister of Environment and Forests, announced an indefinite moratorium on the release of Bt-brinjal.. On 14 October 2009 an Indian governmental agency - the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), part of the Environment Ministry - gave its approval for the environmental release of Bt brinjal. [1] This means that the crop is considered safe for use in an open space, which includes planting on a commercial scale. Its decision followed lobbying by Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Ltd (Mahyco), Monsantos partner in India, which has been largely responsible for the development of Bt brinjal. Shortly before GEAC announced its decision, Mahycos managing director, Raju Barware, said on the companys website: We look forward to a positive decision because it will help millions of our brinjal farmers who have been suffering from the havoc caused by the brinjal fruit and ...
Farida Akhter ,, Thursday 27 February 2014 ,, SUBJECT: Btbrinjal & Corporate Politics On October 30, 2013 Bangladesh National Committee on Bio-safety (NCB) approved the application of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) for limited-scale cultivation and marketing of genetically modified eggplant, known as Bt Brinjal amid protests by environmental and farmers groups. The resistance against Bt Brinjal is increasing on issues related to serious threat to bio-safety and health. The authorities have failed to prove any agronomic value of the genetically engineered product and the claims are based on faulty methodology. The farmers are squarely resisting against patenting and explicit attempt of bio-piracy through technological manipulation. However, disregarding all these views, BARI claimed that Bt. brinjal has been developed in the public sector and will be distributed to the farmers by government agricultural institution. There are no technology fees or royalties payable on Bt ...
Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add onion and cook until softened.. Add garlic and continue cooking until fragrant, another minute or two, being careful not to burn it.. Add eggplant and cook over medium heat for about 15-20 minutes stirring frequently until eggplant is golden and cooked through. Eggplants absorb the oil like a sponge so you may need to drizzle more olive oil as the eggplant cooks.. Add the half of the mint-basil mixture, salt and pepper.. When the eggplant is almost ready add the tomatoes and stir.. When the eggplant is fully cooked, golden and delicious turn off the heat and set aside. Taste and add more salt as necessary.. Cook the pasta in plenty of boiling salted water. When pasta is cooked al dente drain and immediately add to the skillet with the eggplant mixture. Toss the pasta so it is coated with the eggplant and add the grated parmesan.. Pile onto plates, garnish with remaining basil and mint and serve with additional grated parmesan.. ...
In tropical and subtropical climates, eggplant can be sown directly into the garden. Eggplant grown in temperate climates fares better when transplanted into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Eggplant prefers hot weather, and when grown in cold climates or in areas with low humidity, the plants languish or fail to set and produce mature fruit.[30][31] Seeds are typically started eight to 10 weeks prior to the anticipated frost-free date. S. melongena is included on a list of low flammability plants, indicating that it is suitable for growing within a building protection zone.[32]. Spacing should be 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 in) between plants, depending on cultivar, and 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35 in) between rows, depending on the type of cultivation equipment being used. Mulching helps conserve moisture and prevent weeds and fungal diseases and the plants benefit from some shade during the hottest part of the day. Hand pollination by shaking the flowers improves the set of the first ...
3. Turn eggplants over and place in the pan, cut side up. Season with salt. Gently pull apart at the slit and fill with the onion, tomato and farro mix. Spoon any mix that couldnt fit inside the eggplant over the top. Mix remaining olive oil, remaining sugar, water and lemon juice. Drizzle over and around the eggplants. Cover the pan and place over low heat. Cook gently for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, basting from time to time with the liquid in the pan, and adding water to the pan if it becomes too dry (this shouldnt happen; in my experience, the eggplant releases water as it simmers). By the end of cooking, the eggplants should have collapsed significantly and the liquid in the pan should be syrupy or even slightly caramelized. Spoon this over the eggplant. Allow to cool in pan, sprinkle with parsley and serve at room temperature.. Yield: Serves 6. Advance preparation: This is best if made a day ahead. You can roast the eggplant through Step 1 and make the filling through Step 2 several hours before ...
Q: I have never known what to do with eggplant. Can you help?. A: Eggplant has a mild flavor that is enhanced by culinary herbs and other vegetables. When purchasing, look for a firm eggplant that is 6 to 8 inches long. Choose one with tender, smooth, glossy skin. Also, look for one that, when it is gently pressed, yields to the pressure but the dent disappears. Look for an eggplant with an oval, not round, dimple at the blossom end. Select one where the stem and cap are still greenish and fresh looking. Avoid eggplants that have hard flesh, as well as ones where the dent remains in the flesh after it is gently pressed, because it is likely to be brown and spongy inside, taste bitter, and have large tough seeds. Avoid those with a round dimple on the blossom end, since they may have more seeds and be spongier. Avoid eggplant that is dull, discolored, soft, shriveled or split. Avoid those with dark brown spots, which are a sign of decay.. Refrigerate unwashed eggplant in a perforated plastic bag ...
Q: I have essential high blood pressure, which means my pressure goes up and down without any discernible reason. One day I accidentally discovered the benefits of eggplant. A medium-size eggplant made a good supper browned in olive oil with a gravy. After consuming the entire eggplant, I took my blood pressure again. It had dropped quite a bit, from around 200 over 100 before I ate. When it got down to 80 over 50, I was beginning to wonder if I should go to the hospital, but I felt fine. The BP leveled off. When I searched the internet, I was stunned to find out that eggplant can lower BP! So now, in addition to my meds, if my pressure goes up, I eat a little eggplant. That works every time! A: Japanese researchers noted that eggplant is rich in acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter with an effect on blood pressure. When they conducted an experiment with hypertensive rats, they found that feeding them eggplant lowered their blood pressure (Food Chemistry, March 15, 2019). Other Japanese scientists have

Begomoviruses have emerged as serious problem for vegetable and fiber crops in the recent past, frequently in tropical and subtropical region of the world. The association of begomovirus with eggplant yellow mosaic disease is hitherto unknown apart from one report from Thailand. A survey in Nagpur, Central India, in 2009-2010 showed severe incidence of eggplant yellow mosaic disease. Here, we have identified and characterized a begomovirus responsible for the newly emerging yellow mosaic disease of eggplant in India. The complete DNA-A and DNA-B genomic components of the causative virus were cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide sequence analysis of DNA-A showed that it shared highest 97.6% identity with Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus-India[India:Udaipur:Okra:2007] and lowest 87.9% identity with Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus-India[India:NewDelhi:Papaya:2005], while DNA-B showed highest 94.1% identity with ToLCNDV-IN[IN:UD:Ok:07] and lowest 76.2% identity with ToLCNDV-India[India:Lucknow]. Thus, it
1. Preheat oven broiler. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Lay eggplant slices and asparagus on the sheet, not overlapping. Brush asparagus and both sides of the eggplant slices with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Broil for 7-8 minutes or until browned. Since asparagus cooks quickly, it may be cooked at this point and can be transferred to a plate. Flip eggplant slices, and broil another 4-5 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven ...
Cut each eggplant in half lengthways, then make criss cross cuts on the flesh nearly all the way down to the skin. Brush with olive oil, place in a lightly oiled baking pan and bake for 25 minutes or until soft. In the meantime, cook the pasta until al dente and toast the pine nuts on a non stick frying pan.Remove the eggplant from the oven and, using a spoon, scrape the flesh out of the skins and place in a bowl. Pour the extra virgin olive oil gradually mixing it with eggplant until you get to a smooth paste. Season it with fleur de sel and ...
A field experiment was conducted over two cropping seasons to investigate the effectiveness of cereal border crops in managing potato aphids and the associated viruses during seed potato production. Potato plots were surrounded with maize, sorghum or wheat borders. Aphid population was monitored on leaves and on yellow sticky traps. Other data collected included viral disease incidence and tuber yield. The border crops reduced aphid population on leaves compared to non-bordered potato plots. More alate aphids were caught on yellow sticky traps placed inside potato plots than on traps placed inside the border crops. In addition, viral disease incidence was reduced in all plots surrounded by the border crops. However, plots surrounded by border crops had reduced tuber yield, although the yield of seed grade was increased. Thus use of border crops is beneficial in management of viral diseases during seed potato production ...

In my own limited experience, it seems like there is no middle ground in fondness for eggplant. People either seem to love it or hate it, with no in between.. I dont remember ever eating it growing up. I recall my mom saying she didnt really like it, and it took a long time to prepare, so there was never any eggplant served in the Schultz house. My first taste of eggplant was about 13 years ago when I purchased a share of an organic farm, and each week I got a box filled with whatever was being harvested at the farm. I received plenty of eggplant that summer, and after experimenting with different recipes found that I really liked it.. Though lots of my friends were used to eating eggplant and I thought I was the only one who wasnt, overall Americans are not big consumers of eggplant. The USDA released statistics that show eggplant consumption in the U.S. to be less than one pound per person each year. Compare that with a more widely known and used commodity like tomatoes, which is consumed ...
Ralstonia solanacearum is a soil-borne beta-proteobacterium that causes bacterial wilt disease in many food crops and is a major problem for agriculture in intertropical regions. R. solanacearum is a heterogeneous species, both phenotypically and genetically, and is considered as a species complex. Pathogenicity of R. solanacearum relies on the Type III secretion system that injects Type III effector (T3E) proteins into plant cells. T3E collectively perturb host cell processes and modulate plant immunity to enable bacterial infection. We provide the catalogue of T3E in the R. solanacearum species complex, as well as candidates in newly sequenced strains. 94 T3E orthologous groups were defined on phylogenetic bases and ordered using a uniform nomenclature. This curated T3E catalog is available on a public website and a bioinformatic pipeline has been designed to rapidly predict T3E genes in newly sequenced strains. Systematical analyses were performed to detect lateral T3E gene transfer events and

In the study published now in the journal RNA Biology, led by researchers from the Center for Astrobiology (CAB, CSIC-INTA), it has been used, as indicated by Miguel Moreno (researcher of the CAB and first signatory of the work) a tool of nanotechnology that allows us to obtain 3D images of individual RNA molecules in native conditions and without the need to mark them or coat them with any substance, as we showed for a different biological system together with Luis Vázquez (from the ICMM) and other collaborators in a previous article: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) . In this way, for the first time, the structure of three different viroids, PSTVd, and two species belonging to the Avsunviroidae family were able to be visualized and analyzed at nanoscale resolution: the viroid of the latent peach mosaic (PLMVd) and the latent viroid of the Eggplant (ELVd ...
The sauce is a manner of personal taste, of course, but here is what I do. First, put a big pot of salted water on to boil. Itll take longer than you think, and the sauce happens pretty quickly. Dice an onion, and chop up 2 cloves of garlic. Put the onion in the bowl that held the herby oil mixture, because that way the flavors from the eggplant will be echoed in the sauce. Toss the onion bits around, and then put them in a saute pan with a tablespoon or 2 of oil. Sprinkle with salt, and cook on medium-low heat until the onions start releasing their liquid. Then, add in the garlic, and some tomato paste. Stir to combine, and once the tomato paste has cooked for a few minutes, add the can of tomatoes and smash with a masher. You COULD use crushed tomatoes, but I prefer the whole ones for this situation. Season with a little salt and pepper, but be careful because tomato paste is salty. Let simmer while youre staring at your watch waiting for the pasta water to boil, stir frequently so the sauce ...

Ive never been a fan of potato french fries. Im actually not a fan of potatoes in general, with the exception of the occasional sweet potato. I decided that I wanted to make a healthy french fry alternative with a purpose. No oils, frying, or heavy starchy ingredients here! These healthy eggplant fries are baked to perfection in a crispy golden flax-almond breading. Now I know what half of you are thinking. Ewwwww eggplant! I think a lot of my friends are turned off by the mushy texture of cooked eggplant, but trust me this is totally different! Even if you HATE eggplant, I am almost positive you will love these fries! You have to give them a try, pretty pretty please! Of course if youre super anti-eggplant, zucchini would be a great alternative as well.. Theyre perfectly crispy, delicious, and nutritious! ...

Advance preparation: As with many of our soups, the flavors become better and more complex if the soup is made several days ahead of time and given a day of rest in the refrigerator.. Variations: You can substitute regular hard neck garlic for the elephant garlic, but the final soup will have a slightly sharper and more pungent flavor. This soup can be served hot or cold. Cream can be added, but we feel this puréed soup already has a creamlike consistency and richness without added fat. The eggplant and basil add an herbal smokiness that balances the sweetness and creaminess of the garlic.. Beverage pairing: The rich roasted sweetness and creaminess of the roasted garlic requires a wine with similar characteristics and a kiss of oak. Recommended: 2000 Adea Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon; or 2000 White Rock Organic Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California.. A light- to medium-bodied white, such as an Arneis from Piemonte with its notes of pear, almonds, and delicate herbs, would complement the ...

Destructive effects of conventional insecticides on environment have created a necessity to introduce bio-rational products in pest control programs. Effectiveness of bio-pesticide (Beauvaria bassiana), natural oil (anti-insect), a botanical extract (nimbecidine) and malathion insecticide was evaluated against Thrips spp. and Bemisia tabaci attacking tomato in Kafr El Sheik, Egypt. The trial was conducted during two successive seasons; 2017-18 in a total area of 4912 m2 cultivated with tomato cultivar zero 42. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with five replications for each treatment. Yellow sticky traps were used to monitor population of both pests before and after spraying, in addition, their numbers on plants were counted. Results revealed that highest control rates of both pests were recorded after the fourth day of each spraying. Long inter-applications periods decreased effectiveness and the greatest control resulted when three consecutive
These two pests will destroy plants if given the chance. (Read more about these pests here.) To reduce populations, clean old plant debris in fall (where these pests overwinter), till beds in spring, and plant eggplant in late spring to early summer to avoid spring hatches of this pest. Spraying with insecticidal soap or pyrethrin sprays will kill adult beetles and protect plants from summer damage.. Striped Colorado potato beetles lay masses of yellow eggs on the undersides of eggplant leaves in spring. Brownish orange larvae emerge that aggressively feed on leaves. 6. Scouting and insect monitoring. Even after implementing all the previous exclusion techniques, some insects will certainly get inside the greenhouse. Early detection of pests in the crop is crucial. Use pest monitoring tools and techniques like yellow sticky traps, plant scouting and examining plants with a hand lens to make early detection of pests. Usually a pest infestation is location specific. For instance, hot spots of pests near ventilation or doorway openings are common. Another common discovery is insects coming into the greenhouse on infested plants from other areas. If you purchase transplants, consider all factors related to the source of plants that can increase pest problems. For example, determine if the transplant growing facility is in an area where pest populations are high and if the growers implementing good IPM practices. 7. Control strategies. If pest populations build to a threshold level requiring a control measure, growers must be prepared to implement a control plan ...
Exporter of Pheromone Traps - Barrix Catch Fruit Fly Trap, Barrix Catch Vegetable Fly Trap, Barrix Magic Yellow Sticky Trap offered by Sumukha Farm Products Private Limited, Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
We had more success with the Scentry lures than the Trécé lures, and the yellow sticky traps appear to have better results than the red traps.. We also found these sticky cards much faster to use, SWD can be identified in the field, and the traps did not require the same amount of labour and maintenance the liquid traps did. We are continuing our project in 2019 to further evaluate these different trap-lure combinations and gain experience with using different lures.. 2019 Grower participatory survey. Monitoring is important for growers to do on their own farm. Every year SWD emerges at a different time and emergence is very challenging to predict. By monitoring on their own farm growers can ID SWD and begin a spray program before the population rises, or growers can hold off on spraying for 1-2 weeks and save these limited sprays for the end of the season.. This season we are hoping to conduct a grower participatory SWD survey with growers across the province, using this lure + sticky card ...

Obviously, I lacked many of these virtues. For example, I loved onions and garlic, though even without these I loved to eat fish and meat. As for redish and eggplant, white redish and white eggplant didnt taste even the tenth of what red redish and black eggplant tasted. And then, I was not tidy in my habits (room # 100 was notorious even among my well-wishers for its messiness); I advocated unconventional mores and violation of dietary habits (you must understand that Indians had already killed thousands of human beings in the name of pigs and cows; so I said why not eat garlic and chicken and what have you--and, yes, pigs and calves, too, if you so wish; a few years later they would have the biggest killing of this kind in which two of my friends, one a body builder Muslim and the other a very stylish, polite, and gentle high caste Hindu would be butchered; the Muslim would be speared to death at a crossroad in broad daylight and the Hindu would be kidnapped and his body parts strewn along ...
fresh coriander. Method. First, the eggplants - leave them whole and char the skins to get that smokey flavour. I recommend doing this on the barbecue if you can because doing it inside is messy and smokey. If you have to do it inside do it directly over the gas flame on the stove, or as a last resort under the griller*. They should be soft and cooked on the inside and blackened on the outside when done. Pop aside in a bowl until theyre cool enough to handle then peel the skin off and discard. When youre peeling the eggplants try to keep any juice that runs out of them. Mash the eggplant a bit with a fork.. Heat the oil and the mustard together in a wide, high sided pan, stirring as it heats. When the oil is hot and the mustard seeds start popping get the onions in ASAP, otherwise you and your kitchen will be covered in boiling hot, exploding mustard seeds. Cook onions at a medium/medium high heat until theyre browning but not in danger of burning - about 10 minutes - then add the ginger and ...

As the nation battles to contain the COVI19 emergency, the livelihoods of the most vulnerable local communities have started collapsing. Odisha faced two cyclones last year and the local economy was slowly reviving when COVID19 struck.. Take the case of Samira Mallick of Nagaripada village in Garadapur block of Kendrapada district, who ekes out his living by growing vegetables. Samira, 47 is a Dalit by caste and has a small landholding of 1.5 acres. He used to earn Rs 2000 from sale of tomatoes (@ Rs 20 a kg) and Rs 1100 (@Rs 15 a kg) from brinjals every week. Just before the lockdown, Samira used sell about a quintal of tomatoes and brinjal.. But today, the local vegetable market is only open from 6 am to 10 am in the morning. During this time, he can only sell half the produce. Because of the fear of Corona and the police, people fear coming to the market, and there are no storage facilities to keep the vegetables. As a result, the price of vegetables has dropped drastically to Rs 7 and Rs 5 ...
