The Pharmaceutical Society NI is inviting comments on draft guidance for registrants on the statutory requirement to have appropriate indemnity cover as a condition of registration. This means that in order to be registered with the Pharmaceutical Society NI, pharmacists will be expected to have appropriate indemnity arrangements in place.. This statutory requirement was introduced by the Northern Ireland Assembly in November 2013. This was necessary in order to comply with EU legislation.. The DHSSPS is currently consulting on enabling regulations to support the introduction of this statutory requirement. We have produced this guidance in preparation for this statutory requirement, which subject to legislative approval, will come into effect on 1 June 2014.. Trevor Patterson, Chief Executive said. We consider that most registrants will already be able to meet this statutory requirement as they will be indemnified by their employer and/or will hold separate indemnity insurance.. Making ...

The same meta-analysis found that the frequency of having immunogenicity differed among diseases as well. For example, antidrug antibodies developed in about 14% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in 25% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in 7% among patients with ankylosing spondylitis. "There are huge differences in the relative risk of having an antidrug antibody," said Dr. Furst, director of research for Arthritis Associates of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also noted that the rate of drug response among patients who develop antidrug antibodies is decreased by about 50%. "So if you have the antibodies, it really makes a difference," he said. "That differs by drug, and it differs by disease.". One approach to circumventing the impact of antidrug antibodies on clinical response is by using immunosuppression, which in the meta-analysis had a 70% probability for decreasing antidrug antibodies. But this approach comes with a hitch, Dr. Furst said. The effect of ...

Yellow school buses, the smell of sharpened pencils and last minute back-to-school eye exams for the kiddos are all signs that autumn is upon us. As optometrists, we are very good about promoting that a full, comprehensive eye exam is essential for children to ensure they start the school year off right, but what about us? September could also serve as a reminder to ourselves that despite our 20 years of schooling, we, too, have more to learn. We need continuing education credits to prove that we are staying on top of our game and setting ourselves up for another great year of caring for the vision of our patients. We need to remain knowledgeable of the latest methods, treatments and technologies available.. Now, I have sometimes overheard mumbles from other ODs implying, "If you do not complete the required amount of continuing education credits in time, do not sweat it because the powers that be rarely check." Well, take it from someone who was randomly selected to be audited-me-they check, ...

Medication non-adherence has a significant impact on patients morbidity and mortality. Behavioral interventions have been developed to improve medication adherence. Adherence research requires an understanding about the best methodology to conduct studies especially when assessing interventions. Adherence studies include various designs such as: randomized controlled clinical trials, observational, and quasi-experimental studies. The Medication Adherence and Persistence Special Interest Group will develop good research practice recommendations for the conduct of medication adherence and treatment persistence research studies and will provide insight, through systematic reviews of the medication adherence literature, on interventions that improve medication adherence.. ...
and caused significant nausea and vomiting (1). Plan B is much safer and easier to take, which led to its being made available without a prescription, but with pharmacist counseling, in Canada in 2000.. Because some pharmacists wrongly believed that Plan B caused abortion, or because pharmacists with counseling training were commonly unavailable, other women, like yourself, have reported difficulty obtaining it (2). The controversy over a news/feature article describing this "hassle" in the Canadian Medical Association Journal led eventually to the firing of the Editor and Associate Editor and eventually to the total restructuring of our major Canadian general medical journal. It also raised real concerns about undue influence of the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association on freedom of scientific publication. Interestingly, a parallel issue occurred in the U.S.A. where two different scientific panels independently approved Plan B for over-the-counter use, but ...
The Pakistani pharmaceutical industry has backed plans to set up a reference pricing system. Industry officials say the model - which is based on prices in countries similar to Pakistan - is the most transparent and fair of the three options presented by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).. DRAP has reportedly met with industry groups to discuss a pricing policy that the Sindh High Court wants to have finalized as soon as possible. Pharmaceutical manufacturers - particularly multinational businesses - have criticized the current situation for being inconsistent and too reliant on interim agreements. Representatives of multinational trade group Pharma Bureau told the pricing panel the situation is driving companies out of Pakistan, the news organization DAWN reports.. Pharma Bureau, Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) and Pakistan Chemists and Druggists Association (PCDA) all backed a move to reference pricing, although each has different concerns with the ...
How Algorithms Shape Our World-TED Talks Kevin Slavin-Writing the Unreadable And A Good Reason to Get Into the Math This is a very good presentation done a TED Conference and really was the one that got everyone started thinking about algorithms and today its talked about a lot. As he says "if youre an algorithm, life is looking pretty good, but cant say the same for humans". What is a black box? Nobody has any control over the flash crash. We have moved forward a bit but still we are writing the unreadable and lost the sense of some of what is happening. Nice plug for Nanex here with research. ...
GlaxoSmithKline, a leading drugs manufacturer, was last week forced to admit that paroxetine, a widely prescribed antidepressant and the companys best selling drug, can cause severe withdrawal symptoms when stopped. The Food and Drug Administration in the United States published a new product warning about the drug, and in the same week the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations declared the company guilty of misleading the public about paroxetine on US television a year ago. "This drug has been promoted for years as safe and easy to discontinue," said Charles Medawar, head of Social Audit, a consumer research group specialising in medicines policy. "The fact that it can cause intolerable withdrawal symptoms of the kind that could lead to dependence is enormously important to patients, doctors, investors, and the company. "GlaxoSmithKline has evaded the issue since it was granted a licence for paroxetine over 10 years ago, and the drug has become a blockbuster for ...

That morning in September 11, 2001, The Office of New Drug Chemistry, Center of New Drugs had a joint meeting with representatives of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PHARMA) at the Hilton Hotel in Gaithersburg, MD. At about 9:20AM, we received an announcement that the meeting is canceled and we can go home, since the World Trade Center in New York was burning. All of the attendees went to the hotel lobby and the TV was announcing the news. I felt sick, depressed but helpless to see the burning WTC building((see photo above). Later, I learned that the Pentagon in Washington DC was also bombed and another plane crashed in the field somewhere in Southern Pennsylvania. Later I also found out that this United Airline plane was intended for the White House. Had it not been for the courageous heroics of several passengers, the White House would have suffered the same fate as the World Trade Center and the Pentagon ...

Many potential therapeutics fail to make it to the clinic due to undesirable side effects caused by off-target interactions. This is particularly true for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), a class of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels. The nAChR subtypes share considerable structural and sequence identity with each other and with related receptors. To address this difficulty we have utilized the acetylcholine binding proteins (AChBPs) as surrogates of the receptor ligand binding domain (LBD). We have demonstrated these soluble pentameric proteins share considerable homology with human nAChRs and ...

Do you know that Amplicox, flagyl, even septrin are all POM (prescription only medcines) as in u need to get prescription from a dr b4 u can buy them. If u have ever walked into a drug store and gotten any pom without prescription then u are not less guilty than the boys that killed cynthia (for de purchase part) the diff btw u and dem is what u used urs for,and any drug at very high dose is a very potent poison. Old ppl come to de pharmacy and buy lexotan or valium 5 for lack of sleep. And these drug are same family to rophynol and can de same as rophynol. Am not trying to support de sales without prescription but in nigeria the drug system is in a state of chaos. Ppl would rather consult their community pharmacist than visit a hospital cos its cheaper, its more community based and accesible than visiting a hospital with all de protocol and heavy bills for less. 8 November 2005 - The Sun). The pharmaceutical industry is changing with the times, influenced by economic pressures and rapid technological advancements. As pharmaceutical companies consolidate to offer different drugs and solutions, this has also brought about change in the skills required of pharmacists.. Recent studies have highlighted a growing gap between the graduate output from universities and industry requirements. Owing to the way in which the industry is beginning to operate, a multidisciplinary approach to training is needed, especially in emerging areas such as biotechnology and bioinformatics.. The University of Sunderland offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacology programmes, taught by first-rate educators and which directly address the needs of the industry, healthcare and the environment.. The early stage of the four-year MPharm programme covers the basic sciences, with more emphasis on patients and their reaction to medication as the course progresses. ...
