This means that in order to be registered with the Pharmaceutical Society NI, pharmacists will be expected to have appropriate indemnity arrangements in place.. This statutory requirement was introduced by the Northern Ireland Assembly in November 2013. This was necessary in order to comply with EU legislation.. The DHSSPS is currently consulting on enabling regulations to support the introduction of this statutory requirement. We have produced this guidance in preparation for this statutory requirement, which subject to legislative approval, will come into effect on 1 June 2014.. Trevor Patterson, Chief Executive said. We consider that most registrants will already be able to meet this statutory requirement as they will be indemnified by their employer and/or will hold separate indemnity insurance.. Making ...

The Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand, along with members of the Aotearoa New Zealand Equally Well collaborative, are urgently requesting that Pharmac reconsiders its decision to exclude people living with mental health and addiction issues from the eligibility criteria for funded influenza vaccines.. The underpinning principle of funded influenza vaccines are that they are free for people who are most likely to get very sick or be hospitalised if they catch influenza.. Yet despite the evidence of the much higher rates of physical illnesses and poorer physical health outcomes of people with mental health and addiction issues, this group continue to be excluded.. read more ≻. ...

The same meta-analysis found that the frequency of having immunogenicity differed among diseases as well. For example, antidrug antibodies developed in about 14% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in 25% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in 7% among patients with ankylosing spondylitis. There are huge differences in the relative risk of having an antidrug antibody, said Dr. Furst, director of research for Arthritis Associates of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also noted that the rate of drug response among patients who develop antidrug antibodies is decreased by about 50%. So if you have the antibodies, it really makes a difference, he said. That differs by drug, and it differs by disease.. One approach to circumventing the impact of antidrug antibodies on clinical response is by using immunosuppression, which in the meta-analysis had a 70% probability for decreasing antidrug antibodies. But this approach comes with a hitch, Dr. Furst said. The effect of ...

Yellow school buses, the smell of sharpened pencils and last minute back-to-school eye exams for the kiddos are all signs that autumn is upon us. As optometrists, we are very good about promoting that a full, comprehensive eye exam is essential for children to ensure they start the school year off right, but what about us? September could also serve as a reminder to ourselves that despite our 20 years of schooling, we, too, have more to learn. We need continuing education credits to prove that we are staying on top of our game and setting ourselves up for another great year of caring for the vision of our patients. We need to remain knowledgeable of the latest methods, treatments and technologies available.. Now, I have sometimes overheard mumbles from other ODs implying, If you do not complete the required amount of continuing education credits in time, do not sweat it because the powers that be rarely check. Well, take it from someone who was randomly selected to be audited-me-they check, ...

Immunometabolism is an emerging and exciting field that investigates the interaction between metabolic and immunological processes. This field has seen tremendous progress in the last decade with major breakthroughs that revealed metabolic links to lymphocyte activation and differentiation and cell fate decisions. These findings have set new paradigms in the field of immunology, and harnessing metabolic checkpoints is speculated to be at the centre of future immunotherapies. In addition to immune cell intrinsic metabolic processes, metabolites derived from gut microbiome shape the immune cell landscape, highlighting the link between diet, microbiome and immunity. Immune cells themselves on the other hand play a key role in regulating organismal metabolism. Given the breadth of this dynamic field and its exponential growth, synergy between research groups is crucial to advance immunometabolism research in Australasia. The vision of this special interest group (SIG) is to provide a platform for ...

There is a growing need for effective medication management services to optimise medication use, especially in primary care to keep patients well in the community.
Carried out over a period of more than 25 years, Dr. Raths scientific research work has proven that coronary heart disease occurs for precisely the same reason that clinical (early) scurvy does - a deficiency of vitamin C in the cells composing the artery wall. Unlike animals, humans develop heart disease because their bodies cannot produce vitamin C. While the average human diet provides enough of it to prevent scurvy, this is not enough to guarantee stable artery walls. As a consequence of the constant pumping action of the heart and an insufficient supply of vitamin C, millions of tiny cracks and lesions therefore develop in the artery walls. Subsequently cholesterol, lipoproteins, and other risk factors enter to repair this damage.. Of all these risk factors, by far the most important is a molecule known as Lipoprotein(a). Primarily found in humans and sub-human primates, Lipoprotein(a) functions as a repair molecule compensating for the structural impairment of the vascular wall. In ...

This pill tile, dated 1686, belonged to the Apothecary John Smithies who was made free of the Society that year. The arms and motto demonstrate his affiliation to the Society. Although pill tiles were used for rolling and cutting pills, they were normally hung or displayed in apothecaries shops). The Societys commercial activities developed from the Laboratory Stock (1672). The Navy Stock followed soon afterwards (1703). Originally, the Apothecaries clients were members of the Society but, before long, the Navy, the Army, the East India Company and the Crown Colonies had become lucrative customers. As business boomed during the eighteenth century the Trades premises at the Hall expanded and included laboratories, a mill house and a still house, mortar, magnesia and gas rooms, warehouses, packing rooms and shops.. ...

Dear members of the ASRA community,. I wanted to highlight the utility of the work done by Drs. Van de Putte and Perlas on the use of gastric ultrasound to assess the gastric volume, which recently altered my anesthetic induction plan. In this case, an obese female of middle age, who suffered from a motor vehicle accident 24 hours prior, was scheduled for pelvic fracture fixation surgery. The patient also sustained a cervical fracture (C1-2) and her cervical collar was recommended by the neurosurgical team to be kept on at all times. This patient definitely had a higher risk of aspiration of gastric contents, with gastric dysmotility due to her recent accident, pain, and the use of opioids for pain management. Awake intubation would have been the most conservative approach. though the patient was exceedingly anxious about the prospect. In order to decide upon the true necessity of awake intubation, we performed a gastric ultrasound. We were able to identify the gastric antrum in her case and ...

Risk and benefit are both associated with technology transfer, which includes, among other aspects, establishing bio-analytical methods, process development, and manufacturing to support biologics. The first step usually is for the sponsor company to transfer bioanalytical methods in order to qualify its contract organization to perform the analytical procedure, according to Shi.. Successful transfer requires a lot of people skills, he explains. Its a lot of communication management of technology styles - you have to predict where to control and plan. There are a lot of things jeopardized here. You need people who have expertise in different specialized areas - technical, project management, statistical, business development, laboratory standards compliance. They all have their special knowledge they combine together to handle the whole project.. When it comes time to take the exam for your home study course, you should obviously study as much as you can to guarantee the best chances of success. But sometimes you can study and still do poorly on an exam-and its not because youre a bad student. Many people are simply not good at taking tests, and this is often due to anxiety, a lack of familiarity with test-taking skills or both.. Although most tests dont feature authentic trick questions, certain types of exams, such as true/false and multiple choice, can be difficult to answer if you arent aware of the common strategies used by instructors to make the questions more challenging. Similarly, if you suffer from test-taking anxiety and fail to adequately address your nervousness, youll be more likely to make careless errors, fail to recall what youve memorized and/or not finish the test within the required time period.. Fortunately, there are several easy ways to minimize test-taking anxiety and prepare for even the most challenging ...
The Generic Pharmaceutical Association, an industry trade group, sent letters to members of the House and Senate outlining six ways to increase use of generic drugs, which it said would save money: Encourage generic drug use for the Medicare Low Income Subsidy population; close loopholes in the current REMS strategy; pass policy prohibition against state-level carve-out laws that restrict use of certain generics; integrate incentives for generic use and adherence in chronic management reforms; restrict the exclusivity for biotech drugs from 12 years to seven; and increase Medicaid payments to states that increase the use of the least costly drugs available.. So many ways to cut costs require enormous sacrifice, GPhA president and CEO Ralph Neas said. But generics have proven that drug-cost reductions are available while maintaining safety, efficacy and improved health outcomes. We can offer patients quality, FDA-approved medicines at a fraction of the price and save billions in the ...

Legislators are stepping up the pressure in the long running saga of getting generic versions of biotech drugs to market. The FDA approves generic versions of pharmaceutical (small molecule) drugs once the patents for brand-name products expire. But complex biotech drugs do not have such an approval process.. Representative Henry Waxman and Senator Orrin Hatch gave a talk to the Generic Pharmaceutical Association on the need for legislation that would balance the interests of generic drug makers and brand-name manufacturers who shoulder staggering drug development costs. Waxman said he plans to introduce a bill to spur the U.S. Food and Drug Administration into action on the long-overdue FDA guidelines for manufacturers to follow to produce generic versions of biotechnology drugs. Hatch, on the other hand, said that the issue is too important to try to pass before the Senate recess, expected at the end of next week. Also see the letter that Hatch and Waxman sent to the FDA earlier this ...
The Generic Pharmaceutical Association sent a letter to President Barack Obama Tuesday saying that provisions relating to intellectual property rights for biotech drugs should not be included in the TPP, a proposed regional trade agreement for the Asia-Pacific region.. The GPhA noted that while implementation of a regulatory approval pathway for biosimilars is ongoing at the Food and Drug Administration, significant disagreement remains about how the law should be implemented and whether further legislation is necessary.. Given your administrations position and the uncertainty surrounding the pathways implementation by [the] FDA, as well as the critical need to ensure access to safe and affordable medicines in global markets, it is premature to include provisions relating to biologics in any trade agreement, GPhA executive director Bob Billings wrote in the letter.. ...
