The Pharmaceutical Society NI is inviting comments on draft guidance for registrants on the statutory requirement to have appropriate indemnity cover as a condition of registration. This means that in order to be registered with the Pharmaceutical Society NI, pharmacists will be expected to have appropriate indemnity arrangements in place.. This statutory requirement was introduced by the Northern Ireland Assembly in November 2013. This was necessary in order to comply with EU legislation.. The DHSSPS is currently consulting on enabling regulations to support the introduction of this statutory requirement. We have produced this guidance in preparation for this statutory requirement, which subject to legislative approval, will come into effect on 1 June 2014.. Trevor Patterson, Chief Executive said. The Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand, along with members of the Aotearoa New Zealand Equally Well collaborative, are urgently requesting that Pharmac reconsiders its decision to exclude people living with mental health and addiction issues from the eligibility criteria for funded influenza vaccines.. The underpinning principle of funded influenza vaccines are that they are free for people who are most likely to get very sick or be hospitalised if they catch influenza.. Yet despite the evidence of the much higher rates of physical illnesses and poorer physical health outcomes of people with mental health and addiction issues, this group continue to be excluded.. read more ≻. ...

The same meta-analysis found that the frequency of having immunogenicity differed among diseases as well. For example, antidrug antibodies developed in about 14% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in 25% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in 7% among patients with ankylosing spondylitis. There are huge differences in the relative risk of having an antidrug antibody, said Dr. Furst, director of research for Arthritis Associates of Southern California in Los Angeles. He also noted that the rate of drug response among patients who develop antidrug antibodies is decreased by about 50%. So if you have the antibodies, it really makes a difference, he said. That differs by drug, and it differs by disease.. One approach to circumventing the impact of antidrug antibodies on clinical response is by using immunosuppression, which in the meta-analysis had a 70% probability for decreasing antidrug antibodies. But this approach comes with a hitch, Dr. Furst said. The effect of ...

Yellow school buses, the smell of sharpened pencils and last minute back-to-school eye exams for the kiddos are all signs that autumn is upon us. As optometrists, we are very good about promoting that a full, comprehensive eye exam is essential for children to ensure they start the school year off right, but what about us? September could also serve as a reminder to ourselves that despite our 20 years of schooling, we, too, have more to learn. We need continuing education credits to prove that we are staying on top of our game and setting ourselves up for another great year of caring for the vision of our patients. We need to remain knowledgeable of the latest methods, treatments and technologies available.. Now, I have sometimes overheard mumbles from other ODs implying, If you do not complete the required amount of continuing education credits in time, do not sweat it because the powers that be rarely check. Well, take it from someone who was randomly selected to be audited-me-they check, ...

Carried out over a period of more than 25 years, Dr. Raths scientific research work has proven that coronary heart disease occurs for precisely the same reason that clinical (early) scurvy does - a deficiency of vitamin C in the cells composing the artery wall. Unlike animals, humans develop heart disease because their bodies cannot produce vitamin C. While the average human diet provides enough of it to prevent scurvy, this is not enough to guarantee stable artery walls. As a consequence of the constant pumping action of the heart and an insufficient supply of vitamin C, millions of tiny cracks and lesions therefore develop in the artery walls. Subsequently cholesterol, lipoproteins, and other risk factors enter to repair this damage.. Of all these risk factors, by far the most important is a molecule known as Lipoprotein(a). Primarily found in humans and sub-human primates, Lipoprotein(a) functions as a repair molecule compensating for the structural impairment of the vascular wall. In ...

This pill tile, dated 1686, belonged to the Apothecary John Smithies who was made free of the Society that year. The arms and motto demonstrate his affiliation to the Society. Although pill tiles were used for rolling and cutting pills, they were normally hung or displayed in apothecaries shops). The Societys commercial activities developed from the Laboratory Stock (1672). The Navy Stock followed soon afterwards (1703). Originally, the Apothecaries clients were members of the Society but, before long, the Navy, the Army, the East India Company and the Crown Colonies had become lucrative customers. As business boomed during the eighteenth century the Trades premises at the Hall expanded and included laboratories, a mill house and a still house, mortar, magnesia and gas rooms, warehouses, packing rooms and shops.. ...

A recent article in November 2009 issue Pharmacotherapy summarizes the recommendations from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Infections Diseases Society of America, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists on the monitoring of vancomycin in adults.. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists published a consensus statement on therapeutic monitoring of serum vancomycin levels in adults. These organizations established an expert panel to review the scientific data and controversies associated with vancomycin monitoring and to make recommendations based on the available evidence. As the members of this panel, we summarize the conclusions and highlight the recommendations from the consensus statement. We determined that the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC):minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio is the most useful pharmacodynamic parameter to ...

Dear members of the ASRA community,. I wanted to highlight the utility of the work done by Drs. Van de Putte and Perlas on the use of gastric ultrasound to assess the gastric volume, which recently altered my anesthetic induction plan. In this case, an obese female of middle age, who suffered from a motor vehicle accident 24 hours prior, was scheduled for pelvic fracture fixation surgery. The patient also sustained a cervical fracture (C1-2) and her cervical collar was recommended by the neurosurgical team to be kept on at all times. This patient definitely had a higher risk of aspiration of gastric contents, with gastric dysmotility due to her recent accident, pain, and the use of opioids for pain management. Awake intubation would have been the most conservative approach. though the patient was exceedingly anxious about the prospect. In order to decide upon the true necessity of awake intubation, we performed a gastric ultrasound. We were able to identify the gastric antrum in her case and ...
