As the health care debate grows louder, a critical voice has yet to be heard. Last month, President Barack Obama took the first step toward reforming the American health care system by convening a White House summit that brought together many of the top stakeholders in the health care community. An excellent start, to be sure, but there was a conspicuous absence at the summit - out of the 80 organizations present, not one represented dentistry.[IMGCAP(1)]. The American Dental Education Association strongly supports the president in his efforts to build a more equitable, cost-effective and robust American health care system - but any comprehensive reform of the U.S. health care system should provide universal coverage of and access to high-quality, cost-effective dental services for all Americans.. Oral health is often ignored or overlooked in the debate over health care reform, despite the fact that, as former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop noted, You are not healthy without good oral health.- ...

Martin County Commission faces brush with fluoride questionBy GEORGE ANDREASSI [email protected] November 19, 2006STUART - Fearful the Martin County Commission may cave in to a group opposing the addition of fluoride to the countys drinking water, several local dental and health professionals said they plan to tell the commissioners about its importance in preventing tooth decay. We feel very strongly its of enormous benefit to the community, said Dr. Radamee Orlandi of Jensen Beach, president of the Treasure Coast Dental Society. Its safety is well known. Children who rely on public dental care in Martin County have twice as much tooth decay as those in St. Lucie and Indian River counties, where the drinking water is supplemented with therapeutic amounts of flouride, several local dental and health professionals said. Thats why the countys Oral Health Task Force pushed for the addition of fluoride to the countys water system in 2003 and the County Commission agreed, they ...

Though in command of both these men Vershinin (William Houston) seems to live in another world altogether. Oddly, I havent knowingly seen Houston in anything since the RSC Troilus and Cressida from 99. Ive seen him mentioned in dispatches from more recent outings at Stratford in the past decade, though, and he now sounds like hes spent ten years soaking in a vat of that companys Voice Department. As such, Vershinin runs closest to doing a bunch of stuff that Im really not over-keen on actors doing. There was a point where I realised that the performance was irresistably reminding me of Douglas Renholm from The IT Crowd. And once thought, it was a hard image to displace. However, at the same time, it doesnt just feel like an actor in a different production. You get the sense that he could easily do it different, and instead, the great big, amazing, old-school, Olivier voice is a character choice for Houston the actor. Theres something about the big oaky disconnect between life as it is ...

Dental sleep medicine focuses on the use of oral appliances to treat sleep-disordered breathing, includes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These customized sleep apnea oral appliances are made by dentists using a plastic-like mold according to the specific shape of the patients mouth and teeth. They not only work on against the sleep apnea but also effective stop snoring. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious disorder in which breathing starts and stops repeatedly. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after having a full nights sleep, you might have sleep apnea. ...
I was amazed how many patients have OSA and needed OAT. Dental Sleep Medicine was starting to become a daily part of my dental practice. I now was medically treating OSA patients and not just making snore appliances. Every patient had a diagnostic sleep study before and after OAT with their oral appliance in place to check the efficacy and effectiveness of their oral appliance. The more patients I treated, the more referrals I was getting from these happy patients. I learned marketing strategies from SGS, and after a year I had a dedicated dental sleep website and started a marketing campaign to attract patients outside my office for dental sleep medicine and OAT. I was always documenting my patients results and I was getting some good to great results. It was around this same time and having treated over sixty to seventy patients, I felt it was time to nurture relationships with sleep physicians, cardiologists and primary care physicians. I would never recommend this to someone who does not ...

Studies, recommendations, allies and liabilities all play a part in creating the information available when trying to get answers to the many questions surrounding TMJ.. Some studies are designed to follow a single-symptom, linear progression protocols, which means the study is not able to follow a new symptom even if the change is of problem progression. Therefore, the self-help suggestions should be used for no more than a week before consulting a Board Certified TMJ/Dental Sleep Medicine Dentist. The common recommendation through most dental websites including the ADA and TMJ Association are no longer supported by research, despite their claims. There is a detailed reason why they say research supports TMJ as a self-limiting condition and that it resolves without treatment. They advise not to do anything but self-help and medications, counseling, rest; because it is a self-limiting disorder [1]. (read below). As a Board-Certified Specialist in both Dental Sleep Medicine and Orofacial ...

Some have worked part-time in an area related to health or medicine. Many have shadowed a physician or other health care professional to gain a better appreciation of their daily life. Getting old is not for sissies. One of the many challenges facing our growing senior population is how do we keep our teeth and gums healthy through our golden years? When we retire and lose our health insurance, Medicare is there to pick up the slack for medical issues. But basic Medicare does not cover dental issues. In addition, as we age, our salivary glands slow down making us more susceptible to tooth decay. So how do we keep our teeth and gums dentally healthy on a limited retiree budget?. The Huffington Post posted a good blog on the subject today. In it, they discuss options including Medicare Advantage (Part C), Veterans benefits, and dental schools as options. For those on low income, they recommend contacting your local dental society, or checking with the Dental Lifeline Network which provides free dental care for low-income elderly and disabled, or look for a privately funded free clinic.. Of course, the best way to keep your teeth and gums dentally healthy as we age is to ...
Do you need an antibiotic before root canal treatment (called antibiotic prophylaxis)? There are two categories of patients who may need this. Those with certain heart conditions and those with artificial joints. The rules have changed in the last few years so what may have been true for you in the past may not be true now.. Here is an excerpt from the American Dental Society:. Before some dental treatments, patients who have certain heart conditions and those with artificial joints take antibiotics. When treating patients with heart conditions, dentists follow recommendations developed by the American Heart Association, with input from the ADA. For patients who have total joint replacements, they refer to recommendations developed by the American Academy of Orthopedic ...

Robert (Bob) Barone has served as treasurer on the Advisory Board of Directors for Northern Nevada Dental Health Programs (NNDHP) for nineteen years. An investment advisor at Four Star Wealth Management, Barone brings 40+ years of experience in academia, banking and finance to the non-profit.. A visionary and longtime supporter of the life changing charitable work he has seen northern Nevada dentists execute through NNDHP, the non-profit arm of the Northern Nevada Dental Society, over the years, Barone believes other cities could benefit from taking a page from NNDHPs book.. Anywhere there is a large population, there are dentists, said Barone. The dental community in northern Nevada has shown that they are willing to treat underserved populations pro-bono and I cant imagine any other dental community that wouldnt want to do this too. The trouble is, it takes a lot of structure to facilitate such ...

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3. What are the symptoms indicating potential problems? Bad breath, pain around the mouth, swelling or irritation of the gums, bleeding, swelling around the jaw or nose, fever, lethargy, pain when eating, or refusal to eat.. A solution: Until recently, the only way to remove plaque and tartar has been a visit to the vet for a dental cleaning. This usually involves the use of a general anesthetic, and that ...
