The Association of Directors of Childrens Services has backed a proposal to include a specialism in working with children in the social work degree.. In its submission to the Social Work Task Force, the ADCS said courses were failing to prepare graduates who were immediately ready to enter the workforce. Child development. It identified a strong case for specialisation in the last year of the degree, including knowledge of child development, multi-agency working and a core set of skills for the childrens workforce.. But ADCS rejected Lord Lamings recommendation that childrens specialisation should occur in the second year of the degree, arguing that this would risk losing the coherence of social work as a profession across adults and childrens services. The idea of child specialisation in the social work degree was proposed by the government before Lamings report, and was included in the looked-after children white paper in 2007.. Statutory placements. In its taskforce submission, ...

The role and importance of assessment in development of health and social services are well accepted in the field and represent the fundamental building blocks for the creation of any form of social intervention. Needs assessments are, without question, the most common form of assessment in these fields. Newer areas of social work practice involve management science.[23] The growth of social work administration for transforming social policies into services and directing activities of an organization toward achievement of goals is a related field.[24] Helping clients with accessing benefits such as unemployment insurance and disability benefits, to assist individuals and families in building savings and acquiring assets to improve their financial security over the long-term, to ...

Research direction comes out of a range of social work practice settings for Dr. Mona Schatz. Recent research activities arise from experiences that are personally challenging, often examining areas of practice that have had little or no attention in the professional publications. For example, for more than four years, Dr. Schatz has been learning about private pension accounts such as Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) and other similar retirement saving approaches. These financial accounts are new; the Boomers are the first generation to have financial vehicles such as these accounts to support them in their retirement years. Earlier, Dr. Schatz worked with social work colleagues and the City of Casper to examine the views and expectations of upcoming Boomers. Gambling disorder is a significant public health concern. The recent and continued proliferation of land-based and interactive gambling opportunities has increased both accessibility and acceptability of gambling in the United States and abroad, resulting in greater and more varied participation. However, there is currently no designated federal funding for prevention, intervention, treatment, or research, and states are left to adopt varying standards on an ad hoc basis. Social workers receive little or no training in screening or treating problem gamblers, though research suggests that a significant proportion of those with mental health and other addictive disorders also gamble excessively. Raising awareness about the nature and scope of gambling disorder and its devastating implications for families and children is a first-step toward integrating gambling into prevention, assessment and treatment education in social work. This, in turn, will increase the chances of early identification and ...

Jordan Moore, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, Cambridge, MA 02138, I utilize a combination of strengths-based and client-centered psychotherapies to offer therapy that is personally tailored to each of my clients. I work to ensure that I meet each individual where they are, throughout our work together. I draw from a variety of theoretical orientations including: psychodynamic (insight oriented), CBT (skills development) and DBT (mindfulness and skills). I believe that psychotherapy works most effectively when it addresses both current issues ( e.g. anxiety, relationship conflict), and the patterns that led to those issues.

The four primary theoretical schools contributing to social-work philosophy are psychodynamic, humanist, cognitive-behavioral, and postmodern. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), although considered one of the third-wave behavioral approaches, draws from all four theoretical schools of clinical intervention. This entry gives an overview of ACT development, its essential features, empirical base, tenets and techniques, and relevance to the social-work profession.
Michael Chenkin, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, Somerville, NJ, 08876, (908) 444-0157, You have a love/hate relationship with alcohol--sometimes its enough to make you throw up. Feelings of guilt and shame about drinking hang heavy on your heart. After making countless promises to yourself and others to stop, your failure sits out there for everyone to see. Last night you had not a care in the world. This morning its hard to look at yourself in the mirror. Embarrassing episodes from the past haunt you. The hangovers are upsetting, but not as upsetting as the anxiety and depression you keep at bay with alcohol. You know your life would be better if you could change but you still havent found a way to do that.

The complexity and variability of psychosocial issues associated with cancer has created the demand for highly skilled practitioners who are trained to provide multilevel assessment and intervention throughtout the illness continuum. Oncology social workers are primary providers of psychosocial services in major oncology treatment centers and community health care settings throughout the world, both because of their knowledge about cancer and its psychosocial impact, and because of their practice versatility. Oncology social workers are trained in prevention, education, advocacy, research, and counseling. Their role has evolved to a central role in oncology care for several reasons. 1. Social work was established early in the 20th century as an essential component of the interdisciplinary health care team when Ida Canon became the first hospital social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1919. This chapter analyses the relationship between New Labours modernisation agenda, managerialism, and information and communications technology (ICT), and then looks at the relationship between ICT and social work in a contact centre in the United Kingdom. It focuses on the experience of working in a contact centre as a social worker, and the role and identity of social workers in this context. The chapter also provides insights into how the contact-centre environment positions social workers in relation to service users and how the use of ICT affects work processes. Moreover, it considers what motivates social workers to work in this environment, their perceptions of occupational stress in this setting, and the effect of this model on their social-work skills. Finally, the chapter examines research in the public and private sectors to see what it has to offer in relation to the social-services context, before reflecting on the implications for social work in the future.
Mental Disorders in the Social Environment. Social workers provide more mental health services than any other profession, yet recent biomedical trends in psychiatry appear to minimize the importance of their traditional concerns, which focus on the social environment that accompanies mental disorders and their treatment. In twenty-four chapters written by distinguished scholars this book not only calls attention to this emerging problem and challenges conventional mental health beliefs and practices, but also raises provocative questions: Has social work become too closely associated with psychiatry and too quick to adopt a medical approach? Has the focus on the therapeutic relationship negated social works commitment to social reform? Is the social worker marginalized by the emphasis in mental health on biochemistry and psychopharmacology?. This book calls on social workers and other health care professionals to be more skeptical about diagnosis, community treatment, evidence-based practice, ...
