In an increasingly globalized, "flatter" world, multi-national corporations are currently operating in some of the poorest countries in the world. Focusing on American-based multinational corporations in African countries, this paper examines how businesses can best interact with non-governmental organizations and other influencing bodies to successfully adapt to a changing world. It will explore how public relations affects this delicate, evolving relationship, specifically in the form of corporate social responsibility, and how the success of such a relationship can influence the perceptions and ultimately the business practices of multinational corporations. Finally, it will consider what ethical responsibilities -- if any -- multinational corporations have toward not only their shareholders and consumers, but to all stakeholders, especially those who belong to the populations of the countries in which they operate ...

Last month, the Seattle Times kicked off a four-part critical series about locally-based Amazon with an expose on the companys lack of organized philanthropy in the community. The meme is not new--weve seen similar critique emerge about Apple in the wake of Steve Jobs death and the Foxconn scandal. What was surprising was the backlash to the criticism reflected in the comments about the article on SeattleTimes.com. Here at Waggener Edstrom, it caused us to wonder: has the American public changed its expectations for corporate social responsibility?. Next week, two conferences go head-to-head on the topic of corporate support for public good. In Chicago, the Cause Marketing Forum (CMF) will celebrate its 10th anniversary covering the intersection of commerce and cause. In New York, the Social Innovation Summit will hold its 3rd semi-annual invitation-only networking event focused on public-private partnerships.. At first blush, it might seem surprising that two events with such overlap in ...

One of the vehicles by which companies can conform to CSR in South Africa is Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). In this regard, BEE has been employed to assist previously disadvantaged groups of investors obtain a larger share of the equity of South African listed companies. The question has often been asked whether the announcement of BEE transactions by listed companies increases shareholder wealth. This article tries to answer this question by examining the share performance of 125 BEE transactions involving 95 companies during the period January 2002 to July 2006. The results indicate a positive relation between BEE transaction announcements and shareholder wealth creation, but only during the last part of the period covered by the study.. Downloadable (with restrictions)! This paper assesses the impact of environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) on Corporate Financial Performance (CFP) measured by ROA and Tobins Q. We show that the relationship between firms return on assets (ROA) and ECSR, strengths and concerns, is negative and statistically significant. We also show that firms Tobin Q and ECSR, strengths and concerns, are negatively correlated in a statistically significant way. However, accounting for the interaction between firms environmental efforts and R&D yields a different perspective: while the direct impact of ECSR on CFP is still negative, the interaction of ECSR and R&D has a positive and significant impact on it. ECSR strengths and concerns harm CFP since they are perceived as a potential cost. However, this CSR activity fosters R & D efforts of firms which generates additional value (indirect effect).

Abstract Given their reverence and idol-like status, present-day professional Black male athletes in the American context face extensive pressure to act in a socially responsible manner. To date, however, researchers have yet to garner insights of the individual social responsibility (ISR) of professional athletes. This basic interpretive qualitative study elicited perceptions of the ISR of professional Black male athletes. The participants, athletes, and employees of one National Basketball Association (NBA) organization typified this responsibility as the following: (a) a social responsibility to self, (b) being a role model, (c) responsibility to the Black community, and (d) engaging in genuine activity. The findings are discussed in relation to their practical implications and future research directions are discussed. ...
Sarvodaya wins National Icon Award 2005 for Social Responsibility. Tonight, Sarvodaya was awarded the National Icon Award 2005 for Social Responsibility. The National Icon Awards are conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), the national body of marketers in association with TNS one of the largest research agencies in the world. SLIM has been recognized as the leading body recognizing excellence in advertising, branding, etc. With this new initiative SLIM has gone beyond marketing.. The uniqueness of this award is that the awardees are chosen by common people. While there are many awards in Sri Lanka, there appears to be little cognizance of the common peoples view in deciding the best, or the most admired. The main idea of the National Icon Awards is to uncover popular choice - the peoples point of view. An the theme of this award scheme is "power to the people", since, with them, lies the destiny of the country. The award is not a reflection of brand or ad effectiveness but ...

Applying the structural equation modeling approach to a sample of 154 guesthouses, this study finds that LOM positively influences CSR, performance, and owners operational intentions. The mediating effects of CSR and performance on the path from LOM to owners operational intentions are also demonstrated. Lastly, the theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are ...

business has a responsibility to the community where they are conducting their business. That responsibility may be carried in many ways. Often companies support or sponsor community events such as medical camps, sports, school fees, festivals, scholarship and awards and environmental clean-up. Most organizations encourage their employees to get involved in their communities. It is not un-usual to find business people holding key positions as community volunteers. Most organization depends on such cadre of volunteers to accomplish their goals. The bar has been raised for multinational companies. Corporate accountability is being discussed in the news, by shareholders, and in corporate board rooms. U.S. government agencies are examining corporate conduct through the lense of the Enron scandal, and concerns about rogue nations and weapons proliferation have caused governments to scrutinize the international movement of goods, technology and money. Local communities around the globe, with the help of the media, are placing demands for better living standards not only on their governments, but increasingly on the multinational companies that are operate in their backyard, and these demands, in some cases, have resulted in multi-million dollar litigation in the U.S. In short, it is a challenging time for multinational oil and gas companies. The increasing importance of corporate social responsibility with practitioners is having huge attention in the academic literature. A growing study examines the reasons why firms engage in corporate social responsibility, and how it relates to financial performance of firms. Yet, the link between market performance of a firms stock and its social performance is under researched compared to that of the environment and economic perspectives. Therefore, this study adds insights to CSR-financial performance debate by focusing on the concept of social performance. Social performance refers to the firms product responsibility, community involvement, health and safety, diversity, training and development, human right, and employment quality. Using Thomson Reuters database social performance scores, we conduct a descripto-explanatory analysis to examine whether the Swedish stock market responds to social performance over the years 2010 to 2014 for a sample of 66 Swedish firms listed at OMX ...

Some studies (Torelli, 2012) show that communicating about the self-transcendent values of CSR, and simultaneously, communicating about the self-enhancing luxury brand values, creates a motivational conflict in consumers minds. This leads to a feeling of disfluency, and in many occasions, decreased brand evaluations. Since the importance of CSR is constantly increasing, also in the luxury industry, my research aims to find out if combining these two brand concepts is possible. I am also interested in finding factors that help self-enhancement luxury brands to engage in CSR in a credible way. I am examining this phenomenon with a case, a jewelry company Tiffany & Co. Lim-Lum Kit-Wye is Assistant Professor, Division of Business Law, Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The topic of corporate social responsibility is not a new one. Much has been written in the United States and Europe on the issue of whether a company is an economic institution which has a social service as well as a profit-making function . In Singapore, interest in the subject has burgeoned in the past few years. However, despite the growing support and awareness of the business community and its observers, there is reason to doubt whether there is a true understanding of the issues involved and whether there can be real commitment without such understanding. One primary reason for this doubt is the uncertainty that surrounds the fundamental issue of what really is meant by corporate social responsibility . This article attempts to highlight the problems that arise as a result of such uncertainty and to discuss the main areas of confusion, as well as to ...
Erik Osmundsen, CEO of Norsk Gjenvinning (NG), had initiated a program to eliminate corruption and improve compliance, and as a result the company had experienced a turnover of almost half of its top 70 line managers and strained relations with several competitors and the waste management industry association. Osmundsen had relentlessly pushed an agenda that involved transforming and professionalizing the waste management industry to mitigate instances of corruption and other crimes. Osmundsen was convinced that his turnaround strategy would be effective. Having brought employees on board, he was planning to relentlessly engage customers, regulators, and security agencies. It was still unclear though how fast customer demand for robust compliance programs would affect the competitive dynamics. How should NG go about convincing its customers? What could NG learn from companies in other industries that have relied on customer support to shift to responsible business practices? Did competitors that ...

On 3 and 4 July 2006 the International Institute for Labour Studies at the International Labour Organization held a conference on "Governance, International Law and Corporate Social Responsibility". The first aim of this fairly complex exercise was to define the sometimes rather blurred concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the process of globalization, examining the position - real and potential - of international law in an area where the usual approach is highly voluntarist. The very expression "CSR" is controversial in its use of the term "social" or "societal" to describe the subjects covered.. ...
