Alexander Billioux, MD, DPhil, assistant secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health, has a vision that moves beyond screening for health-related social needs toward investments in upstream improvements to SDOH in Louisiana. Having previously served as the Director of the Division of Public Health Incentives and Infrastructure at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), Billioux has dual expertise in the federal and state-level policy landscapes. His work illustrates the role public health agencies play in leading healthcare delivery system efforts to address both individual health-related social needs and community-wide SDOH.. During Billiouxs tenure, CMMI developed the Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Model to test whether systematically screening for and addressing five health-related social needs reduces total healthcare costs or improves health outcomes. The AHC model funds bridge organizations to act as a hub that connects individuals who are dually eligible for ...

Santorum, who came out of sixth place in Iowa less than two weeks ago to finish in a virtual dead heat with Mitt Romney, is not a one-dimensional candidate. Political junkies whose TV screens were wide enough to find him on the far right (politically) or far left (spatially) at every GOP debate heard a former Pennsylvania senator and congressman well-versed on topics ranging from immigration to Iran.. His campaign, however, has focused largely on social issues, based on Santorums belief that family and faith are the building blocks for everything else. He often mentions our special child, the couples 3-year-old daughter Bella, born with the genetic disorder Trisomy 18, as well as their stillborn son Gabriel, brought home from the hospital in 1996 so his siblings could meet him.. Its a message that inspires and alienates Americans on opposite sides of some of the nations most explosive social issues: Abortion. Disability. Gay marriage. Dont ask, dont tell.. Tackling inequities in childrens outcomes matters both from a moral perspective, and because of persuasive social and economic arguments. Reducing inequity in childrens outcomes requires tackling structural and social issues. The paper provides evidence about how social, economic and environmental conditions shape inequities in childrens outcomes. Building on insights generated through studies on the social determinants of health, the paper provides a framework to inform research and policy to reduce inequities in childrens outcomes, with a specific focus on low- and middle-income countries.. ...
The overall differences in mean scores in the replication study suggest that improved targeting has increased the proportion of complex cases in CMHT case-loads. Each of the three professional groups had experienced a similar increase in mean scores between the two studies, while the total case-load size in all these locations remained broadly similar at about 6000 cases. The mean MARC2 scores of social workerscases remains significantly higher than the scores of nurses and occupational therapists. There could be a number of possible explanations for this finding: the nature of the MARC2 items, which contain several items relating to serious social problems, and if social workers accept cases with more social problems then there will be higher complexity scores in their case-loads; at the same time, it may be that the nurses in the teams are increasingly focused on evidence-based interventions with people facing less complex problems but ones that are amenable to modern effective interventions. ...

In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Ted Cruz, when asked about Rand Pauls statement that the Republican Party should agree to disagree on social issues in order to grow the party, didnt address Pauls statement directly. But rather, he stated his position clearly, that the Republican Party should continue to defend life and traditional values. Of course, this means he doesnt agree with Rand Paul on the issue, but he obviously doesnt want to feed the media beast and have another public disagreement with Paul like happened recently.. ...

Economists and neuroscientists from the California Institute of Technology have shown that they can use information obtained through functional magnetic resonance imaging measurements of whole-brain activity to create feasible, efficient and fair solutions to one of the stickiest dilemmas in economics, the public-goods free-rider problem -- long thought to be unsolvable. This is one of the first-ever applications of neurotechnology to real-life economic problems, the researchers note.

But they didnt even PROVE anything, except that bribing still works.... The Cal Tech researchers measured the brain patterns of volunteers asked to role-play just that kind of scenario. The scans helped the researchers determine whether or not the participants were lying when they said how much they valued a hypothetical service. Those who told the truth about how much they valued the service got to pay less to receive the service (in this case, an actual cash payout). Those who werent honest got less money. With the payments proving the accuracy of the MRI at reading peoples honesty, almost everyone in the experiment began voting for a fair distribution of the burden for supporting the service.. So, not using proven and accepted lie-detector protocols, they came to determinations about who was being honest. Then, they rewarded those they preferred for acting within accepted boundaries. Big surprise then that those who were treated unfairly by being denied equal treatment then began to ...

Children reared in unfavorable socioeconomic circumstances show increased susceptibility to the chronic diseases of aging when they reach the fifth and sixth decades of life. One mechanistic hypothesis for this phenomenon suggests that social adversity in early life programs biological systems in a manner that persists across decades and thereby accentuates vulnerability to disease. Here we examine the basic tenets of this hypothesis by performing genome-wide transcriptional profiling in healthy adults who were either low or high in socioeconomic status (SES) in early life. Among subjects with low early-life SES, there was significant up-regulation of genes bearing response elements for the CREB/ATF family of transcription factors that conveys adrenergic signals to leukocytes, and significant down-regulation of genes with response elements for the glucocorticoid receptor, which regulates the secretion of cortisol and transduces its antiinflammatory actions in the immune system. Subjects from ...

A growing scholarship on multistakeholder learning dialogues suggests the importance of closely managing learning processes to help stakeholders anticipate which policies are likely to be effective. Much less work has focused on how to manage effective transnational multistakeholder learning dialogues, many of which aim to help address critical global environmental and social problems such as climate change or biodiversity loss. They face three central challenges. First, they rarely shape policies and behaviors directly, but work to nudge or tip the scales in domestic settings. Second, they run the risk of generating compromise approaches incapable of ameliorating the original problem definition for which the dialogue was created. Third, they run the risk of being overly influenced, or captured, by powerful interests whose rationale for participating is to shift problem definitions or narrow instrument choices to those innocuous to their organizational or individual interests. Drawing on ...

Tuesdays, 1:45 pm - 3:45 pm. This course considers some of the toughest problems in current health law and policy. Which countries have the best health care systems, and why? What roles should government play in health care, and what roles should it avoid? Does the U.S. make too many social problems into medical ones, or too few? What is the best way to support the cost of care for those who are too sick or too poor to afford it? How can we spend less on health care and get more for our money? To what degree should the future health care system be controlled by physicians? How can individuals and communities become healthier? How can racial disparities in health care and health be reduced? How can the health care system best serve an aging population? What policies would most effectively further innovation? Finally, how has law defined these problems and how can legal change facilitate their solution ...
I started reading nonfiction in my first year out of college, in an effort to better understand the world and the forces that shape it. After starting a new tech job in the Bay Area, I started building mental models from my experiences at work, but also had a growing exposure to and affinity for social issues both local and worldwide. I found I was more motivated to work on problems with direct social impact, which in turn prompted me to dig deeper into their causes - though I realized I didnt know much about the world outside of tech, and wanted to broaden my worldview.. Learning more about the world is rewarding in and of itself, but its more valuable when guided by a specific set of goals, due to the realities of infinite knowledge and finite time. Naturally, this led to questions about what the most pressing social issues are, how I could best contribute to them, and what I want my career to amount to. My answers to these questions are constantly developing as I continue to introspect on ...

If even a single instance of smoking were to consign a movie to R status because of its potential to influence children to smoke, immediate parallel questions arise about a wide range of other potentially adverse role modelling cues in films. Smoking causes massive health problems, but in that it is not unique. Globally, large-scale health and social problems flow from many activities that also often appear in movies. These include crime, physical inactivity, over-eating, excessive use of alcohol, unsafe sex, speeding and dangerous driving, gambling, risk taking such as extreme sport and adventure, motor cycle use and helmet-less cycling. For example, by the same reasoning that movies showing smoking might normalise or glamorise tobacco use, it could be argued that film should never show positive scenes of gluttony or actors enthusiastically eating fast food because of the obesity epidemic and millions of overweight and obese children struggling to control their weight. Countless comedy scripts ...
John S Wilkins of Evolving Thoughts is exploring some definitions to facilitate a discussion of the philosophical landscape around the issues of atheism, agnosticism, theism, and so on.. One point I took issue with in his first post was his statement that To be an agnostic is to neither have nor not have a belief which seems to me to be putting the existence of agnostics in conflict with the Law of the Excluded Middle. Although in colloquial speech we may often say I dont believe it is raining with an implication that we actually believe it is not raining, this is a) really just a colloquialism, and b) not the same wording as I dont have a belief that it is raining.. I expect Wilkins further discussions to be interesting and possibly illuminating, but I am actually more interested in understanding what drives people who profess apparently (to me) unfounded beliefs, than in clarifying the language of those who do not. Commenter Sarah Collett, referring to her own Christian belief ...
