Dr Jane OSullivan. Population Health & Environment (PHE): Holistic rural development exploits cross-sectoral synergies. Population Health and Environment (PHE) has been described as "an interdisciplinary model of program design which responds to the interconnected challenges faced by ecosystems and the communities dependent on them." It is gaining popularity particularly in East Africa, on the back of remarkable successes. The approach has emerged in grassroots projects, generally when an environmental conservation project realises that addressing population growth is vital to their goals. Its success now lies in a focus on sustainable livelihoods, and in harnessing community members and existing community organisations as change agents.. An early PHE experiment was the Integrated Population and Coastal Resource Management (IPOPCORM) initiative in the Philippines, running from 2000-2007 in marine conservation areas with high population growth. This led to an effort to extend the model elsewhere ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This paper studies an early participatory rural development program implemented during the 1930s in Japan. This program selected several villages each year to draft and implement their own original development plans. I discuss the implications of the features of the program on its effectiveness. A detailed baseline survey conducted by the villagers themselves helped them to objectively diagnose their economic situations and understand their issues. The plans defined clear numerical targets, allowing them to share goals and monitor progress. The implementation of the plan was reinforced by frequent communication and monitoring among neighbors and by an incentive scheme that involved competition within a village. I use a village-level panel dataset from the Hyogo prefecture to examine the effects, under the difference-in-differences strategy. I find suggestive evidence that the program helped foster the adoption of cattle raising and diversify agricultural production.

Summary: The authors describe and analyze management in the Murray-Darling basin of Australia, long regarded as a model for integrated river basin management. This interior basin of over 1 million km2 in semi-arid southeastern Australia is defined by the catchment areas of the Murray and Darling Rivers and their tributaries. Water management issues include allocation, quality, and dryland salinity. Because of Australias federal governmental structure, institutional development has been more a matter of integrating state and local endeavors than decentralization of national authority. The Australian national government has little constitutional power over water resources. The five states in the basin make policy regarding water rights, discharge permits, fees, and the construction and operation of physical structures. River management began on the Murray River in the 1920s under the terms of a tri-state agreement. As the scope of management widened to the entire basin, more states were added and ...

This dissertation studies several important issues in developing countries. The first essay focuses on rural-urban migration and rural entrepreneurship in China. I find that depending on the initial human capital level, policies aiming to advance human capital may have different impacts on migration. Even though return migrants help raise rural labor demand and wages, the income inequality between the urban and rural areas is not eliminated and migration is persistent. The borrowing constraints limit the size of rural non-farm businesses and slow down the development of the rural industry. The second essay studies the dynamics of rural-urban migration income and rural non-farm business ownership in China, applying a dynamic bivariate probit model to the China Rural Households Survey Data. The positive correlation between receiving migration remittances in one period and operating rural non-farm business in the following period is explained by correlated unobserved heterogeneity. A negative state ...
Downloadable! Food processing firms are often seen as potential sources of growth for rural areas. This paper examines the influence that agglomeration, labor, product and input markets, infrastructure, and government fiscal attributes have on food manufacturing investment flows. The analysis uses a spatial probit model along with spatial clustering methods to analyze county-level data for 12 states in the midwest and southern U.S. Findings suggest that rural areas are at a comparative disadvantage with respect to attracting demand-oriented food processors, but non-metro counties with economic ties to urban centers may be attractive investment sites to supply-oriented food manufacturers.

Food, Water and Agriculture. 176. Governments should establish multisectoral programmes to promote the productive capacity of rural poor women in food and animal production, create off-farm employment opportunities, reduce their work-load, inter alia, by supporting the establishment of adequate child-care facilities and that of their children, reverse their pauperization, improve their access to all sources of energy, and provide them with adequate water, health, education, effective extension services and transportation within their region. In this connection it should be noted that the World Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development, held at Rome in 1979, 12/ recognized womens vital role in the socio-economic life in both agricultural and non-agricultural activities as a prerequisite for successful rural development policies, planning and programmes, and proposed specific measures for improving their condition, which are still valid. Vocational and technical training programs for less developed countries offer little in the way of training the intermediate cadres, technicians, and village level workers necessary for modernizing the primary sector on which developing economies depend. Training is vital because it secures cost reduction and maximum use of organization, enables people to face changes involved by new techniques and products, improves job performance and gives greater job satisfaction, and brings higher standards of workmanship by improving goods and services. Training needs exist at organizational, occupational, and individual levels. The main steps in developing a successful and effective training program are creation of interest in training activities, development of training process and content of training, analysis, generalization or inferences, and practice or tryout or internalization of abstractions. A well-defined evaluation process is essential to continuously monitor the fulfillment of

The money raised will go to institutions that lend to 70,000 low-income borrowers in 13 developing countries, according to a statement released last week by Morgan Stanley and the microfinance asset manager BlueOrchard Finance in Geneva. Morgan Stanley is widening the number of institutions that can invest in small loans to the developing world by putting the debt in securities with credit ratings as high as Wal-Mart Stores, the worlds largest retailer, and the drug maker Eli Lilly. This arrangement allows many institutions who could not [ often due to restrictions on the quality of debt or investment grade taken on] or would not provide direct finance, to have a more secure vehicle with much superior credit ratings as the financing institution ...

Finally, the course was given twice on both sides of the Portuguese-Galician border as the "International Masters in Rural Development Management", in a collaborative venture that brought together UTAD and both the Economics Faculty and IDEGA (the Galician Institute for Research & Development) of the University of Santiago de Compostela. The most recent postgraduate initiative provided by DESG has been the Masters in "Local Development: Territories, Society & Citizenship" which to date has been taught twice. In terms of rural development, the stakeholders noted the priorities should be undertaken by increasing spending on agriculture infrastructure and improving easy credit access and financing. They cited the need for a shift in the irrigation paradigm from huge and long-gestating mega projects to small, community-based projects.. They sought to protect the rights of farmers and enable them to own, secure and develop their lands, as well as promote food-security, productive and resilient agrarian reform communities, and transform the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) into an efficient, enhanced, effective and values-driven agency.. The stakeholders emphasized the need to keep communities safe, peaceful and orderly, improve local preparedness and resilience down to the barangay level, and sustain transparency and accountability in local governments.. For local economic development, they cited the need to build capacities and explore new governance arrangements by continuing to hold dialogues on ...
Although the economic arguments for the diversion were once very strong, a number of things have changed since the diversion scheme had first been envisaged. In 1988, the Ministry of National Economy commissioned Morgan Grenfell to perform a cost benefit analysis on the project.. This study concluded that even assuming the tight schedules then proposed were met, the financial viability of the project was marginal.. Despite changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the EUs explicit reduction in financial support for agricultural growth, the Greek Government approved the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Sykia and Mesochora dams two years later. Later that year, formal applications were made for CSF and Rural Development funding of the project.. In addition, the growing climate of greater environmental awareness and increasingly stringent legislation made the whole issue far more contentious than it had been when first envisaged.. Water has a central role in societies. Historically, health, ealth and economic development always greatly have benefited from effective management of water supplies. Antiquity recognised the need for reliable supplies of safe water for human needs. Over the centuries, proper management of the vital resource of water has led always to developments and improvements in health. Effectively managed water supplies and resource-protection systems generated indispensable bases for agricultural and industrialproduction. Urban and rural development has thrived where water sources have been managed effectively. In many growing European cities, this process started as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. Particularly in the 19th century, water was a central preoccupation of state and industrial leaders. As a consequence of safer and bettermanaged water systems, farming and industrial development expanded, food supplies increased and became more reliable and healthy, a number of major diseases no longer ...

Efficient farming practices can help farmers grow their businesses and improve farm lands to become important engines of economic growth. However, land management can be challenging, especially for communities that are new to farming.. In communities near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, learning about farm management is helping farmers transform previously unused land into active and productive farms.. To help these communities develop farming businesses, the High Commission of Canada supported a recent project by the Lima Rural Development Foundation through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). Lima, a non-governmental organization based in South Africa, is helping five Community Property Associations (CPAs) near Vryheid reform their land into productive farms and establish farming businesses. ...
The Commission also suggests reinforcing the elements that contribute to the added value of cohesion policy: concentrating resources on investment, complying with the rules on the single market, placing the emphasis on job creation in new areas, contributing to partnership and good governance, and the leverage effect (as a result of co-financing rules that mobilise additional resources for new investment from national public and private resources).. The heading sustainable management and protection of natural resources is to receive a total of EUR 405 billion for the period 2007-2013, of which 72% for agriculture (EUR 301 billion). Most of the expenditure for this heading stems from the reform of the common agricultural policy (CAP), rural development policy after 2006 and from the new common fisheries policy (January 2003) for which the Commission proposes a simplification of the financial arrangements and structures. Environmental matters are also of great importance and the Commission ...

Her successful fight against ovarian cancer had already persuaded her to seek a spot on the subcommittee that oversees the Department of Health and Human Services, but she wanted Dodds counsel on which other subcommittee assignments to pursue.. "He said, obviously you want to go where your interests lie, but also think about places where not everybody is like you, you know, where you represent a different part of the country and different set of interests and have a different perspective,- DeLauro recalled in a phone interview last week. Taking Dodds words to heart, she requested a seat on the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development and Food and Drug Administration - which she was granted, along with the Labor-HHS spot.. He said the consequences of the 2012 coup détat had hit the poorest and most vulnerable hardest, with little effect on the perpetrators. Transnational organized crime and drug trafficking remained major concerns, while institutional constraints, political instability and a lack of law-enforcement resources were still significant obstacles. Stressing that impunity was the result of persistent political instability, weak institutions and unresolved hurdles in civil-military relations, he said the impact on the economy was devastating. Public finances were in a very poor condition, while food insecurity in such a fertile country was a "crying contradiction". He proposed three achievable, modest, medium-term strategic objectives: completion of a full democratic cycle with a constitutional transfer of power to elected officials; a concerted effort to focus on food security and rural development; and putting a platform in place to coordinate international support for modernizing the security ...

NEW DELHI-A week after being named Indias science minister, on 19 July Vilasrao Deshmukh assumed the post. He is the fourth science minister since Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs second 5-year term began in May 2009. A 66-year-old grassroots politician and lawyer from the western state of Maharashtra, Deshmukh last studied science in college. He previously served as minister for rural development, a flagship program of the Singh government. The Times of India newspaper labeled the transfer a "demotion." In accepting his new position today, Deshmukh insisted that is not the case. He delayed moving to the science ministry, he says, because he had been busy this past week standing for election to a cricket management body in Mumbai. Many Indian scientists say they are unhappy that the countrys most powerful science position has been reduced to a game of musical chairs. Science programs take a hit and suffer setbacks with these frequent changes, says department secretary T. Ramasami. However, he ...

Alternatively, if you send us a plan of your land we would be happy to check for you..
