This study extends previous research investigating the social representation of organ donation and transplantation (Moloney & Walker, 2000, 2002) by exploring the accommodation of contradiction (Wagner, Duveen, Verma, & Thelmel, 2000) within consensual reality (Rose et al., 1995), and the role of themata (Markova, 2000) in a representation. The study employed a mail-out questionnaire embedded with eight experimental conditions, which manipulated two tasks, scenario rating scale and word association. WMDS (INDSCAL) analyses demonstrated that the dialectical concepts of life and death are generative of a contradictory representational field that is maintained through the differential elicitation of the normative and functional dimensions (Guimelli, 1998) of the representation in accordance with social context.. ...
Despite the growing popularity of self-help groups for people with chronic illness, there has been surprisingly little research into how these may support adjustment to illness. This study investigated the role that social comparison, occurring within a self-help group, may play in adjustment to chronic illness. A model of adjustment based on control process theory and response shift theory was tested to determine whether social comparisons predicted adjustment after controlling for the catalyst for adjustment (disease severity) and antecedents (demographic and psychological factors). A sample of 301 people with Ménières disease who were members of the Ménières Society UK completed questionnaires at baseline and 10-month follow-up assessing adjustment, defined for this study as functional and goal-oriented quality of life. At baseline, they also completed measures of the predictor variables i.e. the antecedents (age, sex, living circumstances, duration of self-help group membership, ...
Background Little is known about the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and health in late adolescence. As it is difficult to measure SES in this age group directly, we used two subjective social status (SSS) scales with different reference groups for social comparison in the relatively homogeneous group of university students and analyzed the relationship with health and health behaviors. Methods We used two 10-rung ladders, a societal and a university one, to measure SSS in students (n = 689, 16-29 years). We compared the scales ratings and analyzed relationships with sociodemographic factors, health outcomes and behaviors. Results On average, students rated their individual SSS higher on the university scale (6.87) than on the societal one (6.41). Regarding health outcomes and behaviors, we found similar results for both scales, while sociodemographic variables were more likely to be associated with the societal scale. Conclusion SSS seems to be a useful measure besides the ...
Researchers report an inverse association between peoples subjective social status (SSS) and the likelihood of them having a psychiatric disorder.. The association was evident for all 16 mental disorders assessed, including bipolar disorder, and was independent of peoples objective social status, based on measures of income, education and occupation.. This indicates that studies relying on objective measures of socioeconomic status may underestimate the size of the association between social circumstances and mental health, say Kate Scott (University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand) and co-authors.. Their study used data from 20 surveys undertaken in 18 countries in Asia, the South Pacific, South America and the USA, Europe and the Middle East, involving 56,085 people. Participants SSS was specific to the situation in their own countries.. Previous research has suggested that feelings of shame, frustration and anxiety associated with the perception of low relative social status may increase ...

I think making friends is a system. People who do it naturally dont think of it as a system, but its something that can be learned. Ill break it down into the steps I can think of, and if anyone else thinks of more, please add them.. 1. Be yourself. Your mothers been saying it for years, but shes right. You have a ton of outstanding qualities that would make people want to be your friend, whether youre shy or loud, an optimist or a pessimist, snarky or earnest, or you like dark chocolate or milk chocolate. People want to be around people who are comfortable with themselves, so make no apologies, let your freak flag fly, and be who you are.. 2. Pick the right school for you and your child. This all goes back to #1, which is that you have to be able to be who you hare. If youve gotten yourself into a school in which everyone else is waaay different from you, youre going to feel like the odd woman out all the time.. If your interests are in sustainable agriculture and environmentalism, then ...

An implicit stereotype is the unconscious attribution of particular qualities to a member of a certain social group. Implicit stereotypes are influenced by experience, and are based on learned associations between various qualities and social categories, including race or gender. Individuals perceptions and behaviors can be affected by implicit stereotypes, even without the individuals intention or awareness. Implicit stereotypes are an aspect of implicit social cognition, the phenomenon that perceptions, attitudes, and stereotypes operate without conscious intention. The existence of implicit stereotypes is supported by a variety of scientific articles in psychological literature. Implicit stereotype were first defined by psychologists Anthony Greenwald and Mahzarin Banaji in 1995. Explicit stereotypes are the result of intentional, conscious, and controllable thoughts and beliefs. Explicit stereotypes usually are directed toward a group of people based on what is being perceived. An explicit ...

Humans are inherently social creatures and our understanding of the world is shaped from the very beginning by the social interactions we observe and engage in. As a consequence, we are truly excellent at extracting information from social scenes. We can quickly discern if two people are cooperating or competing, flirting or fighting, and helping or hindering each other. Most important of all, we swiftly learn a great deal about people from observing their interactions with others - even a brief interaction give us important clues about their personality, their social abilities and their current mood. How does this remarkable skill develop? What are its brain bases? How is this kind of social interaction perception related to real-world social ability and social learning across development?. In essence, an ethnic group is a named social category of people based on perceptions of shared social experience or ancestry. Members of the ethnic group see themselves as sharing cultural traditions and history that distinguish them from other groups. Ethnic group identity has a strong psychological or emotional component that divides the people of the world into opposing categories of us and them. In contrast to social stratification, which divides and unifies people along a series of horizontal axes on the basis of socioeconomic factors, ethnic identities divide and unify people along a series of vertical axes. Thus, ethnic groups, at least theoretically, cut across socioeconomic class differences, drawing members from all strata of the population ...

University of California, Santa Barbara. This course introduces students to the theoretical and historical foundations of environmental racism and environmental inequality. We will examine and interrogate both the social scientific evidence concerning these phenomena and the efforts by community residents, activists, workers, and governments to combat it. We will consider the social forces that create environmental inequalities so that we may understand their causes, consequences, and the possibilities for achieving environmental justice. In particular, we pay close attention to the ways in which concepts like nature, race, gender, class, sexuality, citizenship, indigeneity, nation, and species intersect and shape one another in order to better understand how systems of power and inequality are constructed, reinforced, and challenged. Questions we will pursue include: how are relationships with the natural world implicated in the way we construct social categories of difference like race, ...

This foundational module will introduce students to the core concepts and methods of sociolinguistics, the study of the relationship between language and society. The focus will be on English as it is used in many varieties across the world, but some consideration will also be made of the sociolinguistics of other languages, like Welsh.. Various social categories will be considered that determine variability (including socio-economic class, age, and gender), as well as the ways in which variability is reflected in the English language structurally (in terms of accent, dialect, register and style) and in usage (including issues of politeness, accommodation, and context).. The aims of this course are ...
The social category children defines a group of individuals who are perceived to be distinct, with essential characteristics including innocence and the need for protection (Haslam, Rothschild, & Ernst, 2000). The present research examined whether Black boys are given the protections of childhood equally to their peers. We tested 3 hypotheses: (a) that Black boys are seen as less childlike than their White peers, (b) that the characteristics associated with childhood will be applied less when thinking specifically about Black boys relative to White boys, and (c) that these trends would be exacerbated in contexts where Black males are dehumanized by associating them (implicitly) with apes (Goff, Eberhardt, Williams, & Jackson, 2008). We expected, derivative of these 3 principal hypotheses, that individuals would perceive Black boys as being more responsible for their actions and as being more appropriate targets for police violence. We find support for these hypotheses across 4 studies using ...

The last time I was part of a population that was a majority black and Jewish was when I was seven years old and attended a historically black synagogue in Harlem, New York. Since then, I have never met another black Jew outside of my family. Because of this, I could never completely fit in. I didnt know whether I was just part of a small isolated community or part of a larger history. Now I know that its closer to the latter, though still not quite true. My fears of isolation and exclusion because of my race have prevented me from fully immersing myself in not only Princetons Jewish community, but also the general social scene on campus. I dont know whom to trust. I would like to be more extroverted. I would like to get to know different kinds of people, but I cant. Whenever I am around a large group of white people, I dont have any idea what theyre thinking; I cant predict their emotions, their prejudices, if any. Therefore, I cant help but assume that no one wants me there.. For ...
Unfortunately, the next track is what I like to call a pretty snoozer, again employing none of DeRosas guitar tricks, just a slowly repeated riff, some strings, and DeRosa and a female vocalists tired singing. Fortunately, things pick up again immediately with undeniably the most guitar rocking song DeRosa has penned, Arms. His romantic feelings here have gone from disappointed to vitriolic as he spews, How your arms were ropes, and Id wake up with them around my neck/build me up just to break me back down/no arms can break my fall. Over the top again, but its pretty tough not to get caught up in the emotion of the song. Unfortunately he again follows a high point with an uninteresting five-minute track, picking back up with Happiness Boys, which is weird, still angry, but almost as enjoyable as the other two standouts. Again, the ice of New York seems to have suited DeRosa far better than the L.A. social scene. He tries to make the best of things on the title track, singing wistfully ...

Forbes Magazine said Jeffrey Hildebrand is coming off a big year, having turned a $100 million investment in the Eagle Ford shale of Texas into a $1.4 billion payday with a sale to Marathon Oil. He has already reinvested in Cook Inlet, Alaska, buying fields from Chevron and Marathon. Hes also in big in the Utica shale of Ohio. Hildebrand left a safe career at Exxon and founded Hilcorp Energy in 1989. He started small, just three guys and a telephone, but was able to buy out partner Thomas Hook for $500 million in 2003. He began buying proven fields that were too small for the supermajors, then started using advanced technology to boost efficiency. His Hilcorp did well enough that in 2010 every employee got $50,000 to buy a new car. If they double the size of Hilcorp again by 2015, the bonus will be $100,000 each. Hildebrand is ultra private, but a fixture of the Houston social scene. He donates to Texas Childrens Hospital, Star of Hope Missions, Boys & Girls Clubs and the Houston Livestock ...

There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. The difference, I think, is that arrogance tries to impress others, while confidence doesnt worry about whether others are impressed by you or not. You have to be comfortable in your own skin to be confident, so be honest with yourself about your harmful choices and your nurturing choices and set goals for choosing the right ones for you. It took me a long time to gain confidence, and actually Im still working on it, but I now realize that I kept myself aloof and never initiated healthy relationships with people I admired, because I didnt think theyd be interested in me. I was also afraid that I didnt have anything interesting to say, and so any conversation I tried to start would become awkward and strained. Ultimately, I avoided social situations and surrounded myself with friends, who took care of keeping the conversation going.. By really observing, I started to understand that many people feel this way (at least a little bit), ...
