Our research focuses on The Big Three social categories in United States culture: gender, race, and sexual identity. We approach each of these social categories as research domains from the complementary perspectives of self-perception (viz. identity dynamics) and social perception (viz. the perception of these categories by others who are not the self). Though traditionally treated as different topics within social psychology, our lab combines these foci under the Social Perception heading that is the first part of our lab name (donating the SP to our lab acronym: SPAMS). (This approach is similar to approaches taken by personality psychologists and thereby illustrates our integrated social-personality approach.). Adding layer of complexity to the complementary perspectives within our social perception approach, we also focus on attitudes that individuals have regarding the Big Three social categories as defined above. The attitudes approach also features complementary perspectives, ...
This volume focuses on social perception, the processing of information about people. This issue has always been central to social psychology, but this book brings together literatures that in large part have been separated by the nature of the social target that is involved. Historically, research on person perception developed quite independently from research involving perceptions of groups. Whereas the former research generally focused on the cognitive processes involved in forming impressions of individuals, research on group perception examined the content of stereotypes and the conditions under which they are used in social judgment. There was been little overlap in the theories and methods of these subfields, and different researchers were central in each. The chapters in this book highlight research and theorizing about social perception, exploring the processes involved in social perception from persons to groups. Some chapters describe work that was originally developed in person perception

Schizophrenia has been described as a self-disorder, whereas social deficits are key features of the illness. Changes in resting state activity of brain networks involved in self-related processing have been consistently reported in schizophrenia, but their meaning for social perception deficits remains poorly understood. Here, we applied a novel approach investigating the relationship between task-evoked neural activity during social perception and functional organization of self-related brain networks during a resting state. Resting state functional MRI was combined with task-related functional MRI using a social perception experiment. Twenty-one healthy control participants (HC) and 21 out-patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (SCH) were included. There were no significant differences concerning age, IQ, education and gender between the groups. Results showed reduced resting state functional connectivity between ventromedial prefrontal cortex and dorsal posterior cingulate cortex ...
Imagine a future world where humans and machines will be involved in joint activities requiring social skills. This paper presents an overview of the dawnings of this world, concentrating on chatterbots - computer programs which engage the user in written conversation - and their users. Driving upon Clarks theory of Language and the psychological theory of self-categorisation by Turner, it presents an analysis of social reactions to chatterbots and a taxonomy of the technology. The basic assumption of the paper is that chatterbots are special entities which offer new ways of being and relating to others. The action of talking to a machine leads to the affordance in the user, and to the projection in the chatterbots, of new social identities. These identities are the drivers of the interaction and fundamental determinants of social presence.
The neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin are evolutionarily conserved regulators of social perception and behavior. Evidence is building that they are critically involved in the development of social recognition skills within rodent species, primates, and humans. We investigated whether common polymorphisms in the genes encoding the oxytocin and vasopressin 1a receptors influence social memory for faces. Our sample comprised 198 families, from the United Kingdom and Finland, in whom a single child had been diagnosed with high-functioning autism. Previous research has shown that impaired social perception, characteristic of autism, extends to the first-degree relatives of autistic individuals, implying heritable risk. Assessments of face recognition memory, discrimination of facial emotions, and direction of gaze detection were standardized for age (7-60 y) and sex. A common SNP in the oxytocin receptor (rs237887) was strongly associated with recognition memory in combined probands, parents, ...
Mathematics, as no other school subject, evokes conflicting emotions and contradictory attitudes - from the gate to a career and the queen of science to the widespread acceptance of mathematical ignorance in society. The process of studying mathematics requires systematic work and patience, as mathematical knowledge has a cumulative nature. In the case of mathematics education, some students abandon mathematics at quite early levels of education and begin to consider themselves humanists, which results in serious consequences for future educational and career choices. In this paper, I propose a description of the process of escaping from mathematics in the context of students perceptions of this subject, using the results of two studies - one qualitative and the other quantitative ...

Dr. Tate was interviewed on-the-record and on-background about the claim that nearly 25% of California adolescents may be gender non-conforming. Dr. Tates main point was that the question phrasing in the survey likely conflated gender role participation with sexual orientation and with gender self-categorization--all of which should be separated in surveys.. ...
Categorical reasoning is one of the cornerstones of psychological functioning, supporting explanation, induction, and learning in virtually every domain of knowledge, including reasoning about social categories. Dominant theories of social cognition focus on the role of internal/essential characteristics in representations of social kinds. Drawing upon an emerging literature in philosophy, I introduce an alternative to internalist thinking, called structural thinking, in which observed correlations between social categories and their properties are explained through stable external constraints, rather than derived from the inherent nature of the categories. For example, a structural explanation of why girls wear pink might appeal to the socio-cultural pressures that affect choices and their social consequences, as opposed to inherent color preferences. I will present a series of studies which trace the developmental trajectory of structural thinking from age three through adulthood, and ...
Person-centered investigations of athlete burnout have utility to unearth novel information about this developmental experience within the social environment of competitive sport. Guided by extant theory, conceptually proposed developmental patterns of athlete burnout were examined across a season as expressed in profiles of emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced accomplishment, and sport devaluation perceptions. Athlete social perceptions were also explored as predictors of profile membership. Collegiate athletes (N = 129) completed established assessments of study variables at four in-season time points. Latent profile analysis revealed profiles characterized by athletes experiencing the three burnout dimensions similarly at any given time point, with the notable exception of exhaustion being more frequently experienced in some profiles. Social support perceptions predicted profile membership with moderate success. Trends in profile stability provide some support for consideration of ...
On December 19, 2020, Governor Michael Dukakis lead the publication of the Quad Roundtable Report.. The role of the Social Contract for the AI Age in such a situation is to eliminate all negative risks and enhance all benefits such technological advancement could bring, protect democratic values, and maintain peace and security in the world.. First, it is necessary to mend not only the differences amongst the Western allies, such as different views of interests, social perceptions, and the role of the Western alliance in the United States, but also to reestablish US international leadership.. Second, the common interest of the Quad is an open Indo-Pacific region.. Third, while addressing possibilities and challenges brought about by artificial intelligence, US leadership must consider the interconnectivity of different types of interests in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad have role to ask China respect its neighbours and do not create tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, China needs to respect ...
Im hesitant to tell people I am gay. I dont actively hide it and will tell people who ask, but I dont feel it is my responsibility to flaunt it in any way. Even as a right of passage, it conveys two messages to society: first of all, it is still ok that there exists a duality of expectation where I, as a sexual minority, am required to come out and others, as a sexual majority, are allowed to exist in a presumed heterosexuality. I would rather alter the perception so that what exists is merely a presumed sexuality, where people dont need to come out but can just be - to make that change in social perceptions, I fight everybodys expectation that I will some day come out of the closet to everybody I know. Not my responsibility ...

Last week I attended Back to School - Learning and Growing in a Digital Age, an event which explored federal policy, e-learning, and digital literacy, sponsored by Common Sense Media, PBS Kids, USC Annenbergs Center on Communication Leadership & Policy, and The Childrens Partnership. The session that impacted me most was Empowering Parents and Kids with Technology. What was fascinating about the speakers on this panel was that collectively they described the evolution of Internet and its perceived challenges facing parents and kids over the last ten years, from a social perspective.. In the early online days, parents concerns about the Internet were largely about preventing children from stumbling upon inappropriate content online. As time passed, the concern shifted towards one of a fear of online predators. Today, the focus of concern is more about a childs privacy, cyberbullying, and what constitutes appropriate behavior online. If you think about it, our social perceptions of the ...

The provision of energy - including distribution and consumption - belongs to the basic requirements of a sustainable development. The transition from the predominant energy system constructed in the 70s and 80s to a more decentralised system that comprises more renewable energy already is in progress. However, there are still lots of unanswered questions, especially with regard to the interactions between the transformation of energy systems, the required infrastructure and the interactions with other resources. These questions do not only refer to technologies but also to their management, the connected institutions and social perception and acceptance, which, on the one hand, are subject to a permanent change and, on the other, depend on different cultural frame conditions in different countries. In the aftermath of the so-called refugee crisis, debates about migration and integration have become virulent in modern Western societies. However, it is not exclusively the social category of race, which creates a sense of otherness. The rather recent theory of intersectionality combines various approaches by asking how different social categories such as race, class, gender, age, sexual identity, religion, or physical ability are interdependent in defining an individuals identity, in the perception by others, and how social power relations are created. I argue that in an age of globalization, shifts in the perception of intersectional concerns that can be traced in East Asian Canadian fiction point towards more general developments in societal discourse. In times of pervasive global discourses about gender differences, migration and inclusion, my PhD-thesis aims hence at shedding light on the diachronic development of the encounter between Eastern and Western cultures in Canadian fiction. ...

ISSN 1807-5509. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1807-55092016000401069.. This study aimed to describe the children and adolescents motor performance in relation to their social status perceived by their colleagues in both sexes, and to check for sex effects in this possible association. The study gathered 300 children and adolescents from the 3rd to 5th year and 40 to 60 grade of elementary school from two public schools, aged between 8 and 14 years. The instruments used were the Motor Battery TGMD-2 and Subjective Scale Social Status. Girls had better motor performance than boys, however, only boys with better motor performance also had higher perceived social status. This situation tells us that boys are more susceptible to social evaluations guided in physical skills than girls so that they can make ...
Previous work suggests that relative increases in socially evaluative threat modulate the psychobiological stress response. However, few studies have compared stressors which manipulate the level of socially evaluative threat to which the participant is exposed. Here we present two studies. In the first, we assessed the integrity of an ecologically valid, laboratory stressor (direct socially evaluated multitasking) and its effects on acute psychobiological reactivity and ability to evoke an anticipatory response prior to participation. Specifically, we assessed whether the expectation and experience of direct social evaluation (multitasking while standing and facing an evaluator) evokes greater reactivity than indirect evaluation (over-the-shoulder evaluation). In the second study, we sought to replicate the findings regarding acute stress reactivity whilst extending the assessment window to assess the extent to which the stressor evokes anticipatory responses. As hypothesized, greater reactivity was

Interesting to read the NYT magazine piece last week on Broken Social Scene and the whole Torontopia milieu. Obviously post-Rip anything to do with a renaissance of collectives in rock is gonna to intrigue me, with its echoes of Scritti Politti and London Musicians Collective and Rough Trade as cooperative (plus that larger history of rock collectives: Faust at Wumme their former schoolhouse turned into studio-cum-living space--did a phoner with Hans Joachim Irmler the other day, around the reish of Faust IV, lovely feller--Amon Duul, Jefferson Airplane & coterie in their big rambling Victorian at 2400 Fulton Street, Gong living as an anarchist commune in rural France, Crass...) . But mainly its Scrittis attempt to merge the beat group and think-tank that immediately sprung to mind on picking up the mag. Reading, a whole bunch of differences emerged. Clearly, a lot of idealism is involved, but seemingly, nothing approaching the theoretical intensity involved in the Scritti project. All the ...
In my view this essentially speaks to the holdings- versus transaction-based issue with attribution. There is a misperception many hold that daily transaction-based attribution is a superior methodology; the reality is that monthly is sufficient for transaction-based attribution; holdings-based, on the other hand, warrants a consideration for daily in order to improve accuracy. And theres the rub: once we move to daily we need to be able to capture the index details for the corresponding periods. And as noted in the question, even breaking a month into two pieces would require this. And, as correctly noted, not all indices provide daily information.. However, if we employ a transaction-based approach, then we dont have to segment the month nor do we have to worry about index details for the sub periods. By using the beginning sector weights, plus weighted flows (just as we do with Modified Dietz) we can accomplish our objective. The returns, too, have to take into consideration the intra-month ...
From the most minimal of person information, such as a photograph or a sentence, people are able to rapidly infer a multitude of complex personality traits. These social inferences are thought to rely upon cognitive representations of person knowledge (e.g., person schemas and stereotypes) that guide social perception and allow us to infer unseen traits from sparse observations about a person. Cognitive neuroscience research has shown that forming impressions and making mental state inferences relies on the medial prefrontal cortex. The majority of this work has focused on tasks in which participants are explicitly instructed to form impressions or infer thoughts and beliefs; however real-world impression formation usually occurs spontaneously. In this thesis, studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging in combination with model-based and data-driven techniques aim to uncover the central features of peoples representations of other persons. Studies 1 and 2 used movies and visual ...

Oxytocin (OT) has become a focus in investigations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The social deficits that characterize ASD may relate to reduced connectivity between brain sites on the mesolimbic reward pathway (nucleus accumbens; amygdala) that receive OT projections and contribute to social motivation, and cortical sites involved in social perception. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging and a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, we show that OT administration in ASD increases activity in brain regions important for perceiving social-emotional information. Further, OT enhances connectivity between nodes of the brains reward and socioemotional processing systems, and does so preferentially for social (versus nonsocial) stimuli. This effect is observed both while viewing coherent versus scrambled biological motion, and while listening to happy versus angry voices. Our findings suggest a mechanism by which intranasal OT may bolster social motivation-one that could,
Results: Rasch analysis was used to refine the SPaRQ. The result was a 19-item measure divided into two subscales. The 9-item Social Behaviors subscale measured difficulties with performing actions in a social context due to hearing loss. The 10-item Social Perceptions subscale measured negative thoughts and feelings experienced in a social context due to hearing loss. Both Rasch analysis and the traditional psychometric analysis techniques demonstrated that each subscale had strong psychometric properties. In particular, each subscale passed the test of unidimensionality, displayed good fit to the Rasch model, and had high internal consistency. In addition, it was found that, as predicted, each subscale had strong, positive correlations with the hearing-specific questionnaire and moderate, positive correlations with the generic health and disability questionnaire and the depression and anxiety screening questionnaire. Taken together, these findings support the construct validity of the 19-item ...

Information about animal welfare standards and initiatives from eight European countries was collected, grouped, and compared to EU welfare standards to detect those aspects beyond minimum welfare levels demanded by EU welfare legislation. Literature was reviewed to determine the scientific relevance of standards and initiatives, and those aspects going beyond minimum EU standards. Standards and initiatives were assessed to determine their strengths and weaknesses regarding animal welfare. Attitudes of stakeholders in the improvement of animal welfare were determined through a Policy Delphi exercise. Social perception of animal welfare, economic implications of upraising welfare levels, and differences between countries were considered. Literature review revealed that on-farm space allowance, climate control, and environmental enrichment are relevant for all animal categories. Experts assessment revealed that on-farm prevention of thermal stress, air quality, and races and passageways design were not

At a dinner party, are people hanging onto your words or cutting you off mid-sentence? Recent research suggests that differences in social standing may lie in neurons-and how well they function-in the front of your brain.. Fei Wang, a graduate student studying under Hailan Hu at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led the study looking at how brain function affected social standing in mice. What she found is that mice with especially efficient neurons in a part of their brain called the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC)-a region, just behind the forehead, known to be involved with social behavior and decision-making-reliably ranked near the top of the social hierarchy.. Human studies of the mPFC show that it plays a role in social cognition, such as forming judgments of other people or assessing their intentions. A rat study found that damage to the mPFC led to a downturn in social standing. Despite the link between mPFC function and social standing, we had little understanding of what was going on ...
What do I do now? Google recommends you claim your knowledge panel through Google search. This is something Google allowed back in 2016 and still supports. Google posted a help document with clearer instructions on how to update your knowledge panel in Google search.. Why we should care. Many SEOs and web publishers over the years simply used social profile markup to handle these knowledge panels. Now Google says it will figure out these profiles either through your claimed profile or other automated means, but it will no longer look at your markup for this. That means you need to watch your social knowledge panels in search and see if anything changes for your profile or the profiles you manage for your clients.. ...

This study explores the impact of motivation, cognitive resources and difficulty of processing on social judgment. We hypothesized and found all three variables influence the type of information used to render judgment. Only when the information was easy to process, cognitive resources were ample and motivation was high were subjects able to use difficult information as a basis for their judgment. Furthermore, contrary to the common notion that statistical information tends to be utilized when resources are high, we were able to show that subjects relied on statistical information when their motivation was low, the information was difficult to process and/or cognitive resources were limited. These results add to the growing body of evidence attesting that the contents of information as such do not affect the likelihood of their being made use of in judgment. Both base-rates and representativeness (heuristic) information seem to be used in accordance with their subjective relevance - when such ...
Sweaty palms, a racing heart, a faltering voice. Many people find public speaking unpleasant. The mere anticipation of social evaluation increases the activity of almost all body systems related to stress, with particularly strong activation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the human bodys central stress response system. How does the HPA axis respond to feedback we receive from others in these social situations? Positive or negative verbal feedback in response to a speech, such as that was/wasnt good, is known to activate the HPA axis. But until now little scientific inquiry has been conducted into how our bodies respond to purely nonverbal feedback, such as facial expressions.. A new study of nonverbal feedback, published today in Scientific Reports by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Bar-Ilan University, finds that smiles may reduce or increase physical stress depending upon how they are perceived. On the other hand, there is evidence that what we do while we are online can have a significant impact on how likely we are to become depressed. It is not Facebook in itself that makes us feel down, but rather how we use it: with so many people using the site, it is hard to avoid reaching the conclusion that someone somewhere is having a better time than us. As humans we are primed to make social comparisons (Festinger, 1954), but whereas once we would have compared ourselves with the neighbours, we can now compare ourselves with millions of other people across the globe from the comfort of our living rooms, with just the swipe of a finger. Research suggests that men may be more likely to engage in social comparison online (Steers, Wickham, & Acitelli, 2014), and if we compare ourselves to others in a way that leads to feelings of envy, we are more likely to feel depressed (Tandoc, Ferucci, & Duffy, 2015). Feeling depressed may also lead us to engage in greater social comparison (Feinstein et ...
Tests are performed to ensure the donor is cancer-free (Forced me to get up to date on things and to also have that over-50 test many of us avoid - piece of cake!) and that there is not a current medical condition that affects the kidneys such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Special tests determine current kidney function and cardiac wellness. Essentially, ones overall health must be excellent in order to be considered. (No chances are taken when it comes to the well-being of the donor.) The process also involves psycho/social evaluations, and meetings with a nurse practitioner, a dietician, a pharmacist, nephrologists... and requires the development of an ongoing and sometimes frustrating relationship with a donor advocate who works with a recipient advocate, each of whom has the job of protecting patient rights at their own ends of the spectrum, but must also work together using a communicative team approach method necessary to ensure the success of a complicated endeavor such as this. ...
In the initial theory, Festinger provided nine main hypotheses. First, he stated that humans have a basic drive to evaluate their opinions and abilities and that people evaluate themselves through objective, nonsocial means (Hypothesis I).[1] Second, Festinger stated that if objective, nonsocial means were not available, that people evaluate their opinions and abilities by comparison to other people (Hypothesis II).[1] Next, he hypothesized that the tendency to compare oneself to another person decreases as the difference between their opinions and abilities becomes more divergent.[1] In other words, if someone is much different from you, you are less likely to compare yourself to that person (Hypothesis III). He next hypothesized that there is a unidirectional drive upward in the case of abilities, which is largely absent in opinions.[1] This drive refers to the value that is placed on doing better and better.[5] (Hypothesis IV). Next, Festinger hypothesizes that there are non-social restraints ...

The workshop will consider evolutionary science (Eugenicism, craniometry and anthropometry), taking as a starting point the assumption that sociology begins with the death of biological notions of race, whilst recognising that the notion of race continues to maintain significant currency within contemporary society. Together we will explore the pseudoscientific process of racialisation, focusing on how an acceptance of social categories that align with what appear to be natural categories is problematic. For, instance, Aryan supremacy and the subsequent classification of races that presents as contemporary forms of white privilege, will be interrogated through examples drawn from education, popular culture and sport ...
I think the ganja/reggae link is twofold in nature, on the Jamaican side it is clearly part of the history and culture and while not universally used (some of the older generation of producers like King Edwards for example could not abide the herb smoke at all) I imagine it was fairly widespread among musicians/artists...certainly as the rastafari influence strengthened and economic/political realities became worse. On the non-JA side it can be traced back to Blackwell/Branson etc. and their efforts to sell reggae to a white, college age audience looking for a rebellious sort of musical and social scene to get behind. The 60s hippie protest days were over but rock album art was being taken very seriously and these guys knew full well the marketing power of a strong image. At some point some bright bulb must have realized many of these guys liked to smoke, cue the Zippo lighter and spliff cloud filled covers. It worked, at least for a time and this association in the minds of the public has ...
One unusual feature of the cafeteria is its staff, which is actually a small private firm hired by the Whitehead Institute. The head cook trained at Cordon Bleu in London. (Regular readers of this column will recall the contrasting example of another research institute whose chef had trained in a submarine. See AIR 1:3 for details.) Dave, the singing dishwasher, has an occasionally pleasant, untrained baritone voice that is sometimes heard as far away as the Institute s auditorium (a distance of about 75 feet). The cafeteria manager, Jim Nally, is a keen appreciator of the science social scene. Not to dump on scientists, but a lot of them just don t have it together when it comes to ordering food, Nally opined.
