This Distant Learning Unit focuses primarily on balancing the Social Engagement System and the Twelve Cranial Nerves. Dr. Mines clearly identifies the embryology of the Social Engagement system and its evolutionary development in our culture of sensory overload. Students learn how to assess, evaluate and relieve the burden on this formative system and most importantly, how to liberate it from those burdens! This innovative DLU includes three one hour Skype sessions with Dr. Mines to assure accuracy of palpation and hand placement. The interventions are clearly described, step by step. All interventions taught through this process are without contraindications. This Distant Learning Unit is perfect for TARA Approach students and practitioners but it can also be used by massage therapists, parents, and anyone who has a somatic, energy medicine or bodywork practice. Psychotherapists will benefit from understanding the physiology of the Social Engagement System. For those

Does an engaged and active lifestyle in old age alleviate intellectual decline? Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development approached this question by applying a structural equation model for testing dynamic hypotheses to eight-year longitudinal data from the Berlin Aging Study (|i|n|/i| = 516; age range = 70-100+years). Results reveal that, within a bivariate system of perceptual speed and social participation, prior scores of social participation influence subsequent changes in perceptual speed, while the opposite does not hold. Results support the hypothesis that an engaged and active lifestyle in old and very old age has beneficial effects on intellectual development in old age.
Novel stroke rehabilitation approaches, such as task-specific training (TST), have shown promise in improving stroke recovery components such as basic mobility and activities of daily living; however, evidence suggests these improvements are not generalized and transferred to home, community, or work settings, and usually do not impact overall participation outcomes. Further, these treatments are very intense,... Read More → ...

By drawing on STS, Crip Technoscience (Hamraie/Fritsch 2019) and approaches from participatory design research and practice, this event discusses body-technology relations from inter-, transdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. We argue in favor of extending the concept of materiality beyond the borders of the physical object to include practices and relations and consequently, want to question common concepts of norm, normality, and normativity. Because these notions are not only entangled with artefacts but also with their design and the practices they involve, which include bodies embedded in historical, cultural, infrastructural and institutional contexts. Thus, they can be considered situated (Haraway 1988). As a result, questions and demands for inclusion and social participation, too, become virulent (Star 2017, 1999; Winner 1980) and have been problematized as politics of assistive artefacts (Mills 2012). In sum, we propose to re/frame technology and body (differences) as ...

The social activity plan Lets Make Them Smile was finished by our senior brothers and sisters a year ago as Active Citizens to be proceeded by our self as Active Citizens this year. Their goal was conveying satisfaction to a gathering of elders who are isolated from their children and families. Our social activity plan is distinctive. However, when we consider the prime objective behind that Project, it is fairly like our project. That is offering something to individuals, they anticipate to get. Along these lines, this year our group is wanting to develop CBO people group focus at Polwatta, Ampara to build up the surrounding society as a social action plan. This panel will discuss group processes that promote social creativity in science, engineering, arts, and humanities. We will offer positive and negative examples of social creativity projects, while suggesting research directions for dramatically increased social participation. The goal is to develop strategies that would expand resources and opportunities for research and education in social creativity. This requires our community to develop a unified position, then reach out to national science funding agencies, while building the case for the importance of this topic beyond our own community. How can social creativity, collaborative discovery, distributed innovation, and collective intelligence be framed as an international priority to cope with the problems of the 21st century and how can we identify a clear set of research challenges? The theme of technology-mediated social participation is outlined in the white paper for a National Initiative for Social Participation ...

Although social capital has been hypothesized to have positive influence on psychological health, a relationship between social capital dimensions and psychological wellbeing has rarely been found. This longitudinal study investigates the relationship between social participation in associations and self-rated psychological health. The paper uses five waves of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) from 1991 to 1995 (unbalanced panel N=45,761). Ordered logit fixed effect methods were used to study the longitudinal link between structural social capital (being a member, active, and both a member and active in associations) and self-rated psychological health assessed by single items of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) controlling for age, marital status, household size, number of children, education, income, economic status, number of visits to the GP and health problems. The paper shows that being only a member and only active in associations has no statistical relationship with ...

The multivariate analysis was performed by using a logistic regression model to investigate the importance of possible confounders (age, country of origin, education, and snuff consumption) on the differences in daily and intermittent smoking between high versus low social participation, trust, and their four combination categories. The differences in the prevalences of the 13 social participation subitems between the high social ...
It is today widely accepted that participation in social activities contributes towards successful ageing whilst, at the same time, maintaining independence in the activities of daily living (ADLs) is the sine qua non for achieving that end. This study looks at people aged 65 and over living in an urban area in Spain who retain the ability to attend Social Centres providing recreational facilities. The aim of this paper is to quantify independence and identify the risk factors involved in its deterioration. The sample size was calculated using the equation for proportions in finite populations based on a random proportional sample type, absolute error (e) = 0.05, α = 0.05, β = 0.1, p = q = 0.5. Two-stage sampling was used. In the first place, the population was stratified by residence and a Social Centre was randomly chosen for each district. In the second stage, individuals were selected in a simple random sample without replacement in proportion to the number of members at each social centre. A

The course aims to guide young people towards civic participation by showing associative contexts and measuring their technical skills in them.. In this sense, the course is not a traditional exploration of social theory focused on the forms of civic political participation, but rather a laboratory of reading the city as a set of social action contexts, as a set of breeding grounds for generative conflict, exchange between groups and institutions, collective efforts for the management of social change towards horizons of less inequality and so on. The main objective of the course is therefore that students learn to read the possibilities of participation offered in the contexts where they live.. Another very important objective is that students learn to distinguish between the different forms of participation not only for problematic addressed but also for social composition and internal relational modalities. In this sense, at the end of the course students should have the ability to read the ...
The purpose of the study was to analyze whether social relations are related to onset of disability among old people at 1.5 year follow-up and whether these relations vary by age and gender. The study is based on baseline and 1.5 year follow-up data on 1396 older non-disabled adults. Social relations were measured by questions about diversity in social relations, social participation, satisfaction with social relations and instrumental social support. Onset of disability was described as developing need of help in at least one of six mobility activities. The results showed that a large diversity in social relations and high social participation were important factors for maintaining functional ability among the 75-year-old men and women, while social support was a risk factor for functional decline among the 80-year-old men. The present study suggests that being embedded in a strong network of social relations provides protection against disability by reducing risk of developing disability ...

Restrictions in communicative abilities are well known in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but only few approaches in terms of evaluation of supportive technologies have been made. We aimed to assess the use and perceived usability of eye-tracking computer devices (ETCS) of severely impacted patients with ALS in an independent, direct manner and relate it to psychological well-being. ETCS enable active communication and social participation in the quadriplegic and anarthric disease state. Therefore, ETCS-based versions of widely used psychosocial questionnaires (ADI-12, SeiQoL-DW, WHO-5) as well as structured questions on communicative functioning and ETCS usage were developed to assess ALS patients, their next of kin and professional caregivers ...

Downloadable! This paper builds a theory of trust based on informal contract enforcement in social networks. In our model, network connections between individuals can be used as social collateral to secure informal borrowing. We define network-based trust as the highest amount one agent can borrow from another agent, and derive a reduced-form expression for this quantity which we then use in three applications. (1) We predict that dense networks generate bonding social capital that allows transacting valuable assets, while loose networks create bridging social capital that improves access to cheap favors like information. (2) For job recommendation networks, we show that strong ties between employers and trusted recommenders reduce asymmetric information about the quality of job candidates. (3) Using data from Peru, we show empirically that network-based trust predicts informal borrowing, and we structurally estimate and test our model.
