Information diffusion in online social networks has received attention in both research and actual applications. The prevalence of online social networking sites offers the possibility of mining for necessary information. However, existing influence maximization algorithms and newly proposed influence diffusion models do not distinguish between seed nodes (or pilot users) and nonseed nodes and assume all nodes are cooperative in propagating influence. This thesis investigates models and heuristics for noncooperative information diffusion in online social networks. It consists of three parts: tragedy of the commons in online social search (OSS), influence maximization in noncooperative social networks under the linear threshold model (LTM), and influence maximization in noncooperative social networks under the independent cascade model (ICM). Firstly, the tragedy of the commons problem in OSS is considered. I propose an analytical model that captures the behavior of OSS nodes, and, from a ...

Online social networking usage is growing rapidly, especially among at-risk populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM). However, little research has studied the relationship between online social networking usage and sexual risk behaviors among at-risk populations. One hundred and eighteen Facebook-registered MSM (60.1% Latino, 28% African American; 11.9% other) were recruited from online (social networking websites and banner advertisements) and offline (local clinics, restaurants and organizations) venues frequented by minority MSM. Inclusion criteria required participants to be men who were 18 years of age or older, had had sex with a man in the past 12 months, were living in Los Angeles, and had a Facebook account. Participants completed an online survey on their social media usage and sexual risk behaviors. Results from a multivariable regression suggest that number of sexual partners met from online social networking technologies is associated with increased: 1) likelihood of having
Political debate concerning moralized issues is increasingly common in online social networks. However, moral psychology has yet to incorporate the study of social networks to investigate processes by which some moral ideas spread more rapidly or broadly than others. Here, we show that the expression of moral emotion is key for the spread of moral and political ideas in online social networks, a process we call "moral contagion." Using a large sample of social media communications about three polarizing moral/political issues (n = 563,312), we observed that the presence of moral-emotional words in messages increased their diffusion by a factor of 20% for each additional word. Furthermore, we found that moral contagion was bounded by group membership; moral-emotional language increased diffusion more strongly within liberal and conservative networks, and less between them. Our results highlight the importance of emotion in the social transmission of moral ideas and also demonstrate the utility of ...
This study explores the potential of promoting college students positive psychological development using popular online social networks. Online social networks have dramatically changed the ways college students manage their social relationships. Social network activities, such as checking Facebook posts dominates students Internet time and has the potential to assist students positive development. Positive psychology is a scientific study of how ordinary individuals can apply their strength effectively when facing objective difficulties and how this capability can be cultivated with certain approaches. A positive message delivery approach was designed for a group of new college entrants. A series of positive messages was edited by university counselors and delivered by students to their Facebook social groups. Responses from each posted positive messages were collected and analyzed by researchers. The responses indicated that: (1) relationships of individual engagement and social influence in this
Our investigation made clear the potential social networks have for inferring information about non-members. The results are also astonishing because they are based on mere contact data", emphasises Prof. Hamprecht. Many social network platforms, however, have far more data about users, such as age, income, education, or where they live. Using this data, a corresponding technical infrastructure and other structural properties of network analysis, the researchers believe that the prediction accuracy could be significantly improved. "Overall our project illustrates that we as a society have to come to an understanding about the extent to which relational data about persons who did not provide their consent may be used", says Prof. Zweig. The results of the research were published in "PLoS ONE ...

With the growing increase in the use of the internet in most parts of the world today, users generate significant amounts of online text on different platforms such as online social networks, product review websites, travel blogs, to name just a few. The variety of content on these platforms has made them an important resource for researchers to gauge user activity, determine their opinions and analyze their behavior, without having to perform monetarily and temporally expensive surveys. Gaining insights into user behavior enables us to better understand their likes and dislikes, which in turn is helpful for economic purposes such as marketing, advertising and recommendations. Further, owing to the fact that online social networks have recently been instrumental in socio-political revolutions such as the Arab Spring, and for awareness-generation campaigns by MoveOn.org and Avaaz.org, analysis of online data can uncover user preferences. The overarching goal of this Ph.D. thesis is to pose some ...

Networking the Environment: Social Network Analysis in Human-Environmental Relations. Isabel Díaz Reviriego (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain), Laura Calvet Mir (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain), Matthieu Salpeteur (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain) & Victoria Reyes García (ICREA and Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain). In the last decade scholars have started to apply social networks to the analysis of human-environment relations. This body of research, interdisciplinary in its nature, has analyzed a) how social organization in networks helps explain the management of natural resources, and b) how Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) is transmitted through such networks.. First, social network analysis has enabled scientists to understand the relation between structural characteristics of social processes (such as different levels of collaboration and processes of social learning) and features linked to the resilience of complex socio-ecological systems (such as ...

On-line social networks, such as Facebook, are increasingly utilized by many users. These networks allow people to publish details about themselves and connect to their friends. Some of the information revealed inside these networks is private and it is possible that corporations could use learning algorithms on the released data to predict undisclosed private information. In this paper, we explore how to launch inference attacks using released social networking data to predict undisclosed private information about individuals. We then explore the effectiveness of possible sanitization techniques that can be used to combat such inference attacks under different scenarios. social network data could be used to predict some individual private trait that a user is not willing to disclose (e.g., political or religious affiliation) and explore the effect of possible data sanitization alternatives on preventing such private information leakage. To our knowledge this is the first comprehensive paper ...
Dr. Jennifer Tour Chayes. Distinguished Scientist, Managing Director of Microsoft Research New England and Microsoft Research NYC. See keynote in Agenda Planner. NETWORK SCIENCE: FROM THE MASSIVE ONLINE NETWORKS TO CANCER GENOMICS Everywhere we turn these days, we find massive data sets that are appropriately described as networks. In the high tech world, we see the Internet, the World Wide Web, mobile phone networks, a variety of online social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn, and massive online networks of users and products like Netflix and Amazon. In economics, we are increasingly experiencing both the positive and negative effects of a global networked economy. In epidemiology, we find disease spreading over our ever growing social networks, complicated by mutation of the disease agents. In biomedical research, we are beginning to understand the structure of gene regulatory networks, with the prospect of using this understanding to manage many human diseases. In this talk, I will look ...
This one-week course offers a hands-on introduction to the concepts and methods of social network analysis (SNA) using the statistical program R. Depending on research interests and data availability, researchers commonly look at networks of different sizes and degrees of complexity. In this class we will learn about tools to analyze these various types of networks. This will include egocentric networks (e.g. my own friends and family) and complete networks of various sizes: e.g. friendship ties in a school class, communication networks of an organization, and large-scale, complex networks like co-citation networks of scientists or interaction networks on social networking websites. The course will combine lecture/seminar style presentations of the instructor with lab sessions in which students work on empirical exercises using R. In addition to R, we will use the open source program Visone for the visualization of networks. Visone works in combination with R.. ...
This important issue of New Directions for Evaluation highlights social network analysis (SNA) methodology and its application within program evaluation. The application of SNA is relatively new for mainstream evaluation, and like most other innovations, it has yet to be fully explored in this field. The volume aims to fill the gaps within SNA methodology exploration by first reviewing the foundations and development of network analysis within the social sciences and the field of evaluation. The focus then turns to the methodology. Who holds power in a network, and what measures indicate whether that power is direct or indirect? Which subgroups have formed, and where are they positioned in an organization? How divided is an organization? Who forms the core of a collaboration, and where are the experts in an organization? These are the types of common questions explored in the four case studies of the use of network analysis within an evaluative framework. These cases are diverse in their ...
Extant research suggests that there is a strong social component to Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) adoption since professional networks amongst physicians are strongly associated with their attitudes towards EBM. Despite this evidence, it is still unknown whether individual attitudes to use scientific evidence in clinical decision-making influence the position that physicians hold in their professional network. This paper explores how physicians attitudes towards EBM is related to the network position they occupy within healthcare organizations. Data pertain to a sample of Italian physicians, whose professional network relationships, demographics and work-profile characteristics were collected. A social network analysis was performed to capture the structural importance of physicians in the collaboration network by the means of a core-periphery analysis and the computation of network centrality indicators. Then, regression analysis was used to test the association between the network position of
The international evidence indicates that, while the prevalence of smoking per se has decreased, social smoking- smoking intermittently or only in given situations-has increased among young adults, say the authors.. The authors carried out in-depth interviews in 2011 with 13 "social smokers," aged between 19 and 25, who were recruited through the online social network Facebook, via posters in cafes, supermarkets, and on community notice boards.. Analysis of the interview transcripts identified that social smokers often had conflicted identities. Participants found it very difficult to reconcile their stated identity as non-smokers…who smoke. They managed this conflict by limiting where and when they smoked, and by sharply differentiating themselves from smokers, to whom, by and large, they felt superior.. Their demarcation strategies included claiming they never smoke alone; asserting that they controlled when, where, and how much they smoked, and defining smoking as "a temporary ...
Can online, social networks really help people stop smoking?. This is what 100 experts came together to discuss in a 2-day workshop in Washington, D.C. The result was a proposed research agenda on online social networks and smoking cessation. The group proposes 34 questions they deem most pressing in four categories: advancing theory, understanding fundamental mechanisms, intervention approaches, and evaluation.. This was 2010.. There is A Need. We are on the edge of 2013. And while the Web is ubiquitous-making qualms between offline and online approaches somewhat void when we should be looking at the overall customer experience…Were still working to better understand many of the questions proposed:. ...

Information diffusion in online social networks is affected by the underlying network topology, but it also has the power to change it. Online users are constantly creating new links when exposed to new information sources, and in turn these links are alternating the way information spreads. However, these two highly intertwined stochastic processes, information diffusion and network evolution, have been predominantly studied separately, ignoring their co-evolutionary dynamics. We propose a temporal point process model, COEVOLVE, for such joint dynamics, allowing the intensity of one process to be modulated by that of the other. This model allows us to efficiently simulate interleaved diffusion and network events, and generate traces obeying common diffusion and network patterns observed in real-world networks. Furthermore, we also develop a convex optimization framework to learn the parameters of the model from historical diffusion and network evolution traces. We experimented with both ...

For the past century we have compartmentalized the life of the citizen. At work, the citizen is an employee. Outside the office he may be a consumer. Sometimes she is referred to as a taxpayer. All of these are constraining labels, ignoring the full spectrum of citizenship. As the network era connects people and things, society needs to reconnect with the multifaceted citizen. This is the primary role the smart city can play.. The last centurys division of work and personal life are still evident in many organizations where employees are cut off from their online social networks. Workers are often expected to put their personal lives aside and concentrate on the work at hand for eight or more hours per day. But as we have connected computers and devices, we have made standardized work obsolete. In the emerging workplace, where complex and creative tasks become the norm, work cannot remain isolated from the rest of the world.. Complex work requires multiple perspectives and non-linear ...

Tuesday, 14 February 2012. Valentines Day might be the day to woo the object of your affection, but for bosses, February 14 is getting more and more treacherous by the year.. Thats because the cards and flowers which staff would occasionally use to reveal their affection for a colleague are now being replaced with messages sent over online social networks, emails or text messages.. And for employers, that makes it all the more difficult to monitor the first signs of an online romance or, worse, of inappropriate jokes or harassment.. Peter Mooney, head of employment law for business support specialist, ELAS, said: "Valentines Day might be the most romantic day of the year for some, but for many employers and managers it can be a real headache.. "No matter how heartfelt the affections are - and sometimes theyre far from genuine - if a message is capable of causing offence, then it can quickly become a serious matter.. "For that reason, its difficult to define in advance what is acceptable and ...
