Reviewed by Justin McNab and Stephen Leeder. Menzies Centre for Health Policy, School of Public Health, University of Sydney, New South Wales. Warwick Bruntons history of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, illustrates the conundrum of writing engaging history. On the one hand, careful research and meticulous attention to the facts are necessary for an accurate account, but on the other hand this can create a narrative burdened with detail. For staff and students of the department, both past and present, Bruntons history will hold great interest and a more general academic audience will recognise the depressing machinations of university life.. The first half of the book, from 1886 to the late 1950s, concerns the public health interests, research, health and community-based activities of the early chairs of the department, from the first chair, Frank Ogston, through Sydney Champtaloup, Charles Hercus to Cyril Dixon. It also ...

As new discoveries in the biomedical sciences make it increasingly possible to identify individuals whose characteristics, whether genetic, psychological, biological or behavioural, put them at risk of diverse health problems, it is important to keep in mind that health is also a function of the broader social context.1 2 In this captivating new book, Stephen J. Kunitz reminds us of the constant tension between our individual destinies and the communities in which we live.3. Part I of the book describes contemporary theories of disease causation. Chapter 1 discusses the emergence of two opposing schools of thought following the Industrial Revolution: the New Public Health, which used scientific objectivity to highlight individuals responsibility in promoting their own well-being, and the New social medicine, which laid the social environment at … ...
If Indian people face a myriad health problems, hundreds of individuals and organisations are looking for the way forward. Academic academic and research institutions such as the Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (http://http://www.jnu.ac.in/sss/csmch.html ), and the Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT), Mumbai (www.cehat.org) -- whose publications are the basis for a number of the points made in Section IV -- have provided vital documentation and analysis of the health scene.Voluntary organisations (see Stories of Change in this section) have provided services as well as demonstrated the effectiveness of innovative strategies and inexpensive models of health care. Some have promoted the value of indigenous systems of medicine which are both more accessible and perhaps less harmful. Others have provided support services for disability groups. Earle C. Chambers, PhD, MPH. August 30, 2015 - BRONX, NY - Public housing, originally developed to provide stable housing for low-income families, has become synonymous with concentrated poverty. Programs to reduce poverty have focused on dismantling public housing to be replaced, if at all, by mixed-income-design alternatives.. Studies have shown that low-income residents living in public housing have deleterious health outcomes. It is not clear, however, how public housing residents fare on a number of cardiovascular health indicators compared to those with an alternate low-income housing arrangement. Mechanistic models that incorporate housing with neighborhood access to resources and individual behaviors are poorly defined and understood.. A study by Dr. Earle Chambers (Department of Family and Social Medicine), published in the August 2015 Journal of Urban Health, examines individual- and neighborhood- level data to address cardiovascular disease in low-income populations. Dr. Chambers ...

The CEPH component of Essentials combines teaching of core skills of clinical epidemiology (biostatistics, study design, and critical reasoning) as they apply to the care of individuals and populations with an introduction to key public and population health topics. An overarching goal is to provide students with an appreciation of the health and well-being of individual patients and those of populations as a continuum; and to understand that improving health may involve interventions by clinicians, public health authorities, and other sectors with impact on health. In studying clinical epidemiology, we focus on interpreting and applying evidence about the occurrence and natural history of disease and on comparing the relative benefits and risks of different methods of prevention and treatment. Studying statistical principles helps us to understand how uncertainty affects our interpretation of data and clinical decisions. These skills are essential as consumers of the medical literature for ...

More and more P&S students are seeking to learn about lived experiences of illness and health care through qualitative research using in-depth interviews, focus groups, and life histories with persons. Certainly, many of the students doing Scholarly Projects in the Narrative & Social Medicine track are proposing such projects. Their proposals range from wanting to interview sugar-cane harvesters in the Dominican Republic about their health care needs to learning about the lives of very ill children living with cystic fibrosis or recovering from severe burns. All such projects require disciplined and rigorous training in qualitative research methods. Conducting an in-depth interview, performing ethnographic field work, moderating a focus group, and then knowing what to do with the transcribed conversations require the kind of training that anthropologists or sociologists receive. Because of the importance of asking the kinds of health-related questions that can only be answered with qualitative ...

Fatal bicycle accidents were analyzed regarding general and traumatological aspects with the intent to recognize risks and certain threats, to gain evidence for prevention of fatal accidents and to contribute to the decrease in the number of accidents and injuries. The research is based on a retrospective analysis of autopsy reports, prosecutor investigation files and the police accident records regarding all fatal casualties and forensic autopsied bicyclists in Berlin from 1993 2004 coming from the forensic medicine institutions of the Freie Universitaet, the Humboldt Universitaet and the regional institute for forensic and social medicine in Berlin. Those cases make up 73,5% of all fatally injured bicyclists in Berlin from 1993 2004. The amendment of the traffic regulations for bicyclists of 1998 occurred within this time frame so that the period before and after the amendment was regarded. The essence of this amendment was the cancellation of the general obligation to use the special bicycle ...

There is strong evidence that alcohol causes seven cancers, and other evidence indicates that it probably causes more, according to a new literature review published online July 21 in Addiction.. Epidemiologic evidence supports a causal association of alcohol consumption and cancers of the oropharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum, and female breast, says Jennie Connor, MB, ChB, MPH, from the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, University of Otago, in Dunegin, New Zealand.. In short, alcohol causes cancer.. This is not news, says Dr Connor. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and other agencies have long identified alcohol consumption as being causally associated with these seven cancers.. So why did Dr Connor, who is an epidemiologist and physician, write a new review? Because she wants to clarify the strength of the evidence in an accessible way.. There is confusion about the statement, Alcohol causes cancer, explains Dr Connor.. Public and ...
Bristol, United Kingdom: Clinical evidence indicating that marijuana use may be casually linked to incidences of schizophrenia or other psychological harms is not compelling, according to a scientific review published online by the journal Addiction.. Investigators at the University of Bristol, Department of Social Medicine assessed the potential health risks of cannabis, particularly whether use of the drug may be causally linked with mental illness.. Authors wrote: We continue to take the view that the evidence that cannabis use causes schizophrenia is neither very new, nor by normal criteria, particularly compelling. … For example, our recent modeling suggests that we would need to prevent between 3000 and 5000 cases of heavy cannabis use among young men and women to prevent one case of schizophrenia, and that four or five times more young people would need to avoid light cannabis use to prevent a single schizophrenia case. … We conclude that the strongest evidence of a possible causal ...

The Biden Administration and Congress seek immediate measures to improve peoples lives. Our dysfunctional politics being what they are, immediate help is best provided through simple things that can be passed by majority vote within budget reconciliation. Fortunately, with one sentence, we can fix one of the stupidest and cruelest regulations in American social policy-one that forces millions of Americans with disabilities to remain in poverty.. That sentence would raise the $2,000 countable financial asset limit for eight million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, most of whom live with significant disabilities. Under this rule, youre allowed to keep your home, a vehicle, your wedding ring, and some personal effects. And thats pretty much it. Beyond these, your checking account, your retirement, and your other financial assets cant add up to more than $2,000, and $3,000 for a married couple.. The limits original purpose was to prevent SSI from becoming a universal entitlement. ...
