Biblical Teaching on Social Justice - Micah Global
Justice is at the very heart of the Christian faith, even though this fact is yet to be understood by many Christians. Christians as light and salt to the world have a role in social justice for bringing the needed transformation.. In order to understand what Bible teaches about justice, it is necessary to set the term in the context of relationships. Social justice is relation between individuals, communities, nations and the poor. The problem of social justice today is that some people are radically dependent on and controlled by others, as a result they are not free and do not have the right to self determination. Some people are denied the right to participate fully in public life; as a result they do not have the opportunity to fight for their rights. Some people live in indigent poverty, as a result while the rich have more than enough to satisfy their wants the poor do not have sufficient to satisfy their basic needs. This paper examines what social justice is and how it is dealt with ...

Social Justice and Pope Francis: Choosing Freedom Over Serfdom
Having spent most of his life in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis has given proof that he can rise above his environment. As his compatriot Bishop Alberto Bochatey remarked, he is a man of few words. I lived half of my life in Buenos Aires. Few things are more difficult there than finding leaders with his humble demeanor and his preference of teaching by example. Most in his native Argentina have been captured by a political and economic environment ruled by a government dominated social justice mentality. Hopefully, Pope Francis will also rise above his culture and help recover a different type of social justice, which was nurtured and developed by members of his religious order.. From the moment that the term social justice became a mandatory term in the lingo of Argentine politicians, the country went down the hill. This was during the mid-1940s, when Col. Juan Domingo Perón created the Justicialista or the Justice party. Perón, an admirer of Benito Mussolini, was following his ...

[email protected]. As pressure around issues of equity increases on college campuses, academic advisors are challenged to grow their social justice skillsets. Tracy Davis and Laura M. Harrison provide both a starting point for advisors new to this type of work and opportunities for further exploration for those who have already gathered a basic understanding of social justice topics.. Davis and Harrison are upfront about what readers can expect from the book and they deliver on their promises to provide both a strong theoretical framework as well as practical ideas for professionals to use on their campuses. They are also open throughout about the limitations of the book and the fact that it cannot be an all-encompassing guide to social justice issues, particularly as this information is ever-evolving. They humbly share stories of their own missteps and are careful to provide specific lists of resources that practitioners may want to seek out to continue their exploration of equity issues. ...

What are Social Justice Bards? - Social Justice Bards
The Social Justice Bards are a group of live streamers, musicians, storytellers and other creatives that try to celebrate art in the face of mental illness, a terrifying political climate, and a world that we cant always control. Sometimes, just being yourself is a radical act and being proud of that might be the light someone needs to see.. Our sigil is a parallel lute and quill, a call for creating equality with our words and music. Social Justice Bards aim to punch up, speak truth to power and oppression, and lighten hearts if we can. Idealistic? Hell yes. We have to keep believing something will matter.. While many of us met on Twitch, weve expanded beyond that as weve made new friends at sci-fi cons, gigs, and other areas in meatspace. Weve developed as a geeky, creative networking group with members all across the USA and beyond and host a behind-the-scenes Discord for collaboration, support, lead sharing, and connecting with other artsy types and fans alike.. ...

School Choice and Social Justice - Oxford Scholarship
Defends a theory of social justice for education from within an egalitarian version of liberalism. The theory involves a strong commitment to educational equality, and to the idea that childrens rights include a right to personal autonomy. The book argues that school reform must always be evaluated from the perspective of social justice and applies the theory, in particular, to school choice proposals. It looks at the parental choice schemes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in England and Wales, and argues that they fall short of the requirements of justice, but that not all such schemes must do so. It elaborates an abstract voucher scheme that would combine choice with justice, and offers ways by which actual choice‐based reform can be modified to meet the requirements of justice.

The Future is Female: Empowering women through social justice!
The violation of womens rights through substantial, emotive and sexual turbulence against women has become a common topic of discussion. Violence against women has taken exceptionally critical forms in situations where populations by the time mentioned has already marginalized, distressed by armed collision and areas experiencing mass shift. There is therefore an urgent need for the judiciary to understand and discuss the exact and circumstantial framework of violence imposed with reference to women who are over and over again marginalized by caste, sex, creed, class, religion or in positional competition. The womens social justice enterprise and ambition therefore, is the involvement of governmental chain of lawyers and social revolutionary, accepting the law and canon to protest all forms of gender based injustice and violence against women and to expand womens avenue to the justice systematization as an integral apparatus to their empowerment.. . An important countenance of social justice ...

She spoke about how the work changed her, and her ever-growing deep pride in her family which now has yet another generation of social justice warriors coming up.. ...

The Social Justice Movement as a Competing Religious Worldview - ldsphilosopher
When social justice advocates dismiss the Book of Mormon as racist, they miss out on the beautiful egalitarian ideals contained within the book. The Book of Mormon shows us two peoples (possibly of different races) who were primed to be enemies forever, but who instead found total harmony and unity through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When they finally did disintegrate into total warfare, it was along ideological lines, not racial lines.. When social justice advocates insist that we change our doctrines and allow same-sex couples to be married in the temple, they are essentially making women superfluous in Gods eternal plan for His children. If men dont need women (and vice versa) - if two men can achieve exaltation and eternal posterity without any help of women - then we are essentially rendering women redundant (and vice versa).. What they miss is that in our doctrine of eternal marriage, we establish that gender is not some superficial characteristic, but something beautiful and vital about ...

Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability. - United Nations. Today, the 20th of February 2020, we join the United Nations in the commemoration of the World Day of Social Justice: a day for us as a young lawyers association, for us as lawyers and, more generally, for us as members of society, to raise awareness on the pursuit of social justice by promoting the human development and human dignity of all. Social Justice - Lilys Legacy Project
I came to my Judaism through social justice. I worked for liberal Judaism for I guess, a couple of years. I ended up applying for a job that was working as an organiser with citizens UK with two of their member institutions, and one of them was liberal Judaism. So I became a liberal Judaism social justice worker for a couple of years, which meant that I spent some time in the Montagu Centre in the office, and also that I visited a lot of LJ communities and I had one project that I was involved with, which was the Abrahams Tent project with South London liberal, which was a project that South London Liberal had been very involved in campaigning for Lambeth Council to admit Syrian refugees to the council. And when Rabbi Janet Darley retired, the synagogue decided in her honour to convert a flat in the building. The building is an old school building. Theyve converted a disused caretakers flat in the building to be a home for a Syrian refugee family. So we had a family arrive and theyve just ...

60.00. Reviewed by Daniel R. George, Ph.D, M.Sc, and Peter J. Whitehouse, MD, Ph.D. Comedian Stephen Colbert, who plays a faux archconservative on the popular show The Colbert Report, has famously joked, Reality has a well-known liberal bias. So too might this clever turn of phrase apply to the field of public health, which has for centuries held as self-evident that if human suffering is to be reduced there must necessarily be greater attention and resources aimed at addressing the social injustices that disproportionately affect poor citizens. And indeed, in the last 300 years, the biggest gains in human health have occurred because advocates have successfully fought for improved infrastructure, the provision and protection of human rights, and the creation of economic, educational, and electoral opportunities, particularly for the poor and disenfranchised.. The very title of Public Health and Social Justice, a volume edited by Martin T. Donohoe, embraces the liberal bias of public health ...

The article examines the convergences and contrasts between social epidemiology, social medicine, and human rights approaches toward advancing global health and health equity. The first section describes the goals and work of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health. The second section discusses the role of human rights in the Commissions work. The third section evaluates, from the perspective of social epidemiology, two rights-based approaches to advancing health and health equity as compared to a view that focuses more broadly on social justice. The concluding section identifies four areas where social epidemiologists, practitioners of social medicine, and health and human rights advocates can and must work together in order to make progress on health and health equity.. ...
retired docs thoughts: The U.S. medical care boondoggle depends on hookwinking the physicians
The medical progressives claim to being egalitarian advocates of social justice is contradicted by their advocacy for a utilitarian approach to the allocation of these finite resources. Utilitarianism is not a subset of egalitarianism.A leading egalitarian, John Rawls accurately characterizes utilitarianism as being inattentive to the separateness of individuals and treating people merely as means for the achievement of some aggregate or social end. The medical progressives claim to promote social justice in the abstract but operationally sponsor utilitarian calculus in which some individuals may suffer to further some alleged statistical benefit to the collective. The progressives play the social justice card frequently in their polemics profiting from this polymorphic notions lack of generally agreed upon specificity - the term social justice is loose , vague and indeterminate ...

14 Best Feminist Books To Take Away For College : Pretty Progressive
Womens Activism, Feminism, and Social Justice (Oxford University Press, 2019) develops a comprehensive framework for social justice for women globally. Addressing pressing contemporary issues such as cross-cultural judgements about women and gender equality, this brand new book offers a framework for social justice that applies transnationally, and in specific locations.. Attentive to economic inequality and exploitation, as well as social and cultural discrimination and marginalization, this book grounds its theory of social justice in real life examples of grassroots womens organizations in India. Drawing on the strategies of two non-governmental organizations-the Self-Employed Womens Association and MarketPlace India- that have made impacts on social and political change, the author argues that developing leadership, self-confidence and mobilizing collective action can be significant tools for producing positive social and political changes.. Pointing out that many feminist interventions ...

Milwaukee Evaluation! Week: Lessons in Culturally Responsive Evaluation from the Executive Board by Nicole Robinson, Emily...
In the past few years we have focused on field building initiatives centered around building the capacity of evaluators to incorporate culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) and social justice into their practice. We see this goal as paramount to create a thriving field ready to respond to the evaluation needs of a multicultural world. This past year, during our flagship event, the Social Justice & Evaluation conference, is where we promoted this work. We provided CRE 101 sessions in addition to sessions helping evaluators address isms during the evaluation process from start to finish, how to assess what the current political climate can impact evaluation and the people we serve, or how social justice can be infused into practices such as results-based accountability.. Lessons Learned:. We recently administered a survey to Wisconsin evaluators and asked them about how much they use CRE. The full results will be shared in the future, but we can share a couple points for discussion. For ...
Toxic injustice in the Bangladesh water sector: a social inequities perspective on arsenic contamination | Water Policy | IWA...
Arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh poses a major environmental health hazard to millions. The efforts of public health programmes to address the problem have often been short-lived and unevenly distributed. The crisis represents a failure of governance and a structural injustice of global dimensions. Rights-based approaches to development have been proposed to address such problems. This paper explores the implications of framing the arsenic problem in terms of social justice and human rights. It describes the efforts of the Arsenic Mitigation and Research Foundation to implement drinking water supplies and health support schemes with marginalised communities. The approach was never explicitly framed as rights-based, but focuses instead on social mobilisation and on securing fundamental human needs. We argue that this will be conducive to social justice, which in turn creates the necessary space for pursuing human rights claims. ...

Events and Martyrdom | Al-Abbas | Books on Islam and Muslims | Al-Islam.org
Al-Abbas was in the vigor of his youth watching all these events and waiting for the future. After the assassination of Othman, it was for the first time that the people could express their opinions freely and select the fittest - Ali ibn Abi-Talib, the one selected by the Heavens for the leadership of the Muslims. The armed forces and all the classes of people all over the provinces of the Islamic State selected Imam Ali for the leadership of the state, except people of Damascus and a few individuals of Medina who understood that Imam Ali would refuse their monopoly and thus would extend the very required social justice all over the Islamic state.. As expected, Imam Ali adopted and applied policies of constructive and comprehensive justice to everybody. He preferred the general interests to the private and dedicated all efforts to the achievement of an ideal social justice and to the eradication of poverty. He also adopted the course of extending principles of freedoms so as to create ...

1/1: Ethics Day--Day to commit to cultivating personal honor. [Using reason and compassion to determine what is right and what is wrong, choose to do right: do what is right despite pressure/orders to do otherwise; do what is right even when no authority would require it; do what is right even when no one would know of it; do what is right even when it would cost money, take time, require effort, or exact sacrifice; do what is right even when wrongdoing will not be punished; and make atonement for harm done even when it is not required. Take responsibility for your words and actions (and silence and inaction). And demand the same from your government and religious leaders.] [Neither temptation, perceived need, past wrongs, the compulsion of addiction, nor the impaired judgment of intoxication excuse wrongdoing.] * 1/1: Day the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect freeing Confederate slaves (1863); day to mourn African victims of slavery and racism (past and present), make peace, and ...
Abortion - a matter of human rights and social justice - Women on Web
In countries where abortion is legal and available, abortion is an extremely safe procedure. Making abortion illegal does not reduce the number of abortions; it simply reduces the safety of abortion. According to The World Health Organization (WHO) 20 million of the 42 million abortions performed every year are illegal and unsafe. In every country, it is young, rural and low-income women who bear the most suffering from unsafe abortion. These women are often already mothers, struggling to support the children they already have. With no safe options, women try to abort using sharp instruments or unsafe chemicals, or they seek help from people with no medical training. As a result, a woman dies of an unsafe abortion every 10 minutes (about 47 000 women every year).. Death from unsafe abortion is totally preventable. Worldwide more than 1/3 of all pregnancies are unplanned. Every year nearly 1/4 of all pregnant women worldwide choose to have an abortion (approximately 42 million women annually). ...
Vol. 42-3/4: Mexican and Chicanx Social Movements | Social Justice
edited by Maylei Blackwell and Edward J. McCaughan. This special double issue brings together the work of scholars and activists from Mexico and the United States, representing a variety of disciplines and movements, to discuss current trends in the scholarship and practices of Mexican and Chicanx social movements. The editors sought to critically assess new developments in the social movements of Greater Mexico. The volume incorporates a multigenerational conversation between left activists and scholars of the 1960s and 1970s and later generations of activists, including those in current movements. It pays attention to the multiple modes of power and possibility produced by movements and analyzes how power is organized around racial, classed, sexual, and gendered axes within society and within social movements. Articles reveal how youth organizers in the immigrant rights movement and the Oaxacan popular uprising challenged the way of doing politics, leading to important innovations in social ...
Pope Francis And Black Lives Matter: For African-Americans, Pope US Visit Puts Focus On Social Justice And Racial Disparity
Pope Francis is applauded as he arrives to give his speech to the U.S. Congress, in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 24 2015. Photo: Reuters/Tony Gentile During two separate speeches in Washington, the pope evoked the legacy of King, the Protestant civil rights leader whose campaign for full civil and political rights for African-Americans helped the country dream of a better future. That dream continues to inspire us all, Francis told Congress.. But one day earlier, he acknowledged that the nation had not reached the symbolic mountaintop that King once preached about. To use a telling phrase of the Rev. Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note, and now is the time to honor it, the pope said Wednesday at the White House.. Black leaders across the nation said they found the pontiffs theme of civil rights inspiring. Bishop Shelton Fabre of the Houma-Thibodaux diocese, just outside New Orleans, attended Francis address to a joint session of Congress on Capitol Hill ...

HCV Research and News: What a Year for Harm Reduction!
Western Regional Director, Harm Reduction Coalition. Posted: 12/22/2013 9:16 am. Harm reduction is a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs. Harm reduction is also a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Although those working in harm reduction believe that drug criminalization maximizes harm, the focus of most harm reduction policy and practice is in the borderlands between legalization and prohibition. To quote an old social justice slogan, harm reduction is the art of building a new society in the vacant lots of the old. And those lots are filling up, due to the hard work of people around the world. Here are 10 of the most important harm reduction developments in North America in 2013:. 1. Needle Exchange in the US Turns 25. A quarter of a century ago, public health activists started doing needle exchange in Tacoma, WA, San Francisco, CA, and New York, NY. These ...
Social Justice Archives - Page 2 of 46 - CitizenVox
In 2015, the U.S. Government Accountability Office documented a stark reality for military whistleblowers who challenge the retaliation they face for bravely reporting waste, fraud, and abuse. These servicemembers endure lengthy delays in their cases and are rarely successful when they file retaliation complaints.. One of the most significant reforms contained in the final NDAA is a prohibition of retaliatory investigations against whistleblowers. This victory is important - prolonged investigations serving only to harass and intimidate individuals for exposing corruption have devastating effects for these whistleblowers and their families. By closing this loophole, lawmakers have greatly expanded existing protections for military whistleblowers.. Preserving the Freedom of Information Act. Due to pushback from open government advocates, lawmakers removed provisions from the NDAA that would have limited the applicability of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Not only were these new proposed ...

Religious Values, Legal Ethics, and Poverty Law: A Response to Thomas by Stephen Wizner
Stephen Wizner provides a response to Thomas Shaffers article on his pursuit of social justice through using religious figures as role models. Wizner argues that Shaffer is clearly right in asserting that there is much in the prophetic literature, and, indeed, in the entire Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, that could serve as a moral impetus for social justice lawyering. One can find considerable support for Shaffers religious thesis in the texts that he cites, and in the words of the prophets he looks to as role models. Nevertheless, Wizner presents a skeptical response to Professor Shaffers thoughtful essay. He argues for skepticism for using religion as a blueprint for what is to be done in law.

Secular Pro-Life Perspectives: Preborn Rights are a Social Justice Issue
Then what are we then? Humans belong to the kingdom animalia. That is what science says on the matter and medical science clearly says the unborn are members of the human species. That doesnt mean though, they deserve rights of any sort. This is the problem with most of the pro life movement who state the science but then dont state why they should be persons (entities with a moral right to life) instead, they completely skip that and go straight to moral claims and get snotty saying thats not scientific even though whatever the pro choicer could be using to grant a right to life to lets say off of theory of mind. That can indeed be objectively measured through science so pro lifers cant say thats not scientific because it is indeed. When challenged for example on why can we kill the pig for food but not the average ordinary human? They cant say because it is a human because that claim doesnt really specify why we cant kill this entity for food. A animal rights activist ...
