The International Social Justice Project (ISJP) is a collaborative effort among 13 countries to conduct a comparative study of popular perceptions of economic and social justice in advanced industrialized nations. For this collection, the 1996 and 2000 merged data includes only the country of Germany. The survey, which employed standardized survey procedures and data collection instruments across all countries, focused on normative social justice concepts such as entitlement, equality of economic opportunity, and reward distribution. The study design provides analysis of normative justice at a micro level, involving respondents evaluation of justice or rewards received by individuals and small groups, and at a macro level, through the evaluation of fairness of reward distribution at the aggregate or societal level. Variables in the dataset include demographic characteristics of the respondent, such as age, sex, marital status, education, employment, and occupation. In this survey, occupation ...

Defends a theory of social justice for education from within an egalitarian version of liberalism. The theory involves a strong commitment to educational equality, and to the idea that childrens rights include a right to personal autonomy. The book argues that school reform must always be evaluated from the perspective of social justice and applies the theory, in particular, to school choice proposals. It looks at the parental choice schemes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in England and Wales, and argues that they fall short of the requirements of justice, but that not all such schemes must do so. It elaborates an abstract voucher scheme that would combine choice with justice, and offers ways by which actual choice‐based reform can be modified to meet the requirements of justice.

In the United States predominant theories of violence focus on individualistic explanations as the root cause of violence while ignoring the broader and deeper role of social institutions in establishing and perpetuating policies and beliefs in utilizing violence to resolve political, social, and personal conflicts. Course will emphasize how societies can construct and apply less than human identities to individuals, racial or ethnic groups, or other nation states which then allow us to utilize forms of violence against them as "others". Course will include historical and theoretical reviews of slavery, slave law, lynching, death penalty, genocides, economic violence, environmental violence and gendered violence, all of which disproportionately impact minority populations. Cross-listed Criminal Justice 332/Social Justice 332. Students may receive credit for only one of the two cross-listed courses. Prerequisite: Criminal Justice 110 and 270 and at least 12 credits from the following: Public ...
by Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid Reflections on the True Historical Legacy of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz/Malcolm X , as a Muslim Fighter for the Liberation of his People by Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid In spite of the words of the Star-Spangled Banner and other American odes to truth and justice, the real measuring stick for freedom in The United States of America was and is its treatment of African Americans, with regards to Social Justice matters. The most famous and influential champion of both Allahs Cause of the establishment of Al-Islam, and the pursuit of social justice for his people, was El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X, may Allahs Mercy and Favor be upon him). The two major voices for Social Justice in America, at least during the latter half of the 20th Century, were El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz - a Muslim, and Dr. Martin Luther King - a Christian. The significance of Shabazz as a leader with a voice echoing a prophetic social justice dimension, has been written about often, by ...
The right to safe abortion, to determine when and if to become a parent, and the right to healthy sexuality is an issue of both human rights and of social justice. Induced abortion is one of the most commonly performed medical interventions. Making abortion illegal does not reduce the number of abortions. Access to safe abortion and legalization of abortion can prevent unnecessary suffering and death of women.

Half a century ago, several "Big Ten" environmental organizations passed up an important opportunity to connect with social justice movements. As civil rights hero Cesar Chavez and his United Farmworkers (UFW) fought to ban DDT in California, environmental organizations such as the Audubon Society and the Sierra Club chose not to join the farmworkers struggle against the human rights and ecological dangers of pesticides. In that moment, environmentalist missed the chance to build coalitions across class and cultural boundaries. Now, as the United States quickly approaches the culturally wonderful moment of being a country with over 50% people of color by 2050, the American environmental movement can no longer afford the luxury of overlooking social justice and human rights issues. Today, how might we avoid the mistakes of earlier environmental movements who overlooked social justice connections? What common values merge wilderness and social justice movements ...
Environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity and climate change threaten the stability of our planet. Inappropriate approaches to food production interact with hunger, malnutrition and extreme poverty, especially in the tropics and sub-tropics. These approaches, in turn, enhance social deprivation and limit rural development, both of which are drivers of economic migration and civil conflict. Exacerbated by population growth, food systems lie at the heart of these global issues. Here, a planet-proofing approach developed in Africa is presented that illustrates that it is possible to diversify and rehabilitate degraded farmland with species producing highly nutritious and marketable traditional foods in ways that improve food production by conventional staple food crops. Furthermore, it rebuilds agroecological functions and creates new local business opportunities to kick-start rural economies and enhance social well-being. Together, these benefits promote livelihoods and social justice, the
Wesleyans Social Justice Leadership Conference (SJLC) will provide participants an opportunity to learn more about social justice and how to apply it in their lives. The free, all-day March 28 event is open to all members of the Wesleyan community and to anyone who may be interested.. The SJLC, which is co-sponsored by the Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development (SALD), grew out of the previously held WSA-sponsored Social Justice Day and SALDs WesLead emerging leaders conference events.. "I think what we saw was that both events could be more successful if they were combined. The development of leadership skills and successfully creating change and social movements are closely related," Tim Shiner, Director of Student Activities & Leadership Development, says.. According to Shiner, social justice concerns any issue that affects human rights, cultural differences or global or environmental sustainability.. The SJLC is a collaborative ...

Despite the fact that hepatitis C treatment rates have increased since 2013, still only 1% of all people living with the disease received treatment in 2015, and more than a third of those continued to be offered harsher, older, less effective treatments instead of the new all-oral curative drugs.. Yes, access to medicines is a key concern for all of us who fight for social justice, and to aggravate the matter even further, there are other pressing concerns which are further stripping away our global communitys right to health. These are the general lack of awareness about the disease and the stigma and discrimination suffered by so many.. Currently, 95% of people living with viral hepatitis remain undiagnosed and are therefore at a high risk of developing liver cancer. The 5% of patients who know their status often face stigma and discrimination, with only one in five feeling comfortable to disclose their hepatitis condition, as reported in a recent global patient survey carried out by the ...

The PSAC Social Justice Fund provides funds to combat poverty by organizing a community garden with Elders and youth introducing food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture based on traditional aboriginal cultivation techniques. The initiative builds on an earlier project addressing violent behaviour in youth. The project began with 15 families, with the hope of including the whole community in the long run. A core group of community members have already started to work together to educate and create a sense of hope to overcome the cycle of poverty in Burnt Church. Community support for this project has been a real success.. ...
Im Marti Frank, a researcher and evaluator based in Portland, Oregon. Over the last three years Ive worked in the energy efficiency and social justice worlds, and its given me the opportunity to see how much these fields have to teach one another.. For evaluators working with environmental programs - and energy efficiency in particular - Ive learned two lessons that will help us do a better job documenting the impacts of environmental programs.. Lessons Learned:. 1) A program designed to address an environmental goal - for example, reduce energy use or clean up pollution, will almost always have other, more far reaching impacts. As evaluators, we need to be open to these in order to capture the full range of the programs benefits.. Example: A weatherization workshop run by Portland non-profit Community Energy Project (where I am on the Board), teaches people how to make simple, inexpensive changes to their home to reduce drafts and air leaks. While the programs goal is to reduce energy ...

Ive no idea what youre on about. This liberal Christian disagrees on quite a few points with the atheists I know. I believe in a God who created and continues to sustain all things, and will make all things perfect at the end of time. I believe that God calls us to love our neighbour, to love Him, with all that we have. That may end up with my agreeing with my atheist friends about what we should do, it means I work with anyone who wants to promote economic, social and environmental justice. But, the motivation is different, its to work towards the perfection that I believe God is working for. It gives confidence that were fighting a battle that well ultimately win - even if I dont live to see it ...
Self over truth, man over God-can a Christian be so deceived? Evidently- Paul referred to the Galatian church as having been "bewitched" (Gal 3:1), and Jesus warned that a prominent sign of the days before His coming would be an increase in deception (Mt 24:14). To confront the pro-gay theology, then, is to confront a deceptive element of our time- the tendency to subjugate objective truth to subjective experience.. That is one reason confrontation is not enough to change a heart. Being knowledgeable enough to dismantle all the "gay Christian" movements claims will not be enough to persuade a homosexual to repent. The heart, having been hardened through deception or rebellion or both, has to be softened. And that is the work of God alone. Ours is to simply speak the truth, trusting Him to quicken it to our hearers.. To that end, this three-part series will address the pro-gay theology by dividing its arguments-or tenants-into three categories: social justice arguments, general religious ...

Interesting pieces and thanks for the link. Clearly I wouldnt be in the same tribe as this PhD student at Purdue, but greatly appreciate his support for free speech and his concern that the left endangers(?) social justice when it plays the shut down speech we hate card. This second edition of Social Injustice and Public Health is a comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence-based resource on the relationship of social injustice to many aspects of public health.
It is generally believed that America faces the double economic problem of controlling rising health care costs and efficiently allocating resources to satisfy needs. The ethical issue this creates is how to structure a system that addresses these problems fairly. The role, if any, of government is at the center of all such discussions. The issue is typically framed as one of social justice.. Justice involves fairness of treatment. Similar cases ought to be treated in similar ways. Social theorists identify four principles of justice: equality, need, contribution, and effort.(10) Disagreements about distribution of health care generally result from the different importance people ascribe to these four principles. Marxist theories, for example, emphasize the principle of need. Libertarian theories, in contrast, put greatest weight on contribution. Some theorists attempt to combine principles. Utilitarian theorists, for example, combine those principles that maximize private and public interests. ...
Does individual desert matter for distributive justice? Is it relevant, for purposes of justice, that the pattern of distribution of justices "currency" (be it well-being, resources, preference-satisfaction, capabilities, or something else) is aligned in one or another way with the pattern of individual desert? -/- This paper examines the nexus between desert and distributive justice through the lens of individual claims. The concept of claims (specifically "claims across outcomes") is a fruitful way to flesh out the content of distributive justice (...) so as to be grounded in the separateness of persons. A claim is a relation between a person and a pair of outcomes. If someone is better off in one outcome than a second, she has a claim in favor of the first. If she is equally well off in the two outcomes, she has a null claim between the two. In turn, whether one outcome is more just than a second depends upon the pattern of claims between them. -/- In prior work, I have elaborated the ...
Healthcare has been described as a particularly valuable social good [2] and the market justice model, which is deeply engrained in the American psyche, does not work as well for social goods like healthcare. The Benjamin West painting Christ Healing the Sick in the Temple is located in Philadelphias Pennsylvania Hospital, which is Americas first hospital. The painting is an artifact of American cultural views of health and healthcare that reflects social justice, healing, and compassion. It also implies an emphasis on individual personal health services over population and public health efforts [3]. Social justice principles see healthcare as a social good, not an economic good, and accordingly is at odds with the tenets of market justice and the capitalist paradigm. Social justice views the resources required for health services delivery to be distributed according to ones needs, not ability to pay. The long American healthcare debate and continuous reform efforts really boil down to the ...
Her appointment was announced today, Jan. 19, 2016, by Shirley Collado, executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer at RU-N. In her announcement, Collado noted that Esquilins wealth of experience in community building, curriculum development, strategic planning, and social justice education will be of great benefit to the HLLC and RU-N.. "Martas passion and commitment to social justice, college access, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion make her an ideal addition to the team leading our bold efforts in promoting college access and success," Collado said.. Prior to her appointment, Esquilin worked for Columbia University where she served as the director for Intercultural Resources and Social Justice Programs in the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Phil # 22. Dear Phil,. Not sure I entirely understand. And I am not sure I entirely agree. I have nothing against the words themselves. I object to their misuse.. If there is a war going on and someone says there is peace then that is destructive and pernicious. If someone fights for social justice and is called a fascist, then that is destructive and (historically, educationally, socially) pernicious. If someone is a fanatic and unfair and is called a social justice warrior then that is to vitiate the concept of social justice. If someone is a socialist and is automatically called an advocate of tyranny then I would rebel and speak out against this conflation of opposites, would speak out against such ignorance and such horrible misuse of language, such gross mischaracterization and misrepresentation.. There are cases when one can be a despot and also be altruistic, cases when one can be good and bad at almost the same time. There are atheists who are deeply religious. There are (a great many) ...
Employees positive organizational behavior (POB) is not only to promote organizational function but also improve individual and organizational performance. As an important concept in organizational research, organizational justice is thought to be a universal predictor of employee and organizational outcomes. The current set of two studies examined the effects of organizational justice (OJ) on POB of employees with two different studies, a large-sample survey and a situational experiment. In study 1, a total of 2566 employees from 45 manufacturing enterprises completed paper-and-pencil questionnaires assessing organizational justice (OJ) and positive organizational behavior (POB) of employees. In study 2, 747 employees were randomly sampled to participate in the situational experiment with 2×2 between-subjects design. They were asked to read one of the four situational stories and to image that this situation happen to the person in the story or them, and then they were asked to imagine how the person
None of these pastors are [sic] affiliated with the religious right, though several are quite conservative theologically. One of them, the Rev. Joel C. Hunter, the pastor of a conservative megachurch in Florida, was branded a turncoat by some leaders of the Christian right when he began to speak out on the need to stop global warming.. But as a group they can hardly be characterized as part of the religious left either. Most, like [Sojourners Jim] Wallis, do not take traditionally liberal positions on abortion or homosexuality. What most say they share with the president is the conviction that faith is the foundation in the fight against economic inequality and social injustice. "These are all centrist, social justice guys," said the Rev. Eugene F. Rivers, a politically active pastor of Azusa Community Church in Boston, who knows all of them but is not part of the presidents prayer caucus. "Obama genuinely comes out of the social justice wing of the church. Thats real. The community ...

On Sept. 27, the Social Equity and Diversity Education Office (SEDE), in partnership with the Arts Undergraduate Research Internship Awards (ARIA) and the Science Undergraduate Research Awards (SURA), hosted a symposium for the first-ever Social Equity Undergraduate Research Awards (SEURA). The initiative was launched last year with the goal of bridging McGills research with the diverse work on equity in the community and resulted with five students receiving funding for projects that focus on equity, social justice and diversity. At the Symposium, award-winners had the opportunity to share some of the research.. In SEDEs definition, social equity, diversity and social justice research attempts to deepen the understanding of the experiences specific to people with diverse backgrounds or identities, including how these experiences impact marginalization and oppression. It also attempts to examine the barriers that prevent all individuals in society to equally access opportunities to grow, ...
The Alternative Breaks program provides students with the opportunity to learn about political and social community dynamics while becoming a catalyst for collaborative social change. Through learning and practice, students will explore the theory of integrating service, education, and reflection to create meaningful change in their communities.. Last year over 250 NYU students traveled across the world to spend their winter break or spring break working with various host communities on such issues as poverty alleviation, homelessness, public health, food justice, economic inequality, and the environment.. NYU Alternative Breaks fosters a community of active citizens by challenging participants to engage with social issues through a commitment to social justice education; strong, direct service; and reflection to create meaningful change in their respective communities.. Our vision is to create a community of lifelong active citizens who prioritize the pursuit of social justice: people who value ...
As a public health foundation dedicated to promoting fundamental improvements in the health status of all Californians, we would be remiss if we did not spend a moment to focus on the importance of good mental and physical health among those we partner with to advance health and justice for all.. As Audre Lorde said, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." Similarly, health and justice for all can never be achieved if those fighting for it do not practice self-care.. There are a number of helpful online resources that speak to the importance of self-care, what it is, and how to ensure you get it. In short, self-care refers to a range of actions you take to tend to your mental, physical and emotional well-being. Getting sleep, exercise, and good nutrition are obvious examples of self-care, but overcoming the guilt that prevents many from seeking self-care is equally important.. A recent blogpost by Joi Foley at the Rockwood ...
Indigenous communities, communities of color, and low-income communities across the United States are fighting for environmental justice (EJ). These communities have been disproportionately burdened by polluting industrial facilities and land and natural resource exploitation, which cause serious health impacts and safety hazards. EJ communities are pushing back, demanding transparency and accountability from policymakers and corporations.. Science could play a powerful role in the EJ movement. But too often, science has been used by powerful interests to minimize and dismiss community EJ concerns. The resulting legacy of mistrust creates serious challenges to productive scientist/community collaboration on EJ issues.. If our nation is to live up to its professed ideals of justice, we must overcome these challenges. Science should be a means, not an obstacle, to achieving environmental justice and informing policy decisions that benefit all. The Environmental Justice and Science Initiative ...
In what sense are the ADHD drugs social justice? The reality is, they are chemical warfare. Licensed predators are preying on the poor.
A professor of anthropology and African American studies who has taught at Princeton since 2000, Carolyn Rouse takes a wide-ranging approach to studying the production of inequality and why people accept the systems that uphold it.
One of the core issues that CoDE is addressing is the examination of how inequalities have changed over time and how they might have changed differently for different ethnic groups.. James comments: "One very obvious example of changing patterns of inequality is how understandings of Muslim people, the meaning or identity of Muslim, has evolved over the past twenty years and the implications of that for British Muslims. The other obvious example is Irish identities, where progress in resolving the conflict in Northern Ireland has resulted in a move from a very negative Irish stereotype, to one that is much more neutral or positive, at least in some parts of the UK".. James also says that as a result of changes in the political and economic landscape we have noticed a deepening of inequalities:. "We have seen a move from the antiracist and multicultural politics of the 1980s and 1990s, to a concern with migration and integration, framed around cultural difference. This is reflected in a number of ...
back to contents Chapter 5: Addressing family violence in Indigenous communities There is no issue currently causing more destruction to the fabric of Indigenous communities than family violence. This has been acknowledged by all levels of government in recent years, with a number of significant inquiries and initiatives undertaken or commenced at the federal, state and territory level to address its impact. The intensive scrutiny and public awareness of this issue has not, however, led to sufficient commitments of resources and effort to date.

This chapter aims to provide a normative framework to give an adequate justification of the right to a minimum income. Using the ontological frameworks proposed by John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx as terms of comparison, the first part of the chapter shows that Emile Durkheims theory of social justice offers a theorisation of society, individual, and market from which an adequate justification of the right to minimum income can be derived. In line with Durkheims theory of social justice, it is argued that each individual has the right to personal development which can be performed while carrying out a social function in society, such as paid employment, providing care to dependent family members, unpaid work in social economy organisations, and improving human capital through education or ...

The Senate Republican leadership has made its position on this completely clear with its recently unveiled "health care" bill, the "Better Health Care Act" (BHCA). Crafted by Majority Leader McConnell and a small group of white men from a small group of places (for example, 2 senators each from Utah, Wyoming, and Texas). It will and should be called #Trumpcare; while the President didnt write it, he has endorsed it and will sign it if it passes the Senate and the House reconciliation. It is clearly a tax-cut-for-the-wealthy bill that derives funding from the reduction (and sometimes elimination) of health care coverage for a very large percent of Americans; this is detailed by the NY Times Margot Sanger-Katz in "Shifting Dollars From Poor to Rich Is a Key Part of the Senate Health Bill", June 22, 2017. The Times also has a piece by Sanger-Katz and Haeyoun Park that contains a clear listing of what will be cut from the ACA in order to fund these tax cuts, "How Senate Republicans plan to ...

Are you sure you want to interview me? I think youll get burned! Im one of the people who believes in peaceful ways of doing things. It wont be helpful for this book youre writing. When I was young I was with the Socialists. We started the very first student movement back in the middle of the 60s, before the dictatorship. We were jumping on our desks in the classrooms, in the high schools, shouting for freedom and social justice. But when the Socialists came into power it was very disappointing. After the dictatorship people were in the universities, still on their desks, shouting for social justice and equality. And when we won in 1981, we were betrayed. The new government stole the money and nothing changed. We are the betrayed generation. We took the government, but nothing happened. We won, only to lose. At the beginning of my unit I would have the class choose from one of the numerous activities/ science experiments in the text that represented environmental challenges that their city or state faced. Then I would have the class contact one of the nearer environmental advocacy groups listed in the back of the text in order to obtain official statistics and current news on the topic. Finally, building on the fact that the class has had firsthand experience of their own in the "laboratory" and also knowing they have been equipped with data and advice from experts in the field I would have the class send a letter to their local congressmen. The letter would voice the classs concern about the specific issue and express the social action, whether law, funding, publicity, or recognition, they requested be taken ...
bySBrinkmannIn an effort to tap into the lucrative childrens market while still complying with existing child safety laws, Facebook introduced a new messaging app for kids under the age of 13 that has fueled the debate about the impact of social media on children. The Washington Post is reporting on the new app, called Messenger Kids, which allows users under the age of 13 to send texts, videos and photos. In addition, they can also draw on pictures they send and add stickers. The app, which launched yesterday in the U.S., gives the company access to a new market whose age prohibit them from using Facebooks main social network. Safeguards have been built into the new app, such as requiring parents to use their Facebook email address and password to activate their childs account. When setting up the account, parents decide which friends and relatives their child will be permitted to connect with. Outside of this list, if two children want to be friends, they will each need parental ap ...

The Trump administration is prohibiting officials at the nations top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases - including "fetus" and "transgender" - in official documents being prepared for next years budget.. Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are "vulnerable," "entitlement," "diversity," "transgender," "fetus," "evidence-based" and "science-based.". In some instances, the analysts were given alternative phrases. Instead of "science-based" or -"evidence-based," the suggested phrase is "CDC bases its recommendations on science in consideration with community standards and wishes," the person said. In other cases, no replacement words were immediately offered.. The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC, "will ...
Social Justice is a pretext, the handy catch phrase to get people to support the legalization of pot. The idea doesnt come from disadvantaged minorities. "Marijuana legalization is the worst way forward to reforming drug policy for the minority community," claims Will Jones, founder of Two is Enough D.C.. It was easy to cut through the illusion by watching Ethan Nadelmann at the Democratic National Convention last summer. Nadelmann, director of Drug Policy Alliance, was bragging to his supporters about how profitable the marijuana industry is. At the end of the video, when the cameras was on him, he added "and dont forget social justice." It sounded like an afterthought. He must have been joking. Nadelmann makes at least $280,000 a year to advocate for marijuana legalization, a salary funded by George Soros yearly gifts of $4 million to DPA. The Drug Policy Alliance advocates for the legalization of all drugs.. In Denver, the pot businesses have located mainly in low-income minority ...
Introduction. South Africa has a dearth of students matriculating with maths and science pass rates that qualify them for further study in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) careers. The mathematics pass rate for the 2010 cohort improved only marginally (by 1.4 percentage points to 29%) while the physical science pass rate improved significantly (by 11 percentage points to 30%) over the 2009 results (Mail & Guardian, 2011). This has serious opportunity costs and consequences for South Africa in the knowledge economy - locally and globally.. When school academic achievement is further disaggregated and analysed by quintile, underprivileged schools in quintiles 1-3 performworse than well-resourced schools in quintiles 4 and 5. Recent findings by the Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) suggest that South Africa relies on just more than 400 top schools for half its mathematics passes at the 50 per cent level and about 350 schools for half its science passes at the 50 per cent level ...
The issue can be complicated for insiders. Deborah Powell MD, former dean of the medical school at the University of Minnesota and an advocate for policies that encourage restraint, herself accepted a paid position on the board of Pepsico. Many believe that her subsequent firing was due, in part, to negative publicity from this action. (U of M medical school reorganizes; dean out by summer, Tim Post, Minnesota Public Radio, January 29, 2009). The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has recently developed a "corporate partnership" with Coca-Cola that has received a great deal of criticism both within and outside the family medicine community - criticism that has not resulted in the AAFP ending the relationship. Which is a greater conflict of interest for physicians and medical school faculty members - alliances with companies, such as Coke and Pepsi, whose products are clearly detrimental to health, or sitting on the boards of corporations that make medical and pharmaceutical products? I ...

N2 - Changing family structures, such as children living with grandparents or older siblings caring for children, gay and lesbian parents, families who are newly immigrated or undocumented, single head of house hold due to incarceration, divorce, and military deployment have become common place in the last two decades. Therefore, teachers must prepare themselves for meeting the needs of young children and their families through social justice considerations. Building off these considerations and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Position Statement on Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children Birth Through Age 8, this chapter offers recommendations for integrating a social justice perspective into Early Childhood Care and Education.. The leader in this effort is a new industry lobbying group, the "Partnership to Improve Patient Care" (dont you love these names, picked to entirely obfuscate what they are really about? It does sound a lot better than "the Partnership to Maintain our Profits", a name that would fit it, and indeed virtually all of these lobbying groups). Its spokesman is former California congressman Tony Coelho, a former Democratic whip. He is "former" because he resigned in the wake of a junk-bond investment scandal. So it is certainly not surprising to see him fronting for such a group; he is well-paid, we can be sure. One of the bugbears raised by these opponents is the British governments National Institute for Clinical Effectiveness (NICE). (Now isnt that a nice name?) NICE evaluates the clinical effectiveness of various interventions and also associates them with a price tag - how much will it cost to treat enough people that one person will have an improvement of a certain amount of quality life ...

The complaint alleges that Senior Vice President Urs Holzle and numerous managers in his organization actively stoked up witch hunts in 2015 and 2016 intended to muzzle low-level employees who raised concerns about the companys practices. The trial is set for November.. Several managers have openly admitted to keeping blacklists of the employees in question, and preventing them from seeking work at other companies. There have been numerous cases in which social justice activists coordinated attempts to sabotage other employees performance reviews for expressing a different opinion. These have been raised to the Senior VP level, with no action taken whatsoever.. Allum Bokhari: Whats it like to work in such an environment? ...

Anita Bright, PhD, is an associate professor in the Curriculum and Instruction Department in the College of Education. A National Board Certified Teacher with over 20 years of experience as a K-12 public school educator, Dr. Bright is the ESOL program coordinator, and teaches courses in ESOL, social justice, and mathematics education, and is a doctoral program cohort leader. She also serves as the CAEP/ TESOL international program coordinator. Dr. Brights primary research interests focus on racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression, and draw from critical theory and include explorations into the ways curricular materials may function as reproducers of culture, and the ways marginalization and oppression may influence students, their families, and the climate of educational settings. Her research also includes a focus on the ways law enforcement intersects with public school education, and the ways preservice teachers conceptualize ideas of social justice, and explores the ways they use ...
Norman Solomon. The nonprofit Edge Foundation recently asked some of the world?s most eminent scientists, ?What are you optimistic about? Why?? In response, the prominent neuroscientist Marco Iacoboni cites the proliferating experimental work into the neural mechanisms that reveal how humans are ?wired for empathy.?. Iacoboni?s optimism is grounded in his belief that, with the popularization of scientific insights, these recent findings in neuroscience will seep into public awareness and ?. . . this explicit level of understanding our empathic nature will at some point dissolve the massive belief systems that dominate our societies and that threaten to destroy us.? (Iacoboni, 2007, p. 14). While there are reasons to remain skeptical (see below) about the progressive political implications flowing from this work, a body of impressive empirical evidence reveals that the roots of prosocial behavior, including moral sentiments such as empathy, precede the evolution of culture. This work sustains ...

Another reason could, theoretically, be that the work was less or easier back then. Indeed, at Cook County Hospital in the late 1970s most residents had every-fourth-night call, a direct result of having a residents union in the hospital that negotiated working conditions. Dr. Khullar asserts that "The structure of medical training has changed little since the 1960s, when almost all residents were men with few household duties." I think that he is wrong about this. Residents who trained in the late 60s and early 70s, before me and the union, often had every other night call (yes, work all day and all night and the next day, then go home and crash and come back to work). There is a reason that these doctors in training are called "residents" and "interns"; Cook County had a residents residence, where many actually lived and all had "call rooms" where we could get, maybe, a couple of hours rest. Although call was every 4th night, there were no other "hours rules"; Cook County had 16 medical ...
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is not known for standing up to the dominant culture. The Catholic Bishops in the United States tend to fall in line with the worldview of politics and society that the elites in America have foisted on all of us. A quick review of the USCCB website sees that their material concerning information and teachings on the issues of the day are organized as one would expect from the Hollywood-New York culture shapers. There is "Social Justice", "Family, Laity, Women & Youth", "Migrants & Refugees", and "Pro-Life". These separate categories in no way articulate a comprehensive, and hence Catholic, view of how such things as personal morality and social justice are to be integrated to form a coherent approach to living lives, and ordering society for the betterment of all and the salvation of souls. The sad thing is that history is full of examples of how societies should be organized for the common good. If only the USCCB would try ...
I gather her story from her husband who looks on powerlessly. It is her fourth baby; a girl after three boys. After the birth, she had a seizure. He had to run around the small village finding a way to take her to the hospital four hours away. They stuffed a rag in her mouth and put her between two men on a motorcycle and drove four hours on mountain roads with her seizing. By the time I meet her she is quiet and comatose. Her blood pressure is still dangerously high and the baby has not been given anything to eat for over 24 hours. I look around. When a nurse finally drifts in I write her BP on a slip of paper and point to the empty IV bags and full urine bag. She had been my student in a unit I taught her midwifery class on the immediate postpartum. She goes over and looks at the bag and sighs. "Mwen ap achte pou medikama" I try to say in my broken Creole. I will pay for the medicine. She waves her hand and goes to get the supplies and care for the mother. I wonder what would have happened had ...

This prospective study showed low and declining levels of relational justice to predict decreasing health in a large well characterised cohort of men and women in the British civil service. Favourable change in the extent to which employees were treated with justice was associated with reduced health risk in men. These associations were largely replicable across two different follow up periods (three and six years, on average), and were not attributable to other occupational stressors or reverse causation.. Research of organisational justice is very recent compared with the large number of analyses published on the demand-control model and the effort-reward imbalance model.1-3,20,21 There are conceptual differences in proposed health relevant features of work between these three models. The primary focus of the demand-control model is on task level characteristics whereas the other two models emphasise work related social contexts and processes.1-3,7-12 According to the effort-reward imbalance ...
This book presents a systemic and definitive critique of Ronald Dworkins highly influential theory of liberal equality. Focusing on the connection Dworkin attempts to establish between economic markets and liberal equality, the book examines Dworkins contention that markets have an indispensable role to play in the articulation of liberal ideals of distributive justice, individual liberty, and state neutrality. The book also examines the issues concerning individual responsibility and entitlement as well as the nature of justice with respect to persons with disabilities. The author argues that Dworkins attempt to establish deep affinities between the market and equality is unsuccessful and his proposed solutions to some central controversies in political theory are seriously flawed. This powerful examination of the work of Americas leading public philosopher reveals some timely lessons about the hazards and limitations of the market as a device for the articulation and realization of egalitarian

Creating health equity is a guiding priority and core value of APHA. By health equity, we mean everyone has the opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Health equity is a health, economic, human rights and social justice issue that calls for fairness. Health equity addresses inclusion along multiple dimensions, including race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation and disability.. How do we achieve health equity? We value all people equally. We optimize the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, learn and age. We work with other sectors to address the factors that influence health, including employment, housing, education, health care, public safety and food access.. To become the healthiest nation, we must eliminate health disparities and dismantle the systems and structures that prevent individuals and communities from reaching their full potential.. APHA is uniquely positioned to galvanize and lead a national conversation on health equity. The Annual Meeting gives ...
