My colleagues at Gordon College and I recently spent two days with a group of scholars/pastors/thought leaders from Brazil, Hong Kong, and China. We had the pleasure of hosting them for a gathering to explore issues of the evangelical church and its engagement with an increasingly pluralist society in each of these settings. Near the end of our meeting, I shared what I thought I had heard in the discussion related to the challenges or opportunities facing the church in Brazil and China as they tried to serve the common good while remaining faithful, and where I thought visionary energy could be derived.. Cultural Resources. The local church is always embedded in a context rich with particular cultural resources available to them. These are natural entryways to service and are also elements of culture and history that need to be amplified and honored in local expressions of faith. In a country which values education and the elderly, Christians in China have naturally found niches in which to ...

Background: Although lifestyle factors have been studied in relation to individual non-communicable diseases (NCDs), their association with development of a subsequent NCD, defined as multimorbidity, has been scarcely investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between five lifestyle factors and incident multimorbidity of cancer and cardiometabolic diseases. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 291,778 participants (64% women) from seven European countries, mostly aged 43 to 58 years and free of cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and type 2 diabetes (T2D) at recruitment, were included. Incident multimorbidity of cancer and cardiometabolic diseases was defined as developing subsequently two diseases including first cancer at any site, CVD, and T2D in an individual. Multi-state modelling based on Cox regression was used to compute hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of developing cancer, CVD, or T2D, and subsequent transitions to ...

AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton has urged governments to tackle the social determinants of health, describing this as a public policy imperative.. In a speech to a Social Determinants of Health Alliance forum in Sydney yesterday, he noted that income inequality is increasing in Australia, as in many other countries.. He said: The AMA wants our governments to make health equity and health impact explicit goals of all public policy in every portfolio, and that Australia needs to rethink our approach to health, and redesign our policies and systems to tackle the root causes of ill health.. And he committed the AMA to advocating for action on the social determinants of health, which he described as a very important - but often neglected - part of the national health conversation.. RDF (Resource Description Framework) is a data model for describing information about various resources on the web, and a basic technique of semantic web and Knowledge Graph. Recently, starting with Japan Search, it is more and more often used also for cultural resources studies and humanities and social science, and there is also a trend to describe data on persons name, place-name, social network, and prosopography. In this seminar, we will not only provide basic knowledge and examples of actual uses, but also actually give study on a model of structurization using real documents and making and search of data in order to think about how we can use this technology for research. ...

The first step in compliance and research projects is conducting a thorough background literature search through examination of site forms, books, journal articles, historic maps, and resource management reports. Minimally this involves consulting the State Historic Preservation Office or Office of the State Archeologist to acquire copies of previously recorded surveys, sites and reports relevant to a project area. Often the search is extended to local colleges, universities, historical societies, and other cultural resource management firms.. Back to Services. ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This paper provides a brief analysis of three major questions raised in the context of the recent global financial crisis. First, how similar is the crisis to previous episodes? We argue that the crisis featured some close similarities to earlier ones, including the presence of credit and asset price booms fueled by rapid debt accumulation. Second, how different is it from earlier episodes? We show that, as much as it displayed some similarities with previous cases, it also featured some significant differences, such as the explosion of opaque and complex financial instruments in a context of highly integrated global financial markets. Third, how costly are recessions that followed these types of crises? Although the latest episode took a very heavy toll on the real economy, we argue that this was not a surprising outcome. In particular, historical comparisons indicate that recessions associated with periods of deep financial disruptions result in much larger declines
Downloadable! The Basel II Accord requires that banks and other Authorized Deposit-taking Institutions (ADIs) communicate their daily risk forecasts to the appropriate monetary authorities at the beginning of each trading day, using one or more risk models to measure Value-at-Risk (VaR). The risk estimates of these models are used to determine capital requirements and associated capital costs of ADIs, depending in part on the number of previous violations, whereby realised losses exceed the estimated VaR. In this paper we define risk management in terms of choosing from a variety of risk models, and discuss the selection of optimal risk models. A new approach to model selection for predicting VaR is proposed, consisting of combining alternative risk models, and we compare conservative and aggressive strategies for choosing between VaR models. We then examine how different risk management strategies performed during the 2008-09 global financial crisis. These issues are illustrated using Standard and Poor

Drawing on the 2016 update of the IMFs Central Bank Legislation Database, this paper examines differences in central bank legal frameworks before and after the Global Financial Crisis. Examples from select countries show that many central bank laws have undergone changes in objectives, decision-making, accountability, and data collection. A wider cross-country survey illustrates the common occurrence of price stability in central bank objectives, and varying practices in defining financial stability, independence versus autonomy, and who within a central bank determines monetary policy. The highlighted facts illustrate the uses of the database and could be a starting point for further analyses.
In the wake of the global financial crisis, President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has expressed confidence in the Brazilian economy to withstand a slowdown. Mauricio Cardenas discusses the fundamentals of the Brazilian economy and analyzes whether Brazil is likely to maintain its economic strength.
The term financial crisis is applied broadly to a variety of situation in which some financial institutions or assets suddenly lose a large part of their value. In the 19th and early 20th centuries many financial crises were associated with banking panic and many recessions coincided with these panics. Financial crisis includes stock market crashes, currency crises, credit crunch and liquidity crises. This lead to arrival of the foreigners from one country to another country. The financial meltdown, morphed in to a global economic downturn with the collapse of Lehman Brothers on 23 rd September 2008, the impact on the Indian economy was almost immediate. Because the arrival of foreigners was get down in the year 2009 and it leads to the decrease in the foreign exchange income ...
Turning to possible strategies to address the economic crisis, she said it was necessary to have a more thorough gender analysis to see how development policies could better respond to the needs of women and men. Social and economic empowerment must continue, and the world must learn from previous crises in Latin America and Asia. Social economic capital was critical to cushion the impact of financial crises and to ensure the human resources needed to generate and create wealth. Maternal mortality must not stay the same or worsen when funds shrank. It was essential to enhance the productive capacities of women to create more wealth and support income-generating activities. Women should also be able to work in the renewable energy sector to help reduce their workload. She pointed to Malawi where women had benefited from management credit and to Rwanda, where they benefited from economic recovery credit. All stakeholders had a role to play to empower women. Ending global poverty began with women. ...
What causes a financial crisis? Can financial crises be anticipated or even avoided? What can be done to lessen their impact? Should governments and international institutions intervene? Or should financial crises be left to run their course? In the aftermath of the recent Asian financial crisis, many blamed international institutions, corruption, governments, and flawed macro and microeconomic policies not only for causing the crisis but also un
which the seventeen counties of the study area were located. Most sig-nificantly, blacks reappeared in considerable numbers at all levels of government. Upon the advent of the Fusionism in 1895, legislation was passed to reconstitute the elective county commission and to reduce the magistrates to a position of minor importance. Control of county affairs was returned to popularly-elected commissioners, and after the election of 1896 the justices of the peace also became subject to the voice of the people. Thus the Fusionists fulfilled their campaign promise to restore local self-government to North Carolinians. The Democrats finally regained control of government at the turn of the twentieth century by means of the white supremacy campaigns of 1898 and 1900, and the suffrage amendment of 1900 that disfranchised most blacks. Francis D. Winston of Bertie County was one of the foremost advocates of white supremacy in the state. It was he who suggested in 1898 the formation of what were called ...

And here in India we have put in place an inflation targeting framework & are actually taking it as some holy rule. But, China already had a pretty strong supply based infrastructure(including human capital) but still pretty far from PPF owing to which it was able to increase productivity easily without increasing inflation after pumping this much amount of liquidity. Here in India our supply chain is somehow broken & government was pretty shy of taking strong decisions owing to which even after pumping ample amount of liquidity projects were not granted permission & now we are suffering from twin balance sheet crisis or secular stagnation from our potentials perspective. As return on savings started to become negative they fell continuously & Feds rumours of increasing interest rates led to a crisis like situation in 2013 & so inflation targeting was the natural offshoot of those times.. This paper provides a comprehensive, global database of deposit insurance arrangements as of 2013. We extend our earlier dataset by including recent adopters of deposit insurance and information on the use of government guarantees on banks assets and liabilities, including during the recent global financial crisis. We also create a Safety Net Index capturing the generosity of the deposit insurance scheme and government guarantees on banks balance sheets. The data show that deposit insurance has become more widespread and more extensive in coverage since the global financial crisis, which also triggered a temporary increase in the government protection of non-deposit liabilities and bank assets. In most cases, these guarantees have since been formally removed but coverage of deposit insurance remains above pre-crisis levels, raising concerns about implicit coverage and moral hazard going forward. ...
Cable is credited by some[who?] with prescience of the global financial crisis of 2007-2010. In November 2003, Cable asked Gordon Brown, then-Chancellor, Is not the brutal truth that ... the growth of the British economy is sustained by consumer spending pinned against record levels of personal debt, which is secured, if at all, against house prices that the Bank of England describes as well above equilibrium level? Brown replied, As the Bank of England said yesterday, consumer spending is returning to trend. The Governor said, there is no indication that the scale of debt problems have ... risen markedly in the last five years. He also said that the fraction of household income used up in debt service is lower than it was then.[46] In his book The Storm, Cable writes, The trigger for the current global financial crisis was the US mortgage market and, indeed, the scale of improvident and unscrupulous lending on that side of the Atlantic dwarfs into insignificance the escapades of our own ...
Enter Barack Obama, his latest Jobs bill and a new Mortgage Loan Refinancing program for houses that are up to 25% underwater. What is the economic effect of these efforts to restore the housing market and create or save jobs? The net effect is further public debt spending and private capitalization (consumer and bank debt). Both are the exact wrong courses of action. These actions erase confidence and hope in the American economy. By proxy, this will kick the remaining legs out of confidence in the world recovery. President Obamas jawboning of this agenda is eroding confidence and hope throughout the world ...

The total volume of loans held by community banks peaked in 2008 and dropped during the financial crisis and Great Recession. Total loans bottomed out in 2011 and, as of December 2012, have only recovered to a level roughly 10 percent below their 2008 peak.. During this period, both demand and supply factors undoubtedly played roles in the change in bank lending. In the years before the crisis, the perception of ever-rising residential and commercial real estate prices caused loan demand to soar. On the supply side, some (though certainly not all) banks relaxed assorted underwriting standards, accepting applicants with little equity or with overly optimistic property appraisals and income forecasts. During the financial crisis, Great Recession and sluggish economic recovery, business and household loan demand weakened considerably as firms and households cut spending, increased savings and increased balance sheet liquidity. On the supply side, banks that had relaxed some standards naturally ...

It has been more than five years since the 2008 financial crisis, the worst international financial crisis since the Great Depression, to which the U.S. government responded with emergency financial support for the countrys financial institutions. Many saw the crisis as having resulted from a failure of regulation and supervision of financial markets; in 2010 President Obama signed into law the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which provides for a far-reaching overhaul of the countrys financial regulatory system. The impact of this legislation continues to be debated. For some, the financial system is far more stable than prior to the crisis, while others continue to argue that the countrys largest financial institutions are still

In response to the need to develop their public health capabilities and infrastructure, several countries developed field-based training programs in applied epidemiology and public health. The primary goal of these training programs was to foster the development of field-trained epidemiologists who are competent in the practical application of epidemiologic methods to a wide range of public health problems in their respective areas.. Various models of field-based training programs exist, e.g. the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs), Public Health Schools Without Walls (PHSWOWs) and the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET). Regardless of the model, all of them subscribe to the maxim of training through service. Each program is adapted to meet the health needs of the country or region in which it functions.. Women are disproportionally affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The determinants of gender inequality in HIV/AIDS may vary across countries and require country-specific interventions to address them. This study aimed to identify the socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics underlying gender inequalities in HIV/AIDS in 21 SSA countries. We applied an extension of the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition approach to data from Demographic and Health Surveys and AIDS Indicator Surveys to quantify the differences in HIV/AIDS prevalence between women and men attributable to socio-demographic factors, sexual behaviours, and awareness of HIV/AIDS. We decomposed gender inequalities into two components: the percentage attributable to different levels of the risk factors between women and men (the

Including special-mention loans, which are those showing signs of future repayment risk, the industrys total troubled advances swelled to 4.2 trillion yuan ($645 billion) as of December, representing 5.46 percent of total lending. That number is already higher than the $600 billion total subprime mortgages in the U.S. as of 2006, just before that asset class toppled the world into the worst financial crisis since 1929. TY - JOUR. T1 - Social Determinants of American Indian Nutritional Health. AU - Warne, Donald. AU - Wescott, Siobhan. PY - 2019/2/13. Y1 - 2019/2/13. N2 - The American Indian (AI) population suffers from significant health disparities, including nutrition-related chronic diseases (diabetes, cancer, and heart disease). Several risk factors for disease and social determinants of health have unique histories in the AI population, including historical trauma, boarding schools, adverse childhood experiences, poverty, federal food programs, and food deserts. To effectively address these disparities, a multipronged approach in collaboration with stakeholders is needed to address the upstream social determinants of health and to increase access to healthier foods. Promising practices and strategies can be considered in several focus areas, including 1) improving existing food programs, 2) promoting breastfeeding and early childhood nutrition, 3) promoting food sovereignty and access to traditional ...
Australia needs to live within its means, but we can do this without the constant hectoring from agencies whose egregious misjudgements are still fresh in our memories. Its time to stop genuflecting at the ratings altar.. Five year ago the Financial Crisis Enquiry Commission, set up by the US Congress following the Global Financial Crisis, described the rating agencies as essential companies in the wheel of financial destruction and key enablers of the financial meltdown. Closer to home, Stephen Grenville, a former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, expressed similar reservations in this blog (see repost) John Menadue. On the face of it, this sounds like a big deal that can only be avoided by budget-tightening actions (which the close election ...

The aim is to determine tangible ways to address the social, political and economic dynamics of epidemics; and to ensure that interventions build on the social and cultural resources of the communities they aim to support. This report explores lessons about the social dimensions of past and recent Ebola epidemics ...
Standard of living is generally measured by standards such as real (i.e. inflation adjusted) income per person and poverty rate. Other measures such as access and quality of health care, income growth inequality, and educational standards are also used. Examples are access to certain goods (such as number of refrigerators per 1000 people), or measures of health such as life expectancy. It is the ease by which people living in a time or place are able to satisfy their needs and/or wants.[citation needed]. The main idea of a standard may be contrasted with the quality of life, which takes into account not only the material standard of living, but also other more intangible aspects that make up human life, such as leisure, safety, cultural resources, social life, physical health, environmental quality issues, etc. More complex means of measuring well-being must be employed to make such judgements, and these are very often political, thus controversial. Even between two nations or societies that ...
