This essay discusses the role of informal social control for sex offenders who are reentering the community after imprisonment. The essay begins by reviewing the reintegration of sex offenders into communities, noting that they might reintegrate differently than other offenders. Considering how informal social control occurs across the life course for sex offenders may offer insight into specific mechanisms of desistance. The essay discusses the role in reentry of relationships, such as family, friends, and intimate partners, as well as the support function of social networks and community-oriented informal controls, such as school, employment, and other forms of civic engagement. The role of the community for sex offenders is tenuous, considering the legal and social policies that govern their movement and involvement in certain activities. The emerging role of the therapeutic community and the treatment group is examined. Controversies in the role of social support for sex offenders are also reviewed.

The future of Taiwan, a flourishing liberal democracy and vibrant economy, is anything but secure. China, regarding it as a renegade province, has not renounced the use of military force to resolve the standoff. Taiwan must deter Chinas aggression, taking steps to convince Chinese leaders that the costs of waging war on Taiwan will outweigh any possible benefits. In a new monograph, A Question of Time: Enhancing Taiwans Conventional Deterrence Posture, a team of researchers at George Mason University and the University of Waterloo examine a holistic strategy that Taiwan can use to enhance its conventional deterrence posture. Their conclusions are simple but radical: Taiwan must intensely prepare an asymmetric deterrence and challenge orthodoxies in its strategic thinking.. Argues against relying on deterrence against a nuclear Iran by analyzing problems with the disproportionate focus on Irans current leadership in debates over deterrence strategies and considering the implications of various doctrines of deterrence.
The most important step in emancipating oneself from social controls is the ability to find rewards in the events of each moment. If a person learns to enjoy and find meaning in the ongoing stream of experience, in the process of living itself, the burden of social controls automatically falls from ones shoulders. Power returns to the person when rewards are no longer relegated to outside forces. It is no longer necessary to struggle for goals that always seem to recede into the future, to end each boring day with the hope that tomorrow, perhaps, something good will happen. Instead of forever straining for the tantalizing prize dangled just out of reach, one begins to harvest the genuine rewards of living. But it is not by abandoning ourselves to instinctual desires that we become free of social controls. We must also become independent from the dictates of the body, and learn to take charge of what happens in the mind. Pain and pleasure occur in consciousness and exist only there. As long as ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Parity in Peril? the continuing vitality of Russian-US strategic nuclear deterrence. AU - Cimbala, Stephen J.. PY - 2006/12. Y1 - 2006/12. N2 - The stability of nuclear deterrence between the United States and Russia no longer can be regarded as a relic of the Cold War. The topic is rapidly re-emerging as one of ever-greater relevance and policy-strategic urgency. A more fluid international order, the complexity of post-Cold War security issues, and the pressure of incipient nuclear proliferation in Asia, make clarity in American-Russian nuclear arms control of first importance. Through the revival of proven analytical techniques, however, this article self-consciously reintroduces concepts long at the heart of strategic nuclear debates. These show that although there is no imminent risk to first strike stability, arms control stability is more nuanced and cannot be assumed without deliberate effort. Missile defences, already deployed by the US and possibly appealing to others, ...
The paper exaggerates the need to destroy deep targets for deterrence. If deterrence depends on the power to hurt why should we allow the enemy to define their deep targets as the only way to hurt them? Deep targets are sometimes militarily important but even huge nuclear weapons cannot destroy them; we have no choice but to attack the entrances, which conventional weapons can do ...
A conceptual framework based on social ecology, social learning, and social control theories guided identification of social contexts, contextual attributes, and joint effects that contribute to development of adolescent alcohol misuse. Modeling of alcohol use, suggested by social learning theory, and indicators of the social bond, suggested by social control theory, were examined in the family, peer, school, and neighborhood contexts. Interactions between alcohol modeling and social bond indicators were tested within and between contexts. Data were from a longitudinal study of 6,544 students, 1,663 of their parents, and the U.S. Census. All contexts were uniquely implicated in development of alcohol misuse from ages 11 through 17 years, and most alcohol modeling effects were contingent on attributes of social bonds. ...
Loners and antisocial kids who reject other children are often bullied at school - an accepted form of punishment from peers as they establish social order. Such peer victimization may be an extreme group response to control renegades, according to a new study from Concordia University published in the Journal of Early Adolescence.. For groups to survive, they need to keep their members under control, says author William M. Bukowski, a professor at the Concordia Department of Psychology and director of its Centre for Research in Human Development. Withdrawn individuals threaten the strong social fabric of a group, so kids are victimized when they are too strong or too antisocial. Victimization is a reaction to anyone who threatens group harmony.. Bukowski notes that the word victimization is related to the word for sacrifice and speculates the term remains relevant in establishing modern dynamics among kids. Peers who are victimized are sacrificed for the survival of the group.. The study, ...

This article draws on historical material to examine the co-evolution of economic science and business education over the course of the twentieth century, showing that fields evolve not only through internal struggles but also through struggles taking place in adjacent fields. More specifically, we argue that the scientific strategies of business schools played an essential-if largely invisible and poorly understood-role in major transformations in the organization and substantive direction of social-scientific knowledge, and specifically economic knowledge, in twentieth century America. We use the Wharton School as an illustration of the earliest trends and dilemmas (c. 1900-1930), when business schools found themselves caught between their business connections and their striving for moral legitimacy in higher education. Next, we look at the creation of the Carnegie Tech Graduate School of Industrial Administration after World War II. This episode illustrates the increasingly successful claims of
The sheer amount of qualifying statements in those sentences is outstanding. But let us ignore such brazen tautology and meandering qualifying rhetoric for a moment, as there is something far more important and interesting going on here.. Why does Samuelson insist that this is not a psychological function? After all, we have just shown that the theory of utility contains a strongly psychological dimension in which it gives a very definitive view of human psychology.. This is a classic shunning of intellectual responsibility on the part of Samuelson. He assures us - and with us, himself - that he is not passing psychological judgement. He does this by insisting that we are engaged here in science (whatever that means).. Of course, the critical observer can see that this is a strongly psychological argument with absolutely psychological foundations, but Samuelson doesnt want to know anything about this.. Why? Because that would lead him to be questioned regarding the psychological basis of ...

Unfortunately, Im not off-the-grid, but as a political activist Ive recently experienced increasing levels of interference in my life (cointelpro-like stuff including vigilantism), so I can understand why some might be concerned that getting-off-the-grid is one more way to get oneself targeted.. It is always a risk, but so is anything worthwhile in our incredibly corrupt society - you either hide from the truth or deal with it as constructively as possible.. Days Banker video especially hit home for me - Ive even experienced provocation and intimidation techniques (types of psyops) applied to me at my union bank! Both feminist and queer theory have shown us how politically powerful bodies and sexualities are, and thats because of how fundamental it is to our personhood and identity. Genital modification is, and has been, used in cultures throughout the world as a means of social control for the same reason. How much difference is there then, for example, between young girls in Arabic cultures who are forced to undergo circumcision as a means of social control, and those women who voluntarily undergo cosmetic labiaplasty? Are they not arguably submitting themselves to the same end result? And for what? Because pussies terrify and deserve to be domesticated? Ok, YK, these examples are peripheral and extreme to your question, but dont they suggest that with so much control and unnecessary confusion imposed on womens (and mens, surely) genitals, is it any wonder that they remain such mysteries to most people ...
US President Joe Bidens $715 billion Department of Defense budget will shift funding from old systems to help modernize the nuclear arsenal to deter China, while also developing future warfare capabilities, people familiar with the budget said.. The defense spending request, which will be sent to Congress on Friday, is expected to contain investments in troop readyness, space, the Pacific Deterrence Initiative aimed at countering Chinas military build-up in the region and nuclear weapons technology, the people said.. The budget request would buy ships, jets and pay for maintenance and salaries, but an additional $38 billion is earmarked for defense-related programs at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Energy and other agencies bringing the national security budget to $753 billion, a 1.7% increase over the 2021 figure.. There will also be money to further develop and test of hypersonic weapons and other next generation weapons systems as the military aims to build ...

The quest for damage-limiting capabilities and plans is natural for people whose jobs are to deter war by being able to win it.2 So long as the United States and Russia have had the financial and technical resources to develop and deploy new potentially winning weapons systems, they have been tempted to do so. Arms control agreements have constrained such competition to some extent, but the temptation remains. Yet when American political leaders have learned about these war-fighting or damage-limitation strategies, they have found them untenable at best and extremely dangerous at worst, although they often have been unable to change them significantly.3 The probability is too high that Russian and (less so) Chinese nuclear weapons would survive in numbers sufficient to devastate the United States. This conclusion reinforces mutual deterrence of nuclear use and the general value of arms control to constrain (if not lower) the costs and instability of nuclear competition.. Even if it were ...
This study examines an aspect of competitive interactions that has attracted increasing research attention: the relationship between deterrence and competitive reputations. We build a conceptual model of the antecedents and consequences of a firms reputation for being a credible defender of its markets. Theory and limited empirical evidence suggests afirm with this reputation should deter competitive attacks against it. We explore how a managers competitive cognition about her opponents (1) patterns of activity in the marketplace and (2) previous success can lead her to perceive a competitor as a credible defender. We test the framework using MBA students in a quasi-field setting, the Markstrat2 simulation game. The results of the study suggest that reputation deters attack only when the potential attacker considers the target firm a minor competitor. Managers consider defenders that have previously been successful as credible defenders of their markets. They also weigh consistency of ...
With regard to the substance of state aid and state intervention a distinct though vital debate is required. State economic intervention is neither good nor bad in itself: it depends on its overall effects. To simplify a wide-ranging discussion, the crucial question is: does the state intervention, through public spending or other policy measures, impede or foster economic development? In todays circumstances, the economic pros or cons of governments providing aid to their business sectors rests on whether the measures promote economic renewal. Do they help with creating enough new decent jobs, or do they instead, whether by intent or effect, clog up the economy and preserve old lousy jobs?. Larry Elliott, the Guardians economics editor, succinctly and clearly explained the challenge and the choice. Britain, he wrote, is,. now at a fork in the road. One way leads to the place on the map known as business as usual. This involves talking a lot about the need for fundamental change and the ...

Leniency programs as a tool for cartel detection and cartel destabilization, have been implemented since the early nineties. Theoretical work has shown that leniency programs can be effective in enhancing cartel detection and deterrence, but these effects are not straight-forward. It is even possible that there is an increase in the total number of cartels. Empirical evidence shows that the positive effect on cartel deterrence seems to dominate, but cannot provide definite evidence, as inference is derived only by detected cartels. This study uses a more direct measure of success, the intensity of competition at the industry level of OECD countries. An instrumental variable approach, reveals a positive effect on industries competition intensity of leniency programs indicating effectiveness in cartel destabilization and effective deterrence ...

Surveillance of children and young people in non-Western contexts has received little attention in the literature. In this paper we draw principally on our research in one African country, Malawi, to examine the ways in which their independent travel is shaped by (usually adult-directed) surveillance and control in diverse urban and rural contexts. Surveillance is interpreted very broadly, because our empirical data indicates a range of practices whereby a close watch is kept over children as they move around their community and travel out to other locations. In some cases we suggest that surveillance of children and young people becomes internalized self-surveillance, such that no external social control is required to police their movements.. Our evidence, from eight research sites, brings together a wide range of source material, including findings from intensive qualitative research with children and adults (in-depth interviews, accompanied walks, focus groups, life histories) and a ...
In this article I review a series of artworks, artistic performances and installations that deal with the topic of surveillance. My aim is twofold. On the one hand, I want to look comparatively at how different artists interrogate, question, quote, or criticize surveillance society. On the other hand, I take these artistic actions as themselves symptomatic of the ways in which surveillance interrogates contemporary society. In other words, my claim is that surveillance does not simply produce substantive social control and social triage, it also contributes to the formation of an ideoscape and a collective imagery about what security, insecurity, and control are ultimately about, as well as the landscape of moods a surveillance society like ours expresses ...

Urban open spaces are essential elements of the city having importance for different functional and leisure activities of the urban dwellers. Cities as well have hierarchy of spaces and always engaged in welcoming different actions. In spite of growing densification there are some space left as urban gray which can turn into urban positive interactive space as large scale civic space is hardly to be found. Public open spaces are important to improve the social ties and social control for future generations and create a sense of satisfaction among the city dwellers. . Interaction is one of the essential psychological needs of human being for mental growth. Due to lack of public space and factors like security, privacy moreover changes in life style causing limitation of using these spaces and limiting the users. . The research has undertaken by surveys; a number of observations; interviews with the concern authorities; a questionnaire survey on the users and secondary data from various resources. ...
In 1990, Despite TV was working on a special issue on the poll tax called Despite the Poll tax. The proposed poll tax was despised throughout the country. It was a blatantly extortionate tax which required all individuals, regardless of wealth, to pay the same amount, and anti-poll tax chapters sprang up across the country. Despite the Poll Tax was not so much focused on the inequities of tax, but how the law would necessitate ID cards, which were the origin of infamous SA pass laws during aparthied. The tax would offer a great deal of social control and create a data blackmarket. The tax itself was therefore a colonial instrument. It was actually the second time that the British government had tried to institute such a tax. The first time was in the 14th century and led to a famous peasants revolt ...

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is the cerebral cortex covering the front part of the frontal lobe. This brain region has been implicated in planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behaviour. The basic activity of this brain region is considered to be orchestration of thoughts and actions in accordance with internal goals. The most typical psychological term for functions carried out by the prefrontal cortex area is executive function. Executive function relates to abilities to differentiate among conflicting thoughts, determine good and bad, better and best, same and different, future consequences of current activities, working toward a defined goal, prediction of outcomes, expectation based on actions, and social control (the ability to suppress urges that, if not suppressed, could lead to socially unacceptable outcomes). The frontal cortex supports concrete rule learning, while more anterior regions along the rostro-caudal axis of the ...
Whether he actually made that statement or not, the reality of the matter is that it is quite true. By getting all of the rest of us deep into debt, the elite can just sit back and slowly but surely become even wealthier over time. Meanwhile, as the rest of us work endless hours to pay our bills, the truth is that we are spending our best years working to enrich someone else.. Much has been written about the men and women that control the world. Whether you wish to call them the elite, the establishment or the globalists, the truth is that most of us understand who they are. And how they control all of us is not some sort of giant conspiracy. Ultimately, it is actually very simple. Money is a form of social control, and by getting the rest of us into as much debt as possible they are able to get all of us to work for their economic benefit.. It starts at a very early age. We greatly encourage our young people to go to college, and we tell them to not even worry about what it will cost. ...
by Richard Rohr. Most religion is highly legitimating religion. It is used for social control and public order both by the powers that be and by people who want to be in control. This limited use of religion has allowed much of Christian history to participate in a toxic and unjust environment--just as long as we have a personal relationship with Jesus. This will not work anymore; in fact, it never did.. If Jesus is indeed the Savior of the world (John 4:42), we must not, we cannot, continue to think of salvation as merely a private matter. We are wasting our time trying to convert individuals without also challenging corporate sin and institutionalized evil. Otherwise, we send momentarily changed people back into the world; now they think they are godly, but they are the opposite of godly, and the disguise is perfect. As Jesus says, the last state of the house is worse than the first (Matthew 12:45).. Truly transformed people change the world; while fundamentally unchanged people soon ...
A liberal in economics, the French President, increased social control and attacked the possibility of becoming responsible for ones own life. There is another path being taken lately by French politics: ending the jungle of free competition to foster wealth, power and knowledge.. Emmanuel Macron as a promoter of unbridled economic liberalism, the case was heard. By abolishing the wealth tax or by modifying the labor code, perhaps the President surprised by the brutality and radical nature of his bias, but this course was expected. Macron, on the other hand, now reveals the other side of his economic liberalism: an attack on individual and collective freedoms, a profound contempt for democracy, secondary attention for human rights.. With his smooth style, his kindness and his modernity on his shoulder, candidate Macron had threaded the pearls on the wind of freedom that he intended to blow on our great country of human rights. And we discover, Patatras, a proponent of ordinances instead of ...
Fourth in a series about places that have become special to my friends and me, as weve ventured there together year after year to share good fellowship, and sometimes to witness the mysteries of creation.. Close friends have heard me talk about Mel Gray, my art teacher from the seventh to the twelfth grades, who became a mentor for much of my life, the first among a small group of elders Ive cultivated, people whove accumulated priceless knowledge and wisdom and who teach by example. In our rural farming community, school functioned as a repressive form of social control, bullying us into narrow conformity; some of our teachers rebelled against that system, befriending me and my fellow struggling outsiders and welcoming us into their homes and lives, but among them, Mel was special. He lived and breathed art, but in addition, he shared the love of nature, the love of crafting and building and self-reliance, that I had inherited from my father and grandfather. His curiosity was limitless, and ...

If Fintans analysis is as spot on as I suspect it is, then perhaps this is a kind of antithesis to that agenda - that, yes, there is a duality to the universe, but perhaps its an imposed, holographic, false duality. That truth lies actually beyond black and white, left and right, male and female, etc., in a third direction, beyond conventional understandings. Can we go as far as to say that social control perhaps depends heavily on us buying into all dualities? The reason we have primarily two political agendas/parties - because the endless back and forth pendulum effect of left-right politics is how you mass hypnotize? A third direction would be the guy in the gorilla suit, hidden by everyone frantic search for the truth ...

Clearly, just determining an attack probably came from an IP address likely located geographically within the borders of a certain country is not sufficient specificity for attribution of a cyber-attack to a specific actor. In order to deter future attacks from these actors, the U.S, must first be able to identify the actual actors and motivations behind the attacks. Deterring the first two levels of attacks could be possible if the third party attackers knew the country from which they operated would take action against them. This essentially transfers deterrence from the U.S. to that country and, as shown previously in the Deterrence section, depending on other countries to investigate and prosecute cyber acts that are illegal in the U.S. is fraught with challenges. State-ignored, encouraged, shaped, and coordinated attacks would be very difficult to deter. The states knowledge and encouragement of these attacks indicate they would not assist in enforcing any threat of U.S. law enforcement ...
Q: What percentage of random tests should be conducted each year for an employer to maintain an effective deterrence and detection program?. Answer: There is no established optimum percentage of random tests that will ensure the most effective deterrence and detection program. Logically, a very small percentage (e.g., 5 percent) may not be sufficient to deter or detect someone abusing an illicit substance, while a very high percentage (e.g., 95 percent) might be much more than is needed to maintain an effective program. The Department of Transportation permits the percentage of random tests to vary depending on the positive rate. In some cases, an industry is permitted to test at a 10 percent random rate while another industry is required to test at a 50 percent rate.
