In social movement theory, a social movement organization (often capitalized in academic literature as Social Movement Organization or abbreviated as SMO) is an organized component of a social movement (SM). SMO usually is only part of a particular social movement; in other words, a specific social movement is usually composed of many social movement organizations - formal organizations that share movements goals.[1] Social movement organizations usually have coordinating roles in social movements, but do not actually employ or direct most of the participants, who are part of a wider social movement community. Social movement organizations carry out the tasks that are necessary for any social movement to survive and to be successful. For instance, the civil rights movement was a social movement composed of specific social movement organizations (like SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) or CORE (Congress of Racial Equality)).[1] PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) ...

This report tells the story of the first 30 years of Marys Center, documenting its evolution from a basement clinic to a nationally recognized federally qualified health center serving nearly 55,000 participants in 2018. Marys Centers ongoing experience provides a useful framework for understanding the benefits and opportunities of providing comprehensive medical, social, and educational services in underresourced communities. It also highlights some of the challenges to implementing and sustaining such an approach.. As Marys Center enters its fourth decade, its leadership is interested in more precisely defining the theory of change behind its social change model, both to rigorously evaluate its effectiveness and to provide a model for other health care organizations interested in addressing the social determinants of health. This report describes Marys Centers social change model-an integrated care approach to addressing the social determinants of health-including its progression over ...

For a number of years now I have been digging into network approaches to social change, including supporting collaborative network formation and development at national, regional, state and local levels around a number of issues, from food insecurity to health inequity to environmental conservation to economic decline and stagnation. While there have been promising advances made in many spaces and places to build trust and connection across various lines of difference (geographic, sectoral, cultural, ethnic, racial) and also to achieve alignment around shared goals and shared identity, significant change has been slow to come and while I know it is important to be realistic about time, I keep feeling that there is a missing link between the work of network development and what is often held up as the goal of system change. I will admit that increasingly I find the stated goal of system change a bit hollow and too big, too abstract. Change from what to what? For the sake of what and whom? ...

In this dissertation, I argue that we can look to particular aspects of theatre and performance to help us engage in empathy that is respectful and dialogic, that seeks not to consume anothers experience, but rather to engage it. As a work of theatre scholarship, this dissertation seeks to reframe the debate over whether or not theatre is the ideal site of empathy, and whether such empathy can motivate social change. Rather than arguing for or against empathy, I suggest that we must ask what kind of empathy best promotes social change and how the theatre can help us encourage that empathy. I advocate a model of empathy based on a sense of parity, dialogue, and non-linearity. Empathy, I argue, is not a state or a feeling with a stable goal (understanding), but rather a process. As such, it entails an affective and critical labor that requires us to meet the other as our equal and to entertain, imaginatively, his or her perspective on the world. Because the empathy I advocate takes the form of ...

In order to end intimate partner violence, the problem must be addressed and confronted at the societal, community, relationship, and individual levels. For public health to succeed in the 21st century, we need to create fundamentally new approaches compared with those pursued in the 20th century. Some of the greatest global successes (e.g., small pox eradication, soon to be followed by polio, hopefully) were massive efforts that required immense ingenuity, commitment, courage, and effectiveness, but these efforts still did not involve much social change. For instance, the technology of immunization has not changed how people work, how much they earn, or where and how they live.

Despite idealistic intentions, teachers at all levels and in most subjects are often accused of fostering Western hegemony and linguistic imperialism. However, a unique writing project in the southern African country of Namibia demonstrates that teachers can become agents of social change. One part of this project is an anthology of writings by indigenous women about their struggles with HIV and AIDS. Because AIDS has become a pandemic, now afflicting more than 35 million people worldwide, this anthology from Namibia, produced by the Womens Leadership Centre, provides both a local and global (or glocal) orientation to the problem. It demonstrates the value of English in promoting health and human rights issues and more generally of empowering marginalized populations. It is also a supreme example of auto-ethnography, an account of ones own experiences as grounded in and reflecting a culture, which has become a cutting-edge form of qualitative research. This paper explains how this grass ...

On May 30, 2009, I revisited Tianchan Yifu Theatre in Shanghai to watch a few highlights from the Yue opera.1 Among the five highlights presented that night, one was a modern-attire piece on Mao Zedongs first wife, Yang Kaihui, performed by a gender-straight cast. That piece paled in comparison with the other four classic Yue opera highlights performed by an all-female cast. Among the four, Meeting at Yingtais Chamber in Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai (Liangzhu) and Presenting the Phoenix Cap in Emerald Hairpin (Biyu zan) left the deepest impression.. I observed the audience at the performances. Many of them were elderly women. However, there were also tourists, expats, white-collar professionals, and young lovers. That night, sitting among a full house at the Yue opera in Shanghai, I could not help contemplating the enduring presence of the womens Yue opera in our contemporary life..
