Social skill and language are known to relate, not least in the example of those with specific language impairment (SLI). However, most of the research examining this trend has been conducted on young primary school age children and the nature of the relationships is unclear. Furthermore, little is known about which young people in general have social difficulties and whether language, social cognition, and social skills are directly associated at this age. In this study, a large cohort made up of young people with a history of SLI (N = 134) and a typically developing (TD) group (N = 124) of the same age were followed up in their final year of compulsory schooling (aged 16). Language, social cognition, social skills, and functional social outcomes (friendships and levels of social activity) were assessed using tasks and questionnaires. Modest associations were found between social cognition, language, and social behaviours, the strongest being between language and social cognition. Regression ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Illness perceptions, coping, benefit finding, and adjustment in individuals with Hepatitis C. AU - Langston, Simon. AU - Edwards, Mark S.. AU - Lyvers, Michael. PY - 2018/2/1. Y1 - 2018/2/1. N2 - Objective: To investigate the ability of illness perceptions, adaptive, and maladaptive coping strategies, and benefit finding to predict physical and psychosocial adjustment among individuals diagnosed with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), within an expanded self-regulatory model of illness (SRM). Method: A total of 126 participants with HCV completed an online questionnaire assessing illness perceptions, coping, benefit finding, and four adjustment outcomes, depression, physical functioning, life satisfaction and positive affect. Results: Illness perceptions made significant contributions to the variance in adjustment outcomes across the four psychosocial and physical adjustment areas. At an individual level, personal control, identification with HCV symptoms, perceptions related to ...
Psychosocial Adjustment and the Meaning of Social Support for Visually Impaired Adolescents, Online, This article presents research derived from a nationwide study conducted at the University of Amsterdam into the psychosocial adjustment and the meaning of social support for Dutch adolescents with visual impairments. The findings indicate that social support, especially the support of peers, is important to adolescents with visual impairments. The differences between visually impaired and sighted adolescents proved to be small, but significant.
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the typical aging process in adults with Down syndrome, focusing on its variability. The sample comprised 120 adults with Down syndrome who were free of dementia. Ages ranged from 20 to 69 years. Each participant was assessed on cognitive functioning and social adaptation, and was checked for the presence of psychopathological disorders. Results revealed an age-related deterioration in both cognitive and social adaptation skills, the extent of this decline depending on the dimension under scrutiny, and interindividual variability in aging profiles.
The way couples jointly manage pregnancy-related demands may prevent both members from experiencing psychosocial maladjustment after childbirth. This study examined (a) changes in dyadic coping (DC) and indicators of psychosocial adjustment [depressive and anxiety symptoms and quality of life (QoL)] from the second trimester of pregnancy (T1) to 6 weeks postpartum (T2), (b) the actor and partner effects of DC at T1 on couples adjustment at T2, and (c) whether changes in DC over time would be associated with changes in the adjustment of both women and their partners. This study adopted a prospective quantitative dyadic longitudinal design. A total of 303 couples from Portugal answered self-report questionnaires assessing DC, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and QoL at T1, of which 290 were contacted at T2 to complete the same measures (n = 138 couples returned the questionnaires). Results showed that first-time fathers QoL and both first and experienced fathers stress communication decreased over time

The proposition of this study was that training in social skills and subsequent stimulation to practice the skills developed in the intervention would favor the social competence of children surviving brain tumors. The results support this proposition, because the data from the interviews with the dyads indicated an improvement in the general standard of social competence of the two children following the intervention based on social skills training. These findings corroborate those from previous studies that highlight the effectiveness of interventions focused on social skills training (Barakat et al., 2003; Devine et al., 2016; Schulte, Vannatta et al., 2014).. Although they underwent the same intervention procedures, the two children demanded specific procedures to address the sequelae of their illness. Alan and Betina had different sequelae, but they shared the fear of being rejected because of these characteristics, which may be attributable to the fact that they did not have the skills ...
The purpose of this study is to conduct a randomized effectiveness trial to determine whether adding a preventive intervention at the transition from elementary to middle school is effective and cost effective in terms of ameliorating outcomes such as drug and tobacco use, participation in HIV- risking sexual behavior, delinquency, mental health problems, and school failure for young adolescents in foster care. The proposed LINKS intervention marries the goals of child welfare and educational systems. The aims are: a) to determine the effectiveness of the LINKS intervention on key behavioral health and school adjustment outcomes, b) to examine mechanisms of action; specifically the mediating effects of placement failure on outcomes, c) to examine the moderating role of fidelity on outcomes, and d) to examine cost effectiveness and cost avoidance of LINKS ...
In preschoolers, externalizing behavior problems are a primary cause of consultation. It is known that externalizing behavior (EB) could result from individual and environmental risk factors. Individual risk factors included notably social cognition (SC) and executive functions (EF). A high level of EB has usually been related to dysfunction in SC and to poor skills in EF. The aim of the present experimental study is to compare the impact of two very targeted child-oriented trainings in the increasing of social competence and decreasing of EB in preschoolers. One training targeted SC abilities while the second one targeted EF capacities. These two trainings were compared on 48 preschoolers presenting clinically relevant levels of EB. The comparison of those results highlighted how each training could help preschoolers with EB in their behavior, emotion regulation and social adjustment. In comparison to a waiting-list control-group, the two trainings were effective in decreasing EB and differentiated

At this time, estimates are that the COVID-19 virus has infected 200,000 people worldwide, and killed more than 3,000. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. While we hope this virus will be eradicated soon, CAS has taken measures to reduce the risk to its employees and clients.. In response to this crisis, CAS President Jonathan Stone stated, The decision has been made to allow managers the option to work remotely for at least the next two weeks as our nation contends with this virus. The exact duration of this time period is unknown and dependent on factors beyond our control. It is important for the health of ourselves and the company as a whole. Most CAS offices are now closed to the public, but ...
Intuitively, we feel that children should be raised by two married parents living together. But an avalanche of studies over the past 40 years shows that this isnt what they need. Research shows that about 80-percent of children of divorce adapt well and see no lasting negative effects on their grades, social adjustment, or mental health. So what do kids need?
Poor childhood conditions, such as exposure to poverty and stunting, are associated with long-term disadvantages to health, education, social adjustment and earnings.. In South Africa, 63% of children younger than 18 live in poverty: that is, on less than R923 a month or R31 a day. And 27% of 0-3 year olds are stunted, a condition which results from long-term undernutrition, mainly of essential vitamins and minerals. This hampers the development of lean mass - skeleton, brain, internal organ size and function.. Children living in poverty and who are stunted tend to go to school later. They also tend to learn less, pass fewer grades, leave school earlier and earn less as adults. In turn, their children are more likely to grow up in poverty, lacking essential nutrients and learning experiences, trapping families and children in poverty for generations.. It is this negative cycle that most concerns politicians and economists. Countries cant grow at the pace of their most able people because too ...

Our old pair, Hadar and Hamal, went through some social adjustment. Hadar, since his injury two years ago, is incapable of mating. Hamal was seen being vigorously courted by Mimosa and for a few days there was great concern for Hadars well being. Had he and Mimosa fought? Was he injured or worse? Apparently not, for a few days after the switch Hadar and Hamal were back together and both looked fit. As they age they are going grey. Hamals forelegs will probably never get any better (she was injured years ago and limps) but shes obviously strong enough to mate. The fact that Hamal may still be fertile though she is well into her 20s is perhaps indication that these horses can live a long time when not exposed to the farm environment for their whole lives. She and Hadar would have spent the least amount of concentrated time on the farm and thus would have had the least exposure to that environment during their early years ...

Dr Congdon does not accept that accelerating a childs education will result in an emotionally fragile adult. The standard argument is that they may not cope psychologically, but the truth is these children are usually emotionally mature. So why not give them the opportunity? Teachers are often very reluctant to push children, citing potential problems with the childs social and emotional adjustment. Its also a good idea to talk to the child and ask how they feel about being put up a class ...
Group sizes depend on the age and needs of the children. For children who are younger and more needs, groups are limited to 4 children. For older children and teenagers, groups are usually run with 6 to 8 participants in each group.. Usually, before the group commences, each child is screened for the social skills that need to be targeted. Goals for each child would then be developed. Children with similar goals would be placed in the same group. Groups are run regularly and the number of sessions depends on the group goals. During the groups, a clear format is followed to have a set beginning/end time, and time for various activities.. ...

The UI is too large, as other users have pointed out. I feel as though I need a third monitor dedicated to this one application. A DPI Adjustment scale similar to windows (smaller, not larger as Windows can already do that for you) would be ideal. If not, then we should be able to change the UI back to the Lync UI, or be able to choose from a minimalist view.. There is a market for Touch UI like the Surface Pro, however many business applications still run on a desktop. We should have an option to have a UI dedicated to the device we are using, not a one size fits all approach. ...

The intergenerational transmission of school adjustment was explored in a sample of 213 children and their fathers. The fathers were participants in a longitudinal study that began when they were in the 4th grade, and their children have been assessed at the ages of 21 months and 3, 5, and 7 years. Two components of school adjustment were measured: academic achievement and peer relations.

This chapter focuses on the relationship between social competence and the empathy-related responding capabilities of children and adolescents. Studies show that there is a possibility of alteration in the quality of social interactions because of sympathy and empathy, and there are more opportunities for children with high-quality social interactions. The chapter discusses the role of development in improving empathy-related responding, as well as the effect of gender and socioeconomic status on the association of social competence and empathy-related responding. It also presents an experiment designed to test the social skills training effects on empathy and sympathy.
The book leaves out adaptations that are related to different human populations. This is not surprising, as most Evolutionary Psychologists are skeptical of race-specific adaptations (Kurzban, Tooby, & Cosmides, 2001), preferring instead to believe that most adaptations occurred in the late stone age and thus are shared by all human beings are genetically very similar (Tooby & Cosmides, 1992, 2005). Nonetheless, some issues should be address. Phenotypic differences directly impacting athletic ability vary between Africans, Europeans, and Orientals (Rushton, 2000). One possibility is that this is an adaptation to different physical environments, these could equally be social adaptations. If different cultural styles existed in these physical locales for a sufficiently long duration (perhaps no more than four hundred years, see see Pinker, 2002, 111, or a few thousand, see Buller, 2005, 56) then evolution would lead to adaptations for that cultural style.. Perhaps a less speculative case of ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This paper provides new evidence on the effects of overseas FDI on the skill-mix of multinational firms home-country operations. The analysis exploits Chinas WTO accession to identify the impact of outward investment into a low-wage economy and uses plant-level data to investigate changes in industrial structure within firms driven by plant closures. As predicted by models of vertical FDI, the paper demonstrates that overseas investment in low-wage economies is associated with asymmetric effects on workers in low- and high-skill industries in the home economy and, in particular, with firms closing down plants in low-skill industries. According to Erikson (1959), our path through life develops as a series of successfully resolved social adjustments. Each adjustment phase is the potential marker of later health and pathology. Eriksons stages involve establishing a sense of trust in others, developing a sense of identity in society, and helping the next generation prepare for the future.. Examination of the current literature concerning the frontal lobes reveals an almost universal belief that surgical removals from this area must produce serious psychologic defects. The evidence on which the belief is founded, however, is not nearly so satisfactory as one might suppose. In this paper I propose to review and evaluate the published reports which attempt to analyze the functions of the frontal lobes on the basis of neurosurgical material. In the review, emphasis is laid on problems of method which are common to any such analysis, whatever region of the brain may be concerned. The occasion for a reevaluation of theories concerned with the frontal lobes was a fortunate opportunity to observe the social adjustment of K. M., a patient of Dr. Wilder Penfields, six years after a partial bilateral frontal lobectomy (Hebb and Penfield, 1 1940). The patients excellent recovery showed that a large bilateral removal is

In this paper, we have described one individual-level measure of exposure to the Well London programme: self-report participation at the time of trial outcome assessment survey; and three neighbourhood-level measures of exposure: neighbourhood prevalence of self-report participation (from survey); and project-contact event rate and the amount of project time delivered during the 3.5-year programme, calculated from programme monitoring data. The results from the adult household survey conducted at follow-up show a modest level of self-reported exposure and that individuals with lower levels of education, men who were in work or aged 35-54 years and women who were unemployed and seeking work, were less likely to report having taken part in the Well London programme. This indicates potential inequity of access for those who might benefit most from the intervention. At the neighbourhood level, there was correlation between the two programme monitoring-derived measures, but neither was correlated ...
Because suppressor use is increasingly popular, PWS wanted to increase the MK1 and MK2s user friendliness in this area. While the original MK1 could be suppressed by simply changing the buffer weight, this was hardly conducive to on-the-fly mission adaptability. The MK2, on the other hand, cannot benefit from a change in buffer weight to counteract the bolt carrier speed increase caused by a suppressor. Adding more weight behind the bolt group in the form of a heavy buffer will not slow the MK2s bolt down like it will in an AR-15 platform. This is due to the heavy mass of a .308 bolt group. As a result, suppressing a .308 AR-type rifle is difficult. There is simply too much gas volume and pressure to allow for proper functioning without some kind of gas adjustment to account for the suppressor. The need for an adjustment at the gas block was obvious. PWSs desire to be more suppressor friendly led them to adopting an adjustable gas block as well. The PWS gas adjustment is very simple. In the ...
