CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the intake of 25 g of p-EVOO was able to modulate, in postprandial time, the antioxidant profile and the expression of inflammation and of the oxidative stress-related genes, such as SOD1, USF1 and CAT. We also observed a significant reduction of MDA and oxLDL, plasma metabolites of oxidative stress. Our data show that the postprandial intake of phenols and antioxidants can reduce the inflammatory pathway and oxidative stress and therefore the risk of muscle injuries and early atherosclerosis in professional soccer players. More studies on a larger population are necessary before definitive conclusions can be draw.. ...

The Western Canada Soccer League was a soccer league in Canada. The league operated for eight seasons over a nine-year period from 1963 to 1971 and eventually operated across nine cities in four Canadian provinces and one American state. In the 1960s, the Western Canada Soccer League was one of four major leagues in Canadian soccer alongside the Pacific Coast League, the National Soccer League of Ontario/Quebec, and the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League.[1] In 1963, the league featured 10 clubs across five cities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. In 1967, the league expanded to Manitoba[2], thus becoming the first Canadian soccer league to operate a league schedule across three provinces. The league later added teams in British Columbia and, for one season only, a team in Washington, United States. Along with a regular season schedule that usually operated from May to August, the Molson Cup playoffs took place in August or September. Teams also participated in other competitions including ...

Heading is such an integral part of the game that I think its important for us to know whether or not its actually dangerous based on scientific data rather than anecdotal evidence, says Tom Kaminski, professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology at the University of Delaware. Ten years ago, Kaminski began to document heading exposures in both collegiate and high school female soccer players. With a battery of neuropsychological and balance tests administered both before and after the soccer season, he found that heading did not affect short-term neurocognitive function in this pool of athletes.. But is the same true for young women who have already sustained concussions?. Neuroscience major Cameron Forbes was interested in this question as a topic for his senior thesis, and Kaminskis database proved to be a perfect source of information for him. Advised by Kaminski and Joseph Glutting, professor in UDs School of Education, Forbes conducted a study to examine ...

Canada Soccer | United Bid Committee: Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ could create more than $5 billion in economic activity for North America | Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ could generate more than $5 billion in short-term economic activity, including supporting approximately 40,000 jobs and more than $1 billion in incremental worker earnings across North America, according to a study done by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a leading global management consulting firm. Canada, Mexico and the United States are bidding to host the 48-team tournament in 2026, which will be the largest in FIFA World Cup™ history. The overall net benefit to the region would be $3 - $4 billion. The study further estimates that individual host cities could expect to see approximately $160 - $620 million in incremental economic activity. That translates to a net benefit of approximately $90 - $480 million per city after accounting for potential public costs.

The definition of injury used follows that of many other authors1,16,17 and includes four subdivisions of severity.18-21 The inclusion of slight injuries (up to three days out of competition and training) allows calculations to be made about injuries that are reportable under the Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations (RIDDOR).22 Reporting of injuries that prevented normal participation for less than 48 hours was deemed impractical because of the working practices of football academies.. When considering the findings of the audit, it is important to understand the academy games programme. Up to the age of 13, games are played with reduced team members-that is, seven against seven. After this age, games involving 11 against 11 are allowed. This may obviously alter the load on the players and hence affect the injury rates.. In professional football, the impact of injury on a club can be measured in terms of competitive matches missed and therefore costed against a ...
In this study, a muscle strain was by far the most commonly diagnosed injury to the posterior thigh. Hamstring strains accounted for 12% of all injuries sustained over the two seasons and for the loss of 90 training days and 15 matches per club per season.. Each club sustained an average of five hamstring injuries per season. This is comparable to an Australian football study which observed an average of six hamstring strains per club per season, with hamstring strains representing 15% of all injuries.3. The high incidence of injury in this muscle group may be partly because the group functions over two joints3,5,18 and is therefore subject to stretch at more than one point.3,18 Also, the greater proportion of fast twitch fibres in the hamstring muscles compared with other thigh and leg muscles means that they are capable of high force production.5 Common muscle imbalance patterns may invoke the use of the hamstrings as a slow twitch muscle, which may predispose the muscle to injury when ...

This study reports the effects of a hypnosis intervention on a professional soccer player who reported low self-efficacy and a negative mood state relative to his soccer performance. Pre- and postintervention data were collected via a Soccer Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SSEQ) that consisted of 10 items relating to good soccer performance, the Trait Sport Confidence Inventory (TSCI), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and a Soccer Performance Measure (SPM). An intervention program consisting of eight hypnosis sessions was conducted. These sessions comprised the presentation of ego-strengthening suggestions. Both visual and statistical analysis revealed substantial increases in trait sport confidence, self-efficacy, positive affect, and soccer performance, as well as a substantial decrease in negative affect over the course of the intervention. The findings of this case study suggest that hypnosis can be used to enhance self-efficacy, affect, and sport performance. A number of ...
Andrew Zimbalist has written a timely and important book addressing a topic of vital importance for taxpayers, sports fans, and public officials around the world. The May 2015 indictment of a number of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) executives by the U.S. attorney general for corruption related to the awarding of the 2010 Copa America soccer tournament and the subsequent resignation of newly reelected FIFA president Sepp Blatter highlight the seedy underside of the process of allocating sports mega-events, which Zimbalist examines in detail. The increasingly vocal opposition to Boston s bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games also provides a rich backdrop for this book. Circus Maximus is required reading for anyone interested in a thorough, no-holds-barred account of how sports mega-events are awarded and what impact these events have on host communities.. The soccer drill doesnt have to be as elaborate as this Barcelona drill. And you dont need that many players working within the drill. Plus, this is something you can work on individually. The key is just adding different skills together and then building off of them. Thats the key thing to do in soccer training sequences - which in many ways is similar to soccer patterns of play. Every top level soccer team works on sequences of play and patterns of play. Its about triangles and support from up high in the attack, at the wings and then in the back. Players have to move and make runs at the right time to offer support and keep the sequences of passes going.. The idea is to train for soccer in sequences or a series of skills since in a game youre never going to stand still and juggle or calmly knock the ball against the wall without any pressure. In a game, youre constantly doing a series of different moves or skills while youre under pressure from a defender. So it makes sense to try to ...

Soccer is a complicated physical and technical sport that requires multiple energy systems dominating throughout the game. A match usually last 90-95 minutes, with a 15 minute break at half time. One would assume that soccer is mostly dominated by aerobic fitness and the aerobic energy system, but it is not. Soccer consists of short bursts of speed and strength followed by a long chase or battle with opponents, all of which are performed by the anaerobic energy system.
Goalkeepers are typically the last defensive line for soccer teams aiming to minimise goals being conceded, with match rules permitting ball handling within a specific area. Goalkeepers are also involved in initiating some offensive plays, and typically remain in close proximity to the goal line while covering ~ 50% of the match distances of outfield players; hence, the competitive and training demands of goalkeepers are unique to their specialised position. Indeed, isolated performance tests differentiate goalkeepers from outfield players in multiple variables. With a view to informing future research, this review summarised currently available literature reporting goalkeeper responses to: (1) match play (movement and skilled/technical demands) and (2) isolated performance assessments (strength, power, speed, aerobic capacity, joint range of motion). Literature searching and screening processes yielded 26 eligible records and highlighted that goalkeepers covered ~ 4-6 km on match day whilst ...

Background: Agility in general and change-of-direction speed (CoD) in particular represent important performance determinants in elite soccer. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of a 6-week neuromuscular training program on agility performance, and to determine differences in movement times between the slower and faster turning directions in elite soccer players. Materials and Methods: Twenty male elite soccer players from the Stade Rennais Football Club (Ligue 1, France) participated in this study. The players were randomly assigned to a neuromuscular training group (NTG, n = 10) or an active control (CG, n = 10) according to their playing position. NTG participated in a 6-week, twice per week neuromuscular training program that included CoD, plyometric and dynamic stability exercises. Neuromuscular training replaced the regular warm-up program. Each training session lasted 30 min. CG continued their regular training program. Training volume was similar ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! In soccer penalty kicks, goalkeepers choose their action before they can clearly observe the kick direction. An analysis of 286 penalty kicks in top leagues and championships worldwide shows that given the probability distribution of kick direction, the optimal strategy for goalkeepers is to stay in the goals center. Goalkeepers, however, almost always jump right or left. We propose the following explanation for this behavior: because the norm is to jump, norm theory (Kahneman and Miller, 1986) implies that a goal scored yields worse feelings for the goalkeeper following inaction (staying in the center) than following action (jumping), leading to a bias for action. The omission bias, a bias in favor of inaction, is reversed here because the norm here is reversed - to act rather than to choose inaction. The claim that jumping is the norm is supported by a second study, a survey conducted with 32 top professional goalkeepers. The seemingly biased decision making is

Aim: This study investigated how performance was affected after soccer players, in a postprandial state, ingested a 7% carbohydrate (CHO) solution compared to a placebo (0% CHO) during a simulated soccer match. Methods: Using a double-blind placebo-controlled design, 22 trained male league soccer players (age: 24 ± 7 years, wt: 73.4 ± 12.0 kg, VO2max: 51.8 ± 4.3 mL O2/kg/min) completed two trials, separated by 7 days, during which they ingested, in random order, 700 mL of either a 7% CHO or placebo drink during a simulated soccer match. Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), agility, timed and run to fatigue were measured during the trials. Results: Change in agility times was not altered by CHO vs. placebo ingestion (0.57 ± 1.48 vs. 0.66 ± 1.00, p = 0.81). Timed runs to fatigue were 381 ± 267 s vs. 294 ± 159 s for the CHO and placebo drinks, respectively (p = 0.11). Body mass modified the relationship between time to fatigue and drink ingestion (p = 0.02 for drink × body mass), such that lower

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The association of muscular performance with risk of injury and functional performance in different sports has been reported in numerous studies in the literature. However, there is a paucity of data that characterizes the muscular performance in Brazilian professional soccer athletes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to make a descriptive analysis of parameters related to the muscular performance of this population. METHODS: The sample of this study was composed of 117 athletes belonging to professional soccer clubs in Minas Gerais State. In order to evaluate the muscular performance of the athletes, an isokinetic dynamometer was used and the tests involved maximum voluntary contractions of the selected muscles. Hip abductors and ...
The aim of the study was to examine how players perceptions of sociocultural factors and intra- and interpersonal aspects of sporting experiences may have influenced the emotions, cognitions, and behaviours of elite female soccer players prior to the occurrence of ACL injuries. The research questions guiding the study were: (a) how did female elite soccer players perceive that their psychosocial experiences were related to their cognitive, physiological, and emotional states prior to their ACL injuries, and (b) how did the players feel their perceived states influenced their behaviours prior to injury occurrence. The participants consisted of the total population of female players (N = 18) competing in the Swedish womens elite league, who incurred a total ACL tear during the 2012 season. Introduction. The demands on the visual system during athletic performance are among the most rigorous of any activity. Because vision influences the capacity of an athlete to perform the tasks of a sport, scientific research has been performed to investigate the link between skill and vision. Visual system is highly related with proprioceptive system and these systems are affecting mechanism of injuries.. Methods. 30 subjects (15 injured soccer players and 15 non-injured soccer players) with an average of 22 ±0,93 and 22 ±0,80 respectively. We measured visual concentration (VC) with tachistoscope, eye-hand coordination (EHC) with LaFayette Eye-Hand Coordination Model 58024A, both hand coordination (BHC) with LaFayette Two-Arm Coordination Model 32532 and anticipation time (AT) with LaFayette Bassin Anticipation Timer Model 35575. Data were collected with a questionnaire named Nordic Questionnaire for the analysis of musculoskeletal symptoms in last 12 months. SPSS 14 were used for statistical ...
Khalil Khayambashi, PT, PhD, a professor in the Department of Sports Sciences at the University of Isfahan, implemented and oversaw the data collection for the Isfahan-USC study.. The hip is the focal point between the heavier trunk and upper and lower extremities, Khayambashi said. To have good balance, superior hip muscle strength is mandatory.. The Belgian authors hypothesized that the ability to attenuate impact during high-velocity maneuvers may be limited or inadequate in youth soccer players with poor hip extension strength, and that this limitation may be exacerbated under fatigued conditions.. The authors of both studies suggested hip-strengthening exercises can be integrated into soccer training programs to help reduce ankle sprain risk. Simple exercises to improve hip strength that could easily be added to soccer training programs include lunges and resistance-band exercises.. Interestingly, the findings of the two soccer studies appear to contrast with those of a 2006 AJSM study ...

Association football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world, and the growing recognition that playing soccer is associated with CTE has significant public health implications. However, the health benefits of playing sport are also recognised to reduce all cause mortality, particularly from cardiovascular causes. A public health policy limiting or restricting access to contact sports, which is not carefully considered, may therefore cause more harm than good. This retrospective case control study identified former professional footballers and compared mortality outcomes with a cohort of matched controls.. 7,676 registered soccer players were recruited by searching the records of the Scottish football museum and professional soccer clubs for registered professionals. The records (name and date of birth) were then linked with the community health number (a health record number unique to each individual in Scotland) on a probabilistic basis. Former soccer players were matched to other ...

Now that Team USA has emerged winless for the second time in the last three World Cups, the quadrennial gnashing of teeth has begun once again. As poorly as the team has historically performed in international competition, one fact that is overlooked is the popularity of soccer youth leagues. Id guess that at least as many kids in America, if not more, play soccer as football, baseball, or basketball. Theres a reason we have the term soccer mom but not baseball mom. So why doesnt this popularity translate into success at the international level? A couple of theories:. 1) Our best athletes choose to play football and basketball, whereas the best athletes in other countries choose to play soccer. This theory assumes that sports skills are fungible. The best intramural basketball players at Virginia Tech were the varsity football players (the varsity basketball players werent allowed to compete in the intramural leagues). While this might be true for basketball and football, I believe that ...

We have found an association between the outcome of football matches and deaths from circulatory disease, for men but not women. The association relates to all competitive games played by the local professional football team over a five year period. It extends the observation of Witte et al5 that male mortality increased after a single important international match involving Holland, and allows for possible distortion by the effects of differential death rates by day of the week and month of the year.. We selected the four health authority areas because of the characteristics of the local professional football club. They are the largest clubs in this health region, and the only ones that spent the whole study period within the top two levels of professional football. In each case, the great majority of the football support within the population covered by the local health authority goes to that club. The effect was seen consistently in each area studied and, although the observed increase ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Do UK university football club players suffer neuropsychological impairment as a consequence of their football (soccer) play?. AU - Rutherford, Andrew. AU - Stephens, Richard. AU - Fernie, Gordon. AU - Potter, Douglas. N1 - Cited By (since 1996): 1 Export Date: 19 January 2011 Source: Scopus. PY - 2009/8. Y1 - 2009/8. N2 - Male players from football and rugby clubs and sportsmen from a variety of noncontact sports clubs at a UK university were compared on biographical and neuropsychological test measures. A data analysis paradigm was developed and employed to control the inflation of Type 1 error rate due to multiple hypotheses testing. Rugby players sustained most head injuries in their chosen sport, but neuropsychological tests of attention, memory, and executive function provided no evidence of performance impairment attributable to the number of head injuries sustained or the football, rugby, or noncontact sport groups. Footballers heading frequency was related to the number ...

Purpose: To analyze the association between body fluid changes evaluated by bioelectrical impedance vector analysis and dilution techniques over a competitive season in athletes. Methods: A total of 58 athletes of both sexes (men: age 18.7 [4.0] y and women: age 19.2 [6.0] y) engaging in different sports were evaluated at the beginning (pre) and 6 months after (post) the competitive season. Deuterium dilution and bromide dilution were used as the criterion methods to assess total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW), respectively; intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as TBW-ECW. Bioelectrical resistance and reactance were obtained with a phase-sensitive 50-kHz bioelectrical impedance analysis device; bioelectrical impedance vector analysis was applied. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess fat mass and fat-free mass. The athletes were empirically classified considering TBW change (pre-post, increase or decrease) according to sex. Results: Significant mean vector ...

You can watch the highlights here.. I admit, I have not been watching the full games ( I will now) but have been watching the highlights every night on the FIFA web site. The other day those cheating Swedes (damn you, kimpost) stole one from the American squad, sending them into a quarter final battle with Brazil, arguably the best team out there.. Much like how the Muslim world hates us because we allow our women folk to prance around uncovered, the soccer world hates us because we are so good at everything else but usually suck at soccer, so they try to screw us every chance they get with absolutely terrible officiating, and the USA/Brazil match was no different. First, that suspected holding call that gave them a free penalty kick, OK, make the call but dont toss the player, bullshit, so now they have to play the rest of the game one man short. Oh, and since she missed the first penalty kick, lets make up some other bullshit call and give her a second shot at it. You could plainly see on ...
Organic farm wins out over soccer fields by Bill Turque The Battle of Brickyard Road appears to be over, at least for the moment. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett announced Tuesday that he has abandoned plans to convert a popular Potomac organic farm operated for the last 30 years by Nick Maravell to soccer fields. The county leased the land from the Montgomery County School Board - owner of the 20-acre property - in 2011 with the idea of sub-leasing it Montgomery Soccer Inc., a private sports organization. The decision produced two lawsuits from neighbors - one asserting that the school board acted without transparancy to lease the property to the county, and the other opposed to soccer fields. In a letter to the board, Leggett announced without elaboration that the county was surrendering the lease. The board voted at a special meeting Tuesday evening to cancel its lease with the county. The land remains property of the board and is considered a possible future site for a school. turqueb

Boo ya! And ever since that first flurry of kicks, roughly 3 months ago, hes constantly dribbling the soccer ball. Dribbling. Is that what its called? I know thats what you call bouncing a basketball to move it down court, but is it the same for soccer? I could Google it but Im terrified that soccer related ads will start showing up in my email and newsfeed. Id rather Google animal with largest testicles or is human pancreas edible or am I secretly a woman trapped in a mans body? than have soccer related marketing target me. Thats my level of disdain for soccer.. Youre probably wondering why I hate soccer worse than Donald Trump hates well, everyone. First off, I played one season of soccer back in elementary school and I sucked at it. I know, I know, its hard to believe there was ever anything at which I did not excel. That should be proof enough that soccer is a ridiculous activity. If I wasnt good at it then, by default, it must actually be the thing itself that sucks, because ...

In a recent AFP article on sideline management of head and neck injuries, Dr. White-side correctly stated that there is no general agreement on clinical markers of concussion severity or on the appropriate management of concussions.1 However, experts have provided physicians with consensus guidelines to try to standardize the approach to sports concussion. These recommendations continue to evolve. Two recent consensus statements have garnered much attention in the sports medicine community because they present significant departures from current concussion management guidelines.2-4 One statement was a report from the First International Conference on Concussion in Sport, held in Vienna, Austria, in 2001,5 and the other was a report from the Second International Conference on Concussion in Sport, held in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2004.6 These conferences were organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, and the International ...
