Most snow removal by individuals is clearance of driveways and walkways. After heavy snowfalls, snow may be removed from roofs to reduce the risk of structural damage due to the weight. In places with light snow, brooms or other light instruments can be used to brush off snow from walks and other surfaces. In regions with more precipitation, snow is commonly removed with snow shovels, a large lightweight shovel used to push snow and lift it, and snow scoops or sleigh shovels, a large and deep hopper-like implement fitted with a wide handle and designed to scoop up a load of snow and slide it on any slippery surface to another location without lifting. Other tools include snow pushers and shovels with one or more wheels. Shovelling entails a considerable amount of physical effort and can strain the back and the heart. Each year many senior citizens and middle aged persons die from heart attacks while shovelling snow.[7] Snow blowers are often used by people unwilling or unable to perform this ...
Abstract. Acetaldehyde is a reactive intermediate in hydrocarbon oxidation. It is both emitted and taken up by snowpacks and photochemical and physical processes are probably involved. Understanding the reactivity of acetaldehyde in snow and its processes of physical and chemical exchanges requires the knowledge of its incorporation mechanism in snow crystals. We have performed a season-long study of the evolution of acetaldehyde concentrations in the subarctic snowpack near Fairbanks (65° N), central Alaska, which is subjected to a vigorous metamorphism due to persistent elevated temperature gradients in the snowpack, between 20 and 200° C m−1. The snowpack therefore almost entirely transforms into depth hoar. We have also analyzed acetaldehyde in a manipulated snowpack where temperature gradients were suppressed. Snow crystals there transformed much more slowly and their original shapes remained recognizable for months. The specific surface area of snow layers in both types of snowpacks ...
Snow Mold occurs when snow accumulates and then remains undisturbed for long periods on wet, unfrozen grass. This condition allows mold to germinate and spread in small patches throughout the lawn. Snow Mold is more prevalent in areas of greater snow accumulation, such as the edges of driveways and walks where snow is piled during shoveling and plowing. It also thrives in low-lying areas where moisture collects, as well as in other areas where snow takes longer to melt.. If you find Snow Mold on your lawn this spring, simply use a leaf rake to go over the affected areas to remove debris and stand the grass up to allow air to circulate. This alone is often enough for the grass to heal. Your first application of lawn fertilizer in the spring will also aid in the recovery process by helping your turf grow and push out the disease. In severe cases where raking and fertilizing fail the area may need to be reseeded.. ...
The three-layer snow model of Lynch-Stieglitz is coupled to the global catchment-based land surface model of the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations Seasonal to Interannual Prediction Project, and the combined models are used to simulate the growth and ablation of snow cover over the North American continent for the period of 1987-88. The various snow processes included in the three-layer model, such as snow melting and refreezing, dynamic changes in snow density, and snow insulating properties, are shown (through a comparison with the corresponding simulation using a much simpler snow model) to lead to an improved simulation of ground thermodynamics on the continental scale. This comparison indicates that the three-layer model, originally developed and validated at small experimental catchments, does indeed capture the important snow processes that control the growth and the ablation of continental-scale snowpack and its snow insulation capabilities.. ...

The cryosphere is a key component of the Earth system. The distribution of regional snow/ice cover is affected mainly by factors such as wind, topography, snowfall, and temperature. As global warming continues, extreme weather and climate events frequently occur, including snow/ice disasters. There are several types of snow/ice disasters on different spatial scales, such as snow and ice avalanche, drifting and blowing snow, snowstorm, flood, building collapse, traffic hazards, snow and ice accretion, etc., which cause great damages to human lives and the social economy. Thus, studies on the physical processes and formation mechanism of snow/ice disasters, prediction and early warning systems, as well as control engineering are of great significance to preventing snow/ice disasters from damaging the society. This research topic focuses on 1) blowing/snowing processes influenced by the coupling effect of multiple factors, such as topography, turbulence, solar radiation, temperature, humidity and
In Case You Were Wondering…if this current snow drought that we are in sets a record for longest period between snow events of 1 or more, read on.. Chicagos official snowfall records began with the winter of 1884-85. Over these 134 years, Chicagos longest spell without a snowfall of at least 1 inch occurred twice: 64 days from Dec. 3-Feb. 4, 1905-06, and Dec. 23-Feb. 24, 1953-54. On Dec. 17, Chicago recorded 1.7 inches of snow, the citys most recent snowfall of at least 1 inch. As of Feb. 16, that would be 61 days ago. Our streak must persist for at least one more week to have a chance at setting the record.. Lest you think that my interest in snow seems self-serving (after all I am one of the managers of the best snow removal company in Illinois), there are important benefits from regular winter snowfall that we all share.. The most obvious is the moisture. The following equation varies based on the density of the snow which is determined by the temperature, but generally, every ten ...
The main difference between the Briggs & Stratton 1696614 Dual-Stage Snowblower and the Snow Joe Blower earlier reviewed is that this is a two-stage model. The design features an auger that scoops up the snow and a fan that sends the snow to a chute that throws it farther away.. Unlike the single-stage Snow Joe SJ625E Snow Thrower, the Briggs & Stratton 1696614 Dual-Stage Snowblower can be used on unpaved surfaces. It doesnt make contact with the ground.. The Briggs & Stratton S1024 runs on a 950 Snow Series 208-cc Engine that delivers 9.50 foot-pounds of torque. You might find this to be just the right amount of power needed to eat through your mounds of snow.. Its not a surprise that Briggs & Stratton 1696614 Dual-Stage Snow Thrower is a powerful snowblower. It is a gas model that might offer you dependability where electric models cannot make a dent. Thats especially the case when you have hardened snow mountains in your yard.. Its clearing path is 24 inches wide, and the auger can dig ...

Snowfall totals of 15 inches at Wilmington, NC and 13.3 inches at Cape Hatteras, NC were all-time records for those locations. The final snow depth at Cape Hatteras does not account for about five inches of snow that melted when the snow changed briefly to rain on the 23rd. Along the northern coast, snow amounts ranged from 10 inches at Manteo to one inch at the Virginia border. Gusty winds piled snow drifts four to eight feet high all along the coast. Many towns were paralyzed. The snow shattered many snow records for the coastal areas (Figure 1). Gale force winds whipped the heavy snow into drifts up to 8 feet high.. Elsewhere, two inches of snow fell at Savannah, GA; one of only three times that snowfall in the city required a ruler for measurement. Charleston, SC picked up 3.9 inches. The storm resulted in the first white Christmas on record from northeastern Florida to North Carolina. Snow fell in Tampa and Daytona Beach as Florida experienced its most widespread snowstorm in history and ...
Howard County, situated between Baltimore and Washington, was already working on an all-remote model. Although the system cancelled meal service, athletics, and all community-sponsored programming in school buildings, which were closed, the virtual instruction continued as scheduled Wednesday.. Baltimore City Public Schools also announced the cancellation of in-person classes Wednesday but continued with virtual instruction.. The shift in Maryland toward virtual learning during inclement weather mirrors what is becoming a national trend. As of Thanksgiving, only about 1 in 5 school districts across the nation said they were keeping snow days; the pandemic had seen more than half that are located in an area where snow days are a possibility either cancelling the whole idea of a snow day or seriously considering the change.. ...
Interdisciplinary research efforts to integrate the physical aspects of snow cover with chemical and biological systems provide a new perspective on problems related to snow hydrology. The integration and distribution of these systems over different spatial and temporal scales was the focus of a conference last fall on snow hydrology and many presentations and discussions looked at the progress made over the past 20 years since the 1978 conference, Modeling of Snow Cover Runoff. With improvement in measurement techniques, computing capabilities, and remote data transmission, we now use more sophisticated and efficient point scale models of the physical processes of snow metamorphism and melting. An increased awareness exists of the importance of preferential flow processes (fingering), of the formation of ice layers in the snowpack, and of how these processes change over time and influence the snow chemistry and subniveal environment. Considerable understanding now exists at the catchment ...
An early spring snow storm blasted Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ontario on April 2 and April 3, 2005. As much as 22 inches of snow fell in parts of Ohio, and though totals were significantly smaller in Cleveland, the storm still dumped enough snow on the city to make the winter of 2004-2005 the snowiest on record. Cleveland receives on average 63 inches of snow in the winter. In the winter 2004-2005, the snowfall total hit 105.5 inches. The storm knocked out power through much of northeastern Ohio and threw parts of the region into a state of emergency. The snow is expected to melt quickly, which could add to flooding problems along rivers in Pennsylvania.. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite captured this image of the snow-bound region on April 4, 2005. The photo-like image shows lake-effect snow on the south and east side of the Great Lakes. Snow falls in these regions when cold air passes over the lakes, picking up moisture that freezes into ...
Im looking out of my office window to beautiful blue skies reflecting on the snow covered trees and 10 inches of new snow. Storm number 2 is expected tonight with another 12 inches or so of snow. And the big storm gets here on Thursday. 2-4 feet of snow are expected with that one. Preschool is canceled and my wife and I will take turns working and playing until school is back in session (my guess is it wont be until next week). So, its a snow day and Ill need to get some work done, so itll probably be quite around here until next week. Enjoy! ...
Abstract. The deposition of light-absorbing aerosols (LAAs), such as black carbon (BC) and dust, onto snow cover has been suggested to reduce the snow albedo and modulate the snowpack and consequent hydrologic cycle. In this study we use the variable-resolution Community Earth System Model (VR-CESM) with a regionally refined high-resolution (0.125°) grid to quantify the impacts of LAAs in snow in the Rocky Mountain region during the period 1981-2005. We first evaluate the model simulation of LAA concentrations both near the surface and in snow and then investigate the snowpack and runoff changes induced by LAAs in snow. The model simulates similar magnitudes of near-surface atmospheric dust concentrations as observations in the Rocky Mountain region. Although the model underestimates near-surface atmospheric BC concentrations, the model overestimates BC-in-snow concentrations by 35 % on average. The regional mean surface radiative effect (SRE) due to LAAs in snow reaches up to 0.6-1.7 W m−2 ...
While some people may worship sun, sand, and beaches, youd trade all of that away in exchange for a day on the slopes. Winters your season - the snow is fresh, theres always a mug of hot cocoa to enjoy, and theres nothing better than cozying up in a warm sweater.. Before you start making the most of winter, however, its important to be aware of one of the biggest dangers to your eyesight this winter…Snow blindness.. What is Snow Blindness?. Snow blindness - also known as photokeratits - is a painful, potentially severe eye condition that occurs when your eyes come into contact with UV rays. The reason why this condition became known as snow blindness is because UV rays bounce off the surface of snow, thus increasing the strength of the UV rays. When these rays hit your eyes, they burn the surface layer of the cornea.. Snow blindness can also refer to what happens when your eyes are exposed to too much cold, dry air. The corneas surface can freeze when in contact with cold, dry air for ...

December 13, 2013, 4:28 a.m.. Nearly three feet of snow closed roads in and out of Jerusalem, which is set in high hills, and thousands in and around the city were left without power. Israeli soldiers and police rescued hundreds trapped in their cars by snow and ice. In the West Bank, the branches of olive trees groaned under the weight of snow.. In Cairo, where local news reports said the last recorded snowfall was more than 100 years ago, children in outlying districts capered in white-covered streets, and adults marveled at the sight, tweeting pictures of snow-dusted parks and squares. In other parts of the city, rain and hail rocketed down.. On social media, some joked that the snowfall was the mystical work of Gen. Abdel Fattah Sisi, the military strongman who is the focus of something of a cult of personality among his followers. Sisi led the coup five months ago against the highly unpopular but democratically elected Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi.. Storm-driven waves lashed Egypts ...
I live and work in one of the snowiest cities in the United States. Rochester N.Y. is situated between Buffalo and Syracuse and it is often a coin toss which city gets the most snow. Unfortunately, our snow is not the kind of snow that graces the covers of Christmas cards, but is a crystalline mess called lake effect snow. This type of snow is created when very cold air travels across the warm waters of the great lakes and picks up moisture. The moisture is then dumped as snow over the land. This type of snow is very quickly growing, so large nice crystals just do not have time to form. We are lucky if we get three snowfalls a season that contain large fern like crystals. On average, Rochester gets about 92 inches of snow a year.. In the world of the study of snow an individual single crystal is called a snow crystal, when groups of crystals are called snowflakes.. The technique for photographing a single snow crystal is a bit difficult. I keep a snow shed in my backyard that keeps the ...

Partial sublimation is perhaps a factor in this equation. Sublimation is the process of conversion from a solid directly to a gas, such as what occurs with dry ice. There is a great deal we still do not know and can not know about the composition of this snow, but it would stand to reason that certain chemical constituents in artificially nucleated snow could cause the behavior being observed. Some have reported a more usual melting phenomenon from older samples of this snow. It is also possible that some of the chemical elements in this snow lose their potency over time. Again, there is much we can not know. What is certain from numerous lab tests already taken is that much, if not most, if not all of the snow now falling is toxic. It is also certain that we are now seeing snow fall regularly at temperatures far above freezing. There is also no denying the fact that engineered snow storms are a reality as the links below this article confirm ...

Snow it did. I woke up to a winter wonderland with a hush that comes as gentle as a lullaby, a blanket of white that matched the sky. At first I thought No brocante and went back to bed. But soon after I saw on the internet that there wasnt snow over yonder by the brocante. That news made it easy to get up and get going. I went to my closet to find warm clothes, and instead layered four sweaters and leggings pants and socks... warm was a need be. Going was easy, hopefully the return trip will be the same. My niece Marie snapped after I sent her a photo of the snowfall, she said, I like to be outside in the snow for about ten minutes, and then I love being inside watching it snow. Wet, cold, snow, slippery mess... inside please. When we arrived at the brocante it was as true as the news listed, no snow to be found! A brocante in its place. Happy me. But it was FREEZING!
A few weeks ago we had a snow day in St. Louis. In one day, we got less than 2 whole inches of snow (!!), and basically the entire city shut down. The highways were like ice rinks, there were hundreds of wrecks, schools were closed, weather alerts were issued and everything was cancelled. I dont know if St. Louis was unprepared for the snow or if they were just lazy (or cheap) and didnt want to get out and deal with the ice, but things were a mess. Luckily, this all happened on a day I was working from home, waiting for some of our nursery furniture to be delivered. As I sat at my computer, in my pajamas, sipping my hot cup of decaf, I got about six million emails from our secretaries freaking out about the ice. Does that happen at your work too? Not a single email from a lawyer (who were all probably already at the office working when the snow started). Maybe thats the difference? Either way, its weird ...

Westerly driven, long-range transportation of dust particles in elevated aerosol layers (EALs) is a persistent phenomenon during spring and summer over the Indian subcontinent. During the snow accumulation season, EALs transport substantial amounts of dust to the snow-covered slopes of high-mountain Asia (HMA). Here we use multiple satellite-based estimates to demonstrate a robust physical association between the EALs and dust-induced snow darkening over HMA. Results from a fully coupled atmosphere-chemistry-snow model support these observations, revealing across HMA a signature of increasing dust-induced snow darkening with surface elevation that peaks near 4,500 m. Moreover, the influence of dust on snow darkening is greater than that of black carbon above 4,000 m. Our findings suggest a discernible role of dust in the observed spatial heterogeneity of snowmelt and snowline trends over HMA and highlight an increasing contribution of dust to snowmelt as the snowline rises with warming. Dust deposition

Simulations by global terrestrial biogeochemical models (TBMs) consistently underestimate the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) at high latitude monitoring stations during the nongrowing season. We hypothesized that heterotrophic respiration is underestimated during the nongrowing season primarily because TBMs do not generally consider the insulative effects of snowpack on soil temperature. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared the performance of baseline and modified versions of three TBMs in simulating the seasonal cycle of atmospheric CO2 at high latitude CO2 monitoring stations; the modified version maintained soil temperature at 0 ??C when modeled snowpack was present. The three TBMs include the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA), Century, and the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM). In comparison with the baseline simulation of each model, the snowpack simulations caused higher releases of CO2 between November and March and greater uptake of CO2 between June and August for
Additional assumptions for the calculation of αsn_TARTES were that impurities were negligible, that SSA and density were correlated and that conditions were 100% overcast. The impurity assumption may seem unlikely as waste burning around Umiujaq provides a source for soot and strong winds could transport mineral dust to the snow. However, if there was an impact of those impurities it was probably included in the coefficient A and the correct determination of quantity and type of impurities would require to sample and analyze the snow or to use vertical absorption profiles (Tuzet et al. 2019), which was beyond the scope of this paper. That SSA and snow density were correlated was shown by an empirical dataset of simultaneously measured density and SSA values (Fig. 2) and has in general been observed elsewhere (Domine et al. 2007). Although the measured density values had relatively large standard deviations, which introduces an uncertainty to the calculated snow density, the impact on snow ...

Snow leopards are smaller than the other big cats but like them, exhibit a range of sizes, generally weighing between 27 and 54 kilograms (60 and 120 lb). Body length ranges from 75 to 130 centimetres (30 to 50 in), with a tail of nearly the same length.[3]. Snow leopards have long thick fur, the base colour of which varies from smoky grey to yellowish tan, with whitish underparts. They have dark grey to black open rosettes on their body with small spots of the same colour on their heads and larger spots on their legs and tail.[3]. Snow leopards show several adaptations for living in a cold mountainous environment. Their bodies are stocky, their fur is thick, and their ears are small and rounded, all of which help to minimize heat loss. Their feet are wide, which distributes their weight better for walking on snow, and they have fur on their undersides to increase their traction on steep and unstable surfaces, as well as to assist with minimising heat loss. Snow leopards tails are long and ...

Snowpack forms from layers of snow that accumulate in geographic regions and high altitudes where the climate includes cold weather for extended periods during the year. Snowpacks are an important water resource that feed streams and rivers as they melt. Therefore, snowpacks are both the drinking water source for many communities and a potential source of flooding (in case of sudden melting). Snowpacks also contribute mass to glaciers in their accumulation zone. Assessing the formation and stability of snowpacks is important in the study and prediction of avalanches.[1][2] Scientists study the physical properties of snow under different conditions and their evolution, and more specifically snow metamorphism,[3][4] snow hydrology (that is, the contribution of snow melt to catchment hydrology), the evolution of snow cover with climate change and its effect on the ice-albedo feedback and hydrology, both on the ground and by using remote sensing.[5] Snow is also studied in a more global context of ...

Hydroxy fatty acids (FAs) in fresh snow from Sapporo, one of the heaviest snowfall regions in the world, have been studied to ascertain the airborne bacterial endotoxin concentrations and their biomass. The presence of beta-hydroxy FAs (C-9-C-28), constituents of the Gram-negative bacterium (GNB), suggests long-range transport of soil microbes. Likewise, the occurrence of alpha- and omega-hydroxy FAs (C-9-C-30 and C-9-C-28, respectively) in snow reveals their contribution from epicuticular waxes and soil microorganisms. Estimated endotoxin and GNB mass can aid in assessing their possible impacts on the diversity and functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as lethal effects on pedestrians through dispersal of microbes. Air mass back trajectories together with hydroxy FAs reveal their sources from Siberia, the Russian Far East and northern China by the Asian monsoon. This study highlights the role of fresh snow that reduces the human health risk of GNB and endotoxin by the ...

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory from noon to midnight today with two to four inches of snow expected in Douglas County.. Though there is a slight chance for snow this morning and afternoon, Scott Whitmore of the National Weather Service in Topeka expects the heavier snowfall to occur from 3 to 8 p.m. today. Windy conditions - gusts of 30 mph are possible - will blow snow and create snowdrifts, Whitmore said.. Whitmore said wind chills are expected to dip again, dropping to about 12 degrees below zero by Thursday morning and continuing into Friday morning. Light snow is possible over the weekend, and Whitmore said another surge of arctic air is expected Sunday into Monday, with wind chills of 15 below zero possible.. It could be the coldest shot of arctic air so far this winter, Whitmore said. Highs will be around 9 on Monday, he said.. Copyright 2018 The Lawrence Journal-World. All rights reserved. Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com. It snows on Mars, but it´s a little alien to what you see in places like Vail, Colorado here on Earth. The snow is actually made up of frozen crystals of carbon dioxide about the size of red blood cells, according to new research.. Most of Mars atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide (CO2), so during the winter months the poles get so cold that gas condenses and forms tiny particles of snow.. MIT researchers decided to use science to calculate the size of the snow particles in the clouds and at the Martian poles.. The group determined the snow particles in the south are slightly smaller than those found up in the north pole, but they are both about as small as a red blood cell.. The team didnt use some humungous microscope to reach their findings, but instead analyzed data like temperature and pressure profiles taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) every 30 seconds over the course of five Martian years.. The MIT scientists also analyzed the data from the ...

Anthropogenic plutonium (Pu) in the environment is a result of atmospheric nuclear testing during the second half of the 20th century. In this work, we analyzed a 4-meter deep Antarctic Plateau snowpack characterized by a lowsnowaccumulation rate and negligible snowimpurities. These sample conditions enabled us to measure the snowpack Pu fallout by applying inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry to a few mL of snow melt without purification or preconcentration. Pu concentrations in the reconstructed Pu fallout record for the period after 1956 CE increased and decreased in agreement with past atmospheric nuclear testing. Two peaks and two dips associable with historical events were observed, and the highest peak in 1964(±1) CE approximately coincided with the maximum concentration of non-sea-salt sulfate caused by the Mt. Agung eruption in 1963 CE. Enhanced Pu fallout in the 1970s was attributed the geographical proximity of the Southern Hemispheric nuclear test sites. Our ...

Just like drivers sometimes use snow to clean their car mirrors in winter, two Exelis Inc. engineers are practicing snow cleaning on a test telescope mirror for the James Webb Space Telescope at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. By shooting carbon dioxide snow at the surface, engineers are able to clean large telescope mirrors without scratching them. The snow-like crystals (carbon dioxide snow) knock contaminate particulates and molecules off the mirror, said Lee Feinberg, NASA optical telescope element manager. This technique will only be used if the James Webb Space Telescopes mirror is contaminated during integration and testing.. The Webb telescope is the scientific successor to NASAs Hubble Space Telescope. It will be the most powerful space telescope ever built. With a mirror seven times as large as Hubbles and infrared capability, Webb will be capturing light from 13.5 billion light years away. To do this, its mirror must be kept super clean.. Small dust ...
