In the following we describe the methodological details of appetitive associative olfactory learning in Drosophila larvae. The setup, in combination with genetic interference, provides a handle to analyze the neuronal and molecular fundamentals of specifically associative learning in a simple larval brain.,br /,Organisms can use past experience to adjust present behavior. Such acquisition of behavioral potential can be defined as learning, and the physical bases of these potentials as memory traces. Neuroscientists try to understand how these processes are organized in terms of molecular and neuronal changes in the brain by using a variety of methods in model organisms ranging from insects to vertebrates. For such endeavors it is helpful to use model systems that are simple and experimentally accessible. The Drosophila larva has turned out to satisfy these demands based on the availability of robust behavioral assays, the existence of a variety of transgenic techniques and the elementary ...
SMELL. smel (Hebrew and Aramaic reach, as noun, "savor," "scent"; ruach, as verb, literally, "to breathe," "to inhale," thence "to smell"; osme, the "smell," "savor," euodia, "sweet smell" "fragrance" osphresis "the sense of smell"; verb osphrainomai): And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled (way-yarach) the smell (reach) of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See , the smell (reach) of my son is as the smell (reach) of a field which Yahweh hath blessed" (Genesis 27:27). Idols are described as "gods, the work of mens hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell" (Deuteronomy 4:28). Acceptable sacrifices and pious conduct are called a "sweet smell" or "savor" (Exodus 29:18 Ephesians 5:2 Philippians 4:18) well-pleasing to God. The godless life, which dishonors God, is hateful to Him: "I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors" (Leviticus 26:31). The phrase, "being in bad odor with a person," can be traced to Biblical language: "Ye have made our savor to ...

PNAS, 22 February, 2019, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1812342116. Suppression of GABAergic neurons through D2-like receptor secures efficient conditioning in Drosophila aversive olfactory learning. Mingmin Zhou, Nannan Chen, Jingsong Tian, Jianzhi Zeng, Yunpeng Zhang, Xiaofan Zhang, Jing Guo, Jinghan Sun, Yulong Li, Aike Guo, and Yan Li. Abstract. The GABAergic system serves as a vital negative modulator in cognitive functions, such as learning and memory, while the mechanisms governing this inhibitory system remain to be elucidated. In Drosophila, the GABAergic anterior paired lateral (APL) neurons mediate a negative feedback essential for odor discrimination; however, their activity is suppressed by learning via unknown mechanisms. In aversive olfactory learning, a group of dopaminergic (DA) neurons is activated on electric shock (ES) and modulates the Kenyon cells (KCs) in the mushroom body, the center of olfactory learning. Here we find that the same group of DA neurons also form ...
It wasnt until several years had passed after I moved out of my parents home that I could finally smell their house smell. All the years that I lived there I never knew the smell of my own house. This of course does not take into account the obvious years that we had a cat. This past summer I think I figured out the mystery of being able to smell your own house. We were away for about a month with no one staying at our house during this time. When we arrived back home there was no food or people smell to interfere with the true house smell. For once I was able to experience my house odor as if I was a stranger visiting for the first time. Overall I would say my house smelled pleasant but a bit stale, presumably from having the windows shut for so long. I was happy to know that my house didnt have any funk smell to it like some houses I have been in before ...

But what about smells? Digital images are essentially throwaway items, so could an aroma better capture a mood or event?. London, UK-based designer Amy Radcliffe thinks so. Thats why she created the Madeline, a device that holds onto smells.. The idea: Sniffing stored odors at a later date will bring important memories flooding back in a way Facebook photos just cant match.. The Madeline is a strange-looking device, but its by no means new. In fact, scientists in the fragrance industry have been using technology like it for years.. In order to capture a smell, an object is placed inside a glass dome connected by an air hose to an odor trap. Recording a smell isnt an instantaneous process; it can take hours or even days to properly capture the aroma of a chosen item.. (That makes me wonder if youre capturing the moment associated with the smell or just the memory of the smell storage process.). Its a very delicate process, but thats the intention.. "Your odor memories are very fragile; if ...
Olfaction is a chemoreception that forms the sense of smell. Olfaction has many purposes, such as the detection of hazards, pheromones, and food. It integrates with other senses to form the sense of flavor. Olfaction occurs when odorants bind to specific sites on olfactory receptors located in the nasal cavity. Glomeruli aggregate signals from these receptors and transmit them to the olfactory bulb, where the sensory input will start to interact with parts of the brain responsible for smell identification, memory, and emotion. Often, land organisms will have separate olfaction systems for smell and taste (orthonasal smell and retronasal smell), but water-dwelling organisms usually have only one system. In vertebrates, smells are sensed by olfactory sensory neurons in the olfactory epithelium. The olfactory epithelium is made up of at least six morphologically and biochemically different cell types. The proportion of olfactory epithelium compared to respiratory epithelium (not innervated, or ...

Jay, 25, a musician in Seattle, Washington. Thinks it smells like: "Sweat, urine, and human nature.". "My first memory of the smell of pussy is the first time my high school girlfriend was grinding against my thigh with nothing but panties on. We made out and fooled around, but kept all the touching above underwear. The thing was, her panties were super thin, and she got super wet.. I didnt notice until I got home that night that there was a white crust on the thigh of my jeans. When I smelled it, it smelled amazing. I dont even know what drove me to smell it, but once I had, I couldnt stop. Its tough to describe it, because it smells so uniquely like what it is. Its a little like fresh sweat after a womans done exercising, but theres always more to it. I hid those jeans by the side of my bed and would smell them and masturbate every night for like a week straight!. Years later, I finally told a woman how much I loved her smell. I wish I had the self confidence I have now when I was a bit ...

Sense smell taste - I havent been able to smell or taste for 2 weeks. I thought it was a cold but usually I only lose my sense of smell/taste for a few days. Why? Acute neuropathy. I have seen this before. In the absence of head injury, it is somewhat of a mystery. I had one patient lose her smell and taste after a flu vaccine. I think it is due to a neuropathy or acute nerve disease of the olfactory nerve, the nerve that delivers smell, which would also affect taste. I always give a trial of steroids.
Cat urine is just like other pets urine as it can gives a very bad smell nearly impossible to mask off. It can happens quite often that your cat urinates outside the litter box and on a carpet, bed linens, clothes or furniture. It is very important to remove the urine smell to prevent your cat from repeating the same mistake again on the same spot. As you know, pets tend to return to the same spot which they previously urinated if the odor is still there. Moreover, if the problem is not being taken care off, the urine left unclean will gives out a strong ammonia smell and eventually causes more bacteria growth. Many of you, cat owners are not quick enough to clean up the urine. Thus, once the urine dries up, you might not see it on the floor but the smell cannot be avoided. Luckily, there are a few items from your house that are able to neutralize the cat urine smell like vinegar, baking soda and enzymatic cleaners. Vinegar is said to be one of the easiest and most useful product when it comes ...
These chemicals are contained in the natural substances the body releases, like sweat, Vaginal fluid or Semen. Thus most smells are not associated with any Infections.. If someones personal hygiene is not taken care of, then these substances build up, and the smells get stronger. Washing daily, and giving particular care to areas where substances could build up (for example under the foreskin of an uncircumcised man or boy, or the Vaginal area of a woman or girl) will mean any mild smells are meant to be there and should not become unpleasant.. Some infections also cause the release of other substances from the body. These substances can have distinctive and sometimes unpleasant smells that go with them. It might be that an unusual Discharge carries a particular smell, or is an unusual colour, and this could be a clue to the presence of an infection. (An example of this is bacterial vaginosis.) This website contains details of several sexually-transmitted infections and non sexually-transmitted ...
Portland is arranged in neighborhoods everywhere but in the very center of the city, and so much of my commute to and from work is through neighborhoods of houses, and in the autumn, I love to smell the smoke from peoples fires coming from the chimneys, the smells of things cooking in their kitchens - of course the rain and the leaves and the trees all have particularly earthy smells in the autumn. Fog and mist have distinctive smells as well. The cold, crisp air of autumn and winter does heighten the smells, I think ...

Parosmia (a distorted sense of smell) is marked by the perception of certain smells as unpleasant (such as chemicals, burning, or mold) or different upon each new inhalation.. This disorder is often caused by traumatic brain injuries because they can inflict damage on the olfactory bulb, which is a structure in the brain that gives it information about perceived scents.. A bacterial or viral infection can also cause parosmia because upper respiratory infections can inflict damage on olfactory neurons.. Progressive brain disorders such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease are marked by the formation of beta-amyloid plaques in the olfactory and central nervous systems and can lead to a distorted sense of smell as well.. You smell things that arent ...
Illustration of the anatomy of smell. The perception of smell starts in the lining (mucosa) of the nose, where tiny hair-like receptor nerve cells detect airborne chemicals. Activated receptor cells transmit messages to the olfactory bulb, just above the nasal cavity. The olfactory bulb is a swelling on the end of the olfactory nerve which carries the sensory impulses to the brains smell centres. These olfactory centres lie brains frontal lobe and limbic system, which interpret the impulses to produce the sensation of smell. - Stock Image C027/6959
November 06, 2014. By Dorothy Rowley. Special to the NNPA from The Washington Informer. Older adults whove lost their sense of smell - namely, the ability to pick up on strong odors like smelly socks or bacon sizzling in a pan - could be at an increased risk of death within five years, according to a study involving more than 3,000 people ages 57 to 85.. The study, which published recently in the science journal PLOS ONE, revealed in a smell test conducted in 2005, that nearly 40 percent of subjects who failed died within five years, compared to a 19 percent death rate within five years for those with moderate smell loss. Ten percent of the test subjects were determined to have a healthy sense of smell.. During the test, "Sniffin Sticks," which resemble felt-tip pens, were loaded with five different scents - peppermint, fish, orange, rose or leather - that subjects were asked to identify.. Nearly 78 percent of those tested who were able to identify at least four of the five scents, were ...
Every pet owner has to deal with the occasional indoor "accident" whether it is before a young pet is properly housetrained, consequences of an illness, the aging of a pet or just an overly excited or stressed pet that may have less control. What no pet owner has to deal with, however, is the ongoing smell from urine accidents. With the proper steps, it is easy to control odors and eliminate pet urine smell entirely.. 12 Easy Ways to Eliminate Pet Urine Smells. Depending on a pets diet, health and the frequency of accidents, urine smells can become quite overpowering. Fortunately, there are easy ways to eliminate those odors… ...
The Secret of Scent. Author Luca Turin (here he is on TED) breaks down scent chemistry for the reader in fairly simple terms. For me, one of the upshots is that there are no smell-alikes in nature. The same compounds always cause the same aromas. Its possible for things to smell close to one another, or to create scent illusions where a set of compounds combines and sort of evokes or mimics another compound, but it can never be exactly alike - because the only thing that would smell exactly like a given smell is the molecule responsible for it. And so if you smell something, a molecule in the aroma is causing it. If you notice a similarity, some similarity is really there - even if, culturally, people perceive the two things as pleasant or unpleasant ...

Some of the most common medications used by Americans cause zinc deficiency, including: the blood pressure medicines, called ACE inhibitors; loop diuretics used to treat cardiovascular problems; cholestyramine, which binds to bile acids and lowers cholesterol; oral contraceptives; stomach acid reducers, called H-2 receptor antagonists; and estrogen and hormone replacement therapies.* In the US, ACE inhibitors alone account for 130 million prescriptions annually. Diuretics are third most commonly used type of medicine in people over age 60.**. What are the risks of losing the sense of smell? MayoClinic.com says that anosmia isnt dangerous in and of itself, "but an intact sense of smell is necessary to fully taste foods. So loss of smell could cause you to lose interest in eating, leading to weight loss, malnutrition or even depression. Loss of smell also prevents you from smelling things like spoiled food or smoke.". Ive already encountered that problem on my smellcation, evoking the "when in ...
One thing thats obvious about cannabis is that it has a strong smell. Actually, it can have lots of different smells: skunk, berries, pine, fuel, lemon, black licorice, Girl Scout cookies…Those smells come from terpenes that are Generally Recognized As Safe, because theyre found in things we eat all the time, like pepper. The wide variety of smells means that plants can differ a lot in terpene content. Some of these terpenes are arousing. Some are relaxing. Some reduce pain and inflammation. Some may have anti-addictive properties (selective CB2 agonists). That is to say, its actually true that different strains of marijuana are better suited for different uses, or different times of day.. Common use of "sativa" for stimulating and "indica" for sedating is apparently wrong, though.. ...

The olfactory membranes in your nose are densely packed with smell receptors. These receptors come in some 400 different subtypes; complex odors like that of rose petals can waft around 175 distinct kinds of odor molecules in the direction of your nose. In other words, the number of discrete odors we can perceive runs to the tens of thousands. No wonder scientists had thought that the whole smell arrangement was basically random. But research by Prof. Noam Sobel and his team in the Weizmann Neurobiology Department is bringing our noses into line with our other sensory organs. The arrangement of the photoreceptors in our eyes, for instance, is set up to relay spatial information to the brain. And the membranes in our inner ears are graded by tone.. Sobel provided one piece of the puzzle several years ago when he revealed that odors can be placed on a scale that runs from sweetly pleasant to highly disagreeable. His research linked the apparently subjective - how volunteers rated a smell - to the ...
redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports - Your Universe Online. Individuals who were not born with an olfactory sense, or who lost the ability to smell due to a disease, could someday once again take in the sweet smells all around them courtesy of new research from the University of Michigan Medical School.. Dr. Jeffery Martens, an associate professor of pharmacology, and colleagues were, for the first time, able to cure the condition, known as congenital anosmia, and restore the sense of smell in mice using gene therapy, the university said in a September 2 statement. They discovered that the mice were lacking in a protein known as IFT88, which led to a lack of cilia -- the hair-shaped structures on the surface of a cell -- throughout the body.. "The researchers were able to insert normal IFT88 genes into the cells of the mice by giving them a common cold virus loaded with the normal DNA sequence, and allowing the virus to infect them and insert the DNA into the mouses own cells," according to the ...
Smells, or odors, are caused by tiny particles called molecules, which are constantly emitted by the many different substances around us. These odor molecules spread rapidly, in the form of gases and vapors.. You smell by means of a special group of nerve cells located in the back of your nose. When you sniff, a flower, its vapors stimulate the smell nerves in your nose. The nerve cells send a message to the brain, and the brain recognizes the fragrance. If you hold your nose, odors cant reach the sense-of-smell nerve cells.. The nose allows you to make scents of whats going on in the world around you, the nose lets you figure out whats happening by smelling. It does this with help from many parts hidden deep inside your nasal cavity and head.. Up on the roof of the nasal cavity is the olfactory epithelium which contains special receptors that are sensitive to odor molecules that travel through the air. These receptors are very small - there are about 10 million of them in your nose!. There ...

From Plato to Pinker there has been the common belief that the experience of a smell is impossible to put into words. Decades of studies have confirmed this observation. But the studies to date have focused on participants from urbanized Western societies. Cross-cultural research suggests that there may be other cultures where odors play a larger role. The Jahai of the Malay Peninsula are one such group. We tested whether Jahai speakers could name smells as easily as colors in comparison to a matched English group. Using a free naming task we show on three different measures that Jahai speakers find it as easy to name odors as colors, whereas English speakers struggle with odor naming. Our findings show that the long-held assumption that people are bad at naming smells is not universally true. Odors are expressible in language, as long as you speak the right language ...
While humans acclimatise to smell dogs can register the same smell for hours, days and sometimes weeks later.. I know that after I spray cologne on the 2nd dog of the day that I wont be able to smell it again until the next day unless I change fragrances.. Our fur kids sense of smell is amazing. I know if I have a late finish and am seeing a client and canine out to their car, I immediately pick up the dinner time smells (purely because Im hungry). I start recognising the smell of a barbecue or a roast etc.. The dogs however can tell you exactly what meat is being cooked, what vegetables are on and each herb and spice is being used etc. They can really microscopically and then some hone in to what is being cooked!!!!. Weiss bred mice that lacked Nav1.7 in their olfactory neurons and discovered that, although the neurons still produced electrical signals in response to odours, they no longer transferred the signals to other neurons as they typically would.. The behaviour of these "knockout" mice also implied that they could not smell. Mice are generally intrigued by the aromas of potential mates and of food, but when the researchers presented the knockout mice with the scents of male and female urine, peanut butter and milk, they showed no interest. The mice were similarly unfazed when researchers exposed them to a chemical that foxes secrete from their anal glands which usually sends rodents scurrying in the opposite direction. When the researchers separated mother knockout mice from their pups, the smell-impaired mums failed to corral their offspring - a behaviour that probably relies on smell.. Co-author Frank Zufall, also of the University of Saarland, says the connection between smell and pain was ...
Jennifer Stamps recognised that the ability to smell is associated with the first cranial nerve or the olfactory nerve, which is basically responsible for our sense of smell.. And the first cranial nerve is, apparently, one of the first things to malfunction when a person s cognition is on the decline.. It struck Stamps, then, that if she asked people to smell a pure odorant something that is only detected by the olfactory nerve she could assess whether their cognitive abilities were hampered.. Why peanut butter? Because she wanted something so inexpensive and accessible that it removed one of the significant challenges of Alzheimer s research.. Stamps collaborated with a behavioural neurologist from University of Florida s College of Medicine to devise the test. In it, she asked subjects to close their eyes and mouth and block one nostril. She then opened a peanut butter container and held a ruler next to the subject s open nostril.. Moving the peanut butter up the ruler 1 centimetre at a time, ...
Senses Info. (cont.) Smell. Our sense of smell warns us of dangers, such as smoke or poisonous gases. It also helps us enjoy the flavors of our favorite food and drink. With our olfactory (another word for sense of smell) receptors, we are able to detect thousands of distinct smells. These receptors cover an area the size of a postage stamp at the roof of our nasal cavity, the hollow space inside your nose. Tiny hairs called nerve fibers dangle from these receptors, which are covered with a layer of mucus. When a smell, formed by chemicals in the air, dissolves in the mucus, the hairs absorb it and excite the proper olfactory receptors. Only a few molecules are needed to excite these sensitive receptors. Once they are stimulated, they transmit impulses to the brain. This pathway is directly connected to the limbic system, where the brain deals with emotions. Reactions to smells are rarely neutral - one usually either likes or dislikes a smell. Smells leave long lasting impressions and are ...

The olfactory sense, or the sense of smell, is the method in which the human body perceives its environment around it through its scent. Our sense of smell is substantially more sensitive than any of our other senses, and its ability to recognise scents is immediate. The mind relies on this recognition ability of our olfactory sense in order to recall memories. When dealing with a familiar scent, the brain immediately associates the scent with a past experience. Therefore, a persons qualia of a particular scent is largely dependant on the persons memories, as a person could associate a particular scent as pleasant while another person could associate the same scent as unpleasant. There are a lot of people who report problems with their sense of smell, about one to two percent of North Americans. This is more common in men than women, and more problems occur with the sense of smell as age increases, and in one study, nearly one-quarter of men ages 60-69 had a smell disorder, while about 11 ...
A research team of scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersey found out that the sense of smell gets much more active when you are scared. This way whatever smell you detect when feeling frightened gets imprinted in your memory so next time you sense the same kind of smell the fear will return. Experts explain this phenomena with the fact that the olfactory nerve, responsible for sending messages from the nostrils to the brain, is situated just next to the areas linked to emotional memory ...
Many would argue that the sense of smell is our far most important sense when it comes to evaluating wine. This is because the olfactory sense plays a fundamental role both in the perception of aroma and also flavour. Without it all wines,3 rather than just a few, would appear to be uninteresting alcoholic solutions of acid and sugar. The sense of smell is by far the most powerful of our senses. It can discriminate between tens of thousands of different aromas, and is capable of detecting some compounds found in wine at levels around a single part per trillion. An example of this is the compound 2,4,6 Trichloroanisole, the primary compound responsible for cork taint. Some people can detect it at around 1 part per trillion which is analogous to a single second in thirty two years. Not bad I suppose, but when you think that an Alsatian or Beagle probably sees a three dimensional colliedescope like scent world, our olfactory efforts seem pretty pathetic in comparison. The olfactory system ...

Next week there are couple of people coming to check out the room and I know for a fact 99% of em will be repulsed by the smell. Any ideas in order to get rid of the smell and potentially gain a roommate? (Also

Zinc is essential for many processes within the body, helping to carry signals between cells and keeping (in particular) our metabolism running smoothly by regulating insulin. An efficient engine means less exhaust. But by keeping your system balanced, zinc will also improve your overall smell-down to the odor of your sweat. Oddly enough, Zinc also helps improve our sense of smell and taste. So not only will you smell better, but youll smell better too.. less ...
I definitely do not think this is in my imagination. Ive noticed that my sense of smell is most sharp about half an hour after a wake up. Throughout the day, its fine, but at night I can barely smell anything. Sometimes I cannot make out the notes or even smell fragrances that I know have strong sillage. Ive had sinus problems in the past but I dont know if this is related. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this common? Does the nose get tired as the day wears on?

Researchers in Germany looked into the links between smells and peoples dreams. They exposed people who were asleep to the smells of rotten eggs or roses and then asked them about their dreams when they were woken up. Those who had been exposed to the pleasant smell were more likely to have had pleasant dreams, while those who had been exposed to the rotten eggs were more likely to have had unpleasant ones ...

Yeah, thats right. My boyfriend Murphy, his bro, and Brigittes crush, Duke and their Mom. I did not authorize this visit. Then I started thinking. What possible reason could they have for seeing Murphy without me. Then I remembered the unknown smells. They were not pug smells, but I definitely smelled dog. Dog and puppy. My brain was spinning out of control, I thought my head would explode. So, when they sat down on the couch, we just cut loose on them. Sniffing and licking, licking and sniffing. Until they finally told us. The reason all of these confusing smells were all over them was because of this ...

Some of my ideas came from her talk about the tactile feelings and smells she had when she was learning how to read Braille. I know these would be hard to draw, but I started thinking about my time in the military and the smells I missed from that time. You all are going to think the smells are weird, but so am I. I really miss the smell of the range after everyone has fired their rounds; I miss the smell of vehicles just sitting around before we head out to the field; I miss the smell of "Military" men. They had a distinctive smell. Mice engineered to lack a sense of smell lose weight on a high-fat diet, researchers report July 5 in the journal Cell Metabolism. The mice ate just as much as counterparts with unaltered senses, yet lost an average of about 16 percent of their body weight. The weight loss was almost entirely from fat. In addition, mice with an enhanced sense of smell gain more weight than mice with typical olfactory abilities despite similar diets.
BOSTON (December 4, 2017)-Researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine, led by Dr. James E. Schwob, are examining the behavior of adult stem cells within the context of aging and, specifically, the sense of smell. As part of the normal aging process, older adults frequently experience a decline in their olfactory function, resulting in a compromised or complete loss of sense of smell.
In this thesis lateralization of olfactory functions was investigated by both behavioral and electrophysiological assessment, the latter with the olfactory event-related potential (OERP) technique. The olfactory sense is primarily ipsilateral in that a stimulus that is presented to one nostril is initially processed in the same hemisphere. This makes it possible to observe differences between stimulated nostrils as an indication of hemispheric difference. Study I explored differences in olfactory cognitive functions with respect to side of rhinal stimulation and demonstrated that familiarity ratings are higher at right- compared to left-nostril stimulation. No differences were found in episodic recognition memory or free identification, possibly reflecting inter-hemispheric interactions in higher cognitive functions. Effects of repetition priming were present in odor identification and tended to be more pronounced when tested via left nostril. Study II further investigated the effect of previous ...
This study shows that the formation of a transcription-dependent LTM is accompanied by a specific, stable, increase in the density of microglomeruli in the insect MB. Changes in the microglomerular organization of MB lips were observed as a function of rearing temperature (Groh et al., 2004), age (Groh et al., 2006; Krofczik et al., 2008) or behavioral experience (Krofczik et al., 2008). However, we show for the first time that microglomerular organization can be modified by the formation of an odor-reward memory. Plasticity was modality-specific, as only olfactory (lips) but not visual areas (collars) were affected. Such a plasticity cannot be simply explained by differences in sensory experience per se. Indeed, MG density differed between animals sharing the same olfactory experience (paired and unpaired) while it was not affected by variations in olfactory input (the unpaired and naive groups show similar MG density values). Rather, the effect was only observed after associative olfactory ...

Turned out, Dell confirmed the smell is real (but not really urine).. Further, a Reddit post explains more. The palm rest is the origin of the smell. It was suggested the polymer in the plastic emitted a smell similar to cat urine.. The bad smell from the back of the mouth can be either because of the decayed tooth or because of the deposit on the back of the teeth. This area is normally can not be properly cleaned as it is difficult to reach that area. So when the tongue is put in that area bad odour is there. There is another poossibility that some decay is there which is causing the food impaction and hence the bad smell. It is usually considered that the sense of smell is poorly developed in humans, in comparison, for example, to lower vertebrates, such as rats and mice. However, in view of its evolutionary significance, it seems very unlikely that the sense of smell is trivial in guiding human behavior.. The fragility of the fibers in the olfactory mucosa of the nose, their delicate passage through the cribriform plate, and the course of the olfactory tract along the orbital surface of the brain underly the vulnerability of this sensory modality to external trauma-for example, from head injury. This is compounded by the locations of structures receiving the central representations of smell, such as, for example, the primary olfactory cortex and olfactory tubercle, which lie vulnerable on the undersurface of the brain overlying the anterior perforated space.. Smell sensations may occur as part of an aura in temporal lobe epilepsy. Traditionally referred to as uncinate seizures (simple partial seizures in todays ...
If a urine stain is still wet, you have a better chance of getting rid of a majority of the smell due to the fact that the ammonia in the urine has not crystallized yet. VetStreet.com, a popular site among dog and cat owners, writes. "If you have a urine spot on your carpet thats still wet, opt for eco-friendly white vinegar, which neutralizes odors due to its high acidity - and works well even if the stain or smell has been there for a while. Start by blotting the area, rather than rubbing it, which will only push the stain further into the carpeting fibers. Then mix equal parts white vinegar and cold water, and pour the mixture generously over the soiled section. Blot well, and then let it dry. (A fan can speed up the process.) Once dry, run a vacuum over the area.". If a urine stain is dry, be sure not to rub it with a wet paper towel as this will only make the stench harder to remove.. ...

I have been pumping for about 4 years now..and have always hated the ,way the Humalog insulin smells when I am doing a set change. Does ,anyone have any suggestions on how to clean the pump ( I have a MM ,507C) to get that icky smell out. I wish Lilly would copme out with ,a "scented" insulin...wouldnt that be beautiful! Thats kind of funny. My wife actually loves the smell of my insulin. With the pump, that smell is far less common than with shots. She used to like to smell me right after I would give a shot just to get the scent of the insulin. Personally, I think it smells like a band- aid...neither bad nor good. Im not sure I would want them to add a "scent" chemical to my insulin though! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------- for HELP or to subscribe/unsubscribe, contact: [email protected] send a DONATION http://www.Insulin-Pumpers.org/donate.shtml ...

Smell and taste are related to pleasure, and safety. As children explore smell and taste, they learn to articulate preferences, and take safety precautions.
Elmer Fudd might have been the only one not surprised that scientists can make mice smell a nice sharp cheddar by shining light into their noses. Actually, he might be disappointed after having to wait an extra 10 years: In "The Old Grey Hare", Fudd learned of "smellevision" from a newspaper in the year 2000.. But here in 2010, Venkatesh Murthy at Harvard led a team that replaced some of the chemical smell sensors in transgenic mouses noses with light receptors. So when a beam of light hits the mouses nose, the mouse will "smell" the light.. Why go to all the trouble? Light creates simplicity. Murthy wants to better understand how brains react to smell, and he wants to see precisely which parts of the brain "light up", or become active, when the mouse smells something. But the actual smells are too diffuse, and too complex, to be administered efficiently in a controlled setting.. Light can be controlled with much more precision. Murthy can fire a pulsing beam right up the mousey nose, ...
The initial impetus for the project came from a 2006 article in the New Scientist magazine featuring research being done at Florida State University. By targeted deletion of the Kv 1.3 channel gene super smelling mice with altered glomeruli were created. Their smell was enhanced by anything from 1000 - 10000 times in sensitivity. Humans have the same gene so the hypothetical question was could we enhance our own sense of smell in the same way ...

many browser tabs I keep jumping between that I dont remember where. *ahem* No idea if its true, but Ill go and assume its half-true: lots of hired boots with some regulars thrown in for various reasons. E.g. management/supervision or just the ability to say, "Were here" and its not all contractors when budgets and employees need to be justified. The downside is that you cant claim complete uninvolvement, which seems a weirdly popular excuse when investigatins start. Actually, that wasnt us who screwed everything up, it was the people we hired. We werent involved at all in doing our job and had absolutely no control and therefore should be off the hook. I rest my case.. I also wish the press/media adopted the tradition of calling some organisations by previous names when the links and parallels are so obvious. Blackwater has become such a household name that it would be a shame not to remind people of their sterling performance and reputation any time Academi (Formerly Blackwater) and ...

We recently purchased a new doggy shampoo, which for some reason is scented like boysenberries. Why? Ya, got me. I have never known a dog to smell like a boysenberry before. I suppose it smells better than, well, wet dog. Anyway, T was laying on the floor in front of Azure who was happily swinging and intermittently yanking on the links to make the swing light up and play music. I am not sure she realizes this is a cause and effect sort of thing yet, but she likes to hold things and to yank those things that she is holding (i.e.: my hair, my earring, Ts goatee, etc.) so the lights and music are actually just a bonus. I smiled down upon my husband and daughter who were making each other smile when T sniffed the air. T: "Girl! You smell like a brown dog!" Blue: "Does she smell like boysenberries?" T: "Nope", he replied, "That is NOT what I smell.". Blue: "Oh, you mean she smells like the dogs area out behind the garage?". T: "Uh, yeah. I think it is Mommy Time again.". There were 3 cabins on the property. Ours, the main cabin which housed a whole lot of people if need be and a tiny little cabin. I met one of the men running the area when I went down to have a shower. I explained that I could not get the fire going and he said he would come help me. We walked back up to the cabin and the second he opened the door he commented on the smell. The heavy smell of propane. I explained to him that we both felt extremely extremely ill and at that point it finally dawned on me and on him as well that we had carbon monoxide poisoning. We immediately gathered our belongings and headed outside. We were transferred to the smaller cabin. Upon further inspection the gas fridge had some fault to it and wasnt burning clean and we inhaled that ALL night. I can not begin to tell you how sick we felt. ...
