Owner/managers of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are an under-researched population in terms of psychological distress and the associated health and economic consequences. Using baseline data from the evaluation of the Business in Mind program, a mental health promotion intervention amongst SME owner/managers, this study investigated: (i) prevalence of high/very high psychological distress, past-month sickness absenteeism and presenteeism days in SME owner/managers; (ii) associated, self-reported lost productivity; and (iii) associations between work, non-work and business-specific factors and work attendance behaviours. In our sample of 217 SME owner/managers 36.8% reported high/very high psychological distress. Of this group 38.7% reported past-month absenteeism, 82.5% reported past-month presenteeism, and those reporting presenteeism were 50% less productive as than usual. Negative binomial regression was used to demonstrate the independent effects of socio-demographic, work-related wellbeing

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of participation in physical fitness programs on the self-perceived level of job performance of Oregon public university employees. A volunteer sample of 344 fulltime public university employees responded to the specifically designed questionnaire. The backbone of America is found in her wealth of small business owners. With all the current red tape, America is still one of the easiest countries in the world in which to begin a new business. All that is needed to start a business in the United States is a workable concept, some financial backing, and a well designed website, preferably one that incorporates this medium. Video website content is a small businesss best friend. The many statistics that support the use of small business videos are not just encouraging - they are massively and overwhelmingly convincing. They demonstrate that there is no other single type of advertising that even comes close to being as beneficial for ones business as film content on a business website.. A small business is defined as a business with less than 500 employees, but most small businesses are actually far smaller. In fact, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy,. 70% of all small businesses are owned and operated by ...
Now, when we talk about small business loans, we mean just that - small business loans. We are not talking about a $1 million loan to purchase some commercial real estate or $500,000 to buy some investment property. We are not talking about a $3 million credit line just to show capital on a balance sheet. And, we are not talking about a $250,000 equipment loan for a regional construction company.. We are talking about true small business credit - loans under $150,000. Capital amounts that the 22 million small businesses in this country could use at some point in time for working capital, to renovate their location, purchase inventory, marketing, meeting payroll, developing new products or to simply have the capital on hand to acquire and satisfy customers (what business is really about).. But, we have heard ad nauseam that banks are just not lending to small businesses - claiming there is too much risk in smaller firms. So, many small companies are not even applying for credit anymore out of ...

Even Forbes columnist Avik Roy is recanting. Earlier this month he acknowledged that under Obamacare, many Americans who buy their own coverage in 2014 will find that insurance is significantly more affordable than it was in the past: Three states will see meaningful declines in rates: Colorado (34 percent), Ohio (30 percent), and New York (27 percent).. Colorado, Ohio and New York are not unique. As states announce the prices that carriers will be charging in the online marketplaces (or Exchanges) where Americans who dont have health benefits rate at work will be purchasing their own coverage, jaws are dropping. Rates are coming down, not only for those individuals, but for some small business owners who will be buying insurance for their employees in separate SHOP (Small Business Health Options Program) Exchanges.. What may be most surprising is that premiums will be lower, not only in liberal Blue states but in some Red states that are opposed to Obamacare.. What is making health ...
This week, the Trump administration announced plans to dismantle the Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP, the part of the Affordable Care Act that created online insurance marketplaces for small businesses.. As of early 2017, nearly 230,000 people were covered through SHOP health plans - a fraction of the 4 million the Congressional Budget Office estimated would enroll for coverage through SHOP in 2015.. The specifics of the impending SHOP change are a work in progress, and federal health officials told the L.A. Times Monday that they plan to propose a new federal rule to take effect in January.. The announcement comes on the heels of the House of ...

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued two Q&As on enrollment in the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Marketplace. The CMS states that employers will not need to meet the minimum participation requirement upon renewal for renewals in federally-facilitated SHOPs (FF-SHOPs) that occur from November 15 to December 15. This is because the CMS believes that it would be unduly burdensome to non-renew coverage under the exception to guaranteed renewability for failure to meet minimum participation rates only to re-enroll employers under guaranteed availability during that period. Under guaranteed availability requirements, employers must be allowed to purchase coverage from November 15 to December 15, even if they cannot meet minimum participation requirements, the CMS explained. For FF-SHOPs, minimum participation is generally set at 70 percent…. (Read Intelliconnect) ». ...

This is part of a series of personal accounts about small business and the recession. The writers are contributors to Associated Content.. by Michelle L Devon. If there is a recession going on, I hadnt noticed. At Christmas, I was the only member of my family to purchase gifts for everyone. My mother said, Its been a hard year for everyone.. Not for me, I answered. Business is going great for me.. Thats one of the good things about owning a small business that provides contract services. When a recession hits and layoffs happen, companies merge employee duties so one person takes on the role of two, without additional compensation.. Unfortunately, companies become overextended. With layoffs, there arent enough people to do the jobs required. Thats where my business lends a hand.. I opened Accentuate Services, my small business in Odessa, Texas, more than 14 years ago to offer accounting, bookkeeping, transcription and administrative services to other companies. All too often, as small business owners, we rush to get a product out before its time, before its been fully considered or tested. Rowling sets a great example of getting a product just right before presenting it to the world.. Tip # 2: When a Great Idea Grabs You - Grab Back.. You sort of start thinking anythings possible if youve got enough nerve. - Rowling. Great ideas are unmistakably powerful in their announcement and come when least expected. Rowling says:. Where the idea for Harry Potter actually came from, I really couldnt tell you. I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and it just popped into my head. I spent four hours thinking about what Hogwarts would be like. By the time I got off at Kings Cross, many of the characters in the books had already been invented.. As small business owners, we know when a great idea is upon us. The problem is, we often question it, second-guess it, and rationalize it away. Not Rowling. Fortunately, several measures that would offer small businesses relief from spiraling health costs are pending before Congress.. For many small firms, insurance is more expensive than ever. In a recent survey, 91 percent reported that their insurance costs rose following their latest renewal. A February report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimated that premiums would rise for two-thirds of workers at small businesses - roughly 11 million Americans.. One reason for these price increases is the federal healthcare laws annual $8-billion fee on health insurance providers. Carriers will have to pass this added expense on to employers - and consequently, their workers. Premiums are expected to increase by as much as $160 per person this year.. New federal community rating rules may also lead to higher premiums and create administrative headaches for small business owners. These rules do not allow insurers to charge older workers any more than three times what younger ones ...

For 30 years, federal agencies have made awards to small businesses for technology research and development through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and, more recently, through the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. Over the past 6 years, agencies have obligated about $2.4 billion annually for these two programs. Federal agencies with a budget of more than $100 million for extramural research or research and development--which is conducted by nonfederal employees outside of federal facilities--must establish and operate an SBIR program. Eleven federal agencies currently participate in the SBIR program: the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense (DOD), Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Transportation; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); and the National Science Foundation. Federal agencies with a budget of more than $1 billion for extramural research or ...

To improve the quality of entrepreneurship education, this study explored factors linked to teachers competencies in entrepreneurship education in China. A regression analysis based on 12,596 teachers questionnaires showed that the competencies of teachers in entrepreneurship education had three dimensions. The factors linked to teachers competencies were professional training, new modes of teaching, entrepreneurial practice, entrepreneurial culture, and policy guarantee. At the same time, the influence mechanism between teachers overall competency and factors is explored. For a higher quality of entrepreneurship education, it is necessary to adopt new modes of teaching, pay attention to teachers careers, and improve the evaluation and recruitment mechanism for teachers. This paper develops and tests hypotheses concerning the effect of migrant status and ethnicity on propensity to engage in entrepreneurship (defined as new business activity) at the individual level in the UK. The hypotheses are tested using bivariate analysis (Pearson tests of independence) and multivariate analysis (binary logistic regression). Bivariate analysis suggests that new business activity varies with migrant status and ethnicity. Multivariate analysis suggests that migration increases the odds of engaging in new business activity, that the independent effect of ethnicity is marginal, and that being a recent ethnic minority migrant decreases the odds, after controlling for other individual level factors. At the regional level, a preliminary analysis suggests that gross migration flow has a higher correlation with new business activity than other commonly used regional demographic or economic development measures. Entrepreneurship has been regarded as a new science in the promotion of economic development, which has led to rapid development in entrepreneurship education. The growing number of students enrolled in entrepreneurship programs creates unprecedented challenges on educators. Although multiple teaching and learning activities are adopted in entrepreneurship education, these are mainly carried out using traditional classroom lectures, case studies and group discussions. Nowadays, information & communication technology (ICT) is used to enhance the effectiveness of traditional teaching methods and competency training. PowToon is a web-based ICT tool that hat allows teachers and students to quickly and easily create animated presentations. Using quasi-experimental design and qualitative method, this study is to examine whether PowToon is an effective tool for business plan presentation. The study of social entrepreneurship has received growing attention as a scholarly field of research in the past two decades. To date, however, the field remains in an embryonic state (Short, Moss, & Lumpkin, 2009). Research on social entrepreneurship has focused mostly on defining the fields meaning and domain (see, e.g., Austin, Stevenson, & Wei-Skillern, 2006; Galaskiewicz & Barringer, 2012; Lan & Galaskiewicz, 2012; Peredo & Chrisman, 2006; Zahra, Gedajlovic, Neubaum, & Shulman, 2009), especially to set it apart from commercial entrepreneurship, but empirical efforts are severely lacking (Hoogendoorn, Pennings, & Thurik, 2010). Among the few empirical articles on social entrepreneurship, most are case studies lacking formal hypotheses and rigorous methods (see Short et al., 2009, for a review). To progress the fields scientific inquiry, we need more empirical studies employing different research methods (Hoogendoorn et al. 2010; Short et al., 2009).. Furthermore, extant empirical research ...
The purpose of this chapter is to support entrepreneurship scholars in their efforts to integrate neuroimaging with entrepreneurship. First, we describe the potential benefits of using neuroimaging in entrepreneurship research. Second, we discuss general issues and considerations to make in neuroimaging research. Then we focus on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a neuroimaging method to bring the neural level of analysis to entrepreneurship research. We discuss opportunity recognition and assessment, and entrepreneurial decision making as examples of topic areas ripe for neuroentrepreneurship and fMRI. We subsequently describe hypotheses designs and best practices in fMRI research. Finally, we close with a discussion regarding interpretation and communication of results.

Unfortunately, assorted special interests and/or regulators recently have pushed for or are considering increased, unwarranted regulation on railroads. These efforts include forced access, whereby the Surface Transportation Board (STB) would force railroads to provide access to their private networks to competing railroads. Another STB proposal would impose economic regulations for the first time in 20 years on railroads as they pertain to five commodities - primary steel products, coke made from coal, hydraulic cement, scrap steel and crushed stone. Indeed, a few players are calling for the broad imposition of price controls. These proposals make no sense given that the transportation industry is increasingly competitive, with expanding choices for customers. If these regulatory measures were imposed, the results inevitably would involve less efficiency, reduced quality of service, and restrained investment and innovation. Again, that would be bad news for small businesses in the railroad ...

The Wikimedia system has responded in at least three ways to questionable edits. The most obvious response is case-by-case, based on the watch button at the top of each article: A user who sets that switch can get emails when that article is changed. Another is an occasional (usually temporary) block. At least some of these are documented in Wikipedia:Congressional staffer edits. For edits from IP addresses associated with the U.S. Congress, Ed Summers also created a Twitter feed to notify the world of any changes made from those addresses: @congressedits was an automated Twitter account from 2014 to 2018 that tweeted anonymous changes to Wikipedia articles that originated from IP addresses belonging to the United States Congress. The changes were presumed to have been made by the staffs of US elected representatives and senators. Prior to the Twitter feed, the best information about what congressional staffers were editing was found in the present article on U.S. Congressional staff edits to ...

Re-examining Malay/Muslim Entrepreneurship: Perceptions, Realities and Hopes by Abdul Shariff Aboo Kassim. This commentary was also published in Karyawan, A Magazine by the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP), July 2016, Volume 11, Issue 2.. Promotion and advancement of Malay/Muslim entrepreneurship has often been viewed through the business lens. Thus, the solutions proposed have ranged from competence- and productivity-enhancing programmes, such as those offered by the SME Centre at the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI), to the building of sustainable business models.. However, entrepreneurial development is naturally multifaceted and is linked to areas, such as education and skills development, social capital, historical progress and culture. Therefore, any initiative to promote and advance entrepreneurship ought to take an interdisciplinary approach in recognition of this complexity.. While there are those who believe that business is a sphere in which ideas and ...
