Its quite common to hear someone say Im a single parent this week when their husband/wife/partner is out of town due to work obligations.. I certainly know that experience; Daddy-o is away on average four days a week. Its no easy feat for a mama of six and it certainly takes its toll - but however tricky, you wont catch me referring to myself as a single parent.. Why not? Out of respect for all the real single parents out there. While I may be temporarily the only parent on location, I am not a single parent.. Heres the difference:. Emotional Support. Parents who have a partner away on a business trip may be alone physically, but not emotionally. I can reach out to Daddy-o about a kid issue anytime and we can talk it through and problem solve as a team. I have single parent friends who risk a lot when they reach out to the other parent - the call can be greeted with conflict, criticism or the possibility of it being thrown back at them in court one day. Not being able to use the other ...

If youre a single parent, unemployed or struggling to get by in a dead-end job, one of the best ways to improve your situation is by going back to school. Common problems facing many single parents today is how to pay for childcare while attending school.
Being a single parent is not easy; luckily I have a good co-parenting relationship with my ex-husband, and we do our best to work together to cover for the other when something comes up. Putting aside scheduling issues, however, the fact remains that when you are a single parent the entire responsibility of managing your household falls on you. Balancing the demands of work with those of your children are your top two priorities. Sometimes, that leaves little room for much else, yet if you are ever going to find a second chance at falling in love, you are going to have to make time and allow for a third priority to come into play.. When juggling multiple priorities, I think seeing them as fluid makes a lot of sense. In other words, the order of priorities may change over time given the competing demands at that time. Reassuring our children that no matter what, they will always be a priority is the key to helping them learn patience, and actually the sooner they realize that the world does not ...
But Word pressed on, even doubling up on her class load the last six months, and Friday evening she walked across the stage to accept her Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Management from Grand Canyon University.. I feel absolutely amazing, she said. Now Im able to have conversations with my daughter (12-year-old Briyanna) about school - shes asking about how you get a doctorate. And I can tell other single parents that they can do it.. Words interest in getting her degree was piqued by talking to her sister, Brittany Ware, an October 2018 GCU graduate and the person she considers her best friend. But it wasnt that long ago that Words main focus was simply on getting healthy.. Word had a migraine coming on while she was singing in a Christmas program in 2016, and it got so severe she passed out. A doctors examination revealed the aneurysm.. The doctor came in, and I dont remember anything after that, she said. As a single parent, your biggest fear is leaving your ...

Moving from a marriage where you have someone else to rely on financially to being a single parent can be very challenging. Not only do you have to go through the process of getting divorced from your spouse, but you now are solely responsible for your own financial success or failure. But to make sure that you never have to deal with a financial failure, here are three tips for surviving financially as a newly single parent. Eliminate Debt As Quickly As You Can Before you can start getting ahead with our finances, you have to deal with any past financial baggage thats left over from your marriage, including debt. To give you the best chance of financial success, its wise to eliminate your debt as quickly as you can. To do this, Jennifer Wolf, a contributor to The Spruce, recommends that you start putting all extra funds toward your piece of debt with the highest interest rate, as this debt is costing you the largest amount of money. Even if youre only barely able to pay more than the minimum ...

The City of Middletown is resource-rich, but lacks systems that can distribute those resources among all of its citizens. Research shows that many of the citys single parents, particularly those of color, are at a disadvantage and struggle to qualify for living-wage employment. Childcare needs further restrict employment choices, as do social networks with limited access to employment opportunities beyond minimum-wage jobs with high turnover rates.. Forty-three percent of Middletown families are single parent families, and 35 percent of those families are living at or below the federal poverty level. Single parents report that they feel trapped in a succession of minimum-wage jobs that offer no hope for a better future for themselves or their children. Local employers have become used to the constant churn of minimum-wage workers, who cost time and money to replace. Yet, little effort is put toward addressing this problem. ...

Red, I agree with what you are saying. Most people are under some sort of delusion about the poverty single parents and their children live in. Funny how the chain-smoking, Jerry Springer addicted,slobbed-out single mum is THE stereotype shoved down our throats every day.You rarely hear of all the mums doing exceptional juggling of life and the contributions made by them cos raising kids and the million positive exhausting, endless jobs mums do is ignored, devalued and obsolete in the minds of most people whereas making money is the most important thing to them, thats why they get moralistic, they think they are better and the unfair tax system helps to promote that feeling. The system as we know is not based on everybody getting the chance at a decent life, no matter how hard you toil.I do see the attitude towards welfare mums from the govt.,the media and society as very backwards and hateful, very misogynist actually, seperate from classism.Quite witchhunt in its essence. Absentee fathers, of ...

Helpful, trusted answers from doctors: Dr. Lambert on single parent adoption: There are both rules regarding patient confidentiality at both the federal and state level. State by state rules vary but are centered in limiting access to personal medical information. For such a registry to exist the donor or donors would first have to agree to share their identifying information.I dont see that happening in the present environment.

Finally, and most frustratingly, Ive heard that gay marriage will undermine straight marriage and families. And this is the one I just dont get the most. I dont understand how a gay couple getting married makes my marriage to Slappy any less special or important. I dont know why children cant thrive in a family with two fathers or two mothers. If so many children thrive in single parent families, shouldnt double parent families be even better? We have couples in stable relationships who want to have children, so why not? Because they might teach their children that being different is okay? Because they might teach them to believe that homosexuality is not wrong? Because these children might be more tolerant of people who are different? Which of these qualities is the despicable one ...

My mothers house was the 1970s annex for peripatetic Parents-Without-Partners, angst ridden homeless young men from the local theatre group, abandoned children, and women seeking refuge from violent partners. She spent two decades in voluntary community education & welfare with Parents without Partners, womens refuges, citizens advice bureaux, acting as commissioner for taking affidavits, and by offering temporary shelter in her home. Tenaciously, she ferreted out missing pieces of the perplexing puzzle of the law, social security, and government grants to rectify anomalies and alleviate despair for single parent families.. I am cold. I am in my bed in the dark. A mouse tugs at my overhanging sheet. I stiffen on my periphery but my core pricks and writhes. Paralysed, I lie in my prison. Three walls are gloomy light grey, but the ballerinas leaping from the wallpapered fourth are menacing. Insistent scratching reverberates around the room. The intruder hoists itself up, swinging on my cotton ...
If there is anything to know about this young man, its that he had a passion for the stars, the skies and science. He was a true family man going above and beyond for those in his family and the friends he considered family. He even attended the ultrasounds of my daughter (his first niece) and could not wait to be an uncle. If you knew Andrew, you were blessed.. Andrew Kretzmer was born on September 3rd, 1985. He was the pride and joy for his parents until his sister (me) was born and stole some of the limelight from him. From a young age he and I had a unique bond. We went through the loss of our father (Paul Kretzmer), the transition to a single parent family and then the transition of having a step-father and step-brothers. Then we suffered the loss of our mother (Lorraine [Hanbicki] Lucarelli) to cancer together and our bond grew only stronger.. Andrew was employed by Petro Extrusions Tech. Dear Editor Our group has been evaluating ways[1] of empowering parents to promote family centred care in the neonatal intensive care unit.[2] We therefore read with interest the important article showing parental hope to be more strongly associated with the health related quality of life (HRQL) than neonatal or current physical deficits.[3] Hope is prevalent amongst parents and staff in the neonatal intensive care unit[4] and comes in a spectrum ranging from hope for survival to hope of a normal outcome. We would like the authors to define what hope is. It is interesting that hope is not listed in the Mosbys Dictionary but hopelessness is: a state in which an individual sees limited or no alternatives or personal choices available and is unable to mobilize energy on his or her own behalf.[5] The incidence of single parent families in the cohort was 17%. This is lower than the 50% reported in an earlier study with divorce rate for families having a child with spina bifida being nine times ...

Giving birth and raising a child is always a challenge. People all over the world are buoyed down when faced with the responsibility of parenthood. But when you have your spouse at your side you feel a lot confident as you are assured of the presence of an emotional support. Single parenthood is a huge challenge in itself as you have to deal with the situation where you have lost your loved one and at the same time, you need to take up the responsibilities of rearing the child and life as a whole. By contrast, British liberalism reigns largely unchallenged. Small victories are won - the government defeat over the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill, and the rejection of the Joffe Bill - but the general policy thrust, both Conservative and Labour, is liberal. Daily, the headlines are dominated by yet another liberal triumph. Cohabiting couples are to have equal rights as the married; churches and mosques are to be forced to rent out their premises to homosexuals; under-age sex is actively encouraged by the media; single parent families are to be admired as much as married families; drug-taking celebs are condoned; Christian teaching is thought freakish and extreme; and the Human Rights Act makes a mockery of the criminal justice system to the point of virtual collapse of law and order ...
By taking away family and childcare payments or an early education away from the children of low income families or single parent families who conscientiously choose to selectively vaccinate or not vaccinate, you are putting them in the impossible position of having to choose between feeding and housing their families and vaccinating their children against their will, THIS IS NOT LEGAL CONSENT, IT IS BLACKMAIL!. If any of these children are injured or killed because their parents have been forced to vaccinate under duress, is the Government ready to be legally responsible? Especially as there is no victim friendly system in place to sue the vaccine makers or government officials in Australia.. Stop using Whooping Cough rates as an excuse to attack conscientious objectors and start looking at the real problem, the vaccine.. In 1991 ,71% of Australian children were fully vaccinated and there were only 347 cases of Whooping Cough, while in 2011 with 90% of children vaccinated, we had 38,751 cases ...

This is the personal story of CFIDS sufferer Kristy Burton-Vunesky:. A little over a year ago I was an active, driven and successful woman. I was a single parent with two children, a full-time college professor and a full-time doctoral student with many hobbies. I exercised nearly every day; walking, running, strength training, yoga, Pilates and various dance classes kept me active and in shape. My fiance and I loved to hike and bike, and our family would go camping and canoeing every summer. I loved the outdoors and spent as much time outside as possible. When I wasnt outside I was seeing a play at a local theater, going to the symphony or opera, or going to the movies, art shows, craft fairs or whatever struck my fancy. I never sat still. I was always on the move. That all changed drastically in March of 2006.. You can read the rest of the article here.. ...

Single mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are likely to experience high levels of stress and be at risk for depression. However, respite care can reduce parenting stress and lower psychological distress in parents of children with disabilities. This study focused on single mothers of children with ASD and their reports of stress relative to respite care received. One hundred and twenty-two single mothers completed the Respite Care Instrument, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, Hassles and Uplifts Scale, and Caregiver Burden Instrument. Results were mixed. Respite care was positively related to daily uplifts, but not significantly related to depression or stress. Uplifts mediated the relationship between respite care and depression, but stress did not mediate the relationship between respite care and depression, indicating uplifts were a process through which respite care had an indirect effect on depression. More than half (59.8%; n = 73) of mothers

Just as there are quibbles about who was left out of the most recent balloting there were slights back at the beginning. Rogers (his first name was his mothers maiden name) Hornsby, who still possesses the second highest lifetime batting average behind Cobb, was overlooked for six years before gaining entrance to Cooperstown. Hornsby provides quite a contrast to many overpaid professional athletes of the 21st Century. His mother was widowed when Rogers was only two. The single parent family moved from Winters, Texas to Fort Worth so Hornsbys older brothers could get meat packing jobs with Swift and Company. At ten, Rogers went to work part time at Swift as a messenger and utility infielder on the company baseball team. He dropped out of school in the tenth grade to labor at Swift and continue to play semi-pro baseball in the evenings and weekends. Hornsby signed a minor league contract at eighteen. He made it to the majors at nineteen and by the time he reached the age of twenty-five he was an ...

Family structure is the most important risk factor in child sexual abuse. Children who live with two married biological parents are at low risk for abuse. The risk increases when children live with step-parents or a single parent. Children living without either parent (foster children) are 10 times more likely to be sexually abused than children that live with both biological parents. Children who live with a single parent that has a live-in partner are at the highest risk: they are 20 times more likely to be victims of child sexual abuse than children living with both biological parents (Sedlack, et. al., 2010 ...

5-year period was almost 70% higher than for mothers with partners when adjustments were made for age (table 2). However, the risks were reduced when hospital data indicating previous severe somatic or psychiatric morbidity were entered into the model. When socioeconomic conditions (socioeconomic status, social welfare, number of children, type of dwelling) were entered into the model, there was a greater decrease in the mortality risk (table 2). There was an excess risk for ischaemic heart disease among lone mothers when we adjusted only for age. However, when we adjusted for socioeconomic factors and previous psychiatric disease, which were highly correlated to smoking, the significant effects diminished. The greatest risks were found among external causes (E800E999), including suicide, with an almost 60% increased risk for lone mothers after adjustment for both hospital inpatient care and socioeconomic conditions.. By grouping the lone mothers and mothers with partners in 1990 according to ...

Under Florida law, a sperm donor for artificial insemination has no paternity rights.. However, Gerina claimed that in the verbal agreement he entered into with the lesbian couple when they asked him for his sperm thathe assumed he would be able to participate in the life of the child he fathered.. They asked me, Gerina told The Miami Herald. I was flattered by it. I thought what a great opportunity for me to have a baby.. Giving Back: Chinx Is Helping Out Single-Parent Homes For Chinxmas on In Flex We Trust - Its the season of giving, and Coke Boys rapper Chinx will be…
The average kid in a single-parent family looks much the same emotionally as children who grow up in the most conflicted two-parent homes, says Larry Bumpass, a sociologist at the University of Wisconsin. But, he adds, the average is not the script written for every child. The outcomes are not all negative; it s just a matter of relative probability ... the majority will do just fine. Lyn Freundlich, who is raising two boys in Boston with their father, Billy Brittingham, says her home is as stable as any on the block. Freundlich and Brittingham have no plans to marry even though they ve been living together for 13 years. It s not important to me, says Freundlich, 36, who works for the Boston AIDS Action Committee. Marriage feels like a really unfair institution where the government validates some relationships and not others. I can t think of any reason compelling enough to become part of an institution I m uncomfortable with. When she was pregnant with their first son, Jordan, now 6, ...
Policy makers across the country are increasingly interested in ensuring the adequacy of paid sick days policies. In addition to concerns about workers ability to respond to their own health needs, there is growing recognition that, with so many dual-earner and single-parent families, family members health needs can be addressed only by workers taking time from their scheduled hours on the job. Paid sick days policies also allow workers with contagious diseases to avoid unnecessary contact with co-workers and customers and, thus, are a fundamental public health measure. Paid sick days protect workers from being fired when they are too sick to work and offer substantial savings to employers by reducing turnover and minimizing absenteeism.. ...
Three years after recession took hold of the nation, Alabama has had a hard time dealing with the consequences. A report released last week details 10 statistics illustrating that consequences may be even more difficult for the states children.. The worsening statistics, including infant mortality rate, the number of low-birthweight babies, teen death rate, rising rates of child poverty and single-parent families, are affected by the economy, because many are problems associated with poverty.. ...
This chapter explores fiction on the family, and assesses the responses of writers to the dislocation of traditional kinship patterns in Japan and Taiwan that occurred during the miracle years of economic growth. This break with the past assumes numerous forms. The weakening of extended kin networks and the corresponding growth of nuclear families, a waning of family authority, increasing differentiation of social networks away from the core familial matrix, late marriage, a rising incidence of divorce, increased numbers of single-parent families, and a declining birth-rate are among the shifts that transformed notions of home and household in postwar Japan and Taiwan as, of course, elsewhere. The chapter explores these linked themes through reference to four key texts: Wang Wenxings
In 2003/04, the Senate Community Affairs References Committee held an inquiry known as Children in Institutional Care. As a result of this inquiry two reports were tabled in the Senate. The first report, Forgotten Australians - a report on Australians who experienced institutional or out of home care as children was tabled on 30 August 2004 and the Protecting vulnerable children - A national challenge on the inquiry into children in institutional or out of home care was tabled on 17 March 2005.. The Forgotten Australians Report estimated that 500,000 Australians experienced care in an orphanage, home or other form of out-of home care during the last century. Many children were placed for reasons such as economic stress and social disadvantage, having a single parent (predominantly unmarried women), divorce, domestic violence, parental alcoholism, a death of a parent, or parents separated by hardship or war.. The Victorian Governments submission to this inquiry estimated that more than ...
In this enforced period of social isolation for Covid-19, when we are bound to our homes without the usual social supports that help to sustain us, discussions of the gendered imbalances of domestic labour and childcare have resurfaced. Single parents, the majority of whom are women, are facing a particularly heavy burden. Reports have emerged of working mothers struggling to keep up with the demands of work and home life. And, while the injunction to stay at home promotes a vision of the home as a safe haven, reports of domestic violence and a rise in image-based sexual abuse following increased screen time during Covid-19, puts considerable pressure on an idea of domestic bliss. The economic and capitalistic structures that produce and support the private conditions of home life need to be critically interrogated. As Jilly Boyce Kay has argued in a recent essay for Feminist Media Studies, the family in its current historical manifestation is not a retreat or a haven from the vagaries ...
The present study examined the influence of family circumstance on the physical activity and sedentary behaviour of adolescents living in England. Associations were not consistent across behaviours or between genders, and relationships for variables with more than two categories were not necessarily linear. Overall, higher levels of sedentary behaviour were associated with living in a single parent household in boys and lower SES in girls. Living in a low SES neighbourhood was associated with reduced participation in sports/exercise in boys and girls, and low individual level SES was associated with lower levels of active travel in boys only. Family structure was not associated with physical activity in girls, and relationships were inconsistent in boys.. Total sedentary behaviour was greater in boys from single versus dual parent households on weekdays and at weekends. Associations with individual sedentary behaviours (e.g. TV viewing, computer use) or groups of sedentary behaviour (e.g. ...

Coronavirus: Pregnant and sick with COVID-19 - visiting a hospital during the 2nd wave We know the newborn period is incredibly difficult and sometimes you can have a single parent or the partner needs to go back to work and there are limited people to turn to and so with COVID-19 restrictions, stay at home orders, there were limited people that families could turn to for support in the home, said Dr. Tali Bogler, the studys lead author and family physician and chair of family medicine obstetrics at Unity Health Torontos St. Michaels Hospital. This was incredibly difficult for people and had a huge impact on peoples mental health.. After her son was born, Bourdon said she felt the effects of social isolation due to widespread lockdowns in Ontario.. It was just a very isolating time for my family. Given that were here in Toronto and our family and friends are in a different city, we didnt have that critical support that a lot of new parents or parents in general really need, she ...
Having breakfast, eating food cooked from scratch and eating together as a family have health and psychosocial benefits for young children. This study investigates how these parentally determined behaviours relate to childrens dietary quality and uses a psychological model, the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), to investigate socio-cognitive predictors of these behaviours in socially disadvantaged mothers of young children in Scotland. Three hundred mothers of children aged 2 years (from 372 invited to participate, 81% response rate), recruited via General Practitioners, took part in home-based semi-structured interviews in a cross-sectional survey of maternal psychological factors related to their childrens dietary quality. Regression analyses examined statistical predictors of maternal intentions and feeding behaviours. Mothers of children with poorer quality diets were less likely than others to provide breakfast every day, cook from scratch and provide proper sit-down meals. TPB socio
Iam so very thankful that I found this site on Facebook. Iam a mother of 3. I have 2 daughters 11 & 14, and my son is 4. When my son was born he had some health issues and had to spend an extra couple of days in the hospital, and because of this the pediatrician said it wasnt safe to perform a circumcision. I honestly hadnt given it much thought (while I was pregnant) as to whether or not he would have this done. Iam a single parent, my sons father hasnt been in the picture since I found out I was pregnant so I only had the thoughts and opinions of myself and my (female) best friend. My son was sent to a urologist when he was about 9 months old, for a circumcision consult. Let me just say, from the beginning I was NEVER comfortable with the thought of my sons penis being cut on. With that said, during the consult the doctor says that my sons penis has a slight curve to it that may or may not fix itself as he gets older. The doctor then proceeds to tell me that when my son was 18 months ...

Ann: thank you for your post. Allow me to respond.. According to the Un. Of Washington website for Womens Health:. The reasons for women who choose to terminate pregnancy are:. 1. She is not ready to be a parent.. 2. She cannot afford a baby.. 3. She doesnt want to be a single parent.. 4. She doesnt want anyone to know she has had sex or is pregnant.. 5. She has all the children she wants.. 6. She or the fetus has health problems. 7. She was a victim of rape or incest.. To me, that sounds mostly like birth-control. I dont know how else to characterize it. This does not pass any judgment on the legitimacy of termination as birth control, but it is a form of birth control.. Under the topic, Does my partner or parent need to know? they say No, they do not need to know. However, *most women come to the clinic with their partners*. More than half of teenagers talk with at least one parent before getting an abortion.. To me, this sounds like most men do care, not the opposite. According to a ...
We never would have suspected that she would ever even consider keeping the children away from the father who loved them so much. We also would have bet the farm (if we had one) that she would never make it almost impossible for us to be with our grandchildren. She absolutely knew how we doted over them when they were here. We were to find out we were wrong on both counts, said Ronald.. Although broken marriages and single parents seem to be the norm in society today, it does not explain why good fathers and their kids cannot be happy and enjoy each others company on a consistent basis. Fight alongside one grandmother whose love and persistence is tried and tested in a world led by a two-faced mother and a legal system lacking any consideration for a good father and his sons.. Georgie Mitchell from Sheffield Social Savers shared how one of the women they have been able to support is a single parent who is really active with volunteering in the community even though she has a lot of challenges of her own. Her daughter broke her leg just before schools opened up again. She was in a plaster cast all the way up to her hip but the hospital said they couldnt give her a wheelchair. To get a wheelchair she was going to have to pay £18 per week to rent one which she just couldnt afford, and without it her daughter wasnt going to be able to go to back to school. We were able to pay for the wheelchair for six weeks for her.. Another group (left anonymous here) has been able to support a family fleeing a situation of domestic violence and provide crisis support to an older woman who was contemplating suicide due to months of isolation amidst long-term mental health challenges.. Sharon Davis, Mums Mart Treasurer, recounts how: We have always had women of lots of different ...

Poor children do worse in school than their well-off peers. They are more likely to experience learning disabilities and developmental delays.[3] Poor children score between 6 and 13 points lower on various standardized tests of IQ, verbal ability, and achievement.[4] Poverty also has a negative impact on high-school graduation[5] and college attendance.[6] Children raised by a single parent, children who have more than two siblings, children by teenaged parents and children raised in poverty-stricken neighbourhoods are also at risk of low academic achievement.[7] ...
One out of every six kids in Alberta currently live in poverty. Poverty is a widespread issue across the province, but vulnerable groups such as single parents, minimum wage earners, and racialized communities are more susceptible.
People often talk about how the federal income tax should not push people deeper into poverty. One way to measure how well the system performs in this regard is to look at how much a person or family can earn before income taxes kick in. Current laws combination of standard deductions, personal exemptions, and credits yields some fairly odd results. This year, for a single person without children, the income tax threshold is $8,275; in other words, a person in this category will not pay income tax on the first $8,275 of wage earnings. For married people without children, the threshold is $12,950, or $6,475 per person--a marriage penalty. When children enter the picture, things get even stranger. If a single person has a child, the tax threshold jumps by about $13,300. If a couple has a child, the threshold rises by only $10,400. (For additional children, the changes in the tax threshold are more similar among couples and single parents, about $5,400 for a second child and about $2 ...
In the 24/7 society, a strong need exists to facilitate combining work and life. As the number of women, dual-earner couples and single parents in the workforce will continue to increase,1 the relevance of work-life balance will also increase. European Agency for Safety and Health at Work Research has classified work-life conflict (WLC) as one of the most emerging psychosocial risk factors and highlights its negative consequences for the workforce.2. Mutually incompatible demands from the work and non-work domains are common in todays work life and can lead to WLC.3 In general, WLC is more common among women than men,4 and the prevalence of WLC is higher among full-time than part-time workers.5 WLC has substantial consequences for employees, their family members and employers6 affecting well-being, productivity and costs. WLC is associated with negative consequences such as job strain,7 sleep complaints,4 8 depressive symptoms8 9 and increased sickness absence.10. In large-scale studies, the ...

I think my wake up call was when I was taking my daughter out of the church sanctuary for being a little loud and I was going to explain to her in a calm voice that she needed to be quiet in the sanctuary at church and right as we were walking passing the Deacon she said in ...
Many schools today offer scholarships based on the financial need of their parents. One example is the McKay scholarships Tampa parents can use to send their kids to a private school. You usually need to submit documents that show how much money you and your spouse make each year. If you are a single parent, you may submit your most recent tax records and supply a copy of your more recent pay stubs. These scholarships range in size based on how much financial need your family has. You may need to pay a set amount of pocket, though some scholarships will cover the total cost of tuition ...
Gethin Jones is a man of wisdom, insight and compassion. He has an insiders bitter understanding of life in care, youth justice, drug addiction and prison. In many ways, his story is one of all that is wrong with the criminal justice system when it turns its firepower on the young.. I spoke to Gethin late last year as I approached my 50th birthday. He and I are about the same age. In terms of our life journeys, that is where the similarities largely end. Now smartly dressed, balding, but looking every inch the successful professional that he is today, Gethins start in life could not have been more different.. His mother, a single parent to four children, had spent her childhood in care and had learning difficulties. With hindsight, Gethin understands that his mothers history and struggles made it impossible for her to relate to her children in an ideal and entirely nurturing way. Without a hint of blame, he observes that he simply did not have the sort of family relationships and support that a ...

CONTEXT Early sexual initiation (before age 16) has been linked to an increased risk of teenage pregnancy and STDs. Most research on correlates of early sexual initiation is from the United States; no similar work has been conducted in France, where the sociocultural environment differs. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the 2010 Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children survey were used to examine the relationships of personal, family, peer, school and neighborhood characteristics with early sexual initiation among 1,094 French females in grades 8-10. Two-level logistic regressions were used to identify associations. RESULTS Twenty-five percent of respondents had had sex before age 16. Early sexual initiation was primarily -associated with individual-level characteristics. Young women had an elevated likelihood of having initiated sex early if they went out after school at least four times a week (odds ratio, 2.0), had repeated a grade (1.8), lived with a single parent or in a stepfamily (1.8 ...
The Guru was also introduced to the last (but definitely not least) person in Marcies life: her husband. She described the Guru how he helped her while starting her business by using a $6000 loan against his retirement plan: He believed in me. I purchased coats with the money. I sold them all and continued reinvesting the profits until we had enough money to open the first store. While speaking to her, the first thing that strikes the Guru is that Marcie Rea is all about family and hard work. She is a wife, a mother and grandmother. When shes not working in her business, she stays busy serving her trade, her community, and her church. When she finds extra time (huh?), she loves playing golf with her husband.. I asked Marcie if there was any other influence in her life that inspired her to follow this innate passion for fur. She replied that her mother was a hard-working single parent who always had an eye for beautiful things. After Marcie started her business, one of the most rewarding ...
