SINGAPORE, October 11, 2017: Konica Minolta, an integral value provider with customer-centric solutions, and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), one of Singapores largest multi-disciplinary hospitals, have collaborated on the investigation of automatic wound (pressure ulcer) measurement and monitoring solution. The clinical study result of using a non-contact hand-held wound measurement device (HWMD) was updated at the recent Singapore Health & Biomedical Congress 2017.. Effective wound management is challenging. Variety of wounds can occur and are treated by multiple healthcare professionals across settings. Wound imaging along with objective and precise measurements are paramount to improve prognostic values of healing and treatment efficacy (Chang et al. 2011, Hammond 2011). Current practice may lack accuracy and consistency that are dependent on users, time consuming and requires direct contact with wound beds (Hammond 2014, Langemo et al 2015).. The HWMD allows clinicians to capture ...
In the 1820s, Singapore became established as a successful trading centre. Large numbers of immigrants came to the colony, hoping to make their fortune here. Many of these immigrants were poor and destitute, and malnutrition was common; it was estimated that about 100 immigrants died each year from starvation.[citation needed] The British government set up a paupers hospital in the 1820s but it closed in the 1830s because of insufficient funds. The government then suggested that the better-off members of each community take care of their own poor. Subsequently, some of the more benevolent members of the community responded. One such person was Tan Tock Seng, the acting Kapitan China of Singapore, a successful businessman and the citys first Asian Justice of Peace, who offered $5,000 for the construction of Singapores first privately funded hospital.[1] The foundation stone of the hospital, then called Chinese Pauper Hospital, was laid on 25 May 1844 on Pearls Hill.[1] The building was ...

Background: Sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages (called soft drinks) and juices, which have a high glycemic load relative to other foods and beverages, have been hypothesized as pancreatic cancer risk factors. However, data thus far are scarce, especially from non-European descent populations. We investigated whether higher consumption of soft drinks and juice increases the risk of pancreatic cancer in Chinese men and women.. Methods: A prospective cohort analysis was done to examine the association between soft drink and juice consumption and the risk of pancreatic cancer in 60,524 participants of the Singapore Chinese Health Study with up to 14 years of follow-up. Information on consumption of soft drinks, juice, and other dietary items, as well as lifestyle and environmental exposures, was collected through in-person interviews at recruitment. Pancreatic cancer cases and deaths were ascertained by record linkage of the cohort database with records of population-based Singapore Cancer ...

Title: HLA and Non-HLA Genes in Ankylosing Spondylitis and Seronegative Spondyloarthritis in Asia. VOLUME: 4 ISSUE: 2. Author(s):Hwee Siew Howe. Affiliation:Department of Rheumatology,Allergy and Immunology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, 11 Jalan Tan Tock Seng, Singapore 308433.. Abstract: Genetic susceptibility to ankylosing spondylitis, the prototype of the seronegative spondyloarthropathies is strongly associated with the major histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27. However besides HLA-B27, there are other genes, both MHC and non-MHC, that predispose to susceptibility and severity of disease. Studies on the genetic epidemiology of these diseases in Asia have shown similar findings to those elsewhere; with most showing strong association of HLA-B27 with ankylosing spondylitis, no difference in HLA B27 subtypes between patients and controls, some association of IL-1 gene cluster, TNF and LMP polymorphisms with ankylosing spondylitis, association of HLADR8 with acute anterior uveitis, and no association ...

The Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) have been informed of a case of Zika virus infection. The patient is a 47-year-old female Malaysian who resides at Block 102 Aljunied Crescent and works in Singapore. As she had not travelled to Zika-affected areas recently, she was likely to have been infected in Singapore.. 2. The patient had developed fever, rash and conjunctivitis from 25 August. She visited a general practitioner (GP) on 26 August and was referred to the Communicable Diseases Centre (CDC) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where she was tested positive for Zika on 27 August. She has since been hospitalised for observation at the CDC. The patient is currently well and recovering.. 3. With the presence of Zika in our region and the volume of travel by Singaporeans as well as tourists, it is inevitable that there will be imported cases of Zika into Singapore. There is also risk of subsequent local transmission, as the Aedes mosquito vector is present here. While MOH ...
Aims: To describe the prevalence and causes of decreased visual acuity (VA) in Singaporean Chinese children. Methods: A population-based survey of Singaporean Chinese children aged 6 to 72 months was conducted. Participants underwent an orthoptic evaluation, cycloplegic refraction and biometric measurements. A sub-group of children aged 30 to 72 months with presenting logMAR VA were included in this analysis. Retesting was performed on the same day or another day by predefined criteria with best refractive correction. Decreased VA was defined as worse than 20/50 (0.4 logMAR) for ages 30 to 47 months and worse than 20/40 (0.3 logMAR) for ages 48 to 72 months. Results: The study examined 3009 children (participation rate 72.3%) of which 2017 children aged 30 to 72 months were eligible for VA testing and completed in 1684 (83.5%). In children aged 30-47 months, the prevalence of decreased presenting VA was 2.1%, and in children 48-72 months, it was 2.05%, with no significant difference between boys ...

Does a Flu Vaccine Protect The Elderly for Long Enough? The flu vaccine is less protective for elderly patients, and just how long the protection lasts is unclear. Does it last beyond a typical seasonal epidemic? Thats important to know for patients in climates where the virus activity is frequent, even year-round, say researchers from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (Singapore), National University of Singapore, and Nagasaki University.

SINGAPORE: A more precise surgery method is now available to those suffering from stomach cancer. Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) has become the first in Southeast Asia to perform the robotic gastrectomy procedure. Stomach cancer is the fifth most common cancer in Singapore, and doctors say that stomach cancer is largely triggered by poor lifestyle choices, such as overeating or eating too much barbequed food. Only a small percentage is caused by genetic factors. 75-year-old Loh Ah Mye was diagnosed with stage one stomach cancer last month. But due to her age, doctors found it risky for her to go through the usual key hole surgery to remove cancer cells. She opted to undergo the robotic gastrectomy procedure, and became the first person in Southeast Asia to do so. The procedure is commonly performed in Korea and Japan, where the incidence of stomach cancer is high. Madam Loh... Full article: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews... ...
A severe bed crunch at Singapores public hospitals has forced several of them into taking some extraordinary measures.. Changi General Hospital (CGH), which has 800 beds, started housing patients waiting for beds in a large air-conditioned tent this week.. The 1,200-bed Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), meanwhile, has been forced to set up 49 beds along the corridors of its wards to cope with the demand.. Together with Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), they have also resorted to sending patients to Alexandra Hospital, one of the few public hospitals here with spare beds.. Having taken in more than 900 patients from other hospitals between last September and December, it continues to admit around 11 such patients each day.. Dr Lee Chien Earn, CGHs chief executive officer, told The Straits Times: "Our bed occupancy rate has crossed 100 per cent for certain periods over the past month and some patients have waited more than 24 hours for an inpatient bed.". This is despite CGH already renting a ward ...
We work closely with our colleagues in the Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Radiology departments to provide holistic multi-disciplinary care for our cancer patients. These include regular multi-disciplinary tumour board and uro-radiology case discussions for our patients.. In addition, we offer both open and minimally-invasive surgical options for all urological cancers. We were the first to perform radical perineal prostatectomy in Singapore in 1996 and also performed the first laparoscopic radical nephrectomy in the country in 2002 and the first laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in 2003. We launched our robotic surgery programme in 2010 and had completed 100 successful robotic surgeries by 2012. Today, our robotic radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy programmes are well established. We are also a referral centre for retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for men with testicular cancer. Finally, we regularly collaborate with our General Surgery colleagues and gynaecologists ...
This proportion appears to be very big, and it is," but its not clear how much virus is needed to actually spread flu, so the lower number is more reliable, he said.. Dr. David C. Lye reported on 70 patients treated at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. Using a very sensitive test to detect virus in the nose or throat, he found that 80 percent had it five days after symptoms began, and 40 percent seven days after. Some still harbored virus as long as 16 days later. How soon they started on antiviral medicines such as Tamiflu made a difference in how much virus was found, but not whether virus was present at all.. A third report came from Dr. Guillermo Ruiz-Palacios of the National Institutes of Medical Science and Nutrition in Mexico, where the first cases of swine flu were detected.. Infected people "shed the virus for a very, very long time," often for more than a week after the start of symptoms, he told the conference. This was especially true of obese people, and patients who started on ...
Only a minority of probable SARS cases caused transmission. We assess if any epidemiological or clinical factors in SARS index patients were associated with increased probability of transmission. We used epidemiological and clinical data on probable SARS patients admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Using a case-control approach, index patients who had probable SARS who subsequently transmitted the disease to at least one other patient were analysed as cases against patients with no transmission as controls, using multivariate logistic regression analysis. 98 index patients were available for analysis (22 with transmission, 76 with no transmission). Covariates positively associated with transmission in univariate analysis at p | 0.05 included delay to isolation (Day 7 of illness or later), admission to a non-isolation facility, pre-existing chronic respiratory disease and immunosuppressive disease, need for oxygen, shortness of breath, vomiting, and higher lactate dehydrogenase levels and higher

By the time patients are referred to Dr Ho, they are usually su ering from hearing loss that is bad enough to cause disability.. This is why it is important for everyone, especially seniors aged 60 and above, to go for regular health screenings. Project Silver Screen, which is a collaboration between Ministry of Health and Temasek Foundation, is a screening programme that targets this group. These screenings are held at residents committee centres, and community centres and clubs around the island to ensure the seniors eyes, ears and mouth are in good health.. While most types of hearing loss are not reversible, they can be managed by using hearing aids. Dr Ho explains that hearing is a sophisticated function of the body. The hearing process involves many parts of the ear working together to convert sound waves into electrical signals the brain understands and interprets as sounds.. Patients should give themselves time to get used to the hearing aids, and allow the brain to relearn what sounds ...
Dear Reader,. The following is my true life experience as a Leukemia Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia patient.. I was diagnosed with Leukemia All on 20th February 2008 at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. I went to the A&E as I had been having severe headache at the back of my head for about 3 weeks. And on the 20th Feb, I had blurred right eye vision. My wife forced me to go immediately to A&E to have it checked. I actually was reluctant to go and quarreled with her before leaving home to TTSH.. In TTSH, my heart was scanned and later was referred to the Eye Doctor, Dr James Ng from TTSH Ophthalmology Department. He was a very concerned doctor. After reviewing me, he did a lot of test on my eyes and found many Rock Spots on both eyes. I seriously had no idea what they were. Dr James actually went into the internet to show me the actual pictures which were actually internal bleeding. He then continued to with the diagnosing. He even activated his consultant whom activated her senior consultant who where there ...
Eyelid cancer is a common problem in the West, representing about 10% of cancers in the head and neck region.7 About 5% to 9.2% of all skin cancers arise in the eyelid and cancers in this location account for at least 11% of all mortalities from skin malignancies.8 In Singapore, 1.9% of all melanomas and 8.5% of all non-melanoma cancers of the skin, recorded from 1968 to 1992, arise in the eyelid.1 The cases described covers patients seen in all hospitals and clinics in Singapore. Cases recorded by the Singapore Cancer Registry are filed according to the National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) number. This is a unique number for each resident in Singapore, as a result, the possibility of duplicate recording is eliminated. These cases of cancer are sourced with all death records (on computer tape), from all hospital discharge summaries and from all pathology reports. This system ensures all cases of cancer seen in Singapore are recorded, hence the validity of data in this report.. The average ...
Some Sikhs in Singapore are immigrants from India (mainly from the Punjab region in India). Others are the descendants of Sikh prisoners from British India who were sent to Singapore by the British Army for protesting, attacking or killing British Soldiers, attacks; assaults; and vandalism of British buildings and property. They lived in British prisons in Singapore. Sikh migration to Singapore was popularised by the demand of Sikh police officers and guards in British colonial Malaya. A substantial amount of Sikhs in Singapore are also descendants of Indian Sikh Businessmen who immigrated to Singapore. Most Sikhs today are from the Jat community.. ...
This study aimed to explore how community-dwelling Singaporean Chinese adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus experience hypoglycaemia. A qualitative interpretive research design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants from a Singaporean diabetes specialist outpatient clinic, transcribed verbatim and analysed using qualitative manual thematic analysis. Eight major themes emerged: experiencing symptoms, knowing hypoglycaemia is manageable, using acute measures, using preventative strategies; applying knowledge, identifying causes of hypoglycaemia, forming relationships and working with health-care professionals. Participants underestimated the impact of hypoglycaemia mainly due to their experiencing mild and infrequent episodes, and knowledge deficits. Health-care professionals roles were limited to information providers, and they were perceived as detached and impersonal. The implications are that health-care professionals need to provide more ...

In the year 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles arrived and settled the southern portion of Singapore for the British East Indian Company. By 1824, the entire island fell under British rule, and by 1826, Singapore became part of the British India Strait Settlements. More than 80,000 people lived within the region by 1870, as the rubber plantation attracted thousands of Chinese, Indian and Malay workers. A statue of Sir Stamford Raffles is located in downtown Riverside.. In the early 1940s, Singapore was astonishingly and rapidly occupied by Japanese Imperial Forces, which is still the worst military loss for Britain in history. Singapore was believed to be impregnable, yet the Japanese army, outnumbered three to one, managed to expel the British in only seven days. Between 1942 and 1945, tens of thousands of locals and Allied soldiers died at the hands of the brutal Japanese rulers. Following their surrender in 1945, Britain regained control of Singapore.. The first political elections took place ...
Purpose: : To investigate the relationship between retinal vascular caliber and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: : A population based, cross-sectional study of 3,280 (78.7% response rate) Malay Singaporean adults aged 40-80 years. Of these, 3,019 (98%) had fundus photographs with sufficient quality for assessing both retinal vessel caliber and AMD. Retinal vessel caliber was measured using a computer-based technique and summarized. AMD grading was performed at the Centre for Vision Research, University of Sydney, using a modification of the Wisconsin AMD Grading System. Odds ratio (OR) for association between retinal vessel caliber and AMD was estimated per eye, using generalized estimating equation logistic models. Results: : Early and late AMD was present in 152 (5.0%) and 19 (0.6%) in this study subjects. The mean arteriolar caliber in eyes without AMD, with early and late AMD was 139.6µm, 139.0µm and 137.5µm, respectively. The mean venular caliber in eyes without AMD, with ...
