The discovery of auxinic herbicides (e.g., 2,4-D, Dicamba, Picloram) for selective control of broad-leaf weeds in cereal crops revolutionized modern agriculture. These herbicides are inexpensive and do not generally have prolonged residual activity in soil. Although cultivated species of Brassicaceae (e.g., radish and other vegetables) are susceptible to auxinic herbicides, some biotypes of wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis, 2n=18) were found to be highly resistant to Picloram and Dicamba. Inter-generic hybrids between wild mustard and radish (Raphanus sativus, 2n=18) were produced by traditional breeding coupled with in vitro embryo rescue/ovule culture. To increase frequency of embryo regeneration and hybrid plant production, several hundred reciprocal crosses were performed between these species. Upon altering cultural conditions and media composition, a high frequency of embryo regeneration and hybrid plant establishment was achieved. A protocol was also optimized for in vitro clonal ...

In the seedlings of Sinapis alba, the lag-phase between the application of 5-FUDR and the beginning of the inhibition of elongation growth and the inhibition of DNA-synthesis has been studied. The elongation was retarded after 7 h, and then, depending on the concentration of the FUDR, was completely stopped. In the cotyledons the DNA-synthesis was strongly reduced after about 50 minutes, and in the hypocotyls a lag-phase of less than 30 minutes was observed. With the addition of thymidine the DNA-synthesis was immediately resumed, while the growth began with a lag-phase of 5-7 h. In every case the change in the DNA-synthesis preceded the change in the elongation growth. The inhibition of elongation growth could, therefore, be the consequence of inhibition of DNA-synthesis.
Abstract. We employ new global space-based measurements of atmospheric methanol from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) with the adjoint of the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model to quantify terrestrial emissions of methanol to the atmosphere. Biogenic methanol emissions in the model are based on version 2.1 of the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGANv2.1), using leaf area data from NASAs Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and GEOS-5 assimilated meteorological fields. We first carry out a pseudo observation test to validate the overall approach, and find that the TES sampling density is sufficient to accurately quantify regional- to continental-scale methanol emissions using this method. A global inversion of two years of TES data yields an optimized annual global surface flux of 122 Tg yr−1 (including biogenic, pyrogenic, and anthropogenic sources), an increase of 60% from the a priori global flux of 76 Tg yr−1. Global terrestrial ...

Background and Aims. Brassica rapa and B. oleracea are the progenitors of oilseed rape B. napus. The addition of each chromosome of B. oleracea to the chromosome complement of B. rapa results in a series of monosomic alien addition lines (MAALs). Analysis of MAALs determines which B. oleracea chromosomes carry genes controlling specific phenotypic traits, such as seed colour. Yellow-seeded oilseed rape is a desirable breeding goal both for food and livestock feed end-uses that relate to oil, protein and fibre contents. The aims of this study included developing a missing MAAL to complement an available series, for studies on seed colour control, chromosome homoeology and assignment of linkage groups to B. oleracea chromosomes.. Methods. A new batch of B. rapa-B. oleracea aneuploids was produced to generate the missing MAAL. Seed colour and other plant morphological features relevant to differentiation of MAALs were recorded. For chromosome characterization, Snows carmine, fluorescence in situ ...

WARNING: This post is bound to be controversial. I know that we generally tell people to shock their pools with chlorine if they have algae and we tell them to dilute the water to lower high Cyanuric Acid (CYA) levels first before doing such shocking. However, there are some cases where there might be more expedient approaches that would be worthwhile. Specifically, if one gets yellow/mustard algae then higher CYA levels make the required chlorine levels quite high for getting rid of such

CABBAGE. The parent form of the variety of culinary and fodder vegetables included under this head is generally supposed to be the wild or sea cabbage (Brassica oleracea), a plant found near the sea coast of various parts of England and continental Europe, although Alphonse de Candolle considered it to be really descended from the two or three allied species which are yet found growing wild on the Mediterranean coast. In any case the cultivated varieties have departed very widely from the original type, and they present very marked and striking dissimilarities among themselves. The wild cabbage is a comparatively insignificant plant, growing from 1 to 2 ft. high, in appearance very similar to the corn mustard or charlock (Sinapis arvensis), but differing from it in having smooth leaves. The wild plant has fleshy, shining, waved and lobed leaves (the uppermost being undivided but toothed), large yellow flowers, elongated seed-pod, and seeds with conduplicate cotyledons. Notwithstanding the fact ...
There is evidence that methanol is consumed by Methylobacterium and contributes to the epiphytic fitness of the organism. However, in addition to the peak of methanol emission in the morning, Methylobacterium should adapt its metabolism to use additional carbon sources during the rest of the day when methanol emission is low or during the night when stomata are closed and methanol is consequently no longer available. PPFMs are aerobic, Gram-negative bacteria and, although they are able to grow on a wide range of multicarbon substrates, they are characterized by the capability to grow on one-carbon compounds such as formate, formaldehyde, and methanol as their sole carbon and energy source. They are easily isolated on a methanol based mineral medium. Recently published data suggest that the degree of the plant-Methylobacterium association varies from strong, or symbiotic to loose, or epiphytic, a range that also includes the intermediate endophytic association. However, the overall nature of ...

Moreover, the conversion of oestrogen is facilitated with the help of an enzyme, known as aromatase. Arimidex suppresses the activity of this enzyme, and in this way it helps to control the level of oestrogen in blood. The effectiveness of Arimidex can be improved by taking the regular and right dosage of the drug. The effective dosage of the drug is 0.. If you missed a dose, then take it within 12 hours. If 12 hours have passed then do not take two doses, but skip it and wait for the next time to take it. Arimidex is considered good for minimising oestrogen levels as well. The knowledge of plants interactions is used for their better protection and cultivation. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of alcoholic extracts from the leaves of the common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) on selected physiological parameters of plants of white mustard (Sinapis alba Barka). The seeds germination, the growth, the fresh and dry masses of plants grown from seeds and germinated on the sunflower extracts and plants watered by H. annuus extracts during the growth phase were studied. In the growth phase, the fresh masses of all organs were increased on 5 % extract, however significantly decreased on 10 % extract. The dry mass of S. alba was not significantly changed. In the germination phase, much less changes of these parameters were revealed. In general, extracts from H. annuus leaves inhibited germination of S. alba seeds, but stimulated growth of plants in case of application of 5 % concentrations during the germination phase and inhibited their growth in case of

Green manure from Brassica plants reduced the micro-organisms in the soil due to biocidal effect. Biofumigation with glucosinolates from Brassica juncea, Sinapis alba and Eruca sativa only partially influenced the mycorrhizal fungi of the strawberry cv. Marmolada . In the field trial the differences in mycorrhizal parameters were not statistically significant between treatments (Brassica juncea, Sinapis alba, Eruca sativa, dazomet, control). The highest frequency of roots with mycorrhizal fungi (F) was observed in the chemical treatment with dazomet (50.3%). In the control, F was 49.2% and it was the lowest in the B. juncea treatment (43.4%). In pot trials, the average F was found in B. juncea, 57.9%, followed by S. alba, 54.9%, E. sativa, 66.8%, dazomet, 2.9% and control, 60.8%. The average intensity of fungi infection (M) was found in B. juncea, 7.4%, then in S. alba, 9.8%, E. sativa, 7.5%, dazomet, 0.0%, and control, 7.1%. The growth of weeds differed a great deal between the trials. In the ...
The appropriate timing of bolting and flowering is pivotal for reproductive success in Brassicaceae crops including radish (Raphanus sativus L.). Although several flowering regulatory pathways had been described in some plant species, no study on genetic networks of bolting and flowering regulation was performed in radish. In this study, to generate dataset of radish unigene sequences for large-scale gene discovery and functional pathway identification, a cDNA library from mixed radish leaves at different developmental stages was subjected to high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). A total of 54.64 million clean reads and 111,167 contigs representing 53,642 unigenes were obtained from the radish leaf transcriptome. Among these, 50,385 unigenes were successfully annotated by BLAST searching against the public protein databases. Functional classification and annotation indicated that 42,903 and 15,382 unique sequences were assigned to 55 GO terms and 25 COG categories, respectively. KEGG pathway

The present study illustrates the effect of 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) on morphological and biochemical parameters in radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seedlings grown under nickel (Ni) ion stress. The radish seeds pre-soaked in different concentrations of 24-EBL were sown in petridishes containing various concentrations of heavy metal (Ni).Observations were made on root/shoot length, fresh biomass, activities of antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione reductase), lipid peroxidation, proline and protein content in 7-day-old Ni-stressed radish seedlings. Results indicate that seeds presoaked with 24-EBL reduced the impact of Ni-stress which was evident by assessing the morphological parameters, protein content and antioxidant enzyme activities. It was also observed that 24-EBL reduced the toxicity of heavy metal by influencing proline and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. The
The aphid Brevicoryne brassicae is a specialist feeding on Brassicaceae plants. The insect has an intricate defence system involving a beta-D-thioglucosidase (myrosinase) that hydrolyses glucosinolates sequestered from the host plant into volatile isothiocyanates. These isothiocyanates act synergistically with the pheromone E-beta-farnesene to form an alarm system when the aphid is predated. In order to investigate the enzymatic characteristics of the aphid myrosinase and its three-dimensional structure, milligram amounts of pure recombinant aphid myrosinase were obtained from Echerichia coli. The recombinant enzyme had similar physiochemical properties to the native enzyme. The global structure is very similar to Sinapis alba myrosinase and plant beta-O-glucosidases. Aphid myrosinase has two catalytic glutamic acid residues positioned as in plant beta-O-glucosidases, and it is not obvious why this unusual enzyme hydrolyses glucosinolates, the common substrates of plant myrosinases which are ...

Been gathering the ingredients for Chicago style hot dogs, got some serrano peppers today, couldnt find the specific sport peppers but figure Im in the ball park, and some celery salt. Tried the celery salt on some tuna salad at lunch. Good stuff. Of course I recognized the taste just never knew that was celery seasoning. Now, gotta find some good poppy seed buns or at least something better than the air bubbles held together with edible glue that most hot dog buns are made from. Got the good yellow mustard, the brite green relish, sweet onions, and some nice dill spears. My mouth is watering. [:p]
Nowadays, it is a rare treat to see the word coddies on a menu, but not so long ago this uniquely Baltimore food was as close as your corner store, malt shop or confectionery. Coddies are not to be confused with cod cakes. While recipes for coddies vary, a coddie can be best described as a hand-formed, gently seasoned mashed-potato-and-cracker mixture that is always deep-fried and traditionally served between two saltine crackers topped with yellow mustard. It contains little or no cod. Served at room temperature, today's coddies are made slightly larger than in the past, hanging over the sides of the saltines by one-half inch all around.

The process of human ageing is significantly dependent upon events which are currently shaping humanity. One such event is the seemingly inexorable progress of technology, and specifically, digital communications technology. Technology and biology are tightly interconnected, and this has a direct relevance on how our own ageing mechanisms are evolving and adapting to the change. One way technology may affect biological ageing is based on the concept of information exposure which acts as a hormetic stimulus and up-regulates neuronal stress response pathways. In this way, neurons become increasingly more likely to acquire repair resources and function for longer, with a consequent overall improvement in healthy lifespan. At the same time, germline repair mechanisms may need to be downgraded in order to accommodate a tradeoff: a corresponding escalation of repairs in neurons. In this Opinion paper I discuss how a meaningful and intentional integration with technology, which hormetically challenges ...

In the location of pharmacology, efficacy represents the particular strength of a medicine, determined in units named milligrams. In the context of dose in the clinical globe, a potency level of 100 is considered to be the absolute minimum effective dosage. Nonetheless, also this level is up for discussion. Some current medical studies have recommended that in some cases, dosages past the optimum strength are actually either harmful or even useless. The strength of a medicine can likewise be actually affected by storage disorders. This write-up is going to explain exactly how strength is established as well as the elements that impact its own size.. On earth of health care chemical make up, efficacy is actually usually determined as the attention of a non-bacterial chemical drug that makes up a solitary complex substance when evaluated making use of quality slopes. The non-bacterial attribute of the majority of drugs means that they can being actually ionized. In this particular method, specific ...
In the REMEDEE trial, the Combo stent was found to be noninferior to the PES with respect to 9-month angiographic in-stent LLL and thereby met its primary endpoint. The observed in-stent LLL of 0.39 mm for the Combo stent was greater than that reported for conventional SES, where Cypher (Cordis, Miami Lakes, Florida) LLL values have been reported up to 0.24 mm, including diabetic patients (13-15). These angiographic results are in line with the expected capture of circulating EPCs by the CD34 antibody, creating a fast and complete layer of cells leading to the covering of the stent struts. Experimental data have shown that the abluminal release of sirolimus by the Combo stent results in a similar effective dosage in the stented arterial wall, as with the omnidirectional release by the SES, yet with a drastically reduced release to the circulation (6).. Angiographic LLL has been used as a surrogate for DES efficacy in preventing angiographic restenosis and the need for repeat TLR (16,17). A ...
Like the grapefruit, carambola is considered to be a potent inhibitor of seven cytochrome P450 isoforms. These enzymes are significant in the first-pass elimination of many medicines, and, thus, the consumption of carambola or its juice in combination with certain prescription medications can significantly increase their effective dosage within the body. Research into grapefruit juice (its potent enzymes) for instance, identified a significant effect (requires change in dose or other side effects) on common medications when taken concurrently by the patient, including statins, which are commonly used to treat high cholesterol and cardiovascular illness, and benzodiazepines (a sedative tranquilizer drug family that includes diazepam). ...
