We offer three types of silk, all of which are perfect for making beautiful silk drape but each have slightly different characteristics. All of our Silks are 100% natural silk fabrics. They do not contain polyester or other fibers that are often woven into silk. When Polyester is woven into Silk it obviously reduces the purity of the silk and ultimately its value. On occasion we will offer a Silk / Linen Blend where fibers of silk and linen are blended together. These are fairly common fabrics and have some very unique qualities that many Designers like. Honeybee silk is composed of four fibrous proteins that, unlike other silks, are readily synthesized at full-length and high yield. The four silk genes have been conserved for over 150 million years in all investigated bee, ant and hornet species, implying a distinct functional role for each protein. However, the amino acid composition and molecular architecture of the proteins are similar, suggesting functional redundancy. In this study we compare materials generated from a single honeybee silk protein to materials containing all four recombinant proteins or to natural honeybee silk. We analyse solution conformation by dynamic light scattering and circular dichroism, solid state structure by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, and fiber tensile properties by stress-strain analysis. The surface energy of all silk materials is mostly determined by long range dispersive interactions such as van der Waals forces. All samples have amphoteric surfaces and the concentration of acidic groups increases after milling while the surfaces remain predominantly basic. Naturally spun silks generate fibres with unique properties, including strength, elasticity and biocompatibility. Here we describe a microfluidics-based strategy to spin liquid native silk, obtained directly from the silk gland of Bombyx mori silkworms, into micron-scale capsules with controllable geometry and variable levels of intermolecular β-sheet content in their protein shells. We demonstrate that such micrococoons can store internally the otherwise highly unstable liquid native silk for several months and without apparent effect on its functionality. We further demonstrate that these native silk micrococoons enable the effective encapsulation, storage and release of other aggregation-prone proteins, such as functional antibodies. Amyloid aggregation has been associated with numerous human pathological diseases. A recent study has demonstrated that silk fibroin intermittently endorses amyloidogenesis in vivo. In the current study, we explored the propensity of silk fibroin to undergo amyloid-like aggregation and its prevention using an optimized concoction of curcumin with β-cyclodextrin. Aggregation of silk fibroin resulted in the formation of fibrils with a diameter of ~3.2 nm. However, addition of the optimized concentration of curcumin and β-cyclodextrin to silk fibroin inhibited aggregation and preserved the random coil conformation even under aggregation inducing conditions, as demonstrated by CD and FTIR spectroscopy. Natural Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) fibers were modified with 2-methacryloyloxyethyl isocyanate (MOI) first for the introduction of vinyl groups. Then, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol was grafted onto the SF fibers via thiol-ene click chemistry using ultraviolet light. The formations of MOI-modified and PFDT-grafted SF fibers were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively.
