Silicone oil droplets have limited deposition on hair due to electrostatic repulsion with negative surface charge of hair substrates. Aiming to improve silicone deposition on hair substrates, surface properties of uniform-sized silicone oil droplets (produced by membrane emulsification) were modified using layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition. By using this method, silicone oil droplets were coated with large molecular weight polymers, i.e. quaternized chitosan and alginate, and low molecular weight compounds, i.e. diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and glycerol to obtain six alternate layers of different surface charges. It was found that the dispersion of coated silicone oil droplets of narrow size distribution exhibited much improved mechanical strength and increased viscosity against shear compared to uncoated droplets. BACKGROUND Silicone oil tamponade has been suggested in the treatment of persistent macular hole, but visual outcome is often poor. We describe two patients who underwent reoperation for persistent macular hole using heavy silicone oil (HSO) tamponade. METHODS Two patients who underwent vitrectomy, removal of the posterior vitreous cortex, peeling of the internal limiting membrane, and long-acting gas tamponade had persistent macular hole 3 months after surgery. The patients underwent reoperation using an HSO (Oxane Hd, Bausch & Lomb) as internal tamponade. This tamponade did not require postoperative posturing and was removed after 3 months. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was performed, and visual outcome was determined. RESULTS OCT images showed that the HSO bubble conformed well with the retinal surface in the foveal region. Closure of the macular hole was achieved in both patients. Visual acuity increased from 20/100 to 20/40 in Patient 1 and from 20/600 to 20/100 in Patient 2.

Two different reactive silicone oligomers, hydroxylpropyl terminated PDMS (PDMS-L) and 1-(2,3-dihydroxy-propoxy)propyl terminated PDMS (PDMS-B), were synthesized through hydrosilylation reaction under Karstedts catalyst. Using the reactive silicone oligomers, two different silicone-modified gel-coat series were prepared to investigate their thermal and mechanical properties as well as surface characteristics according to reactive silicone oligomer contents. In case of thermal stabilities and mechanical properties, the gel-coat series containing PDMS-B showed higher values than that of the gel-coat series containing the PDMS-L. The contact angle for the gel-coat containing both silicone oligomers/was increased with reactive silicone oligomer contents but there was similar surface tension between PDMS-L and PDMS-B.
