This paper describes F-based dry etching and resulting surface properties of biocompatible silicone elastomer. The etch rate of polysiloxane and surface morphology was found to be highly temperature dependent. An increase in temperature results in a significantly higher etch rate and a lower surface roughness. Possible mechanisms of the etching process and the roughness formation on an elastomer surface are discussed. The polysiloxane surface was proved to have hydrophobic characteristics both prior to and after plasma exposure. The results of the preliminary cytotoxicity study are very promising: cell viability on a raw and plasma treated polysiloxane was found to be very high and comparable to control. Due to the acceptable etch rate and absence of toxic contaminations, a F-containing plasma is considered an excellent method for microprocessing of silicone elastomers intended for biomedical applications. A one-part silicone elastomeric composition that is flowable or easily extruded is prepared by mixing a hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, a difunctional silane having two amido radicals, and an organic peroxide suitable for vulcanizing silicone rubber. A nonacidic filler is optional. After being put in place, the composition is exposed to moisture to activate a chain extension reaction that increases the molecular weight of the polydiorganosiloxane, to improve the physical properties of the cured silicone elastomer. After chain extension has taken place, the composition is heated to activate the organic peroxide, thereby crosslinking the composition into a silicone elastomer. The composition is useful as a potting and encapsulating material.

Silicone rubber when contaminated by dust has the ability to transfer the hydrophobicity through pollutants. Water on the polluted silicone rubber forms separate droplets. It is a unique advantage of this material. However, the pollution layer on silicone rubber absorbs moisture at high air humidity similar to the pollutants on the glass surface. Under high timidity conditions the surface conductivity on heavy polluted (ESDD and DDD in the range of 0,1 mg/cm2 ) silicone insulators increases to the value in the range a few uS. This leads to dry band formation, arcing and possible surface erosion. The surface conductivity on the silicone rubber contaminated a week earlier by NaCl without bentonite is very small, in the range of 0,1 uS. A method for applying a silicone rubber material to polyurethane is described wherein a previously processed polyurethane material can be strongly bonded to a silicone rubber material. The silicone rubber material is applied to the polyurethane in a solution and is preferably an acetoxyterminated silicone material, a halogen-terminated silicone material or a combination thereof. The polyurethane and the silicone rubber material are heated at a temperature above about 70 C. to bond the two materials together more strongly than would otherwise occur in the absence of heat.
METHODS: Room-temperature polymerised maxillo-facial silicone elastomers (N=48) (10 mm x 10 mm x 2 mm) processed at different durations [VerSilTal VST-30 (20 min), VST-50 (12h overnight), VST-50F (6h)] were studied. C. albicans was chosen as a model organism for this study. The specimens were randomly divided into two subgroups and incubated in either 1.5 ml simulated saliva or nasal secretion containing C. albicans (ATCC 60193, set to 0.5 OD, 540 nm in advance) for 2h. Candida assays and adherence assays were made by inoculating C. albicans into Mueller Hinton Broth, Fluka added 500 mmol sucrose overnight. PURPOSE To evaluate the uveal and capsular biocompatibility of hydrophilic acrylic, hydrophobic acrylic, and silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) in eyes with uveitis. SETTING Department of Ophthalmology, University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria. METHODS This prospective study comprised 72 eyes with uveitis and 68 control eyes having phacoemulsification and IOL implantation by 1 surgeon. Patients received 1 of the following IOLs: foldable hydrophilic acrylic (Hydroview, Bausch & Lomb), hydrophobic acrylic (AcrySof, Alcon), or silicone (CeeOn 911, Pharmacia). Postoperative evaluations were at 1, 3, and 7 days and 1, 3, and 6 months. Cell reaction was evaluated by specular microscopy of the anterior IOL surface and the anterior and posterior capsule reaction, by biomicroscopy. RESULTS Small round cell deposition was observed on all IOLs in the immediate postoperative period, especially in eyes with uveitis. This reaction decreased 3 to 6 months after surgery.
