Penumbral imaging is a powerful technique for imaging with penetrating radiation such as neutrons and hard x rays. The reconstructed image can be obtained by the deconvolution of the detected image. Usually a Wiener filter is used for the reconstruction. The limitation of the Wiener filter is that it will introduce a significant distortion when the detected image contains noise. On the other hand, heuristic methods can obtain clear reconstructed image from noisy penumbral images. However, it significantly takes computation time. In this Letter, we present an original method to extract the optical properties of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on silver surfaces. A two Youngs slit experiment combined with a leakage radiation microscope has been built. By correlating both imagery and coherence measurements on the same area, we are able to address the evolution of the SPP spatial coherence along its propagation. The interference pattern observed in Youngs double-slit experiment is intimately related to the statistical correlations of the waves emitted by the slits. As the waves in the slits become more correlated, the visibility of the interference pattern increases. Here, we experimentally modulate the statistical correlations between the optical fields emitted by a pair of slits in a metal film. The interaction between the slits is mediated by surface plasmon polaritons and can be tuned by the slit separation, which allows us to either increase or decrease the spatial coherence of the emerging fields relative to that of the incoming fields.. © 2016 Optical Society of America. PURPOSE: To investigate for the first time the feasibility of aortic four-dimensional (4D) flow at 7T, both contrast enhanced (CE) and non-CE. To quantify the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in aortic 4D flow as a function of field strength and CE with gadobenate dimeglumine (MultiHance). METHODS: Six healthy male volunteers were scanned at 1.5T, 3T, and 7T with both non-CE and CE acquisitions. Temporal SNR was calculated. Flip angle optimization for CE 4D flow was carried out using Bloch simulations that were validated against in vivo measurements. RESULTS: The 7T provided 2.2 times the SNR of 3T while 3T provided 1.7 times the SNR of 1.5T in non-CE acquisitions in the descending aorta. The SNR gains achieved by CE were 1.8-fold at 1.5T, 1.7-fold at 3T, and 1.4-fold at 7T, respectively. The latest progress on developing automatic IQA methods that can predict subjective quality of visual signals is exhilarating. For example, a handful of objective IQA measures have been shown to significantly and consistently outperform the widely adopted mean squared error (MSE) and peak signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) in terms of correlations with subjective quality evaluations [1].
To develop an advanced muscle-computer interface (MCI) based on surface electromyo- graphy (EMG) signal, the amplitude estimations of muscle activities, i.e., root mean square (RMS) and mean absolute value (MAV) are widely used as a convenient and accurate input for a recognition system. Their classification performance is comparable to advanced and high computational time-scale methods, i.e., the wavelet transform. However, the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) performance of RMS and MAV depends on a probability density function (PDF) of EMG signals, i.e., Gaussian or Laplacian. The PDF of upper-limb motions associated with EMG signals is still not clear, especially for dynamic muscle contraction. In this paper, the EMG PDF is investigated based on surface EMG recorded during finger, hand, wrist and forearm motions. A ventilation denoising device that includes at least one ventilation module disposed with at least two air ducts inside, the air ducts are communicated end-to-end to form a circuitous air duct. The ventilation module is provided with a first ventilation opening communicated with one end of the air duct, and a second ventilation opening communicated with the other end of the air duct. Also disclosed is a ventilation denoising system equipped with the above mentioned ventilation denoising device. When the number of users is finite, the performance improvement of the orthogonal random beamforming (ORBF) scheme is limited in high signal-to-noise ratio regions. In this paper, to improve the performance of the ORBF scheme, the user set and transmit power allocation are jointly determined to maximize sum rate under the total transmit power constraint. First, the transmit power allocation problem is expressed as a function of a given user set. Based on this expression, the optimal user set with the maximum sum rate is determined. The suboptimal procedure is also presented to reduce the computational complexity, which separates the user set selection procedure and transmit power allocation procedure.

I dont think it is fair to say that they went looking for data in hot areas - there are additional grid cells filled in in colder areas too. It is not interpolation, but the use of more observations. However, given the obvious spatial coherence of anomalies, interpolation would be an obvious approach to take, and Im rather surprised they havent yet done this. They already average over 5x5 degree grid boxes, which relies on the same principle, only in a less precise and justifiable manner. There have been more accurate and sophisticated methods out there for decades. OTOH they may view bias correction and inhomogeneity as more of a priority than spatial averaging. The global mean is a bit of a byproduct that most scientists dont even use - direct comparison of the spatial pattern is more common and informative. ...

We emphasize the importance of a high signal-to-noise ratio in the Raman spectra for detecting weak effects evoked by the modification of compounds, accommodation of interstitial atoms and other structural defects. Vibrations of the icosahedra, occurring in all the spectra, are interpreted using the description of modes in a-rhombohedral boron by Beckel et al. We show that kernel-based quadrature rules for computing integrals are a special case of random feature expansions for positive definite kernels for a particular decomposition that always exists for such kernels. We provide a theoretical analysis of the number of required samples for a given approximation error, leading to both upper and lower bounds that are based solely on the eigenvalues of the associated integral operator and match up to logarithmic terms. In particular, we show that the upper bound may be obtained from independent and identically distributed samples from a known non-uniform distribution, while the lower bound if valid for any set of points. Applying our results to kernel-based quadrature, while our results are fairly general, we recover known upper and lower bounds for the special cases of Sobolev spaces. We propose an algorithm for 3-D multiview deblurring using spatially variant point spread functions (PSFs). The algorithm is applied to multiview reconstruction of volumetric microscopy images. It includes registration and estimation of the PSFs using irregularly placed point markers (beads). We formulate multiview deblurring as an energy minimization problem subject to L1-regularization. Optimization is based on the regularized Lucy-Richardson algorithm, which we extend to deal with our more general model. The model parameters are chosen in a profound way by optimizing them on a realistic training set. We quantitatively and qualitatively compare with existing methods and show that our method provides better signal-to-noise ratio and increases the resolution of the reconstructed images. ...

Advances in data-processing technology mean that improvements in image accuracy, resolution, signal-to-noise ratio and amplitude fidelity can be made even on conventional datasets acquired and processed within the last few years. Following the this strategy, we recently finished a 3D PSDM re-processing project in the UK North Sea. The survey area comprises 6 different legacy surveys from 3 vendors.
