We show that perceptual sensitivity to visual stimuli can be modulated by matches between the contents of working memory (WM) and stimuli in the visual field. Observers were presented with an object cue (to hold in WM or to merely attend) and subsequently had to identify a brief target presented within a colored shape. The cue could be re-presented in the display, where it surrounded either the target (on valid trials) or a distractor (on invalid trials). Perceptual identification of the target, as indexed by A, was enhanced on valid relative to invalid trials but only when the cue was kept in WM. There was minimal effect of the cue when it was merely attended and not kept in WM. Verbal cues were as effective as visual cues at modulating perceptual identification, and the effects were independent of the effects of target saliency. Matches to the contents of WM influenced perceptual sensitivity even under conditions that minimized competition for selecting the target. WM cues were also effective when
This thesis presents three procedures to detect Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. DDoS attacks are known as one of the most expensive and destructive Internet threats. Assuming network tra c is a marked Poisson process, two parametric detection models are developed. The arrival of packet ows is modeled as Poisson process with cluster sizes that follows a mixture of discrete and heavy tailed distributions. Both detection systems monitor the percentage of unknown source IP addresses. The rst detection model is formulated as a xed sample size binary hypothesis testing. The decision making is based on the Neyman-Pearson criteria. The second parametric model is a sequential probability ratio test where the sample size is a random variable. Acceptance and rejection boundaries are deduced based on Walds Fundamental Identity. Given that parametric distributions may fail to capture the complex and dynamic nature of the Internet, a third non-parametric detection model is proposed. In addition ...

Neurons adapt their electrophysiological properties to maintain stable levels of electrical excitability when faced with a constantly changing environment. We find that exposing freely swimming Xenopus tadpoles to 4-5 hr of persistent visual stimulation increases the intrinsic excitability of optic tectal neurons. This increase is correlated with enhanced voltage-gated Na+ currents. The same visual stimulation protocol also induces a polyamine synthesis-dependent reduction in Ca2+-permeable AMPAR-mediated synaptic drive, suggesting that the increased excitability may compensate for this reduction. Accordingly, the change in excitability was prevented by blocking polyamine synthesis during visual stimulation and was rescued when Ca2+-permeable AMPAR-mediated transmission was selectively reduced. The changes in excitability also rendered tectal cells more responsive to synaptic burst stimuli, improving visual stimulus detection. The synaptic and intrinsic adaptations function together to keep tectal
A patient position monitoring apparatus and method includes an article configured to be worn by a patient. The article includes a plurality of resonators with each resonator responsive to a wireless excitation signal for causing the unique change in the excitation signal or for outputting a unique wireless response signal. The resonators are stimulated with a first wireless excitation signal when the article is being worn by a patient. The unique change in the excitation signal and /or the unique response signal of each resonator responding to the first excitation signal is determined. From the thus detected response, a signal strength of the unique change in the excitation signal and/or the unique response signal for each responding resonator is determined. From the thus determined signal strengths, the relative locations of the responding resonators with respect to each other can be determined.

This chapter introduces a methodology for signal detection and reconstruction of irregular spatiotemporal oscillatory signals-the multiple-taper spectrum estimation method (MTM)-singular-value decomposition (SVD) methodology. This methodology is offered as an alternative technique which avoids most of the problems encountered in traditional techniques and provides an efficient exploratory method for climate signal detection. The associated signal-detection parameter-the local fractional variance spectrum (LFV) spectrum-yields the correct null distribution for a very general class of spatiotemporal climate noise processes ...

Model Type: protein homolog model. Model Definition: The protein homolog model is an AMR detection model. Protein homolog models detect a protein sequence based on its similarity to a curated reference sequence. A protein homolog model has only one parameter: a curated BLASTP bitscore cutoff for determining the strength of a match. Protein homolog model matches to reference sequences are categorized on three criteria: perfect, strict and loose. A perfect match is 100% identical to the reference sequence along its entire length; a strict match is not identical but the bitscore of the matched sequence is greater than the curated BLASTP bitscore cutoff. Loose matches are other sequences with a match bitscore less than the curated BLASTP bitscore.. Bit-score Cut-off (blastP): 300 ...

Pain is normally a transitory unpleasant sensation subsequent to a noxious or potentially injurious stimulus, acting as a warning system for tissue protection against injuries. It is a complex experience that involves not only the transduction of noxious environmental stimuli, but also cognitive and emotional processing by the brain [1,2]. Some circumstances, such as inflammatory or neuropathic conditions, may lead to alterations of the pain pathway, leading to hypersensitivity, and the pain becomes chronic and debilitating. Indeed, hypersensitivity to heat, cold and mechanical stimuli are well documented symptoms of inflammatory and neuropathic pain [2,3]. Several molecules and signaling pathways that contribute for noxious stimuli detection have already been characterized [1]. Among them, the transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels appear to be molecular gateways in the sensory system [4]. In the field of pain, the subset of thermo-TRPs, mainly TRPV1 andTRPA1, seems to be important for ...

Post-marketing detection and surveillance of potential safety hazards are crucial tasks in pharmacovigilance. To uncover such safety risks, a wide set of techniques has been developed for spontaneous reporting data and, more recently, for longitudinal data. This paper gives a broad overview of the signal detection process and introduces some types of data sources typically used. The most commonly applied signal detection algorithms are presented, covering simple frequentistic methods like the proportional reporting rate or the reporting odds ratio, more advanced Bayesian techniques for spontaneous and longitudinal data, e.g., the Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network or the Multi-item Gamma-Poisson Shrinker and methods developed for longitudinal data only, like the IC temporal pattern detection. Additionally, the problem of adjustment for underlying confounding is discussed and the most common strategies to automatically identify false-positive signals are addressed. We recorded the responses of single neurons in extrastriate area MST while rhesus monkeys discriminated the direction of motion in a set of stochastic visual displays. By varying systematically the strength of a coherent motion signal within the visual display, we were able to measure simultaneously the monkeys psychophysical thresholds for direction discrimination and the responses of single neurons to the same motion signals. Neuronal thresholds for reliably signaling the direction of motion in the visual display were calculated from the measured responses using a method based in signal detection theory. Neurons in MST were exquisitely sensitive to motion signals in the display, having thresholds for discriminating the direction of coherent motion that were, on average, equal to the psychophysical thresholds of the monkeys. For many MST neurons, the intensity of the response was correlated with the monkeys psychophysical judgements for repeated presentations of a given near-threshold ...
A key challenge in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is the detection of activation areas in the brain. We introduce a new method of M R I signal detection, using an approach termed the Periodicity Transform. The technique is based on temporal data analysis. A search for periodicity is camed out in the tMRI time series data. The method is applicable to block design experiments. In the block paradigm, the stimulus period is known and it is possible to use this information for searching periodicities in the time series data. We present the results for the periodicity detection in the time series of the simulated phantom as well as clinical fMR1 data from the finger tapping experiment. No assumptions have been made about the amplitude and frequency of the activation signal. The algorithm extracts arbitrary harmonics at the periodicity defined by thc stimulus function ...
Over the last years recurrence plots (RPs)and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA)have become quite popular in various branches of science. One key problem in applying RPs and RQA is the selection of suitable parameters for the data under investigation. Whereas various well-established methods for the selection of embedding parameters exists, the question of choosing an appropriate threshold has not yet been answered satisfactorily. The recommendations found in the literature are rather rules of thumb than actual guidelines. In this paper we address the issue of threshold selection in RP/RQA. The core criterion for choosing a threshold is the power in signal detection that threshold yields. We will validate our approach by applying it to model as well as real-life data.

The application of a Gaussian filter to the three dimensional images of the fMRI scan as implemented in SPM has mainly two effects. Firstly, if activation has spatial extent adjacent voxel will contain similar time courses and thus the averaging lowers the noise level while conserving the signal. Secondly, it increases the smoothness of the random t-field and thus lowers the number of independent tests as well as the corresponding global thresholds. However, with Gaussian smoothing we can achieve a reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio at the cost of a possible bias at the border of the activated regions only. This leads to an increased power of the tests and therefore more sensitivity and specificity of signal detection in all voxel except in a neighborhood of the border of the region. The size of this neighborhood depends on the amount of smoothing that is applied. In this neighborhood specificity of signal detection may decrease. The optimal amount of smoothing depends on both signal ...
This work proposed a novel strategy to fabricate highly-stable NO2 sensor based on a pyrochlore-phase Gd2Zr2O7 oxygen conductor. The incorporation of alkaline-earth metals distinctly enhances the sensing performance of the Gd2Zr2O7 based sensors. The excellent sensor based on Gd1.95Ca0.05Zr2O7+δ exhibits rapid response-recovery characteristics with the maximum response current value (ΔI = 6.4 μA), extremely short 90% responce (3 s) and 90% recovery (35 s) time towards 500 ppm NO2 at 500 °C, which is better than that of commercial YSZ under the same condition. The ΔI value towards NO2 is much higher than those towards other gases (CH4, C3H6, C3H8, CO, NO, SO2, C2H4, CO2 and C2H6), exhibiting excellent selectivity for detecting NO2. The response signal basically maintains a stable value of 6.4 μA after the sensors was stored for half a month and a month. Receptor signaling relays on intracellular events amplified by secondary and tertiary messenger molecules. In cardiomyocytes and smooth muscle cells, cyclic AMP (cAMP) and subsequent calcium (Ca2+) fluxes are the best characterized receptor-regulated signaling events. However, most of receptors able to modify contractility and other intracellular responses signal through a variety of other messengers, and whether these signaling events are interconnected has long remained unclear. For example, the PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase) pathway connected to the production of the lipid second messenger PIP3/PtdIns(3,4,5)P3 (phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate) is potentially involved in metabolic regulation, activation of hypertrophy, and survival pathways. Recent studies, highlighted in this review, started to interconnect PI3K pathway activation to Ca2+ signaling. This interdependency, by balancing contractility with metabolic control, is crucial for cells of the cardiovascular system and is ...

A software programmable device means such as a microprocessor discriminates between evoked response signals and post-pace polarization signals sensed by an implantable medical device. The polarity of the positive or negative change in voltage in respect of time (or dv/dt) of the waveform incident on the lead electrodes is monitored during a short period of time immediately following a paced event. It has been discovered that the post-pace polarization signal exhibits a relatively constant polarity during the capture detect window, and that the evoked response signal may cause the polarity of post-pace polarization signal to reverse during the capture detect window . The sign of the post-pace polarization polarity, either positive or negative, is determined by the design of the specific output circuitry. The evoked response signal may reverse the polarity of the sensed signal in either case, from positive to negative or from negative to positive, during the time window of interest. In another embodiment
It is widely accepted that action and perception in humans functionally interact on multiple levels. Moreover, areas originally suggested to be predominantly motor-related, as the cerebellum, are also involved in action observation. However, as yet, few studies provided unequivocal evidence that the cerebellum is involved in the action perception coupling (APC), specifically in the integration of motor and multisensory information for perception. We addressed this question studying patients with focal cerebellar lesions in a virtual-reality paradigm measuring the effect of action execution on action perception presenting self-generated movements as point lights. We measured the visual sensitivity to the point light stimuli based on signal detection theory. Compared with healthy controls cerebellar patients showed no beneficial influence of action execution on perception indicating deficits in APC. Applying lesion symptom mapping, we identified distinct areas in the dentate nucleus and the ...

Recent advances in supervised salient object detection modeling has resulted in significant performance improvements on benchmark datasets. However, most of the existing salient object detection models assume that at least one salient object exists in the input image. Such an assumption often leads to less appealing saliency maps on the background images with no salient object at all. Therefore, handling those cases can reduce the false positive rate of a model. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning approach for jointly addressing the salient object detection and existence prediction problems. Given a set of background-only images and images with salient objects, as well as their salient object annotations, we adopt the structural SVM framework and formulate the two problems jointly in a single integrated objective function: saliency labels of superpixels are involved in a classification term conditioned on the salient object existence variable, which in turn depends on both global ...
Human-object interaction (HOI) detection requires a large amount of annotated data. Current algorithms suffer from insufficient training samples and category imbalance within datasets. To increase data efficiency, in this paper, we propose an efficient and effective data augmentation method called DecAug for HOI detection. Based on our proposed object state similarity metric, object patterns across different HOIs are shared to augment local object appearance features without changing their states. Further, we shift spatial correlation between humans and objects to other feasible configurations with the aid of a pose-guided Gaussian Mixture Model while preserving their interactions. Experiments show that our method brings up to 3.3 mAP and 1.6 mAP improvements on V-COCO and HICO-DET dataset for two advanced models. Specifically, interactions with fewer samples enjoy more notable improvement. Our method can be easily integrated into various HOI detection models with negligible extra computational ...

The localization receiver operating characteristic (LROC) curve is a standard method to quantify performance for the task of detecting and locating a signal. This curve is generalized to arbitrary detection/estimation tasks to give the estimation ROC (EROC) curve. For a two-alternative forced-choice study, where the observer must decide which of a pair of images has the signal and then estimate parameters pertaining to the signal, it is shown that the average value of the utility on those image pairs where the observer chooses the correct image is an estimate of the area under the EROC curve (AEROC). The ideal LROC observer is generalized to the ideal EROC observer, whose EROC curve lies above those of all other observers for the given detection/estimation task. When the utility function is nonnegative, the ideal EROC observer is shown to share many mathematical properties with the ideal observer for the pure detection task. When the utility function is concave, the ideal EROC observer makes use ...

Accounting for Spatial Correlation in the Scan Statistic by Loh &Zhu [stat.AP:0712.1458] provides a picture that helps us to understand excessive false alarms in source detection when the image data set is based on the Poisson point process. Without any experience in source detection analysis, empirically I cannot state the detection statistics nor the p-values of detection methods. However, with acknowledging the over-dispersed Poisson count data and the unknown spatial correlation prior to detecting analysis, we could guess that the false discovery of sources occurs more often than what we expect ...
The Fixed Ploidy Variant Detection tool has two parameters. The ploidy level you set defines the statistical model that will be used during the variant detection analysis and thereby also defines what will be reported. The number of alleles that variant may have depends on the value that has been chosen for the ploidy parameter. For example, if you chose a ploidy of 2, then the variant at a site could be a homozygote (two alleles the same in the sample, but different to the reference), or a heterozygote (two alleles different than each other in the sample, with at least one of them different from the reference). If you had chosen a ploidy of three, then the variant at a site could be a homozygote (three alleles the same in the sample, but different to the reference), or a heterozygote (three alleles different than each other in the sample, with at least one of them different from the reference). The variant probability parameter defines how good the evidence has to be at a particular site for ...

The current implementation is based on Brillinger and Irizarry (1998) ,doi:10.1016/S0165-1684(97)00217-X, for estimating bispectrum, with Lii and Helland (1981) ,doi:10.1145/355958.355961, for cross-bispectrum.. ...
