Results There was no significant difference in Ca and P concentration in plasma between groups, but urinary Ca and P were significantly higher in OV rats (Ca 0.67±0.24 mM, P 3.29±0.77 mM) in comparison to control (Ca 0.434±0.21 mM, P 2.32±1.00 mM) and OVT group (Ca 0.52±0.19 mM, P 2.89±0.42 mM) (p,0.05). Osteocalcin levels were higher in OV group than in control and OVT group, while ALP was higher in OVT group in comparison to OV and control group. OV rats had decreased proximal width of femoral neck (7.38±0.45 mm) in comparison to control (7.55±0.51mm), while OVT group had even greater width than control group (7.73±0.38mm) (p,0.05). OV animals had lower BMD on spine, hip, pelvis, legs and total BMD in comparison to control group, while treated animals did not have different BMD from control. Ultimate load was for control 3930,6±82.4 N/m2, for OV group 2726.68±93.4 N/m2 and for OVT group 3257.2±86.5 N/m2 (p,0.01). The ratio between wet and dry bone mass 77.97% in control, 72.81% in ...

Heavy metal pollution can arise from many sources and damage many organisms. Exposure to the metal ions can leads to a reduction in cellular antioxidant enzyme activities and lowers cellular defense against oxidative stress. In this study we have tested effects of the some metal ions on the purified bovine kidney cortex glutathione reductase (GR). Cadmium (Cd2+), nickel (Ni2+), and zinc (Zn2+) showed inhibitory effect on the enzyme. The obtained IC50 values of Cd2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ are 0.027, 0.8, and 1mM, respectively. Kinetic characterization of the inhibition is also investigated. Cd2+ inhibition is noncompetitive with respect to both oxidized glutathione (GSSG) (KiGSSG 0.060 +/- 0.005mM) and NADPH (KiNADPH 0.025 +/- 0.002mM). Ni2+ inhibition is noncompetitive with respect to GSSG (KiGSSG 0.329 +/- 0.016mM) and uncompetitive with respect to NADPH (KiNADPH 0.712 +/- 0.047mM). The effect of Zn2+ on GR activity is consistent with noncompetitive inhibition pattern when the varied substrate is the ...

Euphorbia aff. Viridis (Klotzsch & Garcke) boiss, a plant species belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, is one of the most diverse of the American continent, and is used in multiple treatments in ancestral medicine in the Ecuadorian Andes. In the present study organic compounds extracted from the leaves of the plant were analyzed. The description and taxonomic classification of the plant was established. For the phytochemical study, phenols, tannins, saponins, coumarins, lactones and flavonoids were analyzed, and positive results were observed for each chemical compound, with the exception of alkaloid compounds. The chemical characterization by Gas Chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry GS-MS, showed 36.66% lanosterol, 12.25% β-sitosterol, 5.11% 3-β-cholest-4-en-3-ol, 4.73% Hexadecanoic acid as major elements. The microbiological assay of ethanolic extracts showed a 44% inhibition percentage on Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC70693) and 43% on Escherichia coli (ATCC10536) with an MIC of 30μl ...
Background and objectives: Acantholimon bracteatum (Girard) Boiss (Plumbaginaceae) is used in variety of diseases including hepatic ailments in the west regions of Iran. In the present study, the hepatoprotective effect of the methanol extract (ME) of A. bracteatum on formaldehyde (FA) induced liver injury has been investigated in adult male mice. Methods: Fifty six adult male mice were divided into 8 groups. The control group received normal saline. Group II (E2) was treated with formaldehyde 10 mg/kg. Group III to VIII (E3-E8) were treated with both FA (10 mg/kg) and the metanol extract at doses of 5, 10, 15, 20, 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. All animals were treated for 2 weeks (once every other day). At the end of the morphology, histopathology of liver and serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were evaluated. Results: Formaldehyde induced liver damage both in histology and function. The levels of ALT, AST and ALP enzymes

Abstract:. Introduction: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are drugs that can control hypertension. Pereskia saccharose Griseb. leaves have been used traditionally as antihypertensive. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the antihypertensive activity through inhibition of ACE activity, the total phenolic content and total flavonoid content of the ethanolic extract of Pereskia saccharose Griseb. leaves and its fractions. Methods: Extraction was done by maceration with 80% ethanol and fractionation performed by liquid-liquid partition. Results: In vitro ACE inhibitory activity assay of the ethanolic extract using ACE Kit-WST Dojindo had IC50 value of 3.448 μg/mL and ethyl acetate fraction had IC50 value of 1.714 x 10-3 μg/mL. Ethyl acetate contained the highest amounts of both TPC (72.991 ± 0.932 mg GAE/g sample) and TFC (61.337 ± 1.612 mg QE/g sample). Conclusion: The results suggest that Pereskia saccharose Griseb. possess ACE inhibitory activity.. ...

Out of these buildings, the Ricreatorio Mario Marinoni is the most prominent. Built in 1921, it was donated by citizens to the Ospedale al Mare complex in order to make more cheerful the permanence of children in the Hospital, improving the care for children through education and art.. Teatro Marinoni was in the forefront of innovative healing procedures, namely by introducing the educative and entertainment aspect in a healthcare typology. In the 1970s decade, after strong lacking of funding the activities were strongly reduced. The Theatre building was closed in 1975 and a slow shutting-down process of the entire hospital would definitely end in 2006.. Many years of abandonment have taken its toll: the buildings have become strongly degraded and vandalized, apart from the strong influence of the elements. With no private financial interest in the abandoned property, no efforts were made to protect or secure the buildings.. The Ospedale al Mare was a great part of the Cultural heritage and it ...
