On February 2, 2007, football violence occurred between football supporters and the police in Catania, Italy. The clashes occurred during and after the Serie A match between Catania and Palermo football clubs, also known as the Sicilian derby. Police officer Filippo Raciti was killed. The football match between Catania and Palermo, a derby between two of the three Serie A club that hail from Sicily (the other being Messina), was originally scheduled to be played on February 4 at 3 pm. However, after requests from the Catania management, the Lega Nazionale Professionisti brought the match forward to February 2, with 6 pm as the scheduled kick-off time, in order to avoid clashing with the official St. Agatha celebrations in Catania. The match started without the Palermo supporters, who arrived in the stadium ten minutes after the beginning of the second half, allegedly because of organizational problems. After the Palermo supporters entrance, with Palermo leading 1-0 thanks to a controversial ...
Sicily DMC Incentives: Catania and the feast of SantAgata, the most incredible religious festival in Europe Sicily DMC Incentives: Catania SantAgata Edition 2020. The feast of St. Agata, patron saint of Catania, is one of the most beautiful patronal feast in the world, from 3 to 5 February three days of worship, devotion, folklore, traditions. On the days of the celebrations the traditional Fiera market of S. Agata takes place in the city. PROCESSION Every year Catania offers its patron an extraordinary feast that can be compared to the Holy Week in Seville or the Corpus Domini in Cuzco, Peru. In those three days the city forgets everything to focus on the party, a mixture of devotion and folklore, which attracts up to a million people every year, among devotees and curious. The first day is reserved for candles. An evocative popular custom wants the donated candles to be as tall or heavy as the person asking for protection. The major religious, civil and military authorities participate in ...
Today in Sicily most people are bilingual and speak both Italian and Sicilian, a distinct and historical Romance language of the Italo-Dalmatian family. Many Sicilian words are of Greek origin, while smaller number of other loan words are from Norman, Arabic, Berber, Catalan, Spanish and other languages.[25] Dialects related to Sicilian are also spoken in far south Calabria and Salento; it had a significant influence on the Maltese language. However the use of Sicilian is limited to informal contexts (mostly in family). Sicilian was an early influence in the development of standard Italian, although its use remained confined to an intellectual elite. This was a literary language in Sicily created under the auspices of Frederick II and his court of notaries or Magna Curia which, headed by Giacomo da Lentini, also gave birth to the Sicilian School, widely inspired by troubadour literature. It is in this language that appeared the first sonnet, whose invention is attributed to Giacomo da Lentini ...
Even after the Norman conquest, the new masters still possessed this knowledge. They outright promoted the Arab sciences and Muslim scientists. For instance, the West owed the decisive leap of understanding in the field of geography to Norman King Roger II, and above all to the scholar Al-Idrisi, whom he funded. On behalf of the King, Al-Idrisi compiled a description of the Earth along with a variety of maps. In the process, he asked travelers who came to Sicily; he, too, embarked on expeditions that were funded by the King and led him to the West coast of England. It was not until Al-Idrisi that the West learned about the existence of countries like India or China.. In the next episode, Sicily gets itself a new ruler, again: The Normans come. All parts of this series can be found here.. And if you want to see more pictures of Sicily, we recommend our Sicily in full bloom series. ...
We will be facing a clear omission of duty with all that a clear omission entails in an epidemic situation, Musumeci said.. However, Musumeci said his administration would also be ready to give two, three, or eight days more to the Central Government if it accepted to comply with his regions demands.. In a statement, the Interior Ministry said it had always been committed to reducing the impact of the strong migration pressure on Sicily, which it blamed on a jump in arrivals from Tunisia.. It said about 3,500 migrants had been moved out of Sicily since July, stressing that since August, all incoming sea migrants had been tested for the novel coronavirus.. Musumeci justified his decree on health grounds, saying that overcrowded migrant reception centres were a contagion risk for the novel coronavirus.. The president also noted that Sicily recorded 7,067 sea migrant arrivals in July and more than 3,000 in the first half of August, compared to 1,088 and 1,268 in July and August 2019.. According ...

My original flight booked me into Naples because there hadnt been any miles award seats into Sicily when Id booked. I strongly believe that American Airlines could have easily helped right the wrong of insisting I remain routed through Miami post-hurricane, by putting me onto a flight directly to Sicily, but even my Miami hero couldnt get them to do that.. I wish that during my hours at JFK while I wanted for my onward flight to Rome, Id booked an inexpensive flight from Rome to Sicily, but I was so tired and dazed that I didnt have the mind to think of that. Seated on the flight to Rome, the man beside me thought of it and I started to book such a flight on Vueling Airlines. However, we taxied before I could complete the transaction. Ironically, we then sat on the runway for over an hour - but such is life and I was still thrilled to be knowing Id at least get to Rome this day.. Upon landing in Rome, I had very little time. The hour-plus loss on the runway ate into my planning time. ...

The best would be the one that most suits your style of study and play. If you dont like theory, or razor sharp positions, then the Najdorf or Dragon would be the worst choice on either grounds. Thats the part of the Sicilians attraction: regardless of your style of play, or how little you like studying theory, there is a Sicilian that will fit.. The Sicilian 4 Ns, for instance, doesnt give black the winning chances he has in say the Najdorf, but its also very resilient and a good choice for someone who wants to play the Sicilian, but doesnt want a lot of theory or to be faced with the knife edged attacks a Dragon player regularly sees. The trade off is that its very drawish and when theres winning chances, they often belong to white; and you need to know how to play with an IQP, because its something black is saddled with in the mainline 4 Ns.. Also there is another factor too: transpositions. Sicilians generally have the flexibility of letting you transpose into another Sicilian, which ...

This Septembers program in Sicily was our first in two years, and in many ways we were unsure about what we would find. We were pleasantly surprised to see how Fabrizia Lanza is tending her mother, Anna Tasca Lanzas exquisite garden and cooking school. This was the first trip since the passing of Anna Tasca Lanza, great friend and renowned cookbook author, whose estate, Regaleali was-and still is, the centerpiece of our program.. We found some things changed, as things often are over time, and other things we found to be as expected. In the end, we left re-invigorated about Sicily and its future. The islands deep flavors and rough landscape is still unlike any other in Italy, and we were pleased to find that a younger, innovative generation is now carrying culinary traditions forward. We are excited to be on the crest of this new Sicilian wave, and look forward to bringing you, our guests, along for the ride.. One of my favorite global expressions is, same, same but different. Here are a ...
The city of Segesta, in the north-west of Sicily, was founded in the 6 th century BC by a native Sicilian people, the Elymi. Stories that it was founded by Trojan refugees are probably baseless. By the 5 th century BC, the city was wealthy and densely populated. At the time, the Greeks had colonized the east of Sicily and the Carthaginians the south-west. Being bitter foes, they fought a number of wars. It is believed that the Elymians ordered the construction of the Doric Temple which was designed by an Athenian architect in about 411 BC, during a period of relative peace and prosperity. Some speculate that the temple was built because of the increasing Hellenization of the Elymians. Another theory is that the structure was part of a larger project that involved an Elymian sacred place and that the temple was part of this complex of structures. The Doric Temple of Segesta. ( Giulio / Adobe Stock) The hollow temple is all that stands today. This was due to the fact that the Elymians were not ...

Background and aim of the works: Rotavirus (RV) is considered the main cause of gastroenteritis in children from 0 to 59 months and vaccination represents the only strategy to prevent hospitalizations due to RV. In 2013 Sicilian Region introduced universal RV vaccination for all newborns. The present study aims to estimate the reduction rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) hospitalization rates among Sicilian children and their relations with vaccination coverages of the nine Sicilian Local Health Units (LHUs). Methods: Were analyzed hospital discharge records including a diagnosis of RVGE occurred from January 2009 to December 2017 in hospitalized children aged 0 to 59 months, residents in Sicily. Were reported data on complete RV vaccination cycles among Sicilian children under 12 months of age (vaccination coverage). Given the high prevalence and the rapid increase of obesity among young people in Sicily [3], and the lack of data for children aged 10 - 14 years, this study of BMI and the reasons for following a diet in this age group is timely. This information is needed to develop appropriate prevention measures as well as treatment interventions. We conducted a large and regional-scale study in Sicily. We identified a worrying percentage of overweight and obese (15.5%) as well as underweight (6.6%) children. A comparison of the overweight and obesity data in our sample with those obtained by the ISTAT survey [2], which uses weight and height reported by parents, confirms that those weight excesses affect boys more than girls. However, our study found that dieting was more common among girls, in each category of weight status. Although the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing, the desire to be thin is still very popular; in fact, the habit of relying on a diet to lose weight is common among ...

Genomic technologies, such as high-throughput genotyping based on SNP arrays, provided background information concerning genome structure in domestic animals. The aim of this work was to investigate the genetic structure, the genome-wide estimates of inbreeding, coancestry, effective population size (Ne), and the patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) in two economically important Sicilian local cattle breeds, Cinisara (CIN) and Modicana (MOD), using the Illumina Bovine SNP50K v2 BeadChip. In order to understand the genetic relationship and to place both Sicilian breeds in a global context, genotypes from others 134 domesticated bovid breeds were used. Principal component analysis showed that the Sicilian cattle breeds were closer to individuals of B. t. taurus from Eurasia and formed non-overlapping clusters with other breeds. Between the Sicilian cattle breeds, MOD was the most differentiated, whereas the animals belonging to CIN breed showed a lower value of assignment, the presence of ...
In particular, the presence of a modal haplotype coming from the southern Balkan Peninsula and of its one-step derivates associated to E3b1a2-V13, supports a common genetic heritage between Sicilians and Greeks. The estimate of Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor is about 2380 years before present, which broadly agrees with the archaeological traces of the Greek classic era. The Eastern and Western part of Sicily appear to be significantly different by the chi2-analysis, although the extent of such differentiation is not very high according to an analysis of molecular variance. The presence of a high number of different haplogroups in the island makes its gene diversity to reach about 0.9. The general heterogeneous composition of haplogroups in our Sicilian data is similar to the patterns observed in other major islands of the Mediterranean, reflecting the complex histories of settlements in Sicily ...

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). At present, the etiology HO is unknown, however, genetic predisposition may be a cause of HO in individuals in whom no risk factors can be detected. The goal of this study was to investigate the HLA system, searching for any correlation with the presence of HO after THA. Thirty-five patients of Sicilian origin were operated on between January 1997 and January 1999 for cementless THA under regional anesthesia. The entire series was divided into three groups and all underwent histocompatibility typing. Group I was made up of 10 patients who presented with HO Brooker grades 1 and 2 after THA; group 2 comprised 7 patients affected by grades 3 and 4 HO after THA; and group 3 was made up of 18 subjects who presented with one or more preoperative risk factors for developing peri-prosthetic HO before undergoing THA. No positivity for HLA-B27 antigen was observed, but there was as an increase in HLA-B18 (with respect

This study addresses the epidemiologic relatedness of a collection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from cystic fibrosis patients attending the Pediatric Clinic, Catania, Sicily. Genome macrorestriction analysis after pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to characterise all strains. Furthermore, a rapid typing procedure, developed in this study, based on polymerase chain reaction amplified ribosomal DNA spacer polymorphisms (PCR-ribotyping), straight from bacterial cultures, was used. On the basis of macrorestriction analysis after PFGE, persistence of infection was shown in all patients; two cross-transmission episodes were identified in the nosocomial as well as in the familiar environment. PCR-ribotyping proved to be useful for a DNA-based identification test, suitable for screening purposes. The rapid amplification protocol here tested is proposed to evaluate the discriminatory power of other specific target sequences in PCR-based typing assays, for epidemiologic purposes.
If theres one word to describe Sicilys Aeolian Islands: authentic. The collection of seven islands off the coast of Sicily are thriving and forward thinking, but deeply steeped in tradition that is a unique combination of Italian, Sicilian, and distinctly Aeolian. Whether it is the distant rumble from the active volcano on Stromboli, the breathtaking oceanic views, or the entrancing aromas from the seaside kitchens, we are hooked - and you will be too.. We had the privilege to cook alongside one of the Aeolian Islands most revered chefs, Michele Caruso, chef-owner of the magnificent Hotel Signum, one of our favorite places to stay on our adventure in September. He is the most unassuming, gentle and kind of souls, preferring to tend to the garden and chat with guests… he appears more like the gardener than the owner of such a successful hotel and restaurant. Our lovely 2018 calendar reflects a summer holiday spent in Sicily in 2017. It almost goes without saying that the weather and food were both amazing - it is part of Italy, after all! But Palermo in particular had an edgier feel than most of mainland Italy, and a sense of modern day neglect that counterpoised the historical aspects of the city quite starkly.. The second week of our holiday was spent in Syracuse, with its amazing Greek and Roman history and architecture. Here, on the island of Ortigia, at the foot of Syracuse, we came across 5th century EBC Greek architecture that was still functioning today, in the form of the Duomo di Siracusa, built into the great Greek Temple of Athena. The temple was originally a Doric building with six columns o. n the short sides and 14 on the long sides. Today it has gained a Baroque frontage (built around 1740s), but the walls have been fitted very satisfactorily around the original columns. It was amazing to see and feel the continuity of use to this ...

The COMETA e-Infrastructure, financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research through the PI2S2 project, is distributed over 7 sites in Sicily with more than 2000 CPU cores and 250 TB of disk storage. Over 40 applications in Astrophysics, Bioinformatics, Biomedicine, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics are already running on the Sicilian e-Infrastructure, which can perform the equivalent of more than ten years work in just one month. The COMETA Consortium and the PI2S2 project are completely changing the perspectives of scientific computation in Sicily says Prof. Roberto Barbera, Chief Technical Officer of COMETA and Coordinator of PI2S2, opening the doors of a large e-Infrastructure also to the needs of numerous SMEs located in the region. All this would have been impossible without the experience gained by some of the members of the Consortium through the participation in a large international Grid project such as ...
Two hundred seventy-five thousand maternal deaths, 2.7 million neonatal deaths, and 2.6 million stillbirths have been estimated in 2015 worldwide, almost all in low-income countries (LICs). Moreover, more than 20 million severe disabilities result from the complications of pregnancy, childbirth or its management each year. A significant decrease of mortality/morbidity rates could be achieved by providing effective perinatal and newborn care also in high-income countries (HICs), especially in peripheral hospitals and/or rural areas, where the number of childbirths per year is often under the minimal threshold recognized by the reference legislation. We report on a 2 years retrospective cohort study, conducted in a first level peripheral hospital in Cefalù, a small city in Sicily (Italy), to evaluate care provided and mortality/morbidity rates. The proposed goal is to improve the quality of care, and the services that peripheral centers can offer. We collected data from maternity and neonatal records,

Though its origin is still somewhat debated, most linguistic scholarship traces Sicilian to a group of languages spoken originally by the peoples who populated the island up to some 700 years a.D., not all of them, possibly, of Hindu-European origin; the Sicani, originally from Iberia, the Elimi from Libya, and the Siculi, from mainland Italy. ...

The authors confirm what I reported over two years ago on this blog: mainland and island Greeks are genetically distinct, probably because the former have recent admixture from Slavs and Slav-influenced people. And, many Southern Italians resemble island Greeks.. Interesting post, but your prediction is wrong since mainland and island Greeks are distinct primarily due to genetic drift caused by geography rather than admixture from Slavic/Slavicized tribes. In other words, the hypothesis made by Sarno et al. regarding continental Greeks is falsified by the genetic studies below confirming the historical fact that Slavic/Slavicized admixture in the majority Greek population (continental or otherwise) was and still remains negligible.. *Stamatoyannopoulos et al., Genetics of the Peloponnesean Populations and the Theory of Extinction of the Medieval Peloponnesean Greeks, European Journal of Human Genetics advance online publication 8 March 2017; doi: 10.1038/ejhg.2017.18. *Kushniarevich A, Utevska ...

Its no secret that Im a fan of orange wine (the good stuff tho).. This is a brilliantly made one. The tannins are very well integrated, and aromas are delicate. Its vinified in amphorae, as with many other orange wines, and this particular wine really is very reminiscent of sunny Sicily.. NB: why is it orange? Orange wine is orange due to its prolonged time spent with the grape skins (in this case - a while seven months in amphora with its skins). In a way, it is white wine produced in the style of making red wine. Herby, spiced, orange-peel nose with delicate floral aromas. Textured and supple, the palate is fresh, spicy and slightly saline on the finish. About the wine:. Grape: 100% Greciano (NB: this is DNA identical to Garganega according to Jancis.). Biodynamic.. Seven months ageing in amphorae (large terracotta pots, that mean the wine avoids oak flavour and can breathe more). ...

The strong habitat effect revealed the unsuitability of intensive arable lands with respect to extensive grasslands for lesser kestrels. Notably, artichokes, a winter-intensive crop, proved to be a high-quality habitat as they were associated with survival values equal to those of grassland. This is likely due to prey availability and reveals that non-traditional crops may provide suitable habitats for lesser kestrels. Information theory gave strong support to the negative influence of colony size on fecundity, albeit a small one, for its positive effect on survival probability. The estimated population growth rate was negative for all three habitats, indicating a decline over time and urging conservation actions in all of the areas studied. This decline was much higher in colonies surrounded by arable fields. In sensitivity analyses, λ indicated that adult survival was the parameter with the greatest effect on population growth, followed by survival of fledglings and fecundity. Our study ...
COLBORNE, JOHN, 1st Baron Seaton, soldier and colonial administrator; b. 16 Feb. 1778 at Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England, the only son of Samuel Colborne and Cordelia Anne Garstin; d. 17 April 1863 in Torquay, Devonshire, England. An orphan at age 13, John Colborne was educated at Christs Hospital, London, and Winchester College. He entered the army as an ensign in the 20th Regiment in 1794, winning his subsequent promotions to field marshal without purchase. Though not aggressive, he was concerned that his achievements should be recognized, and on occasion successfully drew attention to an earned but unawarded promotion. Promoted captain-lieutenant in 1799, he saw active service at Helder (Netherlands), and as captain in Egypt, Malta, and Sicily. In 1806 he became military secretary to General Henry Edward Fox, commander in Sicily and the Mediterranean. He was promoted major in 1808 by Sir John Moore, who made him his military secretary. He accompanied Moore to Sweden and Portugal; at Coruña ...
The evolution of soluble V and Ni concentrations (typical markers of heavy fuel oil combustion) was related to meteorology and ship traffic intensity in the Straight of Sicily, using a high-resolution regional model for calculation of back trajectories. Elevated concentration of V and Ni at Capo Granitola and Lampedusa are found to correspond with air masses from the Straight of Sicily and coincidences between trajectories and positions of large ships; the vertical structure of the planetary boundary layer also appears to play a role, with high V values associated with strong inversions and a stable boundary layer. The V concentration was generally lower at Lampedusa than at Capo Granitola V, where it reached a peak value of 40 ng m−3 ...

Ed Mell - Rising Phoenix | Bronze with Silver Nitrate Patina. Measurements include the base. An edition of 50, half of the edition will be placed in each of Phoenixs sister cities and the remaining pieces offered for sale. A phoenix is a mythical bird with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has a 500- to 1000-year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. (Wikipedia). The sister cities are Taipei (Taiwan), Las Cruces (New Mexico, USA), Calgary (Alberta, Canada), Catania (Sicily, Italy), Chengdu (P R of China), Ennis (Co. The natural range extends from southern Sweden to northern Sicily,[4] west to France, southern England, northern Portugal, central Spain, and east to northwest Turkey, where it intergrades with the oriental beech (Fagus orientalis), which replaces it further east. In the Balkans, it shows some hybridisation with oriental beech; these hybrid trees are named Fagus × taurica Popl. [Fagus moesiaca (Domin, Maly) Czecz.]. In the southern part of its range around the Mediterranean, it grows only in mountain forests, at 600-1,800 m (1,969-5,906 ft) altitude. Although often regarded as native in southern England, recent evidence suggests that F. sylvatica did not arrive in England until about 4000 BC, or 2,000 years after the English Channel formed after the ice ages; it could have been an early introduction by Stone age humans, who used the nuts for food.[5] The beech is classified as a native in the south of England and as a non-native in the north where it is often removed from native woods.[6] ...

With clacking oars the Phoenicians arrived millennia ago to found their center of ancient exchange. Under golden Roman yoke the port gained gleaming palaces and mosaics. Ostrogoths, Vandals, and Byzantines alternately wrecked and rebuilt. Moorish and Berber emirs dug irrigation and harvested new fruits - the Bergamot oranges they planted still grow. Norman kings wrested the island back from the East. Garibaldis thousand redshirts galloped through, and Italy was born. All those centuries of interleaved layers, one bled into the other, remain palpable in the air, the water, the art, the architecture, the spirit. Delta beta (δβ)-thalassemia results from a deletion in both the delta and beta genes on chromosome 11. The gamma genes on the affected chromosome increase their production of gamma globin, thereby increasing the amount of hemoglobin F (HbF). δβ-Thalassemia heterozygotes clinically show characteristics of thalassemia minor. However, homozygous δβ-thalassemia may give a clinical picture of thalassemia intermedia with a mild anemia.. A 12-month-old boy presented to the hematology outpatient department for evaluation of pallor and jaundice that had been for the past 2 months. He had no history of a blood transfusion. His family history was insignificant for congenital anemia. His parents had a consanguineous marriage. Physical examination revealed pallor and palpable spleen 2 cm below the left costal margin. Other examination findings were unremarkable. A complete blood count (CBC) revealed an Hb level of 8.0 g/dL, WBC count of 8.9×109/L, and platelet count of 341×109/L (Table 1). A ...

Title:Neuro-Inflammatory Mechanisms in Developmental Disorders Associated with Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Neuro- Immune Perspective. VOLUME: 15 ISSUE: 4. Author(s):Barbara Di Marco, Carmela M. Bonaccorso, Elisabetta Aloisi, Simona DAntoni and Maria V. Catania. Affiliation:Institute of Neurological Science, CNR, via Paolo Gaifami n°18, 95126 Catania, Italy.. Keywords:Neurodevelopment, cytokines, immune cells, microglia, astrocytes, gliosis, autism, mental retardation.. Abstract:Intellectual disability (ID) and autism are present in several neurodevelopmental disorders and are often associated in genetic syndromes, such as Fragile X and Rett syndromes. While most evidence indicates that a genetic component plays an important role in the aetiology of both autism and ID, a number of studies suggest that immunological dysfunctions may participate in the pathophysiology of these disorders. Brain-specific autoantibodies have been detected in the sera of many autistic ...
Hepatic tumors represent only 1% of all pediatric neoplasms; unfortunately, in twothirds of cases, they are malignant. Clinical presentation is often non-specific, causing late diagnosis. Imaging plays a fundamental role in characterizing lesions, staging and evaluating the adequate treatment and the outcome. For staging disease, The Pretreatment Extent of Disease (PRETEXT) system could be assessed using Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance (MR). Main malignant liver tumors include: hepatoblastoma ...
Levocabastine is an antiallergic drug acting as a histamine H1-receptor antagonist. In allergic conjunctivitis (AC), it may also antagonize up-regulation of the intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expressed on epithelial conjunctival cells. However, little is known about its effects on eosinophils, important effector cells in AC. The adhesion molecule integrin alpha(4)beta(1) is expressed in eosinophils; it interacts with the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and fibronectin (FN) in vascular endothelial cells and contributes to eosinophil activation and infiltration in AC. This study provides evidence that in a scintillation proximity assay levocabastine (IC(50) 406 microM), but not the first-generation antihistamine chlorpheniramine, displaced (125)I-FN binding to human integrin alpha(4)beta(1) and, in flow cytometry analysis, levocabastine antagonized the binding of a primary antibody to integrin alpha(4) expressed on the Jurkat cell surface. Levocabastine, but not ...

The ability to identify the clinical nature of the recurrent duplication of chromosome 17q12 has been limited by its rarity and the diverse range of phenotypes associated with this genomic change. In order to further define the clinical features of affected patients, detailed clinical information was collected in the largest series to date (30 patients and 2 of their siblings) through a multi-institutional collaborative effort. The majority of patients presented with developmental delays varying from mild to severe. Though dysmorphic features were commonly reported, patients do not have consistent and recognizable features. Cardiac, ophthalmologic, growth, behavioral, and other abnormalities were each present in a subset of patients. The newly associated features potentially resulting from 17q12 duplication include height and weight above the 95th percentile, cataracts, microphthalmia, coloboma, astigmatism, tracheomalacia, cutaneous mosaicism, pectus excavatum, scoliosis, hypermobility, ...
Article PreviewArticle PreviewArticle PreviewThe recent improvement of GaN material quality launched new perspective for its application in power devices. However, ion-implanted guard-ring edge terminations, necessary to improve the breakdown voltage, are not well developed as in SiC technology. Indeed, the effects of high-temperature annealing, required for the electrical activation of the implanted species in GaN, on the electrical behaviour of Schottky contact was not reported. In this work, the influence of high temperature annealing (1150-1200 C) on the surface morphology of GaN and on the electrical behaviour of Schottky contact was studied. Although the morphology of GaN surface did not substantially change after annealing, a worsening of the electrical behaviour of Schottky contact was observed. This latter was ascribed to the formation of a high density of interface states after annealing ...

The next combination we tried was the South Beach Living Spinach and Mushroom Pizza with Harvest Wheat Crust paired with several different wines. We really expected to prefer the whites with this since it had a creamy style sauce. However, it turned out to be pretty versatile.. The Pinot Grigio and Merlot were our favorites. The dry white Pinot Grigio paired beautifully with the spinach and cream while the Merlot really went well with the mushrooms. This is a good pizza to serve with both white and red wines. Mushrooms are such a great ingredient. They soak up the flavors around them and are really great with wine. We use Monterey Mushrooms at the Vintage House restaurant in many of our dishes because they help create such an affinity with ...
The 2018 Zibibbo in Pithos is a special product with no rivals I can think of in Italy. It opens to a pale-copper golden color, with an enormously fragrant bouquet that is beaming with honeysuckle, star jasmine, acacia flower and the kind of sweet almond blossoms that color the landscape around the Temples of Agrigento in the spring. You also get a touch of zagara, which is a local word for orange blossom. All these aromas take you directly to southeast Sicily where these sun-kissed grapes are cultivated. This wine is aged for seven months on the skins in amphorae, and added dimensions and complexity are rendered by those slightly more oxidized aromas that recall caramel and dried apricot. The acidity is there, maybe the wine could use a pinch more, and you dont taste or feel much alcohol at a light 11.5%, but the results are beautiful nonetheless ...
Poor Caracciolo (English Wikipedia entry , Italian) - and not to be confused with the Italian saint of the same name - got middled by the French Revolution.. He was a trusted admiral from a noble family, and indeed had served with the British Navy (Italian link). Caracciolo got tapped for escort duty to help King Ferdinand IV and his wife Maria Carolina* flee from a Naples threatened by French troops to the safety of a British fleet stationed at Sicily.**. But he seems to have been troubled by that flight by consciousness of a conflict between civic duty and duty to sovereign.. Carraciolo would later tell the drumhead court that condemned him that it was not he who had turned coat; rather, the King deserted me and all his faithful subjects … The King collected everything that could be converted into specie on pretence of paying [the] army … and fled with it to Palermo, there to riot in luxurious safety. Who was then the traitor - the King or myself?. With said King a-riot offshore, French ...
