On February 2, 2007, football violence occurred between football supporters and the police in Catania, Italy. The clashes occurred during and after the Serie A match between Catania and Palermo football clubs, also known as the Sicilian derby. Police officer Filippo Raciti was killed. The football match between Catania and Palermo, a derby between two of the three Serie A club that hail from Sicily (the other being Messina), was originally scheduled to be played on February 4 at 3 pm. However, after requests from the Catania management, the Lega Nazionale Professionisti brought the match forward to February 2, with 6 pm as the scheduled kick-off time, in order to avoid clashing with the official St. Agatha celebrations in Catania. The match started without the Palermo supporters, who arrived in the stadium ten minutes after the beginning of the second half, allegedly because of organizational problems. After the Palermo supporters entrance, with Palermo leading 1-0 thanks to a controversial ...

Today in Sicily most people are bilingual and speak both Italian and Sicilian, a distinct and historical Romance language of the Italo-Dalmatian family. Many Sicilian words are of Greek origin, while smaller number of other loan words are from Norman, Arabic, Berber, Catalan, Spanish and other languages.[25] Dialects related to Sicilian are also spoken in far south Calabria and Salento; it had a significant influence on the Maltese language. However the use of Sicilian is limited to informal contexts (mostly in family). Sicilian was an early influence in the development of standard Italian, although its use remained confined to an intellectual elite. This was a literary language in Sicily created under the auspices of Frederick II and his court of notaries or Magna Curia which, headed by Giacomo da Lentini, also gave birth to the Sicilian School, widely inspired by troubadour literature. It is in this language that appeared the first sonnet, whose invention is attributed to Giacomo da Lentini ...

The "best" would be the one that most suits your style of study and play. If you dont like theory, or razor sharp positions, then the Najdorf or Dragon would be the worst choice on either grounds. Thats the part of the Sicilians attraction: regardless of your style of play, or how little you like studying theory, there is a Sicilian that will fit.. The Sicilian 4 Ns, for instance, doesnt give black the winning chances he has in say the Najdorf, but its also very resilient and a good choice for someone who wants to play the Sicilian, but doesnt want a lot of theory or to be faced with the knife edged attacks a Dragon player regularly sees. The trade off is that its very drawish and when theres winning chances, they often belong to white; and you need to know how to play with an IQP, because its something black is saddled with in the mainline 4 Ns.. Also there is another factor too: transpositions. Sicilians generally have the flexibility of letting you transpose into another Sicilian, which ...

Background and aim of the works: Rotavirus (RV) is considered the main cause of gastroenteritis in children from 0 to 59 months and vaccination represents the only strategy to prevent hospitalizations due to RV. In 2013 Sicilian Region introduced universal RV vaccination for all newborns. The present study aims to estimate the reduction rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE) hospitalization rates among Sicilian children and their relations with vaccination coverages of the nine Sicilian Local Health Units (LHUs). Methods: Were analyzed hospital discharge records including a diagnosis of RVGE occurred from January 2009 to December 2017 in hospitalized children aged 0 to 59 months, residents in Sicily. Were reported data on complete RV vaccination cycles among Sicilian children under 12 months of age (vaccination coverage). Results: A 49.2% overall reduction of RVGE hospitalization rates was reported after RV vaccination introduction. A more considerable reduction of hospitalization rates was observed ...
Given the high prevalence and the rapid increase of obesity among young people in Sicily [3], and the lack of data for children aged 10 - 14 years, this study of BMI and the reasons for following a diet in this age group is timely. This information is needed to develop appropriate prevention measures as well as treatment interventions. We conducted a large and regional-scale study in Sicily. We identified a worrying percentage of overweight and obese (15.5%) as well as underweight (6.6%) children. A comparison of the overweight and obesity data in our sample with those obtained by the ISTAT survey [2], which uses weight and height reported by parents, confirms that those weight excesses affect boys more than girls. However, our study found that dieting was more common among girls, in each category of weight status. Although the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing, the desire to be thin is still very popular; in fact, the habit of relying on a diet to lose weight is common among ...

Genomic technologies, such as high-throughput genotyping based on SNP arrays, provided background information concerning genome structure in domestic animals. The aim of this work was to investigate the genetic structure, the genome-wide estimates of inbreeding, coancestry, effective population size (Ne), and the patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) in two economically important Sicilian local cattle breeds, Cinisara (CIN) and Modicana (MOD), using the Illumina Bovine SNP50K v2 BeadChip. In order to understand the genetic relationship and to place both Sicilian breeds in a global context, genotypes from others 134 domesticated bovid breeds were used. Principal component analysis showed that the Sicilian cattle breeds were closer to individuals of B. t. taurus from Eurasia and formed non-overlapping clusters with other breeds. Between the Sicilian cattle breeds, MOD was the most differentiated, whereas the animals belonging to CIN breed showed a lower value of assignment, the presence of ...
In particular, the presence of a modal haplotype coming from the southern Balkan Peninsula and of its one-step derivates associated to E3b1a2-V13, supports a common genetic heritage between Sicilians and Greeks. The estimate of Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor is about 2380 years before present, which broadly agrees with the archaeological traces of the Greek classic era. The Eastern and Western part of Sicily appear to be significantly different by the chi2-analysis, although the extent of such differentiation is not very high according to an analysis of molecular variance. The presence of a high number of different haplogroups in the island makes its gene diversity to reach about 0.9. The general heterogeneous composition of haplogroups in our Sicilian data is similar to the patterns observed in other major islands of the Mediterranean, reflecting the complex histories of settlements in Sicily ...

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). At present, the etiology HO is unknown, however, genetic predisposition may be a cause of HO in individuals in whom no risk factors can be detected. The goal of this study was to investigate the HLA system, searching for any correlation with the presence of HO after THA. Thirty-five patients of Sicilian origin were operated on between January 1997 and January 1999 for cementless THA under regional anesthesia. The entire series was divided into three groups and all underwent histocompatibility typing. Group I was made up of 10 patients who presented with HO Brooker grades 1 and 2 after THA; group 2 comprised 7 patients affected by grades 3 and 4 HO after THA; and group 3 was made up of 18 subjects who presented with one or more preoperative risk factors for developing peri-prosthetic HO before undergoing THA. No positivity for HLA-B27 antigen was observed, but there was as an increase in HLA-B18 (with respect
This study addresses the epidemiologic relatedness of a collection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from cystic fibrosis patients attending the Pediatric Clinic, Catania, Sicily. Genome macrorestriction analysis after pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to characterise all strains. Furthermore, a rapid typing procedure, developed in this study, based on polymerase chain reaction amplified ribosomal DNA spacer polymorphisms (PCR-ribotyping), straight from bacterial cultures, was used. On the basis of macrorestriction analysis after PFGE, persistence of infection was shown in all patients; two cross-transmission episodes were identified in the nosocomial as well as in the familiar environment. PCR-ribotyping proved to be useful for a DNA-based identification test, suitable for screening purposes. The rapid amplification protocol here tested is proposed to evaluate the discriminatory power of other specific target sequences in PCR-based typing assays, for epidemiologic purposes.
If theres one word to describe Sicilys Aeolian Islands: authentic. The collection of seven islands off the coast of Sicily are thriving and forward thinking, but deeply steeped in tradition that is a unique combination of Italian, Sicilian, and distinctly Aeolian. Whether it is the distant rumble from the active volcano on Stromboli, the breathtaking oceanic views, or the entrancing aromas from the seaside kitchens, we are hooked - and you will be too.. We had the privilege to cook alongside one of the Aeolian Islands most revered chefs, Michele Caruso, chef-owner of the magnificent Hotel Signum, one of our favorite places to stay on our adventure in September. He is the most unassuming, gentle and kind of souls, preferring to tend to the garden and chat with guests… he appears more like the gardener than the owner of such a successful hotel and restaurant. His daughter Martina, has taken over the kitchen at the hotel and has elevated its cuisine to the point of receiving her first Michelin ...

The COMETA e-Infrastructure, financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research through the PI2S2 project, is distributed over 7 sites in Sicily with more than 2000 CPU cores and 250 TB of disk storage. Over 40 applications in Astrophysics, Bioinformatics, Biomedicine, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics are already running on the Sicilian e-Infrastructure, which can perform the equivalent of more than ten years work in just one month. "The COMETA Consortium and the PI2S2 project are completely changing the perspectives of scientific computation in Sicily" says Prof. Roberto Barbera, Chief Technical Officer of COMETA and Coordinator of PI2S2, "opening the doors of a large e-Infrastructure also to the needs of numerous SMEs located in the region. All this would have been impossible without the experience gained by some of the members of the Consortium through the participation in a large international Grid project such as ...

When we asked who he was and whether he was alive or not, they said that he had died on military service in Sicily, leaving a daughter, this Callippe, in the house of Euctemon, and that these two sons were born to her while she was under his guardianship, thus inventing a story surpassing the limits of impudence and quite untrue, as I will prove to you first of all from the answers which they themselves gave ...

Sushi and sashimi are traditional Japanese food, mostly consisting of raw seafood alone or in combination with rice. Eating sushi and sashimi has become popular in many countries even outside Japan. This food is not free from health risks such as ingestion of pathogenic bacteria or parasite. The aim of this study was to investigate on hygienic-sanitary quality of sushi and sashimi sold in the cities of Messina and Catania, Southern Italy. Fifty samples (38 sushi and 12 sashimi) were analysed to determinate the aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMB), psycrophilic bacteria (PB), Enterobacteriaceae, specific spoilage organisms (SSOs), Pseudomonas spp., coagulase-positive staphylococci, micrococci, Vibrio spp., Bacillus cereus, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes. In sushi, AMB ranged from 5.00 to 8.18 log CFU/g, PB from 4.70 to 7.13 log CFU/g, Enterobacteriaceae from 1.41 to 6.67 log CFU/g, while SSOs and Pseudomonas spp. from 3.49 to 7.72 and from 3.36 to 8.00 log CFU/g, respectively. By strict chronological reckoning, the chinoiserie decor of the Palazzina Cinese falls outside the 1682-1789 timeframe of the Versailles Century because it dates from after 1800. The spirit of chinoiserie, however, is decidedly 18th century, so I rule it within bounds. Basta!. The villa was purchased as a holiday home by King Ferdinand of Naples and Sicily* after he arrived in Palermo in 1799. Hed been driven out of Naples by a republican uprising. Fortunately, his other kingdom, Sicily, remained loyal. He and his wife Maria Carolina, sister of Marie-Antoinette, settled down to life in Sicily, which included decorating their new folly. They promptly settled on a decorative scheme in the Chinese taste.. Actually, the rooms feature not just chinoiserie, but also turcquerie, which you can make out in the picture at top left on the second page of the article (see below). ...

A detailed geological and structural analysis was carried out in the Madonie Mts., along the central-northern sector of the Sicilian-Maghrebian Chain, in order to define the tectonic evolution of the area in relation to the rotation episodes occurred since the Middle Miocene. Upper Triassic-Middle Miocene successions are characterized by two fold systems with sub-perpendicular axes, the first one trending between NNW-SSE and SSW-NNE, characterized by 15-55° angle of plunging, the second one trending between WSW-ENE and WNW-ESE, characterized by sub-horizontal axes. The second system of folds is coaxial to major south-verging breaching thrust of the Madonie Mts. over the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene thrust-top deposits. Conversely, these latter show only one fold and thrust system, roughly coaxial to the second system recognized in the Upper Trias-sic-Middle Miocene successions. The structural analysis, compared with published paleomagnetic data, revealed that the Neogene thrusting was ...

The death of a Mafia "boss of bosses" nicknamed The Beast, who ordered dozens of murders during a bloody reign of terror, could unleash a turf war between rival factions in Sicily, Italy was warned on Friday. Salvatore "Toto" Riina, one of the most brutal godfathers in the history of Cosa Nostra, died of cancer at the age of 87. He was serving 26 life sentences for multiple murder convictions. Riina, known in Sicilian dialect as "U Cortu" or Shorty because of his diminutive stature, led a reign of terror in Sicily for nearly 20 years until his arrest in 1993. In establishing an iron grip on Cosa Nostra, he murdered rivals and sent many opponents into exile in the United States and Latin America. There are now fears that "the exiles" could seek revenge against "the Corleonesi", Riina loyalists who come from the hilltop town of Corleone, immortalised by The Godfather films, and Palermo, Sicilys capital. Mafia boss of bosses Salvatore Toto Riina, is seen behind bars, during a trial in Rome, ...
