The degree of secretion was significantly less in the atropine group compared with the control group at the end of the procedure (VAS score: 16.5 ± 9.9 vs. 27.0 ± 15.9, atropine vs. control, p = 0.00). The change in the degree of secretion between the start and end of the procedure was significantly greater in the atropine group than in the control group (p = 0.00) (Fig. 2). However, the frequency of hypersalivation as predefined (VAS score ≥50) did not differ between the groups (p = 0.06).. The only complication that differed significantly between the two groups was tachycardia (p , 0.05). Complications such as aspiration, laryngospasm, and apnea were not documented in the hospital. There were fewer interventions for hypersalivation in the atropine group, but the difference was not significant (p , 0.05). As interventions, O2 administration and endotracheal intubation were not needed. After discharge, the control patients tended to have more complaints of nausea, vomiting, and ataxia, ...
Drooling, or slobbering, is the flow of saliva outside the mouth. Drooling can be caused by excess production of saliva, inability to retain saliva within the mouth (incontinence of saliva), or problems with swallowing (dysphagia or odynophagia). There are some frequent and harmless cases of drooling. For instance, a numbed mouth from either Orajel, or when going to the dentist office. Isolated drooling in healthy infants and toddlers is normal and may be associated with teething. It is unlikely to be a sign of disease or complications. Drooling in infants and young children may be exacerbated by upper respiratory infections and nasal allergies. Some people with drooling problems are at increased risk of inhaling saliva, food, or fluids into the lungs, especially if drooling is secondary to a neurological problem. However, if the bodys normal reflex mechanisms (such as gagging and coughing) are not impaired, this is not life-threatening. Drooling or sialorrhea can occur during sleep. It is ...

Glycopyrronium bromide is a medication of the muscarinic anticholinergic group. A synthetic quaternary amine, it is available in oral and intravenous (i.v.) forms. The cation, which is the active moiety, is also known as glycopyrrolate.. In anesthesia, glycopyrronium injection can be used as a preoperative medication in order to reduce salivary, tracheobronchial, and pharyngeal secretions, as well as decreasing the acidity of gastric secretion. It is also used in conjunction with neostigmine, a neuromuscular blocking reversal agent, to prevent neostigmines muscarinic effects such as bradycardia.. It is also used to reduce excessive saliva (sialorrhea). It decreases acid secretion in the stomach and so may be used for treating stomach ulcers, in combination with other medications.. Use in treating asthma and COPD has been described.. It has been used topically and orally to treat hyperhidrosis, in particular, gustatory hyperhidrosis.. ...

Spitting Mucus. Hello! Newborns may spit up mucus leftover from amniotic fluid up to 72 hrs after birth but tends to resolve sooner. If the saliva seems excessive, a doc visit is needed to check for issues of the esophagus. Spitting up milk is also common in newborns and should be discussed with your doc to ensure its normal infant reflux. For future consults, my link is healthtap.com/vanessanealmd PNYTKV ...
If you see such infant reflux symptoms, you might notice that the vomiting gets worse after each feeding. As a result the babies may seem hungry all the time, they can become dehydrated and they can lose weight. Usually the problem is treated through a minor surgery.. Some other symptoms of infant spit up. You ought to contact your doctor if the spit ups are accompanied by fever, problems with breathing, diarrhea and fussiness. Another scary symptom is the spit up containing blood or mucus.. Even though the infant reflux symptoms may seem scary at first, you have to remember that the doctors can help the little one with the problem.. ...
How old is your baby? My firstborn used to spit up a lot - he would projectile his formula half way across the room! I recommend you mention this to your pediatrician. They will say that a teaspoon of spit up looks like a lot more than it really is, but if you tell them that it's definitely more than a teaspoon - they might be inclined to do some testing. Does your baby spit up like this often? every bottle or just now and then? If it is often and it's a LOT, then it "could" be acid reflux which was the case with my baby. The doctor put him on zantac and the problem disappeared. - We had to suffer through a 24 hour study though before we g...
Generally, its best to avoid certain foods, such as those which are deep-fried or contain large amounts of fats, including full-fat dairy products. Caffeinated beverages, including coffee, tea, and soft drinks, should be avoided, as should highly spiced foods, chocolate, certain citrus fruits, tomato products, raw onion and garlic. If you havent already, now is certainly the time to stop smoking and drinking alcohol, which can both exacerbate acid reflux.. Eating smaller, more frequent meals may also reduce the occurrence of acid reflux. The stomach will be able to more efficiently digest food and empty more rapidly, avoiding a buildup of stomach acid and helping reduce intra-abdominal pressure that can lead to the lower esophageal valve malfunctioning.. Ginger has been used historically to treat acid reflux and other problems of indigestion, promoting the production of saliva and alleviating nausea and gas. Chewing gum may also help reduce symptoms by increasing salivary production. ...

Please note that the signs of this condition can vary widely and symptoms are not necessarily distinguishable from other kinds of distress. A dog might have difficulty settling, stand uncomfortably and seem to be in extreme discomfort for no apparent reason. Other possible symptoms may include firm distension of the abdomen , weakness, hypersalivation, rapid heart rate, and retching without vomiting. It is advisable to always have an emergency contact number available for your veterinarian at all times and to contact them promptly at any signs of distress or abdominal discomfort. It is always advisable never to allow your dog to engage in vigorous activity soon after eating or drinking large quantities. ) ...
Avermectins are a class of natural products with broad antiparasitic activity. Ivermectin, a prominent member of the avermectin family, is a drug that is used extensively in veterinary medicine to treat infections caused by nematode and arthropod parasites. Although ivermectin is generally safe for use in domestic animals, in the 1980s a number of clinical cases with neurological manifestation have been reported after ivermectin treatment. Neurotoxic symptoms include mydriasis, tremors, ataxia and anorexia. These symptoms occur at doses that are 1/200th of the dose required to cause toxicity in other dogs. Neurological manifestations of ivermectin in susceptible dogs also include hypersalivation, blindness, coma respiratory compromise and death. ...

Weve had a rough few days here mostly due to some feeding problems with Chase. When we went to MUSC last Tuesday, they told us he did great with his swallow study and could now handle thin liquids (i.e. breastmilk). We were ecstatic! The recommendation was to breastfeed every other feeding and give him a bottle in between with thickened milk, but slowly decrease the amount of thickener we use in the bottles until it is just breastmilk. We tried that for the first day or so, but it seemed the poor guy would spit up a lot of the bottle, while he appeared to keep the milk down when he nursed. Weird, right? So hubs and I made the decision to just jump ahead to exclusive breastfeeding and eliminating the bottles. That was working REALLY well for about a day. Then we noticed about three hours after hed nursed, he would spit up a decent amount of milk. Only its not really your normal "milk spit-up" so much as a mostly clear spit (TMI?). Weve seen it come from his mouth and his nose, and usually it ...

In recent years, the study of non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinsons disease (PD) has become a major focus of medical care1-5. Classically, the diagnosis and treatment of motor symptoms have always been considered of most importance despite the presence of NMS are recognized since its description by James Parkinson in 18176. Recently, with the concept of pathological staging of PD by Braak et al., it was more clearly established the correlation of various non-motor symptoms7,8. The prevalence of NMS is high among patients with PD. The PRIAMO study evaluated 1,072 patients in 55 hospitals9,10. Of PD patients, 98.6% reported NMS, and the most common symptoms were fatigue (58%), anxiety (56%), leg pain (38%), insomnia (37%), urinary urgency and nocturia (35%), excessive salivation, difficulty in maintaining concentration (31%) and depression (22.5%). The average number of NMS was 7.8 per patient (0-32). The psychiatric field was the most commonly affected (67%). The authors reported that the ...
The feared Black Mamba is found throughout many parts of the African continent. They are known to be highly aggressive, and strike with deadly precision. They are also the fastest land snake in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to 20km/h. These fearsome snakes can strike up to 12 times in a row. A single bite is capable of killing anywhere from 10-25 adults. The venom is a fast acting neurotoxin. Its bite delivers about 100-120 mg of venom, on average; however, it can deliver up to 400 mg. If the venom reaches a vein, 0.25 mg/kg is sufficient to kill a human in 50% of cases. The initial symptom of the bite is local pain in the bite area, although not as severe as snakes with hemotoxins. The victim then experiences a tingling sensation in the mouth and extremities, double vision, tunnel vision, severe confusion, fever, excessive salivation (including foaming of the mouth and nose) and pronounced ataxia (lack of muscle control). If the victim does not receive medical attention, symptoms ...

One of the most painful and frustrating conditions cats can develop is feline stomatitis. The cause is unknown, but appears to be a severe reaction to plaque and the tooth structure itself, or the basement membrane of the periodontal tissues. Clinical signs include severe chronic gingivitis, with or without the following: faucitis, pharyngitis, or palatitis (inflammation of the throat or roof of the mouth). Other signs include excessive salivation, reluctance to eat, bleeding gum tissue, extreme oral sensitivity, and weight loss or anorexia. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and biopsy of the affected gingival tissue. The histopathology usually finds abundant lymphocytes, plasmacytes and occasional neutrophils. Although many organisms have been cultured or found in affected cats mouths, none has been proven to be the cause. As such, oral culture and sensitivity or viral isolation has been of little benefit. One recent interesting relationship is that of Bartonella sp. with chronic feline ...

Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven hoofed animals, such as cattle, hogs, sheep, goats and deer. The disease is not a threat to human health.. FMD is caused by a virus that can be spread by air, direct contact with infected animals or animal products, and indirect contact with clothing, equipment, feed or manure contaminated with the virus. The virus can survive in the environment. Cool temperatures and a moist and organic environment allow the virus to survive longer while a dry environment and sunlight inactivate the virus.. The primary signs of FMD infection are depression, excessive salivation and lameness, vesicles (blisters) and erosions in the mouth, nares, muzzle, feet or teats. Although few infected animals die and many recover, the disease often leaves animals debilitated with weight loss, permanent hoof damage or poor growth.. There are many strains of FMD. There is no universal vaccine against FMD as vaccine must closely match the ...

Some babies do spit up more than others. My first never spit up at all and my second would often bring up some of her formula. This is very normal for a baby of 4 weeks as the opening to the stomach that keeps things down is not fully developed yet. Also, many babies who are formula fed over eat and this is how they get rid of the excess. I would not worry too much about it at this point. Especially if it is just a little bit. At that age it is probably best to go by weight and developmental milestones. If your baby is gaining weight, not lethargic or fusssy and seems to be becoming more alert, I Dont think you have anything to worry about. I will say that your baby may not gain weight was rapidly as other babies on formula because there is no nasty fillers in this whole foods formula. A friend of mine who switched their baby over around 6 months actually saw weight loss. He was a very squeezable baby probably due to the fillers in the store bought formula he was previously on. :). If you feel ...
Fallin apart at the seams. We knew that we were in for a crazy ride but can it be that the crazy ride has gone into overdrive? Marco has been spitting up more and more masses of bloof from his lungs. They have been getting bigger and bigger. Last night he struggled to spit up 2 enormous blood clots the size of a paper dollar. He has been using up an enormous amounts of energy to spit up the clots and has had an alarming rise in his blood pressure and pulse. His body has been going through fever and sweats all day and night for the past 2 days. Larry the nurse says that his body is trying to compensate for the extreme shortness of breath. His distress has also increased because last night, the medicines had not been aleviating his pain or anxiety. Today the meds were all increased to help make him more comfortable and relieve some anxiety. We are on alert to watch out for additional issues like passing out, falling, and the dreaded blood clot getting stuck. He is in crisis mode. Every breath ...

I just got back from a trip to the ER. In my defense, it is our first trip to the ER, although not the first time Ive freaked out about the health of my little one. My daughter is a "happy spitter." She literally goes through about 8 bibs a day and spits up with a smile on all of our clothing. My weekday morning routine involves leaving my clothes by the door and walking around in a t-shirt until shes in her carseat in order to avoid multiple wardrobe changes before getting out of the door. So, this weekend, as my baby spit away I didnt think much of it. However, she was having an unusually cranky day and flipping out every time I tried to breastfeed her. Then around 3pm, while my husband was walking around with her, he called me over suddenly to see her bright yellow copious vomit ...
I think one of the biggest concerns (aside from safety) about co sleeping is that, "your kids will never leave your bed." We arent at the stage yet where we want or need Grey out of our bed so I cant answer that based on experience…but what I will say is that they are only little for such a short period of time. We obviously wont have a 15 year old in bed with us but if he wants to sleep with us for a while right now…so be it! I dont like sleeping alone so why should I expect my baby to?. Something else to note…co sleeping is very messy in the beginning. All night nursers tend to pee all night long as well…which led to me changing a diaper or changing the sheets constantly. Newborns and infants also tend to spit up a lot…so take it from me and buy extra bed sheets or be prepared to wash yours a lot. ...
Hello... I need some advice on what to do. My baby is 10.5 weeks. Apparently she has silent reflux. I had no idea because she does not fuss or cry any more than a normal baby would. I have seen her spit up and she does so without discomfort. She almost seems relieved by it. I have also heard her silently refluxing and again it doesnt seem to bother her. I believe she had painful reflux earlier on, and a flare up last week when I consumed some dairy. Heres the thing - at weighted feeds with
My DD is on Prilosec, just started on last Friday and so far we are noticing no improvement at all. She was switched from Zantac because she was not eating well. Also, I have doubts that my dd has reflux. this is what she does when she is eating: If she is groggy or asleep she will usually eat the whole bottle without any problems. If she is awake she will take about an ounce or two and then she will start wiggling around and sometimes it sounds like she is closing off the back of her throat, then it sounds like she is clearing her throat and then she might make these gulping sounds. She turns her head from side to side and tries to hit the bottle out with her hands. Eventually she will kick the bottle out by sticking out her tongue and usually she will not let me put it back in. Sometimes after an hour or so she will take some more. she rarely spits up and the only time I hear stuff come up is when she burps and then she swallows it back down but it does not happen that frequently. She does not ...
